TKO 17: Revenge
Colisee Des Bois-Francs
Saturday September 25th - Victoriaville, Canada

(MONTREAL, CANADA) - TKO Major League MMA would like to announce the following two changes to their TKO 17 REVENGE fight card. Richard Nancoo was forced to withdraw from his super-lightweight title fight against Mark Hominick. Nancoo sustained a knee injury during his arduous training regimen. Stepping in will be Shane Rice. Rice's record may be 0-2 in professional MMA; however, his first loss was to the highly touted Ivan Menjivar on last minute notice. His second loss was to a tough Stephane Vigneault who didn't make weight for the fight.

TKO president Stephane Patry added the following comments: "Shane has done me two favors with the Menjivar and Vigneault fights. He fought Menjivar on 24 hours notice and then stepped in the ring without complaining against an opponent who couldn't make weight. He's highly regarded amongst grappling circles; He is the only jiu-jitsu brown belt under Rickson Gracie in Canada. He also is the same style fighter with the same build as Richard Nancoo. I know my champion Mark Hominick has been training hard for Richard so it was important for me to give him a similar fighter. Therefore, I believe this match up works well for many reasons. Hopefully we can do the Nancoo-Hominick II fight another day."

Shane Rice offered some thoughts of his own. "I find it amusing that I'm scheduled to replace the guy who on several occasions pulled out last minute to fight me. How many times do you need to pull out of a fight to get inducted into the MMA Hall of Fame? I am thrilled to be given the opportunity to step up and face Canada's most dangerous super-lightweight fighter in Mark Hominick."

Jason St-Louis was forced to withdraw from his scheduled fight against Jonathan Goulet. St-Louis was upset to hear doctors inform him of a lung infection and looks forward to have the chance to fight in TKO again, an opportunity he's been waiting for a very long time. Blake Fredrickson will be replacing him; Fredrickson comes from Gibson Kickboxing and Pankration and has a professional record of 6-1-0. His normal fighting weight is 155lbs but he's agreed to face Goulet at 170lbs. TKO President Stephane Patry stated that this fight will not affect Blake's run at the lightweight title currently held by Donald Ouimet.

Fans can Order tickets now through the TKO Ticket office (514-999-7531) and at Le Colisee des Bois-Francs. Tickets are going at a furious pace!

Apex Championship Fighting Card Takes Hits:
Fighters Rally To Save Sunday Night Debut

Report by Loretta Hunt
Photographs by Keith Mills

Apex Championship Fighting matchmaker Alex Capporicci has not had any easy time in the last week. Excluding the requisite last-minute injuries, common on the majority of fight cards heading into their final stretch before showtime, Apex organizers have also had to contend with, of all things, the succession of hurricanes currently pounding Florida's shores.
Hallman, Schultz & Lindland

Hallman, Schultz & Lindland pay rapt attention at the rules meeting - Well, Hallman and Schultz anyway.
Mother Nature's wrath will keep Inferno Muay Thai fighters Crafton Wallace and Stu Hasselmeyer from making the trip north to face proposed opponents Fritz Paul and Brent Beauparlant. Paul was rematched with UFC vet Steve Berger this morning, who lost his own scheduled opponent Jay Jack to incomplete medical papers. The two were to have fought at 175 pounds, but Berger will now meet Paul at middleweight. "It's stressful," admits Berger of his last-minute assignment. "Obviously the guy's gonna be bigger and stronger and every guy's a tough guy in this game. But, it's one of those things where I've traveled all this way and I need a dance partner. I'm confident though. I trained for this."

Also a victim to injury was "big show" luminary Dennis Hallman, who was to have faced Miletich Martial Arts rep Tony Fryklund in one of the featured bouts. Some fighters might be hesitant to take a last-minute opportunity against the seasoned heavy hitter Fryklund, but Team Chaos member Chris Myers has risen to the task on just five days notice. Although only 2-3 in pro action, underdog Myers believes he will be able to catch his 10-3 adversary for the upset.

Team Quest up-and-comer Matt Horwich steps up to the plate on one week's notice as well. Bouncing off his win last week at Sportfight 5 (where the light-heavyweight took the bout on a record-breaking fifteen minutes notice!), the unflappable 4-1-1 Horwich will meet 5-2 Jerome LeBanner student Antony Rea.

Giving up the most weight to his foe tomorrow night, 6'6", 200-pound local fighter Ricardeau Francois will lock horns with 6'8", 250-pound Hammer House protégé Wes Sims, who has already added a bit of flare and entertainment value to the proceedings with his outgoing antics. With six years of training, Francois told FCF his specialties include freestyle wrestling and boxing. Francois says he has not seen any of Sims' fights, including his three televised appearances in the UFC, and despite the huge weight differential, felt it too unique of an opportunity to pass up. "It's going to be a challenge to actually fight somebody the same height," the quiet giant says. "I'm always the tallest guy fighting. I'm gonna destroy him."

Low Turn-Out Miss Out:
Apex Championship Fighting Packs A Punch

Menjivar lands a knee to Ackerman
Menjivar lands a knee to Ackerman
September 5, 2004: Apex Championship Fighting rolled out an entertaining mix of match-ups in its debut tonight from the Pierre Charbonneau Center in Montreal, Quebec. It's a shame that MMA fans missed out on the fun. Venue officials did not have a tally of ticket sales but a pooled media estimation had the turn-out somewhere between 600 to 800 spectators. Nonetheless, fighters came to fight, and delivered on their end in spades.

Highlights for the night included Team Quester Ryan Schultz's quick domination of Jason Dent with his plethora of endless short right hooks standing and on the ground. A former college wrestler under the watchful eye of Matt Lindland, Schultz will only get better as he continues his quick ascension in the ranks. Next stop: the Euphoria MFC event on October 15th in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
Matt Horwich def. Antony Rea via rear-naked choke.

TQ teammate Matt Horwich also impressed with the upset win over internationally-seasoned striker Antony Rea. Rea commanded the first round early on with solid kicks and punching combos, but as is Horwich's way, he weathered and ultimately secured the rear naked choke early in the second after getting full mount from a takedown. With this victory, light-heavyweight Horwich is on the map indeed.

Miletich Martial Arts rep Tony Fryklund did not disappoint in one of the featured bouts of the evening, even when last-minute replacement fighter Chris Myers gave it all he had to keep up with "the Freak's" legs kicks, knees, and power punches. Myers even managed to land a punch in one of a few heated exchanges that opened a cut out of the corner of Fryklund's right eye, but the consummate pro was never in any real trouble and voiced it by turning to the audience to gage their approval midfight. Although not entirely content with his performance, Fryklund's control throughout was an underlying theme. The referee missed Myers tap out, and Fryklund got the TKO referee stoppage from strikes in Myers' guard 4:25 in.

Francois sends Sims over the ropes
In the co-main event Wes Sims had a poor showing against light-heavyweight local Ricardeau Francois, who had taken the fight on a week's notice with a fifty pound differential. Francois seemed timid to Sims' persona at first, but quickly warmed up when he landed his first right punch to startle the 3-Time UFC veteran. Sims seemed fatigued early on, falling over the ropes in a clinching exchange, and was even slammed by Francois later in the round, but neither could get anything going on the ground. Re-stood by the referee, Francois began to gain momentum on his feet, although his punches did not pack enough power to finish the job. Sims finished the round on all fours, too spent to stand and return to his corner, with coach Mark Coleman screaming for him to stand. Opening up with a Francois spinning back kick in round two, Sims doubled-over and pushed along the ropes, where Francois finished with some follow-up uppercuts for the referee intervention. Although the elated Francois had his moment among the local fans hungry for the upset, it will be quite sometime before the lanky Canadian gets the opponent he called out for next: Chuck Liddell. It's nice to know that the UFC reaches the North though.

In the main event of 145 pounders, UFC vet Ivan Menjivar proved hands down why he belongs among the ranks of SHOOTO caliber fighters. A go getter through and through, Menjivar pulled out the stop on tough opponent Ryan Ackerman, landing the full gamut of punches, knees, and kicks accessible to a fighter. Ackerman hung in there and even rang Menjivar's bell once or twice, but the ultimate athlete prevailed in the end.

Buentello Out of UFC 50
By Joe Hall

Paul Buentello had waited seven years for a shot in the UFC. His anticipated debut was scheduled for October 22 at UFC 50, but now the Texas native will have to wait a little longer.

The heavyweight injured his right hand during training and will not be able to fight Tra Telligman in Atlantic City. While sparring with AKA teammate Bobby Southworth a couple weeks ago, Buentello threw a body shot that connected with Southworth's elbow. Buentello's fist made impact just between his ring finger and his pinky, resulting in a slight shock of pain. He finished out the round, not thinking much about it.

In the next round, though, a sharp stinging sensation accompanied each right hand that he landed. He took a day off before resuming training, but the hand began to swell. More time was taken to allow the swelling to subside, but it started again as soon as he began a light session on the mitts.

Although X-rays didn't reveal a fracture, Buentello was informed that he had bruised the tendons in his hand. He gave it one last shot in the gym, and the swelling quickly returned. He can grab with the hand, but he struggles to pull even car doors open. The doctor told him he needed to rest the hand for three to four weeks, meaning no punching, no grabbing, no lifting weights and no UFC.

