Bushido Europe "Rotterdam Rumble" Not PRIDE Event, But Fedor Free to Fight By Loretta Hunt
Emelianenko, who recently added the 2005 PRIDE Heavyweight Grand Prix title to his list of hefty accomplishments by defeating killer kickboxer Mirko "Cro Cop" Filopovic one month ago, will be facing Bob Schrijber in the Holland show that has adopted a similar name to PRIDE's successful spin-off event. Although Kanda voiced PRIDE's concern in having their champion run the risk of injury outside their own promotion's plans, she said it was fully in his contractual rights to do so at this time. Explains Kanda, one of the "exceptions" PRIDE allows its fighters under contract is the option to fight in their own promotions. "Fedor is fighting, but the promoter of that show is the manager of Fedor," Kanda explained. "It has nothing to do with us as a promoter. We are not involved [in] any way financially." As for PRIDE logos appearing on initial posters for the event (which the Japanese promotion did not give permission for), Kanda says they contacted Bushido Europe to have them removed, although some advertisements could not be pulled from publications in time. However, various websites are still displaying the PRIDE logo on distributed posters. Regardless, Kanda says the relationship between the two promotions has been amicable. "We talked to that promoter because they requested PRIDE fighters, just like other events around the world that always want to associate with PRIDE," Kanda says. "So we sent Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman. They're gonna use our fighters. They offered our fighters [fights], so we are cooperating." |
The Brazilian Beat: After some weeks traveling through the most diverse landscapes and countries in Europe, this reporter is finally back, safe and sound, in Brazil, following the MMA scene in the country, as many subjects are constantly popping up, as always. In recent days many important things took place, mostly with Pride Bushido brining us the early, and not so early, stages of their Grand Prixes, new fights for the next Pride shaping up, many rumors about the New Year's eve Pride show, and of course, the traditional training news, and other shows rumors and facts. Needless to say, there's plenty to be told and it's better to jump ahead with the news and get updated with some of the latest from the land of Samba! As sometimes it isn't all good news, this writer would like to take a chance to leave his best wishes for the soul of one more warrior that left us. Although he wasn't a top MMA star, our young sport has been evolving and growing thanks to many pioneers, who ignore the odds and insist on brining fighting and martial arts to new grounds, so everybody can benefit in the long run, and God knows who big MMA can be in 20 years from now. Magnus Decio was one of those heroes, who didn't make money, didn't have many fans, but were brave enough to battle for their dreams, even as utopic as they could be, and break ground so others could establish in future years. When someone leaves us, mostly in dramatic fashion, it leaves us wondering if things are really worth it, but most definitely his effort was worth it, as a part of Brazil will always own him something for brining our sport to new places. May his soul rest in peace, and enjoy the news here at FCF...

Denied Credentials to UFC 55 LOS ANGELES, October 3 -- The Ultimate Fighting Championship, a mixed martial arts promotion under the direction of Zuffa, LLC and owned and operated since January 2001 by Las Vegas Station Casino magnates Lorenzo and Frank J. Fertitta III, has denied media credentials to several MMA-exclusive Web sites and publications for UFC 55 on Oct. 7, impeding these media entities from performing their full responsibilities to report the event to the public. Full Contact Fighter, a print publication and Web site that has covered the UFC and MMA worldwide since 1997, was denied a credential alongside Sherdog.com, which has reported since 1999 and is the world's top-rated English-language MMA news Web site, as ranked by Alexa.com; MMAWeekly.com, home to the most-listened-to daily MMA Internet radio show; and MMARingReport.com, Canada's top MMA news source. Brener Zwikel & Associates (BZA), a public relations firm hired to administer credentials for the event, began e-mailing credential denial notifications on September 12 that stated, "I must inform you that it has been determined [applicant] does not meet the qualifications for a media credential. Thank you for your application, and for your interest in the UFC®." No "qualifications" or criterion for approval were provided with these notifications, which, contrary to previous BZA credential notifications, were released prior to the application deadline. Zuffa has denied subsequent requests for photos, graphics and other media-related materials that they previously provided. Upon receipt of credential denial, MMA media members called and emailed BZA for clarification. BZA indicated that it acted solely upon Zuffa's directive and that further inquiries should be forwarded to Zuffa's Director of Public Relations, Jennifer Wenk. When contacted, Wenk said any qualifications BZA implemented per Zuffa during the credentialing process were internal and would not be made available to the media directly affected by this new policy. Wenk then recommended UFC President and Zuffa minority co-owner Dana White be contacted. On Sept. 20, White received a certified letter from a unified group of top MMA media that were denied credentials. The letter requested a phone call or meeting with White to address Zuffa's denial of longstanding MMA media. White did not respond. A subsequent phone call to UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta has also remained unreturned. On Sept. 30, one week before UFC 55, White spoke with a designated representative of the MMA media group and said that Zuffa had not implemented new qualifications for media credentials. White said it was his company's prerogative to accept or deny credentials and that he was presently denying all MMA-exclusive media Web sites. However, Full Contact Fighter, a print publication and Web site, was among those denied media credentials. Zuffa's decision to deny credentials has impeded Sherdog.com, Full Contact Fighter (and fcfighter.com), MMAWeekly.com, MMARingReport.com and other Web sites from providing the quality and quantity of unbiased, even-handed UFC coverage that fans and fighters have become accustomed to -- and, in many cases, dependent upon. It is with great regret and concern that these media entities cannot provide the usual pre-fight, live-fight, and post-fight coverage of UFC 55 in the form of articles, video, and audio that feature the noble athletes of this sport. |

