He's Okay:
Couture Checks in With FCF

By Loretta Hunt

From Las Vegas this afternoon, recently unseated light-heavyweight champion Randy Couture called into FCF to let everyone know that he's okay. In a slightly somber tone, Couture says his injury last night at UFC 46 was caused by a seam on the outside of the commission issued gloves that grazed his left eye. (Couture says he didn't feel any impact from the actual punch). The damage required three stitches to his lower eyelid and five to his upper lid. Couture says there was also some retinal abrasion, as well as some irregularity with his pupil dilation that he was given eye drops for. Patched up and back in his Mandalay Bay hotel room, Couture says he has been resting with his wife and family members.

On the positive side, Couture was told all his optical maladies are expected to heal completely and with his stitches out in a few days, "the Natural" hopes to be back to training in less than two weeks. According to Couture, Zuffa has already started discussing the inevitable rematch with newly crowned champion Vitor Belfort and he let the promotion know that he'll be ready to fight again as early as April (although he realistically anticipates a June date at the earliest.)

FCF wishes Couture, as well as the other injured UFC 46 participants, the speediest of recoveries.

Erosa trying to slam
out of Limiac's arm bar
On a night when Randy Couture was defeated in one of the most bizarre finishes in UFC history, team-mate Chris Leben looked to tack another victory onto his unblemished record, in, ironically, a rematch with Boyd Ballard. Three and half months ago, Leben needed all of two minutes and eighteen seconds to submit Ballard with an arm bar. On this evening, Leben trimmed off 28 seconds of ring time by KO'ing Ballard only one minute fifty seconds into round 1! As expected, Ballard opened by using his strong wrestling background to clinch and drive Leben into the corner. The Team Quest standout worked well in the tight proximity and was finally able to break free from his precarious position. This would mark the beginning of the end, as Leben unleashed a barrage of punches, staggering Ballard, and eventually knocked him face down onto the mat. An elated Leben said post fight, "My game plan was to slug it out, I wanted to give the crowd a show, I wanted to stand up the whole time, I'm happy with the win". When asked about his future plans, Leben emphatically stated "I'm gonna keep takin' everybody out until they put me in the UFC, I'm gonna get there one way or another"!

In the co-main event Joel Townsend showed heart, tenacity and solid ground game as he took out Jason Vellows to win the 135 lbs Washington State title. From the outset the game plans were crystal clear. Townsend wanted the fight on the ground anyway possible, and Vellows wanted to keep it standing. Townsend was able to impose his will as he took Vellows down and clamped on a tight triangle choke. Vellows desperately tried to slam his way out of the triangle to no avail, but was saved by the bell in round 1. After a nearly identical round two, Townsend looked extremely fatigued and seemed as if he would have nothing left for the third stanza. After attempting a feeble double leg to open round three, Townsend somehow called on all his will and heart and was able to take the fight to the canvas. In a last ditch effort, before exhaustion could get the better him, the crafty jiu-jitsu practitioner was able to lock in a tight arm bar, leaving Vellows no choice but to tap.

In other action, the feisty Cassy Trost was able to eek out a close decision over Debbie Gregg after 3 rounds of kickboxing. In a back and forth battle, both combatants were able to land solid punches and kicks, but in the end is was Cassy's overall aggressiveness and stiff right hands that swayed the judges. Joe Derobbio also put on a impressive performance as he was able to TKO Joel Pettit early in round 2. Derobbio came out ferociously as he landed accurate punches and showed a tremendous sprawl fending off each and every one of Pettit's takedown attempts. Derobbio's efforts were enough to land him the prestigious fighter of the night award.

'We have a change to announce.' starts matchmaker Miguel Iturrate. 'One of the main events has been changed to Andre Semenov against Trevor Prangley. This match will take place in the 185 lbs. division.' Prangley, an impressive athlete from Idaho and Bob Cook's Team AKA, has been looking for a step up fight at 185 lbs according to his management. Prangley has been competing at 205 lbs, and last appeared at the IFC 'World Domination' event last September, but feels more than comfortable making the weight. In Semenov, he gets the world class opponent he has wanted. 'Semenov is a veteran of 30 fights. Add his physical talent to that experience, and he is formidable.'