Buentello had fractured his third metacarpal on the same hand in a fight last December. He figures his long layoff from sparring due to that injury may have rendered the hand somewhat weak leading into his intensified August training sessions.

"It just sucks," says Buentello, who had been doing cardio while waiting for the swelling to go down. "I wanted to prove to everybody that I belonged in there a long time ago."

Despite the injury, he's certain he'll make his debut soon. "From what it sounds like, it won't be too long," he says. "The UFC said my contract is still standing."

An official replacement to take on Telligman has not yet been named, though John Marsh is a rumored possibility.

Eastman Back in UFC 50
By Joe Hall

Preliminary lineups for UFC 50 that floated through the MMA community had Marvin Eastman on the card against Canadian Patrick Cote. Then, suddenly, Eastman's name was replaced by Ivan Salaverry.

Marvin Eastman "The Beastman" had indeed signed to compete in UFC 50, but was pulled from the card a few days later when the UFC was unsure whether he would be able to fight. The uncertainty stemmed from Eastman's involvement in a post-fight scuffle following an Aug. 7 K-1 bout in Las Vegas.

Eastman was stopped that night in the first round by Ray Sefo, but he felt his opponent had fought dirty by hitting him while he tried to touch gloves. Shortly after the match was stopped, a melee ensued in the ring, much to the Nevada State Athletic Commission's disapproval. Unsure of whether Eastman would be suspended and unable to fight at 50, the UFC pulled him from the card.

It was then Eastman realized the seriousness of his offense and the breadth of the Nevada Commission's jurisdiction. One post-fight altercation after a kickboxing match in Vegas and you can't kickbox, box or fight MMA anywhere in the country (or beyond) that's regulated. If you're suspended, that is. Eastman wasn't.

He went before the Commission and assured them he'd walk away if he found himself in a similar situation after a fight. They fined him $500 and gave him the rest of his purse, which they had been holding. "The Commission don't play around," says Eastman. "I accepted the fine, thanked them and told them have a nice day. I don't want to see them no more because it could have been 20-30% of my purse."

Ivan Salaverry had filled Eastman's vacancy to take on Cote in the light heavyweight bout. Earlier this week, however, Phil Baroni blew out the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his knee, leaving middleweight Trevor Prangley without an opponent. Immediately after the UFC heard that Eastman wasn't suspended, he says, they called his manager to see if he wanted back in. "I was like hell yeah," says Eastman. "I told you I wasn't going to get suspended."

Salaverry then moved into Baroni's spot and will face Trevor Prangley in a middleweight bout, and Eastman is now back on the card against his original opponent, Patrick Cote.

Eastman denies reports that he had been taken off the card due to a hand injury. "It was simply because they didn't know if I was going to get suspended," he says. "My mind is 100% clear. I'll be able to fight like a monster, like I normally fight."

Randleman Inducted into Ohio State Hall of Fame

Kevin Randleman LOS ANGELES, California – PRIDE FIGHTING super star Kevin "The Monster" Randleman has been inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame of his alma mater, Ohio State University. Based on his impressive accomplishments as an amateur wrestler for OSU, Randleman was voted in by the Ohio State Varsity "O" Association. The class of 2004 will be officially inducted on Friday, September 10th and then introduced to the public during halftime of the Marshall-Ohio State football game in Ohio Stadium on Saturday, September 11th. Since 1993 a total of 59 women have been inducted; 210 men have been honored since 1977.

The 2004 class includes 12 new members (eight men and four women) ranging in sports from swimming to football. Randleman's OSU career spanned from 1991 to 1993 and he enters the hall of fame as one of the finest amateur wrestlers in the history of the university. His accomplishments include: being a two-time national champion in the 177-pound weight class in 1992 and 1993 ... finishing second in the nation in 1991 ... first two-time national champion in the history of Ohio State wrestling ... three-time All-American (1991, 1992, 1993) ... Ohio State's first three-time Big Ten champion ... three-time All-Big Ten selection ... finished the 1992 season with a record of 42-0-3, becoming the second Buckeye to record an undefeated season.

As a member of Mark Coleman's "Hammer House" team, Randleman translated this success as a wrestler into a career in mixed martial arts. His first MMA match was in 1996 and he later joined PRIDE FC in 2002. In 2004 he was invited to compete in PRIDE FC's prestigious heavyweight Grand Prix. Though he did not win the tournament, his knockout of Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic during the first round remains as one of the lasting images of the competition as well as one of the greatest MMA highlights in recent years.

Cagewarriors 8: Brutal Force
Saturday 18th September
The Octagon Centre
Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TQ, UK
Doors Open 6pm – Event Starts 7pm

The 8th edition of the Cagewarriors Fighting Championships is a nearly a week away and is headlined by an explosive main event as Gerald "The Finishing Machine" Strebendt and Paul "Semtex" Daley collide in the welterweight division in a classic striker vs. grappler clash. This 8 bout card also includes 2 title fights as Tengiz Tedoradze the CWFC Heavyweight Champion aims to extend his unbeaten streak to 10 straight wins, against the stocky but powerful Craig Amer. Tengiz is a former Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion, who was originally from the ex-Soviet State of Georgia. However Tengiz now resides in Yorkshire, England and will have a lot of home support in this titanic title match. Tengiz recently crushed the undefeated British prospect James Thompson with an awesome display of Ground and Pound which shocked many observers. But can he do it again against Craig Amer who is a 1 punch knockout specialist whose victories have all come in the very first round by KO.

The other title fight on the card is a rematch between Paul McVeigh and Chin Weerasinghe for the CWFC Bantamweight Title. Once again the CWFC breaks the mould by being the first UK MMA promotion to have a legitimate and professional under 61.2 Kilo/135lbs Bantamweight division.

In their previous encounter for the CWFC Featherweight Title at Cagewarriors 3 in March 2003, McVeigh got a close decision win over Weerasinghe who knocked McVeigh down within the opening 30 seconds of the bout and showed superior stand-up throughout. However Weerasinghe was slowly outworked by the superior groundwork of the young Irish prodigy who is trained by the Irish BJJ purple belt John Kavanagh. Now 18 months on, Weerasinghe is pumped, ready and has even dropped out of other fights in order to avenge what he saw as a controversial defeat by McVeigh back in March 2003.

Also featuring on this card is the active UK veteran Paul Jenkins, who will be fighting in his 6th MMA contest in 2 months, the up and coming Ian Jones, who destroyed tough Paratrooper Sandy Geddas at Cagewarriors 6 with a devastating display of Muay Thai striking. And there will also be a Cage Kickboxing bout featuring Dan Hardy who trains alongside Paul Daley at the Roughhouse Gym in Nottingham, and recently beat Paul Jenkins in the Main Event of FCFN 2. Watch this space for more in-depth previews in the next week
Fight Card

Blind (Up)Date:
Flirtatious Fighters Nab Coveted November Sweeps Week
By Loretta Hunt

Is M-M-A fast becoming America's latest F-A-D? It would appear so with all the added attention the fledging sport has been getting via the small screen.

In recent months, mixed martial arts hopeful Josh Hayes was featured on the hit MTV series "True Life" training and then competing in his first pro fight in the WEC. On a separate episode, cameras followed Muay Thai and part-time MMA fighter Kit Cope to Thailand for his "true life" experience. Let's not forget "The Ultimate Fighter," the UFC's reality show set to premiere this January on Spike TV.

Next on that growing list, reality dating show "Blind Date" has also jumped onboard for some MMA-centric programming. The long running series, which pairs strangers together through a host of engaging activities in the hopes of catching a love connection (or repulsion) on air, shot five separate episodes with Ultimate Fighters Tim Sylvia, Wes Sims, Josh Thomson, Pete Spratt, and Tiki Ghosn last July in Las Vegas.

Apparently, higher-ups have been so pleased with the episodes as they've been edited that "Blind Date" executive producers, in correlation with NBC/Universal officials, have decided to air them during TV's coveted "sweeps week," set for November 15th through 19th.

"The UFC is obviously very hot these days, so we're taking advantage of that through sweeps week," says "Date" producer John Pepper. "We definitely save the best for that slot. That's when the most viewers, the most eyes will be looking at Blind Date, so we wanted to save our absolute best for it."

"Date" reps were especially impressed with heavyweight Wes Sims' encounter with his date, described as a young woman who was quite nonplussed by the 6'8" giant's antics and chosen profession. It's reported that Sims' time went so rocky, that the outgoing fighter ended up at a Vegas strip joint by night's end, his defiant date in tow.

Blind Date has enlisted "specialty" contestants before for themed weeks, from Tropicana showgirls to WWE characters. This will be their first collaboration with UFC fighters.