Murray Update, Matsui to Cage Rage By David West From across the pond, here's the latest coming from the UK MMA scene: Following an altercation on Wednesday, September 28th, during which he received multiple stab wounds, British MMA star Lee Murray remains in the hospital, but is no longer in a critical condition. According to Cage Rage promoter Dave O'Donnell, Murray has regained consciousness and is able to sit up and speak. It is too early yet to say if there will be any long-term effects from the wounds Murray was inflicted, but he is reported to have already asked when he can fight again. The Metropolitan Police report that they are still making inquiries into the disturbance on the 28th. No arrests have been made at the time of writing, and the other two men who suffered stab wounds have been discharged from hospital. In Cage Rage news, experienced Pride veteran Daijiro Matsui (7-13-3) has signed to fight England's Alex Reid (8-2-0) at their next event to be held in London on December 3rd. Matsui has been in there with everyone from Quinton Jackson to Igor Vovchanchyn and presents a good challenge for the British striker. Headlining that same card will be the eagerly awaited Middleweight Title clash between Anderson Silva and Curtis Stout, who has had quite a run thus far in the popular English promotion with three consecutive KO victories. |

Spratt, Mezger Join Chuck Norris' World Combat League By Loretta Hunt "Martial arts fighting, in its many forms, is the world's most popular combat sport," reads the World Combat League's website. Tonight at the Dallas Convention Center Arena in Texas, martial arts icon Chuck Norris put his own spin on the recent surge of martial arts in America with a sneak preview of his World Combat League, a project he says he envisioned 30 years ago. Combining "the excitement of combat martial arts and the thrill of routing for your favorite team," says the recognized film and TV star, the WCL claims it is the first to meld kickboxing into the standard league format utilized by mainstream sportsand mixed martial arts fighters Pete Spratt and Guy Mezger have been drafted to take the ride. Tonight's event, along with more scheduled in the next few months across the country, will be a trial run for an 8-team national league Norris is set to launch in May 2006. Of the four teams scheduled to compete, the Houston Enforcers versus the Los Angeles Stars and the Dallas Dragons versus the Oklahoma Destroyers, Texan Spratt is scheduled to fight Paul Cantrell. From the event's promoter: Heavyweights Roberts and Hamanaka Anchor Team Japan at November 5th's MFC 5: USA vs. Japan Six years ago, Englishman Alex Roberts traveled to Japan in search of the traditional fighting arts, and on November 5th, the heavyweight prospect will proudly represent the Land of the Rising Sun as part of Mixed Fighting Championship 5: USA vs. Japan live from the Trump Tal Mahal Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Roberts will be one of ten world-class athletes set to clash with a ready team of American counterparts-- all in MFC's continued efforts to bring its unique brand of international crossover competition to American soil. "To represent Japan is a bit of an honor," says the 29-year-old Kujuken Kaikan kickboxer and # 4 ranked Pancrase veteran who now calls the country known for its rich martial arts history his home, "but a fight's a fight." And what a fight it will be: 6'4', 240-pound Roberts is set to square-off against Renzo Gracie purple belt and recent Team Quest addition Jay White. In the main event, light heavyweight Kazuhiro Hamanaka makes his U.S. debut head-to-head against American Top Team's Wilson Gouveia. Training out of the famed Takada dojo, Hamanaka touts a PRIDE victory over jiu-jitsu standout Nino Schembri in his steady rise through the Japanese ranks. Equipped to wage war both standing and on the ground, heavy hitting opponent Gouveia will certainly be a challenge. Also on the card, Philadelphia's Fight Factory phenom Eddie Alvarez steps back into the MFC ring to continue his succession of damaging dominance. In his last two MFC appearances, Alvarez has brutally dispatched Japan's Seichi Ikemoto and Russia's Danila Veselov with his fast hands and superior showmanship. Battling it out for three rounds with lightweight star Rich Clementi at MFC 3, Daisake "13" Hanawaza will look to put an end to Alvarez's reign in the ring. Is he up for the task? Lahaina Civic Center, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii October 7, 2005 There was still a long line to enter the Civic Center at almost fight time, but everyone squeezed in and packed the house to support their local Maui fighters. This was Rumble's first event on the island of Maui and they utilized the services of local promoter Bradda Kamanse to help things run smooth. The night had a number of great fights which both fighters constantly fighting for dominance in the fight. The Rob Villapando-Shane Nelson fight along with the Paco Woods-Lorrin Ishimine fight went back and forth with each fighter getting the edge only to lose it and fight to regain it. Mike Aina gets better with every fight, not only using good strategy but executing it with perfection. The contrast of Kendall Grove's ground work versus Jay Carter's stand up skills made for an interesting fight with one tactical error by Carter costing him the match. The Scott Junk-Bobby Hoffman fight never took place because Hoffman pulled out at the last minute, but it made for an interesting situation when Junk tried to coax Hoffman back into the fight. This escalated into Junk giving Hoffman a push in the cage and both fighters trying to go after each other in and out of the cage. The main event could not have capped off the night any better. The King of the Cage Champion, Lloyd "Kadillac" Marshbanks took on Hawaii's own Wes "Cabbage" Correira. Kadillac showed off incredible agility for a man his size, reversing positions and flowing on the ground. Cabbage looked revitalized from his last fight. He looked in good shape, moved really well on the ground and showed an improved sprawl that he tested to its limit with Kadillac's great wrestling. Kadillac landed some huge blows, almost every one of them looked to land on Cabbage's chin, staggering the big man back, but Cabbage showed that he can not only give, but he can take big punches. Cabbage landed a well place knee to Kadillac that turned the whole fight around. Cabbage landed a few big punches of his own, sprawled on a Kadillac shot and continued unloading on him until Kadillac fell to the canvas. Rumble's Maui debut was a huge success and marked a statewide expansion of Rumble On The Rock's event. The next Rumble scheduled for November 19th on Oahu promises to be the best ever with a huge announcement coming very soon. William Armstrong (808 Fight Factory) drew Jeremy Paet (Native Action Fight Team) Majority Draw [(20-19), (19-19), (19-19)] after 