'Another change sees Arman Gambaryan taking on 'Boca' Deoliveira, Semenov's original opponent. The weight class for this bout will be 205 lbs.' concludes the matchmaker.

UFC Fighters hit Paradise!
Jens Pulver makes his Hawaii Fighting Debut and Dave Menne returns to Super Brawl
By Mike Onzuka

Jens Pulver
Jens Pulver
It seems as if the UFC boat has landed in Hawaii. We have more UFC studs than we know what to do with. Former UFC Champions Jens Pulver, who makes his Hawaii debut, and Dave Menne, who returns back to Hawaii after a debut in Super Brawl 13 in September of 1999, will help headline Super Brawl 33. In tow with Pulver and Menne are Matt Hughes and Tim Sylvia. Menne is matched up with the talented Falaniko Vitale. Newly crowned UFC welterweight champ and local boy, BJ Penn is planning on attending Super Brawl 33 and possibly Charuto Verissimo may even show up. Oh yeah, Enson Inoue is also here for the fight. This would make eight UFC veterans at one event that is NOT a UFC. That might be some kind of unofficial record. I could be wrong of course...

Niko Vitale has an opportunity to jump right back in the UFC title race for the 185 lb belt if he can beat a workhorse in Dave Menne. Vitale has been training with local journeyman, Ron "the Machine Gun" Jhun, who is also on this card and both are in incredible shape. Jhun has been eyeing the UFC and waiting for his chance to show the world that he is another Hawaii fighter that has the skills and toughness to be a force in the ever fluctuating 170 lb division. "Little Evil" is looking to stay busy and keeping himself sharp by fighting Grappling Unlimited's Eddie Yagin in a kickboxing match. Unfortunately for both the fighters and the fans, Jens is sporting a mean gash over his right eye which could pose a problem for this fight, but more importantly jeopardize his upcoming Shooto debut against Uematsu on March 22nd which happens to be my birthday (someone buy me a Porsche 911 Turbo please). Both fighters may wear headgear to provide some kind of protection for the cut and allow the fighters to throw the heavy leather that they are known for because they are itching to get it on.

Dave Menne and Matt Hughes
Menne with Matt Hughes

Super Brawl 33 also is starting the first step to find the best "unknown" fighter at 155 lbs in another collaboration with Monte Cox's Extreme Challenge. Four of Hawaii's up and coming fighters will compete in an old school four-man tournament with the top two finishers advancing to the finals tentatively scheduled for early Summer. Extreme Challenge will hold two preliminary four-man tournaments for four other fighters and two slots will be held for at-large fighters. This joint venture has been very successful in showcasing Josh Barnett, Rico Rodriguez, Heath Herring, Bobby Hoffman, Joe Doerkson, and Dennis Kang among other fighters. The favorites may be 808 Fight Factory's Harris Sarmiento who seems to have been fighting almost every week and Grappling Unlimited's Kolo Koka who is coming down from 170 lbs by the request of UFC's Dana White. HMC's Mike Bauer had a great showing in his debut fight at 170 lbs against GU's Keene and Paul Laga from the Bulls Pen is a hard hitting wrestling that should make this tournament interesting.

Tim Sylvia and Justin Eilers
Eilers (right) with Tim Sylvia
Team Extreme's Justin Eilers, who gave Cabbage Correira the fight of his life in a past Super Brawl, returns to action beside his fellow Iowans. Eilers faces a veteran from Arizona in Vince Lucero and may be ready to start taking some high profile matches in the Heavyweight division. Finally, one of the sleepers on the card should be between two scrappy fighters named Harvey Nakamoto (Grappling Unlimited) and Ed Newalu (808 Fight Factory). Nakamoto is coming off of a win of Bozo Palling's son Stephen and Newalu looked very sharp in his last fight in the Ring of Honor. The fighters looked ready to go and filed in and out of the Round Table Pizza where the weigh-ins were held with pizza in hand. Now that's my kind of fight diet. I just need some ice cream and chocolate chip cookies to go with that and I'm all set for Super Brawl 33.