Cage Rage 8 – Knights of the Octagon
Held Sept. 11, 2004 - Wembley, London, UK
Results By David West

Hometown hero Lee Murray brought his legion of fans to the Wembley Conference Centre to see him square up to Pride veteran Anderson Silva in the biggest test of the Briton's career. Murray's fans went home unhappy after Silva proved too slick for their hero, comprehensively out-boxing him with sharp punches and some dazzling kicks for three rounds. Mark Weir made short work of Luta Livre fighter Johil De Oliveira and at the end of the evening challenged Anderson Silva for the Cage Rage Middleweight Title. In other titles fights, Peter Tiarks retained his Featherweight Title by tapping out Ian Butlin, while the vacant Heavyweight Crown was claimed by Ryan Robinson when the tall and lanky Carlson Gracie student ground and pounded Kuljit Degun into submission. LAS VEGAS, NEV., September 14, 2004....There's going to be a war Friday, Oct. 22, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ, when top contending light heavyweights Tito Ortiz and Guy Mezger renew a long-standing feud and former welterweight champion Matt Hughes battles Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight championship at Ultimate Fighting Championshipâ 50: War Of 04. Six additional fights will complete the all-star, eight-fight card that will be available LIVE on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EDT, on iNDemand, DirecTV, Dish Network, Echostar, Bell ExpressVu and Viewers Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $29.95.

For Ortiz (11-4-0 in mixed martial arts) from Huntington Beach, Calif., the former UFC light heavyweight champion, and Mezger (44-13-6) from Dallas, TX, their main event battle will be the continuation of a war that began May 30, 1997, at UFC 13: The Ultimate Force, resumed March 5, 1999, at UFC 19: Young Guns and eventually led to one of the biggest fights in UFC history, Ortiz' match up with Mezger's mentor Ken Shamrock November 22, 2002, at UFC 40: Vendetta.

Both own a victory. Mezger in the first fight by guillotine choke amid wild controversy when Ortiz thought Mezger had tapped out, and Ortiz by massive punches in a revenge-filled re-match that included post-fight antics and a T-shirt message that had Shamrock attempting to jump over the Octagon to get at Ortiz while vowing "I'll never retire from the UFC until I fight him." That became reality in the main event of UFC 40 when Ortiz, then the UFC light heavyweight champion, was victorious by technical knockout after three rounds. Now, the stage is set to settle the score with Mezger. And yes, Shamrock will be in his corner again. Ortiz needs a victory to get back in the light heavyweight title chase and Mezger would definitely improve his rank in the division with a win.

"Tito is a tremendous athlete with more experience now. He will be favored. But, I am a warrior and have beaten many favored fighters in the past because I always figure out a way to win. I really expect this to be the UFC's best fight of the year," Mezger said.

Ortiz advises that Mezger had better be in shape. "This fight will not go the distance. It's going to be punishment and I plan to stop him once and for all," he said.

The battle lines are clearly drawn for the Hughes-St. Pierre welterweight title fight. Hughes (37-4-0) from Hillsboro, Ill., was the UFC welterweight champion until he tried a reversal move in the first round at UFC 46: Super Natural and was caught in a rear naked choke by BJ Penn. He lost his belt, but rebounded with a dominating three-round unanimous decision over Renato Verissimo at UFC 48: Pay Back! Hughes is one of the strongest pound-for-pound fighters in MMA who is renown for his wrestling skills and ability to slam opponents and deal out brutal damage on the ground. He is driven to re-gain the title and prove he is one of the best welterweights in the world. But St. Pierre (7-0-0) from Montreal, Canada, is the undefeated Canadian welterweight champion who is equally dangerous standing or on the ground. He impressed everyone in his debut at UFC 46 with a unanimous decision over judo expert Karo Parisyan followed by a first-round knockout of Jay Hieron at UFC 48.

Hughes knows that St. Pierre is talented. "But, it's too soon for him to be taking me on," he said.

"He doesn't know what's coming. This is my time," St. Pierre counters.

Three middleweight matches, a welterweight bout, a light heavyweight match and a heavyweight fight will complete the card.

With two of the UFC's most talented young fighters moving to middleweight, the division now rivals the light heavyweights for competitive action.

"Ruthless" Robbie Lawler (8-2-0) from Davenport, Iowa, who introduced his explosive knockout power as a welterweight, moves up to face veteran Evan Tanner (31-4-0) from Gresham, Ore. Lawler quickly established a reputation as one of MMA's most dangerous strikers with impressive wins over Aaron Riley, Steve Berger, Tiki and Chris Lytle, the last three by KO. Just 22, Lawler is still developing and now makes his debut as a middleweight. Tanner, a member of UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Randy Couture's Team Quest Fight Club, reeled off six victories as a light heavyweight before he dropped down to middleweight and continued his win streak with two consecutive victories over highly regarded Phil Baroni. Tanner makes no bones about the fact he wants to be the UFC's next middleweight champion.

Another middleweight newcomer will be powerful Rich Franklin (17-1-0) from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is moving down from light heavyweight to face one of the UFC's best all-around fighters, Jorge Rivera (9-2-0) from Milford, Mass. Franklin, an outstanding striker with excellent submission skills, won his last two UFC fights by TKO in the first round as a light heavyweight. He pummeled Tanner at UFC 42: Sudden Impact in Miami, Fla., and then defeated Edwin DeWees in just 3:35 at UFC 44: Undisputed in Las Vegas. He will be formidable as a middleweight. But Rivera is a hardnosed striker who likes to move forward and keep the pressure on opponents. While striking is his strength, he has all the tools to become a top middleweight contender. Rivera made an impressive debut at UFC 44 with a unanimous decision win over tough Canadian David Loiseau.

The card's third middleweight match will pit grappler Trevor Prangley (8-1-0) from Couer D'Alene, Idaho, against Ivan Salaverry (8-3-1) from Seattle, Wash. Prangley, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, is a world-class grappler, but is not afraid to stand and strike with opponents. In his last UFC appearance, he defeated Curtis Stout at UFC 48: Payback! with a neck crank at the 3:51 mark of round two. Salaverry is strong on the ground or standing up. He defeated Andrei Semenov by TKO at UFC 37: High Impact.

The welterweight bout will have an East Coast flavor because Frank Trigg (11-2-0) grew up in Rochester, N.Y., although he now lives and fights out of El Segundo, Calif. His opponent, "Charuto" Verissimo (5-1-0) is from Hilo, Hawaii. Trigg is world-class wrestler who is always in top condition and he has added striking and submission skills to complement that wrestling ability. In his last UFC fight, he defeated wily veteran Dennis Hallman by first-round TKO with strikes on the ground at UFC 48. Verissimo is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who made an impressive debut at UFC 46: Super Natural in January with a unanimous decision victory over former welterweight champ Carlos Newton. In his next match, he nearly submitted Hughes at UFC 48 before losing a close decision. Also of note is the fact Verissimo trained and coached Penn when he defeated Hughes for the welterweight title.

In the light heavyweight prelim match, Canadian Patrick Cote (5-0-0) from Rimouski, Quebec, will make his UFC debut against talented Marvin Eastman (7-3-0) from Las Vegas, Nev. Cote holds the TKO Canadian Light Heavyweight championship and is a power puncher who has knocked out some of Canada's toughest fighters. His TKO belt will not be on the line in this fight. Eastman has an extensive wrestling background and is a quick striker who never backs down. In his UFC debut, he stepped up at UFC 43: Meltdown and took on former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort. Although Belfort won the fight en route to winning the title, Eastman gave him all he could handle.

No fight card is complete without a heavyweight bout and UFC 50: War Of 04 will not disappoint fans when John Marsh (12-4-0) from Redondo Beach, Calif., makes his UFC debut against veteran Tra Telligman (15-4-1) from Ft. Worth, Tex. Telligman, one of the best strikers in the heavyweight division, has fought some of the best fighters in MMA and is renown for two incredible wars with Pedro Rizzo. Telligman is not afraid to throw down with anyone and feels it is time to establish him self as one of the top UFC heavyweights. Marsh is a very aggressive heavyweight who has excellent submission and striking skills. His biggest weapon is a powerful right hand and he said although Telligman is experienced, "he will make a mistake and I will take advantage of it."

From K-1:
K-1 "Best Bouts" Premieres On Pay-Per-View September 26th

K-1 will showcase a collection of the most memorable ring wars that have occurred over the course of its 12-year existence during a three-hour Pay-Per-View television broadcast beginning at 8 PM Eastern Standard Time (5 PM Pacific Standard Time) on Sunday, September 26th. InDemand, DirecTV, and TVN will all carry the special television event.

"Best Bouts" will include contests that took place between competitors in the sport's Superheavyweight (200 pounds and above) division between 1993 and the first eight months of 2004. Fights featuring legendary champions Ernesto Hoost, Peter Aerts, and Andy Hug as well as superstars Jerome LeBanner, Ray Sefo, Remy Bonjasky, and Alexey Ignashov will be shown. The matchups that will air are expected to be announced over the course of the next three weeks.

The program is a rare opportunity for fans in The United States to take in a series of historical bouts that were staged during previously non-televised K-1 events overseas.

The "Best Bouts" television broadcast will mark K-1's third United States Pay-Per-View endeavor of this year. On December 4th, the sport will return to pay television and present the "World Grand Prix Finals" year-end finale live from Tokyo, Japan's Tokyo Dome.

K-1 is a martial arts fighting sport that derives its name from its inclusion of a wide array of combat disciplines, including Karate, Kung-Fu, and Kickboxing ("K"), and its intent to determine one champion in one ring ("1"). After being staged for the first time in Japan in 1993 under the direction of founder Master Kazuyoshi Ishii, it later evolved into the country's most popular sport and achieved popular culture status there as its athletes turned into larger-than-life celebrities.