2 rounds. Kawika Ferriera (BJ Penn's MMA) drew Kevin Agliam (Native Action Fight Team) Majority Draw [(20-19), (19-19), (19-19)] after 2 rounds. Brandon Visher (Maui Full Contact Fighting) def. Jumar Dumalao (808 Fight Factory) TKO due to injury (knee) at 1:47 into R1. Kirk Wahyick (BJ Penn's MMA) def. Gene Gregor Submission via rear naked choke at 3:45 into R1. Rob Villapando (808 Fight Factory) def. "Sugar" Shane Nelson (BJ Penn's MMA) Majority decision [(20-18), (20-18), (19-19)] after 2 rounds. Mike Aina (BJ Penn's MMA/Team MADD) def. Albert Rios (228th Street Gym) Unanimous decision [(20-18), (20-18), (20-18)] after 2 rounds. Paco Woods (BJ Penn's MMA) def. Lorrin Ishimine (Maui Full Contact Fighting) Majority decision [(19-19), (20-19), (20-19)] after 2 rounds. Kendall Groves (Cobra Kai) def. Jay Carter (BJ Penn's MMA) Submission via triangle choke at 3:25 into R1. Scott Junk (BJ Penn's MMA) vs. Bobby Hoffman (Shark Tank) Never took place because Hoffman pulled out at the last minute. Both fighters were brought into the ring to announce what happened and Junk called out Hoffman. Junk even pushed Hoffman and the fight almost took place right there. Both fighters had to be held back and settled down. Wes "Cabbage" Correira (BJ Penn's MMA) def. Lloyd "Kadillac" Marshbanks TKO via referee stoppage at 3:16 into R1. |

News and Notes from Canadian MMA By Kelsey Mowatt This inaugural edition of The Northern Touch on www.fcfighter.com brings word from TKO Super Lightweight Champion Mark Hominick on his recent title defense over Ryan Diaz at September 30th's TKO 22. Also in this week's column, Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Joe Doerksen shares his thoughts on his recent win over Brendan Seguin at King of the Cage: Firestorm and his upcoming fight with Jason Macdonald. Mark "The Machine" Hominick: Ready for All Comers Team Tompkins fighter Mark "The Machine" Hominick, defended his TKO Super Lightweight Championship last weekend at TKO 22, by stopping Team Gibson veteran Ryan Diaz in the third round with strikes. For Hominick, now 23, the win is now the second time he has defeated Diaz by TKO, with their first fight ending in the second round due to a cut at TKO 13. The first fight featured Hominick dominating the standing action with strikes, and soon led to Diaz attempting to end the fight from the ground. Hominick was able to avoid any submission attempts from Diaz on his back however, and opened the cut that eventually stopped the fight with a barrage of punches onto the Gibson fighter. At TKO 22, however, Diaz continued to press the action standing, a tactic that surprised the Super Lightweight Champion, considering Hominick's striking capabilities. "I did not think Diaz would stand up as long as he did, I figured he would stand until I began to get the better of him, but not for the entirety of the fight," says Hominick. "I knew being a 5-round fight, the later into the rounds the fight went, the more I would dictate the pace and control the action." Eight of Diaz's 11 victories had all come via submission, although recently at TKO 20, the Port Moody fighter dominated Phillipe Lagace with strikes ending the fight in the first round. Hominick quickly noticed Diaz's revamped striking game at TKO 22. "He has improved immensely; he is much more methodical and calm in his attacks. The first time I fought him he threw a lot of flying knees and punches but in this fight he was attempting more combinations and set ups." Hominick, who carries a 16-0 record in kickboxing and has held numerous titles such as the ISKA Super Welterweight Kickboxing Championship, maintains he was never really in trouble during the fight, despite Diaz's improved stand up skills. 4-Man Tourney Cleared at WEC 17 Weigh-ins By Loretta Hunt LEMOORE, California (October 13, 2005) - Central California's most popular fight promotion, World Extreme Cagefighting, kicked off its official weigh-ins this afternoon for its 17th installment in four-plus years. The event's longevity has become quite an asset for fighters looking to get their feet wet, clock in some solid victories, or even make a comeback. In particular, a 4-man light heavyweight tournament could yield a clear prospect for advancement in the circuit, as one fighter's hand will be raised two times once the night is through. Understanding this opportunity, all four athletes involved came in under required numbers today, along with alternate Tait Fletcher, who will be on standby should one of the competitors not be able to continue on to the finals. Elsewhere on the card, super heavyweights Jimmy Ambriz and Ricco Rodriguez hit the scales at 303 and 288 pounds; and heavyweights Corey Salter and Lavar Johnson were recorded at 259 and 242 pounds. Light heavyweight and Lion's Den instructor Vernon "Tiger" White made weight at 203.5 pounds, yet opponent Alex Stiebling had a bit of a struggle. 12 pounds over the first time he stepped on the scales, Stiebling made it within four pounds an hour later, but as of the weigh-ins "official" closing had not checked in again. However, he is expected to make weight to compete Friday. Click here to continue the article |

WEC 17: Halloween Fury 4 All Treat, Few Tricks By Loretta Hunt LEMOORE, California (October 14, 2005) Live from the Palace Indian Gaming Center, World Extreme Cagefighting hosted its 17th event in four years, and once again, it was standing room only for the throngs of crazed fans that came out to see their local heroes and notables of the sport compete in no less than 15 bouts in central California's most famous cage. Among the "names," a super heavyweight Ricco Rodriguez got back to his winning ways with a versed performance against the 300-pound Jimmy Ambriz in the main event. Rodriguez played a patient game in letting Ambriz pucker himself out along the fence trying to get the former UFC heavyweight champion down, then later unloaded with some left-rights and a final knee that crumbled his fellow Huntington Beach counterpart to the mat for a tapout. Vernon "Tiger" White scored a knockout on a game Alex Stiebling tonight nine seconds into the second round, following a very close first round. With a verbal Ken Shamrock coaching from his corner, White eked out the first five minutes after reversing Stiebling from the top and landing some connecting head and body shots through Stiebling's guard. White is reported to have broken his hand for his efforts. Gil Castillo also made his return to competition tonight after a 16-month absence with a second round victory over a passionate but ultimately outclassed Steve Ramirez. Local Ramirez did land a few punches on Castillo that would force the Cesar Gracie rep to shoot, but Castillo never seemed to really be in any true trouble as he eased himself on to the TKO win throwing punches to Ramirez's head after mounting his back.