Super Brawl 33
Report & Photography by Chris Onzuka

Super Brawl 33 put together the best card (at least in my opinion) in a while. In addition to the great card, former and current UFC champs were out in numbers. I will just list them off to save time; Tim Sylvia, Dave Menne, Matt Hughes, BJ Penn and Jens Pulver. SB 33 would feature a four man tournament of the best 155lbers in Hawaii to see who is Hawaii's top dog in that weight class... A fighter representing each of the four largest MMA schools in Hawaii took part in the tournament. It was the 808 Fight Factory's night because four fighters competed and all four won their matches. The king of the 155lbs hill would be 808 Fight Factory's Harris Sarmiento. His superior striking and take down skills lead him to victory against two tough opponents. Another impressive performance was Sarmiento's teammate, Ed Newalu dominating a very tough Harvey Nakamoto. Bryson Monterde also stood out and was on another level than his opponent. 808's top fighter, Ron Jhun, pounded on a very tricky Kyle Brees.

Ron Jhun pounding on Kyle Brees
Jhun pounding on Brees

Jens Pulver stepped into the ring with one of Hawaii's best 145lbers in Eddie Yagin. Unfortunately, this match was an exhibition kickboxing match and was "cut" short (pun intended) due to a pre-existing laceration over Pulver's eye that was reopened with the help of Yagin. A night of great fights was capped off by one of the best main events in Super Brawl history. Niko Vitale wanted to prove that he was having an off night during his rematch with Matt Lindland in his last UFC appearance. Vitale took it to one of the best 185lbs fighters in the world, former UFC Middleweight champion, Dave Menne. Much like Charuto Verissimo bloodied Gil Castillo, Vitale did the same to Menne, which is no easy task. Vitale out-punched Menne for three rounds, getting off quicker punches and even staggering Menne with some punches.

The Brazilian Beat
Belfort's drama continues, Chute Boxe flying to Japan, Minotauro not pursuing Olympics and HEAT FC 3 coming in April!

The Brazilian Beat:
February is passing rather slowly; fortunately we have been treated to plenty of MMA action in the mean time. We're still in the first half of the month and as we ended January with a great UFC show, we have already been graced with a PRIDE show to start the month and two weeks later, PRIDE BUSHIDO is coming our way, not to mention the other shows that have recently taken place such as KOTC and Super Brawl, all showing very interesting cards. PRIDE BUSHIDO for instance will be very important for the Brazilian scene as no less than six fighters from this country will take part in it with Wanderlei Silva leading the way for the new talents of Chute Boxe to display their skills. In the meantime, Silva's potential rival, Vitor Belfort can't even celebrate a win that finally got him his long awaited UFC belt, with his ongoing trauma continuing to haunt his dreams. His sister is still missing, and we at FCF plead to anyone in Brazil with information on Priscila Belfort to please contact the local police to help the family to finally get some relief. With BUSHIDO coming up there are still some other things happening on the scene and Full Contact Fighter brings you the latest news with a unique beat Brazilian style yet again!
  • Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira is currently in Cuba training boxing with the Brazilian Olympic Boxing team. Nogueira did some training with them to improve his boxing skills in Brazil, and got an invitation to train some more with them while they are preparing in Cuba since Brazil lacks in super heavyweights. Rumors were flying that Minotauro was also aiming for a shot at the Olympic games in boxing, but this is not the case. According to his manager, Mario Sperry, Minotauro is there just to improve his skills and will be flying to Japan in the coming days to meet Sperry and help him out with his PRIDE BUSHIDO fight. Minotauro will be fighting in the PRIDE Heavyweight GP and will not try to take part into any Olympic games trials.

  • UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort returned to Brazil after his doctor stoppage win over Randy Couture at the last UFC, and barely had the time or the mindset to celebrate. Soon after he arrived in Brazil, Belfort got back to his campaign to find his missing sister. Priscila Belfort has been missing for several weeks now, and no information has turned up yet. "The Phenom" has appeared on some of Brazil's biggest TV shows in recent days, always talking about his sister and appearing quite sad, not in a celebratory mood at all. During his speeches on TV shows, Vitor also stated he would like to face PRIDE champion Wanderlei Silva to unify the belts of the two biggest shows in the MMA world.