From the event's promoter:
Cagewarriors 8: Brutal Force
Saturday 18th September
The Octagon Centre
Western Bank, Sheffield, S10 2TQ, UK
Doors Open 6pm – Event Starts 7pm

Again due to circumstances beyond our control the Cagewarriors 8 card has undergone two last minute changes.

Andy Melia (Who has 10 years experience in kickboxing and is a veteran of "Pride and Glory 1" and of the "Goshin Ryu" MMA Championships" in the North East of England) replaces the injured Lee Doski. Melia now takes on the vastly experienced Paul Jenkins, who will be eager to fight after due to his opponent pulling out at the last minute in London this past Saturday.

Also Chris Rice (Who won by corner stoppage against David Brown at "UK Storm" in the Midlands on the 4th September and holds a win at "Grapple and Strike 7 against the extremely talented submission specialist, Denis Kelly from the Carlson Gracie Team in London) steps up to take on Ian Jones. Jones made his debut at Cagewarriors 6 in style by dismantling tough paratrooper Sandy Geddes in an awesome display of Muay Thai which sent the crowd wild and left UK MMA observers wanting more.

Both these fights should be stand-up wars featuring local fighters which will entertain the crowd at the Octagon Centre in Sheffield, this September 18th.

Also don't forget the main event which features an international superfight between the UFC Veteran Gerald "The Finishing Machine" Strebendt and the up and coming UK star Paul "Semtex" Daley. Strebendt will have his mentor Eddie Bravo in his corner he tries to break Daley's unbeaten record in 2004, which has seen 7 wins in MMA and Kickboxing competitions.

The CWFC Heavyweight Championship is also on the line as the defending champion Tengiz Tedoradze looks to extend his scintillating form to 10 straight wins, when he takes on the 1 punch knockout specialist Craig Amer. Finally the 1st CWFC Bantamweight Title is up for grabs as Paul McVeigh and Chin Weerasinghe battle it out in a re-match of their Cagewarriors 3 classic, which saw McVeigh narrowly take the CWFC Featherweight title home on points. This time they have dropped a weight class, but will be turning up the heat as both men feel they have a point to prove.

We also have other surprises lined up for fans that cannot make it to Cagewarriors 8. As due to the ongoing demand for accurate and in-depth play by play analysis, we will be conducting a direct play by play service with pictures via a laptop at ringside. This will mean more in-depth information being relayed to fans back home, along with pictures to give some insight into what happened in each fight.

This further underlines our intentions of being the innovators of the UK MMA scene and also responds to the feedback we received from our last major play by play coverage at Cage Rage 8, which was via sms text message.

Also Eddie "The Twister" Bravo will be coming to Cagewarriors 8, direct from his Seminar at the CWFC fight Team HQ. Eddie will be in the corner of Gerald Strebendt when he takes on Paul Daley in our main event.

For Ticket and Travel information on this great event go to http://www.cagewarriors.com/cw8ticket.asp or contact the ticket hotline +44(0)7881 552525. The CWFC will also debut its brand new 32ft octagon at this event and has actor & director Lyndsay Honey aka "Ben Dover" as the celebrity guest MC at Cagewarriors 8.

The Brazilian Beat
Belfort rumors looking solid, Wanderlei ready to surprise, Ninja busy and ready, even more new shows in Brazil and more!

The Brazilian Beat:
When I wrote an article about "Free Agency" in MMA that was featured in FCF a few issues back, I was getting the feeling that our sport was truly changing forever, and fighter-team relationships were going to be more and more a business from now on, than ever before. Now, as we're past the middle of September, this seems absolutely true as things are gradually leading for a Vitor Belfort comeback to the Brazilian Top Team, showing the new professional colors of our sport and also showing that maybe it's time for this reporter to write a new article on the same subject. With Vitor speaking to the press on his problems with his team while preparing for his last bout against Randy Couture, and the obvious benefits that a well-organized team such as BTT can bring to his game, this comes as no surprise and will likely give the fans an even more prepared "Phenom" for the coming bouts. However, there's much more going on in the Brazilian scene, with plenty of activity at international shows for camps such as Chute Boxe and Brazilian Top Team, new shows continuing to appear in the country, some veterans coming back to action and even MMA stars getting married! So, with the Brazilian Beat being away for some time now and returning to action, we better not hold you anymore with any intro texts and take you straight to the news, as FCF always comes back to provide a good old Beat straight from Brazil, enjoy!
  • Rumors regarding Vitor Belfort's comeback to the Brazilian Top Team are real, as Vitor is reported to be negotiating the very last details of his new contract with his former team, and may announce his comeback at any time now. As always, things can change this game at any minute, but at this point things are really very close to be solved, so "The Phenom" will fight Tito Ortiz as a Brazilian Top Team member. FCF will keep an eye on the developments.

  • Speaking of the Brazilian Top Team, Ricardo Arona will likely be making his return to the Pride ring after his loss to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at the 31st of October Pride show. Although no opponent has been named yet, and his participation isn't official so far, this is considered a sure thing at the BTT headquarters and Arona is already training hard and preparing to show he is still a force at the middleweight division in Pride.

UFC Heavyweight Champion Mir Suffers Broken Femur in Motorcycle Accident;
Speaks From Hospital Bed

By Loretta Hunt

Frank Mir Saturday, Sept. 18 - You can't say that UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is not tough. The talented fighter, who armbarred his way to the title last June, was struck by a car two days ago while riding his motorcycle and will live to tell about it.

From his bedside at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Mir's fiancée Jennifer spoke with FCF this afternoon, recounting the events that took place early Thursday night as Frank left his house and traveled to work on his bike.

According to Jennifer, Mir was traveling along Sahara Avenue when a car coming in the opposite direction did not heed a left yield light, turning and colliding with the UFC heavyweight champion. On impact, Mir was thrown an estimated 75 feet from his bike, tumbling quickly from the concrete onto shoulder-side grass, just three feet from a lamppost. Mir was wearing a helmet at the time. Amazingly, the 6'1" fighter reportedly remained conscious during the whole ordeal, and can recall the entire scenario.

"I don't like losing consciousness," a groggy but grateful Mir spoke briefly from his hospital bed. "I gotta stay awake the whole time. That's how I got so good at jiu-jitsu-- I don't like being choked out."

Mir's brother was riding alongside him at the time of the collision and called his fiancée, who rushed to the site with their two children, but eventually rendezvoused with him at the hospital. There, physicians reported no internal bleeding, and prepped the 265-pound plus patient for surgery.

Mir went into surgery Friday for his leg and foot, where physicians reset a described "clean break" in his left femur (or thigh bone) and placed a titanium rod through it. The procedure did not require casting of any kind.

"The surgery was successful," reports a relieved Jennifer, even though the process took four hours (two and a half more than expected) due to the sheer size of Mir's appendage. "The doctor expects a 99% recovery. He said that actually his bone will be even stronger. They said eight to ten weeks. The doctors said, mind you, that's an average person. Frank will probably heal even faster, but eight to ten weeks and he'll be walking again."

"The doctor told me I could put all my weight on it right now," added the sidelined fighter himself, who was up and out of his hospital bed this morning for a short while. "It's just the muscles and the pain. The only reason I can't walk right now is because it's stiff and sore."

"They were gonna release him today, but he's running a slight fever," explains Jennifer, who was reassured by hospital staff that this is a routine occurrence after this type of surgery. "He'll probably go home tomorrow or Monday. He's not even taking all of his pain medication. He's doing really well."

That the accomplished fighter was hit by a smaller, compact car and wearing a helmet (which is now embedded with cement shards in the back), seemed to have been saving graces for his cause. Physicians also speculated that Frank's size, athleticism, and exemplary health all had a positive hand in his lucky outcome. "The motorcycle, where his leg was, the whole gas tank, that whole side is just dented in," says Jennifer. "His leg was right between the bike and the car." The suit Mir was wearing for his security position at a local nightclub that night was "absolutely tattered to shreds", she adds.

The Mir family has confirmed that Frank will not be fighting on December's UFC 51 card as was speculated earlier, but will be able enough to make his anticipated walk down the altar for his wedding scheduled in a little over a week's time. On crutches for the next few days, doctors are predicting Mir might even be able to sport a cane for his nuptials. Mir hopes to defend his UFC title as early as February or March.

Loiseau Determined to Steamroll Stout,
Fight Way Back into UFC

By Joe Hall

Is there room for one more in the suddenly talent-crowded UFC middleweight class? David Loiseau hopes so.

David Loiseau Since its inception in September 2001, the short history of the UFC middleweight division reads like a newsbrief about a runner that stumbled at the starting line and crashed down nose-first into the track. It's been over two years since anyone wore the 185-pound title into or out of the octagon, and the belt has been officially vacant longer than anyone actually held it.

Random matches over the last couple of years allowed UFC middleweights to make deserved paydays but failed miserably to clear the muddled title picture created by Murilo Bustamante's exit. Now, though, it appears that the UFC has decided to pick itself up from the track, ignore the ugly scab on its nose and the confusion in its head, and start running in the right direction again.

They've infused 185-pound class with a wealth of potential and continue to do so leading up to UFC 50 next month. Fresh faces like Terrell, Prangley and Riggs join names like Tanner, Lindland, Franklin, Murray, Baroni, Salaverry, Lawler and Rivera to comprise a weight class now teeming with talent and poised to become the strongest division in the UFC.