A Tournament Unfolds A main attraction of tonight's event was the 4-Man Light Heavyweight tournament, a format of fighting that has been all but eliminated in America in the last few years with the onset of the Unified Rules of Combat, but can still be visited on unaffected sovereign land. The tournament has its benefits, as fans naturally become invested in its build-up and the familiarity of watching a fighter perform more than once in a night. However, fighters tend to get hurt in fights, and more times than not, the rightful victor from a first fight can not move on to his second. Tonight was an example of the latter, and a shame for fans (and the fighters involved) because all four participants truly proved they belonged there, which made it a credible endeavor indeed. On the eve of his first fight back since ACL surgery and overcoming the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, Rich "No Love" Clementi jokes about life, love and the pursuit of happiness.
Rich Clementi By Traci Ratzloff It was nearly a year ago, February 26, 2005 to be exact, when Rich Clementi felt the pop of a torn ACL. Anyone who has experienced a knee injury, and probably those who have just seen one occur, will vouch for the excruciating pain that immediately twists and turns through the body. "It happened at 1:20 in the first," Clementi remembers. "He had me in half guard. I was on top, and my leg got caught. I felt it rip and pop out of the socket. I think he did, too. He said something to the ref in Japanese, but he didn't hear." Clementi continues, "After the second round, I was ready to give up. I never had an injury like that." Discussing the matter with his manager and corner, Monte Cox, it was decided that if Clementi could continue, he should. He had already, after all, won the first two rounds, and a three-fight deal with MFC Euphoria was waiting on the other end of the W. So, in his MFC Euphoria-USA vs. World bout with Japan's Daisuke Hanazawa, Clementi forged through a very painful two and a half rounds to win a unanimous decision, torn ACL and all. The injury caused Clementi to do something he had never even considered, let alone done, since he decided to make MMA his career: take time off. It's been 8 months since the injury and only recently was he able to begin working out again. "I used my hamstring tendon for my ACL replacement," Clementi reveals. Choosing to use his own tendon rather than an artificial one, Clementi felt more comfortable knowing where the surrogate came from. What he didn't know, however, was the difference in recovery time. He confesses, "If I had knee surgery alone, recovery would have been okay, but using my hamstring hindered me way more than I thought." Perhaps what came as a shock most was the toll the recovery took on him mentally. "Psychologically, it wore on me. I can remember cornering one of my guys, and I had to drag my crutches up to the cage with me. It was hard for me to rely on them for everything." Click here to continue the article |

From the event's promoter: Leading U.S. Shooto event to crown first-ever Americas Division champions. HAMMOND, IN - On Saturday, November 19th, diehard fight fans will visit the pumps and pay good money to fuel up in preparation for a ritual trek from all corners of the Midwest to a common destination in Hammond, Indiana. Once again, the Hammond Civic Center will host the annual Ironheart Crown full-contact submission prize-fighting event, sanctioned by the International Shooto Commission based out of Tokyo, Japan. In this year's show, the recently established Shooto Americas chapter, covering North, Central, and South America, will crown its first-ever champions in the Lightweight and Featherweight divisions. In the Lightweight division, local hero and international fight veteran Jeff Curran (27W-7L-1D) will take on one of his most dangerous opponents to date in the form of a stone-faced Canadian by the name of Antonio Carvalho (9W-0L-0D). Curran needs no introduction, having fought the world over against top international opponents, beating the likes of Baret Yoshida, Bao Quach, Ryan Ackerman, and others. While not quite as seasoned, his opponent, Antonio Carvalho boasts an undefeated record with all but one of his wins by smooth submission or brutal TKO, a testament to his balanced fighting skills. Included in his list of credentials is a second round TKO over Brian Geraghty (14W-10L-1D), a first round triangle choke submission over Tommy Lee (13W-5D-0L), and a recent decision win over one of Japan's finest lightweights, Lion Takeshi (6-1-0). This Shooto Americas Lightweight Division tile bout pits America's best against Canada's finest. One will emerge victorious and claim the belt to become the first ever regional champion in the Shooto Americas Lightweight Division. Click here to continue press release |

Total Combat Invades America: Hops North of Border for Tenth Event By Loretta Hunt Total Combat Promotions made its U.S. debut Saturday night at the Golden Acorn Casino in Campo, California, over an hour east of San Diego and just minutes from the Mexican border where the promotion had held nine previous events in Tijuana since February 2004.
Among an assemblage of local fighters that attracted some 2,931 spectators to the small casino situated on a very desolate Interstate 8, Total Combat's tenth effort featured the return of Jeremy Jackson to the ring following a two-year absence from competition. It took Jackson a moment or two to get his bearings against a very game Christian Vargas, but once the UFC veteran found his rhythm, he thoroughly controlled the action by scoring a takedown and moving from side control to mount where Vargas gave his back to escape Jackson's elbow onslaught. Panicked as his more experienced foe crowded him with head punches from behind, Vargas attempted to stand and Jackson latched on the rear naked choke for the tap out.

Results from FX3 The Battle of Britain Rivermead Leisure Complex, Reading, UK Saturday 15th October 2005 By David West The second outing for Britain's latest MMA promotion FX3 matched English scrappers against battlers from Ireland, Brazil and Germany. In the main event, Paul Daley claimed the vacant FX3 Welterweight Title when he dropped Germany's Peter Angerer with a flurry in Daley's corner. Angerer landed on all fours and his sudden descent to the canvas prompted the referee to jump in and stop the contest, which seemed to come as a surprise to Angerer who appeared to have his wits about him. UFC and HOOKnSHOOT veteran Leigh Remedios chose to stand and trade with Sami Berik, a San Shou stylist who tagged the British grappler several times before Remedios took the fight to the canvas where he secured Berik's back and forced him to tap out with a rear naked choke. Nova Uniao BJJ team member Jose Aldo impressed with a dominating performance against Mickey Young, from Northern Ireland, blasting out the TKO stoppage with a powerful two-fisted assault from the mount. Knock-out of the night had to go to Mark Chen who survived an early onslaught from Ricky Moore to catch his opponent charging forwards with a straight right that put Moore flat on his back and out cold.