  • Wanderlei Silva left for Japan on February 9th for his fight against Ikuhisa Minowa at PRIDE BUSHIDO. Silva trained very hard for this fight and is seeing this as a great opportunity not only for him, but also for the Chute Boxe team as a whole, as his teammates Mauricio Shogun Rua and Jadyson Costa are fighting on the card as well. Silva spoke with FCF about his upcoming fight and future challenges, as you'll be able to see here in this column in the coming days. Both young fighters, Shogun and Jadyson, also left for Japan the same day as Wanderlei, along with trainers Rudimar Fedrigo and Rafael Cordeiro. Jorge "Macaco "Patino is joining them as well on their voyage to the land of the Rising Sun to be in the fighters' corners in his first appearance as a member of the Chute Boxe team. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua told FCF he is weighing 97 kg now and is already working to lose the 4 extra kilos for his fight against Akihiro Gono at Bushido. Word is that Shogun may appear as a heavyweight very soon.

  • The MMA market continues to grow in Brazil and as a result new events are constantly popping up all over the place. The Northeastern MMA market, which once was non-existent in the country, is now flourishing due to the success of shows such as HEAT, and a new show will take place in the city of Fortaleza, in the state of Ceara, which is also in the Northeast of Brazil. The show is called the 1st Open Ceara Vale Tudo Challenge, and is scheduled for March 11th and will feature some HEAT FC veterans that are Brazilian Northeast breed, such as Paulo Guerreiro, Carlos Indio, Josenildo Rodrigues and Savio Maia -- all of whom fought in HEAT FC 1.

  • Speaking of HEAT FC, the second edition of the fastest growing show in the Southern hemisphere debuted on Brazilian Pay-Per-View on February 7th, through NET/SKY on the Premiere Combat channel. This was the first time a HEAT show was televised anywhere in the world. In the meantime, final details regarding the DVD production for America are taking place, and the promoters are starting to work on HEAT FC 3, scheduled for either April 15th or April 16th. Despite what was originally planned, the show will once again take place in the city of Natal, and some fights will be announced mid-February.

  • As usual, UFC veteran Pedro Rizzo just traveled to Holland to train with his friend and K-1 legend Peter Aerts, in en effort to sharpen his Muay Thai skills even more. Rizzo left Brazil this past Tuesday and will be returning on February 26th. "The Rock" has yet to sign a contract with another organization, since his UFC contract ended, but is preparing with a fight around April in mind, since he has already received some proposals from Japanese organizations and is eager to get back to the ring.

  • For more great behind the scenes info from the birthplace of Vale-Tudo, check out the Brazilian Beat in the upcoming issue of Full Contact Fighter

'We have teams from Japan, Finland, Sweden and France coming to compete at the AFC #7, as Florida's American TOP TEAM and Freestyle Fighting Academy both continue to step up

Of particular interest are the three 'American Top Team versus JAPAN' bouts that headline the card. 'Izuru Takeuchi was ranked #1 by SHOOTO and is currently ranked #2 in PANCRASE. He faces Marcel Ferreira, a black belt who is definitely ready to step up to the challenge.' states the matchmaker.

Another day in the office for the Axe Murderer:
PRIDE BUSHIDO takes Silva back to the ring for the first time in 2004!

This next Weekend in Japan, PRIDE BUSHIDO 2 will see Wanderlei Silva stepping in a ring to fight for the first time since he won the PRIDE Middleweight GP, defeating Quinton Jackson in an epic battle for the title. After this win, Silva's popularity skyrocketed in Brazil with numerous TV appearances, and even meetings with members of the government of cities and the likes. Showing that despite all the recent attention he is truly a fighter at his heart, "The Axe Murderer" hasn't changed a bit and continues to be hungry for action and willing to help his younger teammates to reach glory in the land of the rising sun, that brought fame to the most famous Silva in the MMA world. In a brief conversation with FCF few days before his departure to Japan, Wanderlei had some comments on his view of PRIDE's new venture, his next challenges and a bit more, Enjoy!