But what about the best middleweight in Canada? "I'd like to get back in the UFC as soon as possible," says David Loiseau. "Cause I believe that's where I belong."

Belfort to Finally Re-join BTT Next Week!
By Eduardo Alonso

After around four UFC fights sort of on his own, Vitor Belfort will finally returning to his old home, the Brazilian Top Team. Unless something very unlikely and unexpected happens, "The Phenom" is expected to be back at the BTT headquarters in the city of Rio de Janeiro this coming Monday or Tuesday, to start training with his old team right away in his preparation for a likely bout against Tito Ortiz at UFC Japan in December.

Belfort is reported to be taking care of some personal issues in his current hometown of Sao Paulo, to then be able to move back to his birthplace of Rio de Janeiro and his old team. This comes at a very interesting point in Vitor's career, as he voiced distain with some problems in his training camp for his last bout against Randy Couture, saying that some of his trainers created a tough working environment and that led to a below average performance in the fight. Soon after this defeat, rumors were running strong about the former UFC champion returning to the Brazilian Top Team, with Belfort doing sporadic training sessions with both Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira and Carlos Barreto, and what happened in the last few weeks were much needed negotiations between the fighter himself and the team, since it's well known that the reason for Vitor's original departure from BTT was caused by some money issues.

"The Phenom" still has some friends at his "old house" and this move may benefit his career in plenty of aspects, as he will be able to stay closer to his mother during this tough period of their lives, with his sister still missing, and needless to stay will have awesome training partners and coaches. FCF will keep an eye on the developments of Belfort's new phase in his career.

Midwest up-and-comers seek upsets at Extreme Challenge 59

MEDINA, Minn. -- Promising young fighters Eddie Sanchez and Josh Hendricks are hoping to make a name for themselves at Extreme Challenge 59 this Friday at the Medina Entertainment Center.
To accomplish their goal, they will have to beat two fighters who already have "name" recognition in former UFC middleweight champion Dave Menne and UFC veteran Travis Wiuff.
"It's very difficult to find young fighters who want to challenge themselves by taking on the top guys in the sport," said EC promoter Monte Cox. "But we had a couple of guys jump at the chance for this show."
Travis Wiuff.Dave Menne.

Sanchez, from Michigan, will bring a 6-3 record into his fight with Menne, one of the sport's legends with a 34-10 record. Hendricks, from Ohio, takes a 5-2 mark against Wiuff, who is 30-4 overall and has won 15 straight fights and 19 out of 20 since losing to Vladimir Matyushenko in the UFC.

Ortiz doing two-a-days in Vegas with Couture; Hughes taking St. Pierre seriously; Lawler at 195
By Joe Hall

Tito Ortiz recently arrived in Las Vegas to complete the final four weeks of his UFC 50 training camp. The former light heavyweight champion had been training in Huntington Beach with Team Oyama and at the No Limit gym in Irvine, California, before traveling to Nevada.

"I'm just trying to focus myself by coming out to Vegas," Ortiz said over the phone Tuesday night. "I couldn't really focus at home."

Already in Sin City was current UFC light heavyweight champion Randy Couture. "I came out to Vegas because Randy Couture's out here," said Ortiz, who added that he's had problems finding training partners in the past. Ricco Rodriguez, Dean Lister, John Lewis and Muay Thai coach Master Toddy are currently helping him prepare in Nevada.

Ortiz is training twice a day with Couture and company and then lifts and blasts through a cardio routine at night. If you can't beat them, then learn from them is the credo governing Ortiz's training with Couture. He followed the same philosophy after Frank Shamrock stopped him at UFC 22. Shamrock's superior conditioning prevailed that night, and Ortiz learned later the mechanics of never-ending cardio from the man himself.

He figures he can now learn the finer details of superior wrestling from the man who took him down five times at UFC 44. "I think I've learned a lot from (Couture) so far, and he's learned something from me too," Ortiz said. "He's a person I look up to, and I really respect him as a man and as a fighter. And I don't really respect many fighters."

Couture won't be with Ortiz throughout the camp, though, due to his obligations with the UFC reality television show. The training sessions are a returned favor after Ortiz helped Couture prepare for his match against Belfort last month, Ortiz said.

Ortiz remains on good terms with Team Oyama and said that he will continue training with them in the future.

ORTIZ VS. BELFORT?

UFC President Dana White has stated on record that regardless of whether Ortiz defeats Guy Mezger on Oct. 22, "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" will face Vitor Belfort in Japan on Dec. 12.

Speculation has centered on whether Ortiz will fight on such short rest, however, and whether it's wise to plan a show around a fighter who could easily be injured and unable to compete. At this point, Ortiz is essentially saying cross your fingers.

"I've already pretty much verbally agreed to fight Belfort," he said. "It's just a matter of it happening and us fighting in Japan. Hopefully I don't get injured during the fight with Guy or before the fight while training. It's just a matter of everything going smooth, how it's supposed to be, and you'll see Tito Ortiz versus Vitor Belfort on December 12 in Japan."

Maybe, maybe not.

QUICK UPDATE ON UFC 50 COMPETITORS UFC 50 poster
  • Known for not always training hard, Matt Hughes said Tuesday that he's "training like (opponent Georges St. Pierre) is the world champion." If Hughes weren't training hard, though, he probably wouldn't admit it. Not until after the fight anyway.

  • Asked how his training is going, Georges St. Pierre replied "Oh my god." The Canadian said he began training in July and will have put in nearly four months of strict dieting and preparation by the time he walks into the cage for his welterweight title fight against Hughes. "I swear, you're going to understand when you see me," he said. "I'm going to be a new Georges St. Pierre."

  • Robbie Lawler, who is moving up from the welterweight class (170) to fight as a middleweight (185), was walking at about 195 pounds as of Wednesday afternoon. His punches will pack even more power at 185, he said.

  • Trevor Prangley leaves his home in Idaho on Monday to travel to San Diego with his friend, UFC veteran Josh Thomson. They'll spend a week there training with Ken Shamrock, Guy Mezger and company before moving up to San Jose, where Prangley will finish out his training camp with Crazy Bob Cook, Javier Mendez and Dave Camarillo at AKA.

  • Prangley's opponent, Ivan Salaverry, is not preparing under Matt Hume at AMC Pankration in Washington. He's actually in California training Bob Sapp, who's currently working on the movie, The Longest Yard, a remake of the 1974 football flick that starred Burt Reynolds. Salaverry will spend his entire training camp in California and has been preparing with Maurice Smith, Josh Barnett, ground technician Eddie Bravo, and Frank Trigg and company at the R-1 gym in Los Angeles.

  • Jorge Rivera has not yet began training at maximum intensity, but says he will shortly. "I don't want to peak too early, so I haven't gone full tilt yet, but I'm getting there," he said. "I'm feeling good right now. I feel strong; I feel good." The middleweight was walking at about 202 pounds as of Wednesday afternoon. He was confident his bout against Rich Franklin would take place, and end, on the feet.

  • UFC newcomer Patrick Cote likes his chances on the feet against K-1 veteran Marvin Eastman. In fact, he doesn't think Eastman will stand with him and won't be able to handle the Canadian's hand speed if he does. "I'm not sure he wants to trade with me," Cote said. "But if he wants to do that, don't worry. I'm not worried about that."

  • "If (Cote) wants to go toe-to-toe, I'll gladly oblige him," replied Marvin Eastman. "We can lace 'em up and see what happens.... I don't talk smack. I let the opponent talk smack. I just go in there and do what I have to do because an ass whoopin' humbles anybody."

  • Tra Telligman had the dangerous tone of a fighter with nothing to lose when he was reached Wednesday. "I don't even care anymore," he said. "I'm just having fun. I love to fight. I'm out to have a good time.... If I win a couple fights, maybe (the UFC) will give me a shot at something. Maybe not. Who knows? But right now, I don't even care. Literally, I like to fight. It makes my heart beat; it makes me feel like I'm living."

Reality Combat Hits Mississippi
By Loretta Hunt

60-year-old Skip Hall puts the squeeze on promoter Rich Clementi
Hall puts the squeeze on promoter Rich Clementi
Down a stretch of vacant highway, a cluster of casinos all within walking distance of the other beckon the wide-eyed driver with a fluorescent tapestry that lights up the black Mississippi sky. This is Tunica, a community that was said to have once been in economical disarray, until these beacons of chance sprung up, luring throngs of fortune seekers from local Memphis, Tennessee and beyond to its doorstep.

It's also where Reality Combat will host its 23rd event tomorrow night from Sam's Town Casino. Catering to the Gulf Coast area of Louisiana, this event will be promoters Rich Clementi and Jim Cunningham's inaugural engagement in the area. Hosting a mix of local professionals and amateurs hailing from Arkansas to Tennessee, "Duel in the Delta," will look to draw a crowd of 1,000 spectators.

In the main event, UFC veteran and pro boxer LaVerne Clark looks to get his name back into the welterweight picture following a sporadic record and a recent spell of inactivity. He'll face promising up-and-comer Melvin Guillard, whose furious fists have garnered him a loyal local following. "This is the new LaVerne Clark," the seasoned fighter said tonight from the official weigh-ins. "I'm changing a lot of things that I was doing before and things that I wasn't doing, I'm doing the right things now." Currently training with Jason Reinhardt and company in Illinois, Clark says he's getting the inspiration he has long needed to get back into regular training for competition.