Across the Pond: Tug of War for Monson? Baroni vs. Weir? Murray Home By David West Cage Rage has released more details on the line-up for their December 3rd show, which now includes UFC veteran Jeff "The Snowman" Monson. Conflicting rumors have been circulating in the UK, with rival promotion Cage Warriors announcing that Monson would appear on their November 26th show, which features Monson on the promotional posters. However, Cage Rage has confirmed Monson has signed to meet France's Kristof Midoux at their event. Monson is more experienced than the Frenchman and has not lost since 2002, winning his last twelve fights in a row. Midoux is a K-1 veteran, whose record currently stands at 4-5-0. Two other fights are awaiting confirmation - Cage Rage is negotiating for Phil Baroni to make his British debut against Mark Weir in what could be a classic slugfest, while Travis Lutter has been forced to pull out of his scheduled bout with Antonio Schembri following an injury. Cage Rage is hoping to entice Jorge Rivera to take on Schembri in Lutter's place. Filling out the card is Brad Pickett's first defense of his British Featherweight Title against Robbie Olivier, the return of Sol Gilbert against Frenchman Xavier Foupa-Pokam and Ross Mason versus the undefeated Darren Guisha. Fans of Lee Murray will be pleased to hear that he is out of the hospital and convalescing at home, already talking about fighting Matt Lindland and Mark Weir. By Kelsey Mowatt This week's Northern Touch takes a close look at this past Saturday's Extreme Fighting Challenge (XFC) event. Full Contact Fighter caught up with Richard Nancoo and Justin Tavernini to discuss their victories at XFC 4, along with veteran MMA fighter and XFC promoter Bill "the Butcher" Mahood, who shares his thoughts about the October 15th event. "The Butcher's" XFC: Canada's Latest MMA Mainstay Prince George, British Columbia hosted XFC 4 this past Saturday, and with a reported crowd of approximately 2,300 people, the event continues to draw impressive numbers considering the cities population of around 80,000 residents. The event's promoter Bill Mahood was not only quick to praise his hometown audience, but the city's new arena as well for contributing to the event's overall feel. "The fans in Prince George are great. Very enthusiastic, they're MMA savvy. The CN center is a very new 6,000-seat arena. We configure it so that 2,300 gives a close feel. The sound and production company did exceptional work with two big screens, smoke, lasers, and a crazy light show. All 28 fighters came ready to lay down and the fans benefited fully." UFC 53 veteran Mahood resides, trains, and teaches at the Prince George Fight Club, and was extremely happy to see two of his own fighters, Kenny Butterfield and Kajan Johnson, come away from the event with victories. Kajan Johnson had been slated to fight Canadian MMA veteran Sean"Pain" Peters, but ended up taking on a game Gord Cummings, when Peters dropped out of the fight only a few weeks ago. "We were very disappointed when Pain Peters dropped the fight for the second straight year. We felt Pain would have been a great return fight for Kajan," Mahood explained, "Instead, we were lucky enough to find Gord Cummings who took the fight with only a few weeks notice." Johnson was unshaken by his change in opponent, however, and managed not to disappoint his hometown audience winning by TKO in the first round. |

And all three -- Travis Wiuff, LaVerne Clark and Tyrone Roberts -- have hopes of a return visit before they finish their MMA careers. Wiuff (38-6) of nearby Rochester, Minn., will take on Jimmy Westfall of El Paso, Texas, in the main event of Extreme Challenge 65 this Friday at the Medina Entertainment Center. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. with the first fight starting at 8:30 p.m. This will be a brief return to the heavyweight division for Wiuff, who is trying to make a mark at the light heavyweight (205-under) division. Westfall is expected to weigh 235, while Wiuff will be about 220. Clark (19-13) of Davenport, Iowa, was 4-1 in the early UFC events, but has struggled with consistency in his attempt to make it back. Heating Up for Pride 30: Ninja Prepared to Get Back into Winner's Circle By Eduardo Alonso After eight months off and watching his younger brother tear up the PRIDE ranks, Murilo "Ninja" Rua is back, eager and ready to start a new phase of competition and push his career into the next gear. FCF caught up with the 25-year-old fighter on the eve of his PRIDE 30 return against 5-12 Hot 2 Handle veteran Murad Chunkaiev. FCF: You're finally back in PRIDE, and this time are fighting a Golden Glory fighter, Murad Chunkaiev. What do you know about your opponent? MR: I'm very happy to be back in PRIDE. He comes from a great team and he's seems to look more for takedowns, and be considerably aggressive. Anyway, I'm well trained and ready to pursue the win. FCF: Your last fight was against Quinton Jackson at PRIDE 29 last February and it was kind of controversial, where you lost by split decision in a fight many thought you won. How do you feel about this fight, did you feel the judges' decision was unfair? MR: I had around one month to train for the fight 'cause before that, I was doing a seminar tour in the USA. I thought it was a tough fight, a "busy fight," where I ended up doing more of his stuff, and that's a lot of wrestling, which is not my main thing. Despite that, I think I pressed the fight harder and deserved to win the bout. I beat him by a very slim margin, but I beat him. FCF: During the last few months, there was a lot of talk about you fighting in Korea and also in the UFC, but you ended up not fighting at all. Would you say that this frustrated or motivated you even more? MR: I'm a fighter and my biggest joy is to be inside the ring, however, to participate in any MMA show is not only up to me. So, when there are no fights coming up, I keep training hard and take the chance to do seminars across the world - it's part of the game. |