FCF:   You'll be fighting again for the first time after you won the PRIDE Middleweight GP, and your teammates Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Jadyson Costa will be fighting on the same card. Being the PRIDE Middleweight Champion and Middlweight GP Champion, what's your main motivation in going to PRIDE BUSHIDO to face Ikuhisa Minowa?
WS:     The main importance of this fight is to take my teammates to the big show and give them the chance to make their money and show they'll work in Japan. We're willing to win the three fights in BUSHIDO, as we all prepared very well. Shogun, Jadyson and myself are all ready, just waiting for the day of the fights. We're going there and we're going to show that the fighters from our academy always do a good showing! Inclusively, those who want to join Chute Boxe are all welcome. The academy has it doors open, so those who have this dream and have conditions to come to Curitiba even if it's for a small period of time, or a long period of time for that matter, and if someone think he is able to come and do it, our academy is open to new talents. Master [Rudimar Fedrigo] is a very easy to talk to person, so those who want to come to train will be more than welcome.

FCF:   I remember when you beat Sakuraba for the second time and won the Pride Middleweight belt, you told me your master told you that you would stay undefeated as a champion for at least 10 years! It has been 2 years already, so there's only 8 to go Wanderlei?
WS:     If God helps me! I always prepare myself to the limit, despite the injuries that happen all the time, cause it's a very demanding sport. I'm always getting injured, but despite that I always fight well prepared, I really train hard and as long as God continues to give me strength and make my body withstand all the effort, I'll keep fighting and I'm only going to stop when I really can't do it anymore.

FCF:   Vitor Belfort just became the UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion in an awkward fight against Randy Couture, so there are some talks about a rematch between you and Vitor. Do you think this is going to happen? And what are Wanderlei Silva's plans for 2004?
WS:     I intend to keep fighting in PRIDE this year, and if PRIDE goes to the USA I hope to be able to go and fight, and if I'll have to go and fight against the UFC Champion, it'll be even better! No matter who's the champion. I'll fight Belfort, I'll fight Couture or anyone else that may appear in the meantime. I don't pick opponents, and I'll be well prepared to do a good showing against any opponent that may appear.

Belfort News:
A glimmer of hope for the family

By Eduardo Alonso

It has been more than a month since Priscila Vieira Belfort, UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort's sister, disappeared in the city of Rio de Janeiro when she was leaving work and no news about her were heard ever since. Vitor went on to win the UFC belt while living the drama of trying to find his sister, and after he came back to Brazil he couldn't even celebrate as the family continued to suffer and struggle doing endless claims of help in national TV trough the country, in the effort to finally find any information about Priscila and finally get their lives back to normal. Now, finally at least a possible clue of where his sister is right now, and if she's alive or not, came to the scene as hope is again a reality for the Belfort family.
This past Friday a filming crew was able to film some youngsters who were riding on top of a train in the state of Sao Paulo, in what's called "Train Surfing" in Brazil, a very dangerous and illegal practice. Among the three people involved in the act, there was a girl who looked very similar to Priscila Belfort, in what surprised the filming crew that decided to bring the tape to the Brazilian police to check it. The tape became public today, as it was also broadcast in a TV show in Brazil, with Vitor Belfort and his father, as well as his wife Joana Prado, being able to watch it closely. The girl who can be Priscila looked like she was on drugs, and also looked a bit fatter than "The Phenom's" sister, however her face looked like Priscila's face and that caused surprise in Vitor himself. Police is already studying the tape as well as searching for clues and witnesses to try to find out if the girl is really Priscila herself or just a look a like. The scientific police is going to try to study the sound of the tape, as the girl that can be Priscila Belfort talks briefly during it, to try to identify her voice. Even with this being far from something certain, due to the fact that this kids were filmed very far from Rio de Janeiro and the behavior was totally unlikely for Vitor's older sister, as well as the fact she was chubbier, this is the only solid clue that was found out since the police started to search for her, and needless to say brought some hope that she may indeed be alive and can finally mean some light for this never ending drama. FCF will keep you posted on the developments and will keep hoping that all will end well for the family. Once again, if you live in Brazil and have any information on Priscila Belfort, please don't hesitate and call the police to provide your information.