Main event: Melvin Guillard vs. LaVerne Clark
Opponent Melvin "The Young Assassin" Guillard seemed unimpressed by Clark's notoriety. "He hasn't fought anybody," the younger fighter said of Clark's past opponents, who have included Frank Trigg and Fabiano Iha. "Everybody's telling me he's as good as he is. You really don't know that till you fight somebody. I have nothing to prove. I'm just going to go out there and fight my fight and come home with the victory."

Heavyweights Matt Thomas and Patrick Lachney
Heavyweights Matt Thomas & Patrick Lachney
Also on the card, heavyweights Matt Thomas and Patrick Lachney are hoping to impress in a bid to quench a heavyweight draught currently sweeping the nation. Thomas is 9-0 in amateur action, while Lachney has seen a comparable amount of play as well, and currently trains under Clementi and others in the Louisiana area.

Although 25 pounds separates fighters Fred Grishwald and Will Hymer, a little healthy animosity has spurned one of two rematches to grace the RC card. Both fighters are willing to overlook the formality for a chance to settle a score. Without an athletic commission to oversea the proceedings (Mississippi remains one of numerous States still weighing the MMA issue), promoter Clementi was left to decide if these two should meet again.

Possibly the most mature mixed martial artist still competing, 60-year-old Skip Hall will look to improve his record to 5-3 tomorrow evening. He faces Anthony Barbier, absent from tonight's weigh-ins, but expected to join the group tomorrow.

Sean Sherk shooting on Brody Farber
SportFight Results
By Keith Mills

Reno, NV -- It was a night of occurrences many fans probably thought they wouldn't see individually let alone all on one card as Matt Lindland brought his show SportFight to Reno. Headlining the evening Jeremy Horn was back in the Light Heavyweight division after concentrating on Middleweight lately as he won a rematch against Chael Sonnen on short notice. Dennis Hallman was set to move up to Middleweight from his most successful Welterweight segment of his career as he defeated Mike Seal although Hallman's announced weigh-in weight was actually 193. Sean Sherk was the most famous fighter on the card that fought at their famous weight although this would be strange to most fans as this was actually the "new" Sean Sherk, bent of demonstrating his submission skills and avoiding ground and pound. You read that right, Sherk avoiding ground and pound in favor of submissions to show the world he is more exciting since the loss to Hughes and not just a 35-1-1 fighter ranked between #3 and 5 on most polls. Add in a Team Cesar Gracie fighter that prefers to box, a Heavyweight fighter giving up 45 pounds and managing to get a 0:15 KO, and an opening fight with one fighter cornered by John Hackleman and the other by Mike Kyle and you have a strange but very entertaining night.

There were two minor downsides to this night of action. No fights going to a decision is usually preferable but most of these fights were over so early the total length of ring time was around 22 minutes. The other low point of the night was post Horn/Sonnen. First Chael Sonnen insulted Jeremy Horn immediately after Horn submitted Sonnen and before the ref could raise Horn's hand. With a look on his face that made some present ringside wonder if the fight was about to continue Chael was heard to say Jeremy got lucky and he'd beat Horn any day of the week. Horn blew Sonnen off but when given the mike to speak got his own shot in by saying Sonnen 'hits like a girl.' For what otherwise would definitely been the fight of the night this was an embarrassing ending, as if it is still not over.

SportFight returns in Oregon in November.

European Vale Tudo "Gladiators" only two days away!

This Sunday will see 20 international fighters enter the cage in Solnahallen, Stockholm to battle it out in the toughest form of contest known to man ? Vale Tudo. In the main bout, Brazilian Top Team's Allan Goes will face Pierre Guillet of Tsunami Gym, UK. There is still time to buy tickets at Budo & Fitness Stockholm and on Fighter Centre Stockholm.

This is the second event of its kind held in Sweden. It is fighting sports taken to the extreme - two fighters go head to head in a cage of steel. Almost anything goes, including punches and kicks to an opponent on the ground. The fights consist of three five minute rounds and are stopped if one fighter is knocked-out, taps out or by the referee.

The fight card of this, the fourth event arranged by the European Vale Tudo organization, is an impressive read. Some fighters are new to EVT and some have become familiar to the EVT-audience, but all are at the top of their game.

The fight card

Match 1, -70 kg Lightweight
Sebastian Korschilgen, OC Fight Team (Germany) Vs.
Robbie Olivier, Tsunami Gym (UK)
*new fight with new fighters*

Robbie Olivier usually spends eight weeks preparing for a fight like this. Still, he accepted the offer to fight in EVT 4 "Gladiators" with only one weeks notice, because "I just love to fight". Robbie Olivier has a record of 8-5-1 and is the more experienced of the two fighters.

Match 2, -77 kg Welterweight
Tim Vinther, Advanced Gym Copenhagen (Denmark) Vs.
Diego Gonzales, Pancrase Gym (Sweden)

At 20, Diego Gonzales has time on his side to reach his full potential, something he feels he was not able to do in his last fight due to poor conditioning. This time around he comes prepared - and ready to go the distance if necessary. And that might just be the case. Tim Vinther has a record of 5-2-0 and has won his last three fights.

Match 3, -84 kg Middleweight
Marcus Karallus, OC Fight Team (Germany) Vs.
Johan Antonsson, SBJJA Örebro (Sweden)

A few fights into the event it will be interesting to see if the Swedish audience can push Johan Antonsson into winning against Marcus Karallus from Germany.

Match 4, -77 kg Welterweight
Dennis Siver, OC Fight Team (Germany) Vs.
Kenneth Rosfort, Advanced Gym Copenhagen (Denmark)

Kenneth Rosfort is a veteran of both EVT 2 "Hazard" and EVT 3 "Inferno" with wins in both events. This time he faces Dennis Siver. Siver is less experienced but has a perfect record of 2-0-0.

Match 5, -77 kg Welterweight
Guilon Emmanuel, Fernandez Jiu-Jitsu (France) Vs.
Christian Dellevåg, SBJJA Örebro (Sweden)
*new fight with announced fighters*

After having lost to Anders Eriksson, of Lupus Sweden, at EVT 2 "Hazard", Christian Dellevåg will get his chance to prove himself against Guilon Emmanuel. Both fighters are BJJ specialists.

Match 6, -84 kg Middleweight
Mario Stapel, Shoot Boxen (Germany) Vs.
Mattias Awad, Shootfighting Örebro (Sweden)

Mattias Awad won against Daniel Weichel by judges' decision at EVT 2 "Hazard". Now he is looking to repeat the success against Mario Stapel, an experienced fighter with a record of 7-5-0. Mario Stapel has won his last three fights and seems to be on a roll. Did I mention that Stapel is Daniel Weichel´s instructor...? Dare to guess the result, anyone?

Match 7, -77 kg Welterweight
David Baron, French Konnection (France) Vs.
Ståle Nyang, Ookami (Norway)

Ståle Nyang has a perfect record (8-0-0), but so has David Baron (4-0-0). They are both used to forcing their opponents to tap out. Who will yield this time?

Match 8, -77 kg Welterweight
Daniel Weichel, Shoot Boxen (Germany) Vs.
Joakim Engberg, Lupus (Sweden)

Joakim Engberg is looking to improve his record of 3-3-1. But beating Daniel Weichel (6-1-0) will definitely not be a walk in the park. This is a bout between two very technical fighters. Might we hope for a game of combat-chess in a cage of steel?

Match 9, -70 kg Lightweight
Petr Cajnak, Bellicus Gym Opava (Czech Republic) Vs.
Thomas Hytten, Ookami (Norway)

At EVT 3 "Inferno", Dennis Davis put a dent in Thomas Hytten´s almost perfect record. It is a pretty good bet that Thomas comes ready to fight! This time he is up against one of the Czech Republic's best fighters.

Match 10, -93 kg Light Heavyweight
Allan Goes, Brazilian Top Team (Brazil) Vs.
Pierre Guillet, Tsunami Gym (UK)

The main bout. Allan Goes, veteran of both Pride and UFC goes head to head with submission specialist Pierre Guillet. Two big names in MMA battling it out in Solnahallen. It doesn't get much better than this.

The doors open at 15.30. Fights start 17.00.

KOTC Results
By Keith Mills

San Jacinto, CA-KOTC held a long but surprisingly solid card topped with both Bantamweight and Middleweight championship fights. Joey Villasenor from Jackson's Submissions in New Mexico took the Middleweight belt by defeating Team Quest's Brian Foster while Frankie Bollinger took the Bantamweight belt by defeating Richard Goodwin. Gladiator Challenge's Bantamweight champion Uriajh Faber also fought and showed off his belt but his fight was not for his belt. The Thomas Denny/James Fanshier fight for the Welterweight belt was pushed back to the November 14th pay-per-view show when according to KOTC Denny was injured in training.

Also on the card Robert Emerson returned to the scene to fight a predominantly standup game against Joe Camacho and Brian Sesma defeated Ron Short after taking some damage with Short's explosive ground and pound style.

This card was so packed that 808 Fight Factory's Harris Sarmiento fought on the undercard. Although almost caught in a guillotine choke Harris escaped and exploded for a TKO victory in one of the closest fights of the night. With Thomas Denny all but stripped of his Lightweight belt Sarmiento could be an interesting contender by the end of the year.