for Substance Abusers By Loretta Hunt Regulations affecting unarmed combatants caught using banned substances in Nevada just got a little tougher. As of October 21st, the Nevada State Athletic Commission has the jurisdiction to change the results of an unarmed combat bout to a "No Contest" when a participant is found in violation of its banned substances provisions for steroids and other unapproved drugs. Amendment RO58-05 pertains to boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts bouts where an athlete either won or drew his contest, then did not pass requisite drug testing afterwards. Altered rulings will be handled on a case by case basis under the NSAC's "sole discretion" following review. Similar guidelines are already in place in both New Jersey as well as New York, where an April 30th heavyweight boxing championship victory for James Toney over John Ruiz was changed to a "No Contest" when Toney tested positive for a banned substance. Toney was subsequently stripped of his title by the WBA on May 11th. In MMA, where a promotion acts as its owning sanctioning body, it will be up to the individual promotion to penalize a title holder following a "No Contest" ruling. Not retroactive in nature, this amendment will not affect recent Ultimate Fight Night 1 participant Nathan Marquardt's pending case with the NSAC where he allegedly tested positive for steroids following his August 6th victory over Ivan Salaverry, and then tested negative in a second test administered a week later. Marquardt has submitted a letter to the NSAC stating he "did not intentionally" take substances not approved for use by the Commission and a hearing for his case will be tentatively scheduled for next month. |
From the event's promoter: HOOKnSHOOT 2005 Women's Grand Prix November 19, 2005 Since 2002, HOOKnSHOOT has been the hotbed and advocate of women's Mixed Martial Arts. Even the event promoters themselves said they would never do a women's show after a spectacular event in April 2002.....but they did. In November 2004, the women topped themselves with yet another show. "Evolution" far surpassed the first event with more skilled and faster-paced fights that still has people talking. On Saturday, November 19, HnS takes another monumental leap. For the first in North America 8-women will step into the ring but only one will become the "Queen of the Ring." "I'm not a fan of tournaments. You run the risk of athletes who fight long fights versus an athlete who got a :10 second win. I guess it adds to the excitement" says Jeff Osborne. "I asked the women what THEY wanted. 15 out of 17 of the women asked said they would rather do a tournament than just a single fight. They don't get the opportunity to fight but maybe once or twice a year (if they're lucky). This may be the reason." continues Osborne. Not only will fighters be paid per fight (the two finalists get considerably more) but there is an even bigger prize. A championship belt that has been hand crafted by legendary belt makers Reggie Parks and Ed Chuman. The belt has been appraised at over $3,200 and the winner takes it home as the ultimate trophy. "I wanted to give an opportunity to the new women or women who maybe jumped into things a little too early and have a few loses. If all goes well, I'll run a tournament with Howe, Montoya, Modafferi, Fuji and some of the others who've achieved success. But for now, I think this tournament could produce several new female stars" says Osborne. As of press times, these are the current tournament pairings: JULIE KEDZIE GINELE MARQUEZ MYSTEE BLACKWOOD JAN FINNEY LISA WARD KELLYN HEUHN DIXIE VOLKMAR MISSY KARR The promotion recently signed with a major marketing firm who will be sending up a Universal Studios film crew to chronicle the entire weekend's happenings. Nick Ring (AMC Pankration-Kirkland, WA.), also of the Pride organization, returns to Icon to match Mike Malone. Ring, a muay-thai kickboxing specialist, submitted Kimo Woelfel via rear naked choke at the July 23rd Icon event. From the event's promoter: in Extreme Challenge 65 MEDINA, Minn. -- Travis Wiuff's training with jiu-jitsu standout Jeremy Horn was very apparent as the "former" ground-and-pound specialist secured an armbar victory over Jimmy Westfall in the main event of Extreme Challenge 65. It was first armbar submission for Wiuff, a 2-time UFC veteran, who improved to 39-6 overall. "I thought about just pounding like usual when I got on top, but then I thought I should use some of the things I've been working on with Jeremy," Wiuff said. "I've learned so much since I started training in Utah... I'm glad I got to show something in my fight." Meanwhile, LaVerne Clark notched his 20th victory with a technical knockout win over tough Cruz Chacon near the end of the first round. Clark, a 5-time UFC vet, dropped Chacon after a barrage of punches and the referee stepped in to prevent further damage. Chacon did manage to break Clark's nose during the bout. The third UFC veteran on the card, Tyrone Roberts, did not fare as well as he lost a close decision to Ron Fields. Roberts, who stands 5-foot-9, competing up a weight class and struggled with the 6-foot-4 Fields' reach advantage. In a very close majority decision, Sean Huffman defeated local favorite Joey Clark by scores of 29-29, 29-28 and 29-28. The bout featured many takedowns by Clark and lots of reversals by Huffman. Local standout Dan Casey stayed unbeaten with a surprisingly quick 22-second armbar win over K-1 MMA veteran Gabe Lemley. Casey is now 17-0-1. Also, Jake Ellenberger of Omaha, Neb., moved to 6-0 with a ground-and-pound win over previously unbeaten Evan Boemer. Complete results...