Belfort's Sister's Case:
Back to square one as hopes fade away once again

By Eduardo Alonso

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort's family drama continues, as another sad piece of news took away the newest sight of hope of finding Priscila Belfort alive and in good condition. As it was reported by the mainstream Brazilian media, as well as FCF, this past weekend footage of a "Train surfer" girl who looked to be on drugs brought hope that the girl could be Belfort's sister herself, as they looked very much alike. Unfortunately, police have now determined that the girl is not Vitor Belfort's sister. With the big effort by the Brazilian Media, the police was able to locate the "Train surfer" girl and find out she was not Priscila, bringing investigations back to the beginning once again, as no real clues of where Priscila Vieira Belfort is right now, or whether or not she's still alive. The whole situation brought even more pain to the family, as "The Phenom" stated to the Brazilian press that his grandmother is now not feeling well, since she was so willing to believe that the girl doing the "Train surfing" was Priscila. Vitor's mother has also being ill with the situation, and FCF still hopes for a good outcome with Priscila being found alive and well as soon as possible.

Aftermath of After Shock
King Of the Cage: After Shock
Held February 20, 2004
At Soboba Casino - San Jacinto, California
Report and photos by Keith Mills

Ring girl
A cold night in Cali
It was a wild night for King Of The Cage's first pay-per-view show of 2004. First off, the eighteen fights -- yes eighteen -- complicated the pay-per-view broadcast to the point that the undercard actually happened after the main events. The headline fight was Joe Stevenson successfully defending his belt against Joe Camacho, which, combined with the other belt bout, Charlie Valencia vs. Bobby Gamboa, proved KOTC is willing to have a pay-per-view show that highlights the lighter weight classes. Dan Severn and Scary Jerry ending in a lackluster draw was the only fight above 170 on the upper end of the card. Even with all of that going on, and the return of Romi Aram, the show was hands down stolen by Charles "Crazy Horse" Bennett who seemed to have the entire venue buzzing after his WWE-type antics. Bennett started out the fight by jumping onto and then sitting on the fence in his corner as if he was going to leap at his opponent from the top of the cage. After finishing his opponent in the quickest fight of the night, Bennett then jumped onto the top of the cage again, this time doing a back flip off of it into the center of the ring. Stevenson, Denny, Aram, and even Valencia couldn't top that. Look for a complete report in an upcoming issue of Full Contact Fighter.

Back In Business:
Reduced Suspension Speeds Baroni's Return To Octagon
By Loretta Hunt

UFC middleweight brawler Phil Baroni has gotten a reprieve of sorts, following the yearlong administrative suspension that was imposed on him after his performance at November 21st's UFC 45. In a tense bout with Team Quest's Evan Tanner, an enraged Baroni grabbed and swung two times at referee Larry Landless following a questionable stoppage late in round one after Tanner had fully mounted his opponent on the ground.

UFC 45: Baroni vs. Tanner

Mohegan Tribe representatives, who had been ringside to observe the infraction, conferred backstage in the moments following the attack of the official and handed down the penalty shortly after without a formal hearing. As is often standard with rulings of this kind, the Mohegan Tribe's decision to suspend Baroni was reciprocated by various sports athletic commissions and regulatory bodies, including the influential Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversees at least three UFC events a year.

Would anyone care for a Baroni-Tanner rematch? "The New York Bad Ass" Phil sure would. On the heels of Tuesday's notification from the Department of Athletic Regulation for the Mohegan Tribe that his one year suspension had been reduced to three months, the UFC middleweight contender wasted no time yesterday in naming who he'd like to square off against next in his return to the Octagon anticipated for June or July.

"I believe everyone wants to see the Evan Tanner fight, except for Evan Tanner," an enthused Baroni relayed from his home in Las Vegas. "I don't think he wants to fight me in any way shape or form."