Guillard, Clark Duke It Out To Highlight Reality Combat
By Loretta Hunt

To the tune of an estimated 650 spectators, Reality Combat's Western-themed "Duel In The Delta" swaggered into Tunica, Mississippi with an 8-fight card of amateur and pro bouts. Promoters Rich Clementi and Jim Cunningham made an extra effort to ensure the event had all the elements of an exemplary MMA event, which included video fighter intros broadcast over two large viewing screens among the added touches. The result was a tighter presentation than usually seen at local events at this level, and a good opportunity -- particularly for the amateur fighters -- to get some valuable cage time in front of the crowds. The highlights of the evening came from the pros, however, who rounded out the evening following a rapid fire of their amateur peers, who ended all their bouts quickly in their first rounds.

The fight of the night fittingly went to main eventers LaVerne Clark and Melvin Guillard who grappled, scrambled, and slugged it out till the bitter end of their allotted three rounds. Up-and-comer Guillard gave 5-Time UFC vet Clark all he could handle with a trade of powerful punches from the opening bell, but the seasoned Miletich Fighting Systems fighter scored with definitive takedowns and the majority of cage control throughout the fifteen minutes. On the ground, Guillard worked to end the fight by catching Clark first with an armbar and then twice with guillotine attempts. Yet, Clark's experience shone through as he worked his way out each time and fought back with powerful strikes from above. Keeping up a feverish pace that had both men noticeably exhausted by the middle of the second round, the audience roared in approval. Round three had both fighters digging deep to give onlookers quite a show on their feet, and when the three judges failed to identify the victor, the crowd seemed to understand. Although FCF gave a slight edge to Clark for the victory, a rematch between these two would be a worthwhile undertaking all around.

Middleweight Kenny Stevens also had an impressive showing with a flash KO to opponent Ray Totorico by way of knee. Stevens received the Oscar Jackson Fight of the Night Award, named in tribute to the Reality Combat veteran who recently passed away.

Along with Stevens, 145er William McGlothlin demonstrated solid technique against FFC 135-pound champion and pro boxer Antonio Smith. Although a resilient fighter, Smith's jump up in weight proved too much to overcome, as McGlothin unleashed an effective ground and pound campaign that eventually set up the finishing rear naked choke 1:41 into round two.

60 year old Skip Hall did not come out victorious this evening, his ferocity for the sport should be commended. Defying age, Hall began strong with a solid takedown early on, yet succumbed to ground strikes after a right punch opened opportunity for a tide-turning takedown for Barbier.

EVT suffers letdown as Allan Goes' bizarre incident prevents main event from happening!
By Eduardo Alonso

In an absolutely sad, bizarre and unfortunate turn of events, the Swedish fans and the promoters of European Vale Tudo saw their main event being taken off from them, putting an inevitable sense of frustration into months of work. This past Thursday, September 23rd, Pride and UFC veteran Allan Goes was surprised in the Rio de Janeiro international airport by the Brazilian Federal Police, while attempting to board his flight to Sweden. The Federal agents didn't allow him to leave Brazil by any means, therefore making impossible for him to board his plane and get to Sweden along with his teammate Murilo Bustamante, who was going to be his corner for EVT's main event against Pierre Guillet.
According to the Brazilian Top Team, Goes had some sort of problems with an ex-wife, regarding payment of alimony to his kids, and his ex-wife, likely knowing when he would departure, managed to get a threshold making it impossible for Allan to leave the country. This came as a terrible shock and got the promoters and teammates by surprise with EVT for being so close, schedule for September 26th. What followed trough was a series of struggles by lawyers and managers to try to get authoriziation from a judge for the fighter to departure in order to fullfil his commitment with the Scandinavian promotion as well as endless efforts to find a suitable replacement in case it was finally needed. Unfortunately though, neither of the options were viable, as Goes' attempts to get permission to leave Brazil were denied on Friday, and time was short to find a suitable replacement, forcing the promoters to cancel the fight. Murilo Bustamante ended up traveling to Sweden and will be representing the Brazilian Top Team at the show, making a statement to the public on hand and appologizing on behalf of his team for this unfortunate situation.
Both European Vale Tudo and the Brazilian Top Team had already made official statements regarding the situation on the show's website and it's important to remember that the promoters had nothing but the desire to make the best possible show for the fans, and tried for the last minute to make the fight happen, as this reporter had the chance to witness during negotiations in both ends. Although it's understandable that fans may feel hindered by the lack of this fight on the card, it was really something totally out of control for the promoters and the Brazilian Top Team, and makes it amazing to believe a fighter of the caliber of Allan Goes wouldn't know what's going on in his personal life, regarding his situations with the law. This left a bad taste in many mouths, and for us MMA lovers we can now only hope this won't cause any damage to the promotion or the sport in an area where it is amazingly quickly developing and will certainly mean an important ground for fighters from all over the globe in the near future. This Sunday, September 26th, the city of Stockholm in Sweden will still see an great fighting card full of Europe's best, and those who attend the show will most certainly not regret! Here's the updated fight card for EVT 4 Gladiators:

Sebastian Korschilgen (Germany) vs. Robbie Oliver (UK)
Tim Vinther (Denmark) vs. Diego Gonzales (Sweden)
Marcus Karallus (Germany) vs. Johan Antonsson (Sweden)
Dennis Siver (Germany) vs. Kenneth Rosfort (Denmark)
Guilon Emmanuel (France) vs. Christian Dellevag (Sweden)
Mario Stapel (Germany) vs. Mattias Awad (Sweden)
David Baron (France) vs. Stale Nyang (Norway)
Daniel Weichel (Germany) vs. Joakim Engberg (Sweden)
Petr Cajnak (Czech Republic) vs. Thomas Hytten (Norway)

FFC Results

In a night of twists turns and injuries, a sold out crowd watched as Nick Thompson took an unlikely path to winning the FFC MW Tourney. After taking a big right hand from Brian Ebersole and failing to answer several blows in the first fight of the night, Referee John Dixson stepped in and halted the action. Thompson thought the night was over.

Later in the evening after Dave Phillips and Jessie Chilton won their opening round matchs but were unable to continue due to injuries. Thompson came back into the tournament by virtue of the survivor rule.

After beating a game Sean Hoffman in the semi's Thompson faced another beneficiary of the survivor rule, John "The Saint" Renken. In a seesaw battleThompson put an exclaimation point to the evening by nailing a tiring John Renken with a big right that dropped Renken along the ropes and forcing Referee Big John Dixson to end the proceedings.

In single fight action Dave Vitkay 205lbs seemed in control of Ron Fields 205lbs. with solid ground and pound. In the second round Fields finally landed a flurry that left Vitkay unable to respond forcing a referee stoppage.

Veterans, newcomers share spotlight in Extreme Challenge 59

MEDINA, Minn. -- The latest edition of the Extreme Challenge will probably be best remembered for some outstanding individual performances... by both MMA veterans and up-and-comers.

For example:

[] UFC vet Travis Wiuff had to get off his back and out of trouble to stop a rugged Josh Hendricks and win his 16th consecutive bout.
[] Keith Wisniewski's dominating submission win over Kyle Jensen proved again that this young fighter is destined to be among the sports best at 170 pounds.
[] Dave Menne gave fans a look at why he was the best in the world at 185 a few years ago with a 53-second win that left Eddie Sanchez unconscious.
[] Joey Clark had the largest fan following and didn't disappoint with a sub victory over Wayne Bogard in the first round.
[] Roger Huerta came from obscurity to finish second in the Super Brawl/Extreme Challenge 8-man tourney this year and showed he isn't slowing down with a TKO win over a tough Matt Brady.
And, the list goes on and on...
Steve Friedrichs hinted at retirement after a quick, impressive win over Kyle Olson... Sean Wilson turned a tossup into a clinic in a win over Brandon Carlson... and Mike Whitehead showed he had punching ability and power in a win over Demian Decorah.
If you were looking for long fights... that wasn't on the table at this Extreme Challenge event... as all but one of the 10 bouts ended in the first round. However, the strong individual efforts against quality opposition kept the fans happy throughout the show.
"On paper, most of these fights had potential to go the distance," said promoter Monte Cox. "But that's what makes this sport so amazing... one mistake against a quality opponent and anybody can lose quickly."
The next Extreme Challenge is set to return to the Medina Entertainment Center on Nov. 12.

Nevada Court Rules Against Temporary Injunction of UFC Welterweight Title Match:
Penn Attorney Sites Mediation Next, Trial A Last Resort

By Loretta Hunt

Almost four months after filing a 21-page civil action lawsuit against promoter Zuffa Sports Entertainment for allegedly stripping him of his UFC welterweight title unlawfully, BJ Penn and representation received their first preliminary ruling today from the Clark County District Court of Nevada on the matter. In a hearing that began at 9am, the Court was asked to decide upon a petition Penn's legal counsel had submitted for injunctive relief, barring the UFC from conducting a welterweight championship bout without its client. The Court had its answer by this afternoon.

UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta reaches out to Penn after Penn won the belt from Matt Hughes
UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta reaches out to Penn after Penn won the belt from Matt Hughes
"They denied the preliminary injunction sought, which was to deny the fight with Matt Hughes and [Georges] St. Pierre being identified as a title fight," Penn's lead attorney Steven Strauss stated calmly this evening from his affiliate offices of Raleigh, Hunt & McGarry, P.C. in Nevada. "The judge found that he had insufficient basis to make that ruling."

According to Strauss, both parties had submitted paperwork to the Courts outlining their beliefs regarding the injunctive request prior to today. "They [Zuffa] were claiming that the title was ceremonial only," says Strauss. In contrast, Penn's representation claimed that the belt was the property of their client and that it was "meaningful, that it means something to the MMA fans, that it means something to the fighters that fight for it -- that it's not simply Zuffa's title to take away from a fighter that earns it." In the end, Strauss says the Court decided it did not have an adequate basis to make the extraordinary request.

With this initial judgment, Zuffa may continue, unhindered, with its previously announced plans to have former champion Hughes, the fighter Penn beat last January to earn his title, and St. Pierre fight one another for the vacated UFC welterweight title on October 22nd at UFC 50. However, Strauss explains that the Court's decision was made without prejudice, meaning the ruling itself was not final in any way, and may be revisited in the future.

In addition, and possibly of greater interest to Penn and his overall claims which are yet to be resolved, Strauss says, "The court also made a statement telling the parties, Zuffa and Penn, that he was concerned that there was evidence that BJ had been wrongfully stripped of his title and encouraged the parties to get together and resolve this." One of Penn's main arguments remains that an exclusivity clause within his contract had expired and was never extended, leaving him free to field and take other offers outside of the UFC, even after he had won a title with the promotion. Zuffa stripped Penn of the welterweight title on May 13th, days before Penn performed in the rival promotion K-1 in Japan.

Strauss says no initial contact was made today for impending mediation, but he expects communication to be made shortly, and that there were "hand shakes all around" following the proceedings. Strauss reports that UFC president Dana White and Penn shook hands as well.

"The next step would be to follow the court's strong recommendation and to try and resolve the dispute with Zuffa," says Strauss, "as well as prepare for trial in the event that we are unable to resolve the dispute and take the issue of wrongful stripping of the title to a jury seeking damages. Also, the court stated that he would be able to revisit any other relief that he thought was appropriate including the potential recognition of two titles." Along with introducing a potential concept that Penn's title could be reinstated alongside whoever the UFC recognizes as its current champion, Strauss adds that the Court addressed that monetary damages, either alone or in combination of, were another viable possibility.

"Obviously, he's disappointed," commented Strauss on Penn's reaction to the news, "but this is one step in a process, that we expect that we will ultimately prevail in the event that there's not a negotiated solution. The ideal solution would be for Zuffa to recognize that it's in everyone's best interest for BJ to fight as the champion in the UFC, which is what BJ's been pushing for all along."

Strauss also pointed out that Zuffa has changed their initial stance regarding the title in question. "Although Zuffa had earlier threatened to sue BJ for fighting in K-1, and therefore vacating the title; they've abandoned that claim. Their claim now is the contract, the promotional agreement that they had with him had expired. Therefore, their claim was that there was nothing that required them to offer a title defense to a title holder, which is a very interesting argument because our position is that Zuffa is really trashing its own title."

FCF has yet to receive the official transcripts of today's proceedings, which will be made available in the next few days. Zuffa could not be reached for comment at their Las Vegas offices.

For the time being, Strauss says he will try and adhere to the Court's recommendation for independent resolution between the two parties, but is prepared to go to trial if that become a necessity. "I want to emphasize that there was a cordial exchange after the hearing and that this was round one. The bout's not over."

Main event cancelled - Allan Goes could not leave Brazil

The main event between Allan Goes, Brazilian Top Team Vs. Pierre Guillet was unfortunately cancelled. Goes was approached by federal police when he was boarding the plane and was not allowed to leave Brazil due to legal issues. Intensive legal work to get a solution took place but without any success. The EVT matchmaker worked hard to find a suitable replacement fighter, but without luck since it was on less then two days notice. Brazilian Top Team member Murilo Bustamante apologized for this and spoke to the fans at the event. He said in a statement:

"The Brazilian Top Team is very sad that Allan Goes fight had to be cancelled, we were not aware of any legal problems and we did our best to solve them. We also tried to get a replacement fighter but it was unfortunately not possible. We apologise to the spectators and fans and hope to be able to show Brazilian Top Team's skills on a future European Vale Tudo event."

UFC President White Responds To Legal Proceedings:
Reiterates Penn Is No Longer A UFC Fighter

By Loretta Hunt

In case there was any speculation regarding Zuffa's participation in yesterday's seven hour proceedings at the Clark County District Court of Nevada, UFC president Dana White made it all too clear with his first public comments today regarding the ruling. "We were there for one reason only," White said in a conversation with FCF this afternoon. "Would they award the temporary injunction? That was the only reason we were there. The answer was no."

UFC President Dana White
Dana White
"BJ Penn is not the 170 pound champion," White continued matter-of-factly. "He's no longer a UFC fighter. His contract expired. He's a K-1 fighter. Maybe he'll win a title in the K-1 organization."

As part of a 21-page civil law suit, Penn and legal representation are contending that the fighter was unlawfully stripped of the UFC welterweight title he had earned on January 31st. As part of the lawsuit, Penn's attorneys were seeking a temporary injunction barring Zuffa from holding a welterweight title bout without its client. A Nevada judge ruled yesterday that he had insufficient basis to make such a ruling.

Today, White reiterated what Penn's lead counsel Steven Strauss had stated yesterday, that Zuffa had presented to the Court its belief that the belt was purely ceremonial. "There's a UFC champion and the belt— this is basically a trophy," White commented. "It says you're the best fighter we have in that weight class at this time." Penn's representation had contended that the belt was their client's property once it was awarded to him, holding value with both MMA fans and the competitors that fought for it and that the UFC did not have the right to simply take it away from a fighter. But, White says the UFC does have that power, unlike in boxing, where separate regulatory organizations monitor and rule over such situations. "It's not like there's a sanctioning body out there like the WBO, WBC, ABC, to rank the fighters and hold the belts," White said.

Although Penn and his representation were denied the initial injunctive petition, the fighter's lawsuit is still active. White did not confirm that a mediation period between Zuffa and Penn might be pending as Strauss had suggested was recommended yesterday as part of the judge's ruling. The official transcripts of the proceedings will be made available to the public in the next few days.

From Dream Stage Entertainment:
CRO COP VERSUS BARNETT AT HIGH OCTANE

PrideFC High Octane poster LOS ANGELES, California – Two more bouts have been added to PRIDE FIGHTING's October 31st event HIGH OCTANE. Already headlining the event is the highly anticipated title bout between middleweight world champion Wanderlei Silva and top contender Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Now joining the fightcard will be Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic versus Josh "The Babyface Assassin" Barnett and Dan "Hollywood" Henderson versus Kazuhiro Nakamura.

HIGH OCTANE will take place from the Saitama Super Arena in Japan and is scheduled to debut on North American pay per view via iNDEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, and TVN on Sunday, October 31st, 2004 at 9:00pm EST, 6:00pm PST.

Headlining the HIGH OCTANE fightcard is the highly anticipated title bout between middleweight world champion "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva and top contender Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. These two originally fought in November 2003 at FINAL CONFLICT, meeting in the finals of the middleweight Grand Prix tournament. That evening, both men defeated two opponents to reach the finals---Jackson TKO'd "The Iceman" Chuck Liddell and Silva won a decision over Hidehiko Yoshida. Once in the finals, both fighters battled fatigue, but it was Silva who came away with the Grand Prix championship via TKO. With the tournament behind them, Silva now puts his middleweight title on the line against Jackson. Will it be a repeat performance for the "The Axe Murderer" or redemption for "Rampage"?

Also on the fight card, the ever-dangerous Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic continues his climb up PRIDE FIGHTING's heavyweight ranks, this time taking on the "Babyface Assassin" Josh Barnett. After his stunning loss to Kevin "The Monster" Randleman in the opening round of the heavyweight Grand Prix tournament, "Cro Cop" has rededicated himself to his pursuit of the title with convincing victories over Hiromitsu Kanehara, Shungo Oyama, and Aleksander Emelianenko. Now, he faces one of his toughest opponents yet in Josh Barnett. Representing AMC Pankration out of Seattle, Washington, Barnett is 6'3/250 lbs and boasts an impressive record of 15-1 (including wins over Dan "The Beast" Severn, Semmy Schilt, Gan McGee, and Yuki Kondo). Most impressive on his resume is his victory over "The Natural" Randy Couture that won him the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 36.

Another bout on the HIGH OCTANE fightcard features Dan "Hollywood" Henderson versus Kazuhiro Nakamura. Fighting out of Temecula, California and representing Team Quest, Dan Henderson is one of the most dangerous middleweights in the world. His last match was a devastatingly quick knockout of the highly regarded Murilo Bustamante at FINAL CONFLICT 2003. His opponent at HIGH OCTANE will be the protégé of judo legend, Hidehiko Yoshida, Kazuhiro Nakamura. Like Henderson, Nakamura is coming off of a victory (via decision) over Murilo Bustamante. An up and coming middleweight, Nakamura has had great success thus far in his career with wins over Daniel Gracie and Dos Caras Jr.

More matches to be announced soon!