By Jim Genia Rhino Fight Team. Team Tiger Schulmann. Team Renzo. Pitts Penn. Fight Factory. Representatives from some of the top East Coast MMA teams are assembling, ready to do battle on the shores New Jersey as fans cheer on their local favorites. The ninth edition of promoter Lou Neglia's Ring of Combat show is slated for October 29th at the Asbury Park Convention Hall in Asbury Park, and MMA enthusiasts will be treated to a roster of up-and-comers as well as what looks to be a potential barn-burning 174-pound championship bout. Here's a look at some of the fighters: Danny Suarez Rhino Fight Team A Ring of Combat and King of the Cage veteran, Suarez is the total package. Sporting a jiu-jitsu brown belt and some serious Muay Thai skills, he's paid his dues both on the mats and in the ring (he won his last kickboxing bout by TKO in the third round). On October 29th Suarez gets a well-deserved shot at a championship belt. Who's the man standing between this East Coast rising star and the title? Marlon Sims. Marlon Sims Farang Mu Sul Representing the eclectic Korean art of Farang Mu Sul, Sims returns to the East Coast after going four rounds for a championship kickboxing belt at Combat at the Capitale in June. His punches are fast and his sidekick is accurate as hell but does he have enough skill on the ground to survive against Suarez? Joe Andujar Rhino Fight Team At the last Ring of Combat, the scrappy Andujar debuted against Farang Mu Sul rep Joey Spataro. Andujar's superior conditioning helped him earn the decision, but Ring of Combat 9 will see him square off against Joey's brother, Anthony. Does Andujar have enough in his tank to defeat a sibling out for revenge? Mike Iannone Farang Mu Sul Having armbarred a judo black belt at the last show, Iannone proved he's got some skill on the ground to go with his kicking. This time out though, he faces Team Tiger Schulmann's Uriah Hall a blackbelt who's sure to be capable both on the ground and on his feet. Will Iannone get his chin tested this time around? Or will he score another win for his school? Erik Uresk Brighton Beach Wrestling Club He's a veteran of the Underground Combat League in New York City and competes nationally in Greco-Roman wrestling, but the tough Erik Uresk is coming off a TKO loss in July and is hungry for redemption. Does he have what it takes to defeat the more-experienced James "Binky" Jones? Or will the Team Renzo rep from Baltimore hand him his second MMA loss? The full card: Ring of Combat 174-pound Championship Marlon Sims (FMS-TVT) vs. Danny Suarez (Rhino Fight Team) Welterweight Kevin Roddy (Team Renzo Gracie) vs. Joey Spataro (FMS-TVT/Kioto BJJ) Joe Andujar (Rhino Fight Team) vs. Anthony Spataro (FMS-TVT/Kioto BJJ) Mark Getto (Advanced Fighting Systems) vs. Frank Edgar (Rhino Fight Team) Eric Uresk (Kioto BJJ) vs. James "Binky" Jones (Ground Control) Middleweight Adam Fearon (Rhino Fight Team) vs. Lyman Good (Team TSK) Jay Coleman (Rhino Fight Team) vs. David Porter (East End Martial Arts) Scott Molloy (Rhino Fight Team) vs. Steve Macabe (The Fight Factory) Phillippe Nover (Team Renzo Gracie/UDS) vs Mike McQuade (Freestyle) Light-heavyweight Tim Deiturriaga (Advanced Fighting Systems) vs. Garrett Carmondy (Pitt's Penn) Joe Thompson (ACK) vs. Ken Gibson (FMS-TVT) Mike Iannone (FMS-TVT/Kioto BJJ) vs. Uriah Hall (Team TSK) |
Macaco Impresses in Grudge Match Report by Eduardo Alonso Photographs by Marcelo Alonso Slowly and gradually the sport of MMA continues to grab hold back in Sao Paulo, Brazil's biggest city, after its ban around four years ago. One of the most important steps in this direction has been Showfight, currently the biggest MMA event being held in the city. Promoted by businessman Oscar Maroni, the show targets a large audience by not only presenting Mixed Martial Arts fighting, but also mixing in other forms of fighting along with other types of entertainment as well. ShowFight 3, held on October 21st at Ibirapuera Arena in Sao Paulo, was the biggest edition of the promotion so far, and this time the "side show" had former playmates, Penthouse pets and the like, doing "wrestling" in the middle of the ring, while tearing their costumes off. This may give you an idea of the feeling of the show.
In terms of fighting, ShowFight 3 biggest attraction was without a doubt, the grudge match between Pride and UFC veteran Jorge "Macaco" Patino, and Ryan Gracie student Gabriel Vella. Macaco and Vella had some issues years and yeas ago, during a Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Sao Paulo, and with both Macaco and Ryan dominating the Jiu-Jitsu market in the city, is natural that this rivalry would be even bigger. The Ibirapuera arena, which had around five thousand spectators on hand, was split into Macaco and Vella supporters, coming from both academies, and the environment was fierce, with anticipation of berserk going on at any time. Although the show's organization wasn't anywhere near perfect, thankfully no incidents took place, besides a massive invasion of the ring after the bout, and the spectacle was left for the fighters. Macaco came in wild and aggressive as always, and truly didn't give Vella a chance in the bout. Applying a number of different strikes, courtesy of his Chute Boxe training, Patino managed to connect with a left hand hook, after dropping his guard as a feint, that sent Vella to dreamland on the spot, and made his fans erupt in celebration. A solid display by the 32 year old fighter, who challenged Ryan Gracie after the bout.
Here are the results: Jiu-Jitsu: Augusto Ferrari def. Paulo Rorito by 4 points to 2 Submission Wrestling: Marcelo Zulu def. Marcos Souza by 4 points to 2 Muay Thai: Luis Sorriso (Chute Boxe) def. Diego Sebastiao (Never Shake) by unanimous judges' decision MMA: Michelle Tavares (Nova Uniao) def. Carina Damm (Chute Boxe) by triangle choke in R2 Xuxa def. Tiago Cruz by TKO in R1 Silmar Rodrigo def. Sandro Lopes by TKO in R2 Fabio Negao def. Alex Gaze by KO in R1 Eduardo Pamplona def. Alessandro Stefan (Macaco Gold Team) by TKO in R1 Claudio Godoy def. Endo Makoto by TKO in R2 Jorge Patino (Chute Boxe) def. Gabriel Vella (Gracie Barra) by KO in R1 |