It was a controversial bout back at November's UFC 45 that saw Baroni score early on against his opponent with his punching power, until Tanner turned the tables late in the round and achieved full mount on route to a questionable stoppage at the hands of referee Larry Landless. "I think he knows that he was very, very lucky last time," comments Baroni on their first meeting. "I think he knows he was saved by Larry [Landless] and he think he wants to get out of there the way he did with a cheesy win and never see me inside the cage again. He said numerous times that he's never been hit so hard and that's funny, because I never really hit him that hard. I hit him with glancing shots. When I hit him hard, he's gonna be asleep. He'll be on his back and I'll be on top of him pounding away till the referee pulls me off."

Although Baroni says he's game to lock horns with Tanner again, he's also skeptical that his Team Quest adversary will take the challenge. "He had a big mouth after the fight which is very uncharacteristic of Evan Tanner. I said nothing to the guy. I didn't take anything away from his so-called win, and he came on the Internet with his big mouth and started making comments and the reason he did that was because he's afraid. Probably for the first time in his life, he was afraid to fight someone and that someone is me. I guarantee he won't fight me. He'll say he wants to fight me, but he'll price himself out of the fight. It's gonna be an amount that he knows the UFC won't pay him. He's going to fucking do that. I guarantee it. I'm telling you guys first now before it happens. That's going to be his way of getting out of fighting me again."

Calls to the UFC last night confirmed the rematch is indeed under consideration. UFC president Dana White voiced that the organization is looking to make the bout happen as early as UFC 48, although no formal offers have been made to Tanner at this time.

Tanner Responds:
He'll Take That Rematch
By Loretta Hunt

Team Quest fighter Evan Tanner has gotten wind of Phil Baroni's reduced suspension revelation, as well his request for a rematch, and he's not too enthused. "A reduced suspension?" Tanner scoffed from his home in Oregon earlier today. "He's not getting punished at all. Shoot, I'll sometimes have to sit out nine months between fights. What's three months? That's nothing. That's just a formality. He got his fine, which may have hurt him a little bit, but as far as having to sit out, that was just a gesture. That was nothing."

"New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni has jumped back into the spotlight in record time following yesterday's announcement that he'll be eligible for MMA competition after March 3rd. Having already issued an open challenge to Tanner for a rematch of their first UFC 45 scuffle back in November, the Texan showed little hesitancy in his reply today. "I'll definitely take the fight," the quiet middleweight conveyed. "We'll settle this once and for all. Personally, Baroni and I don't like each other. I don't think that's a surprise to anyone. I'd be glad to take that fight."

Gladiator Challenge
Soars at Eagle Mountain

Dan Camarillo slamming Robert Breslin
Held February 24, 2004
At Eagle Mountain Casino - Porterville, CA
Report and photos by Keith Mills

Warren Rubio (left) vs. Stan Dressler
Rubio (left) vs. Dressler
Although billed as a smaller Gladiator Challenge the show on February 24th had some memorable moments. These smaller shows feed into the larger Gladiator Challenges which in turn feed into King Of the Cage, Gladiator Challenge's sister promotion. One of the surprising aspects about this card was the presence of two 808 Fight Factory fighters for what amounted to a local show considering 808 Fight Factory are based in Hawaii. The other was the crowd's reaction, especially to the 'grudge matches' where tribal and local grievances were settled in the cage. There were no belts on the line.

Both Gladiator Challenge and King Of the Cage are known for their preference of standup action and relatively high percentage of knockouts. That is why it was so surprising to see the four main events end in two armbars, a front choke, and a decision. The biggest surprise of the night literally was from the tribal grudge match between Stan Dressler vs. Warren Rubio fight. Dressler weighed in at a whopping 320 lbs. and looked to stand about 7' tall while Rubio weighed in at 195 lbs. and seemed about 5'9". Some of he fans couldn't believe it when Rubio actually seemed to be getting the better of the giant standing but Dressler ended the fight with a rear naked choke instead of ground and pound.