From the event's promoter: SATURDAY NOVEMBER 5th AT COLISEE DES BOIS-FRANCS IN VICTORIAVILLE! A NIGHT OF SUPERSTARS IN CANADA'S MMA CAPITAL! MONTREAL (CANADA) TKO Major League MMA is thrilled to announce their line up for TKO 23: EXTREMETM to be held on November 5th, 2005 at The Colisee Des Bois-Francs in beautiful Victoriaville, Quebec. This marvelous fight card will be headlined by a co-main event in which Canadian superstar, Jonathan Goulet will square off against the crafty veteran, Shonie Carter. Also, TKO's new Lightweight Champion, Sam Stout, will rematch former champion, Donald Ouimet. These two electrifying fights will cap off a night of extreme mixed martial arts action! Fresh off his victorious UFC debut, JONATHAN GOULET (14-5-0) continues to fight the best welterweight competition in the world as he collides with the always dangerous, SHONIE CARTER (31-13-6). Goulet comes into this fight riding a very impressive nine fight winning streak which includes dominating performances over John Alessio, Tony Fryklund and Kyle Jensen. He recently fought Jay Hieron in the UFC's Ultimate Fight Night 2 on Spike TV. His exciting fight could not be shown on television as it looked "like a horror film" per the words of UFC President, Dana White. It was reportedly even more brutal than his fight against Fryklund. Goulet landed devastating punches and knees which opened up several nasty cuts on Hieron's forehead leaving the octagon looking like an animal had just been slaughtered. Carter is not intimidated; he's been in the ring with the best mixed martial arts has to offer. Carter's unorthodox standup and excellent wrestling skills will test Goulet to the fullest. Can Goulet continue to steamroll the competition on his way to international fame? Or, will the wily veteran, Carter, prove once again why he is so highly regarded in the fight game? These two impeccable athletes are set to brawl in this contest of momentous importance! The two best Lightweights in the history of Canadian mixed martial arts are set to go at it again! The young phenom, SAM STOUT (7-1-1) won a razor thin split decision victory over DONALD OUIMET (10-4-0) in their first encounter at TKO 21. Ouimet immediately requested a rematch and Stout was more than happy to oblige him. In their first fight, neither fighter showed much interest in taking the fight to the ground. Instead, they chose to treat the sell out crowd to a very entertaining and tremendously technical standup clash between a traditional Muay Thai fighter, Stout, and a seasoned boxer, Ouimet. The stakes don't get any higher as this fight will solidify who the best Lightweight in Canada is! Team Tompkins' newest sensation, CHRIS HORODECKI (1-0-0) will challenge DAVE GOULET (6-3-0) in a fight that promises colossal fireworks! Most TKO fans are still buzzing from Goulet versus Stout at TKO 18 which many consider one of the best fights in Canadian mixed martial arts history. This fight has all the markings of being on the same epic proportions! Horodecki will undoubtedly attempt to use his stunning Muay Thai skills to overwhelm his opponent. But, Goulet has shown numerous times that he has the heart of a lion. His only losses have been to the current and former TKO Lightweight Champions, Stout and Ouimet. He will use his crisp boxing skills on his feet and his ever improving ground and pound technique on the mat in an attempt to derail this new, young phenom's ascension through the ranks. This match-up has "show stealer" written all over it! No fight card is complete without some bad blood and controversy surrounding it. THIERRY QUENNEVILLE (8-3-0) versus MAX MARIN (5-6-0) will provide the bad blood and controversy for TKO 23! Marin was livid after the referee's stoppage at 2:46 of round one in their first fight, only one month prior, at TKO 22. Quenneville was taking the fight to Marin and was in the midst of a seemingly brutal ground and pound when the referee decided to halt the contest. Marin, apparently unaffected by the punishment quickly jumped to his feet and pleaded his case. At TKO 23, Marin will get the opportunity to avenge his loss and prove his point. Quenneville, on the other hand, will look to shut Marin up and move one step closer to his long awaited title shot. Order your tickets now through the TKO Ticket office (1-866-445-8886). By Kelsey Mowatt Macdonald Defeats Doerksen for UCW 3 Upset Jason "the Athlete" Macdonald defeated top-ranked Canadian middleweight Joe Doerksen this past Saturday, October 23rd in Winnipeg, Manitoba at Ultimate Cage Wars 3. Macdonald pulled off the upset victory in front of Doerksen's hometown fans by submitting his opponent in the fourth round via rear naked choke. Macdonald's victory marks his second consecutive win in a row, as the Athlete also defeated another highly regarded Winnipeg fighter, Chris Fontaine, with the same move at September's Maximum Fighting Championships 8. Previously, Macdonald had dropped four fights in a row against solid opposition in Jason Brilz, Matt Horwich, Marvin Eastman and Shonie Carter. The losses to Eastman, Brilz and Carter were all by judges' decision, while Horwich submitted Macdonald by armbar at the Extreme Fighting Championships 3 in October 2004. Macdonald appears to be settling into his new weight division nicely, a move to middleweight that the Red Deer native made when he fought Carter at TKO 21. Despite hometown favorite Doerksen losing the main event fight to Macdonald, the 2,500 fans that attended UCW 3 were treated to a four-round, back and forth headliner fight that saw both fighters nearly finish the fight before it's eventual stoppage. |

Icon Sport 43: Opposites Attract Held October 28, 2005 Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii Report by Chris Onzuka Photos by Daisy Rosas Icon Sport put together the most anticipated fight in Hawaii since Egan Inoue vs. Marcelo Tigre. The local boy and former Icon Sport Champion, Falaniko Vitale takes on the most dangerous "Haole" (foreigner) to come to Hawaii since Captain Cook. The man they call Mayhem, Jason "Mayhem" Miller. Both fighters are coming off of big losses after reaching the pinnacle of their careers. After capturing the Icon Sport Middleweight title with a spectacular knock out of Masanori Suda, it was Vitale who got KO'd by Robbie Lawler in his first title defense. Miller, on the other hand, has been on a tear, not losing a fight in Hawaii in his five appearances. This earned him a shot in the UFC, where he lost a bloody battle to Georges St. Pierre. Miller returned to Hawaii to settle a score with Mark Moreno, taking him out in the first round. Miller's antics have created a love-hate relationship with the local Hawaii crowd. The fans that hate him, really hate him, but Miller has become a kind of adopted son of Hawaii earning the respect of Hawaii fight fans with his ability to "walk the talk." The winner of this fight earns a shot at current champ Robbie Lawler. The war began as both fighters met in the center of the ring and fired off leg kicks at the same time. From then on, it was a great back and forth war with Miller taking the edge on the ground and Niko landing hard punches on their feet. The deciding factor in the fight was Miller's ability to take Vitale down and kept him there. After barely surviving a tight rear naked choke by Vitale, Miller turned the whole fight around by taking Vitale's back and slipping in a choke of his own to end the match. The respect and admiration of the fans as seen by the uproar when Miller won the fight showed that Miller has won over more than his fair share of Hawaii's fans.
