Hawaii Prince Hotel - Honolulu, Hawaii 12:00 Noon, November 30, 2001 By Michael Onzuka - Mike@onzuka.com As everyone knows by now, what you see is not always what you get, especially in fight cards. Due to many circumstances, the UFC veterans, Eugene "Wolf" Jackson and Brad Gumm, that were supposed to be fighting Hawaii fighters are no longer on the card. Some new faces for the Hawaii fans stepped in to face three of Hawaii's growing top guns in the MMA scene. Two of retired Shooto champ Erik Paulson's students will face Ray "Bradda" Cooper and Falaniko Vitale. Word on the street was that Niko was not sure that he could make the 185 lb. class, but has shown that he can hang with everyone he has faced at 205. He would make waves in the 185 lb. class, but the 205 lb. class is flooded with many great fighters so it will probably be more difficult to make a name for himself. Ron "The Machine Gun" Jhun returns to action after his epic battle against Pete Spratt to face the Pride veteran, Shannon "The Cannon" Ritch. Ritch is just off a performance in the Ironheart Crown show where he fought Henry Matamoros. As noticed in the fight card, the Jesus is Lord team has suffered a break up, but I will find out more after talking to the key members of the team before speculating. The remaining fights on the card mixes Hawaii's up and coming fighters against Chris Brennan's Next Generation Team and Eugene Jackson's Team Gladiator. Both fighters were there to support and corner their stable of fighters. Jackson looked trim and in shape and Brennan is always ready for war. UFC and WFA veteran refereee, Larry Landless, will be the head referee for the event and ran the rules meeting. The Warriors Quest is complying to the Nevada Athletic Commission and UFC rules. The press conference was held at the beautiful Hawaii Prince Hotel at the entrance to Waikiki and near the large Ala Moana Shopping Center. It was quite an upscale venue and the best layout I have seen for a press conference. If the fights live up to anywhere of the same class as the weigh-in venue, Hawaii fans should enjoy the show. By Loretta Hunt A capacity crowd of well-over a thousand packed themselves into the Vanderbilt arena in Plainview, Long Island last night to witness an exciting 15-fight mixed card of Muay Thai, Kickboxing, and Freestyle Grappling unfold -- and they were not disappointed! Going into the wee hours of the morning, fans cheered for their favorites and were treated to some of the best fighters the tri-state area and beyond has to offer. The Results:

Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii - December 1, 2001 By Chris Onzuka - Chris@onzuka.com The Warriors Quest crew tries to improve upon every event, not only with the fights, but with the fight spectacle. This time they had three giant video screens set up, laser light shows and shooting mists for the fighter entrances. The Warriors Quest Champions, Jhun and Cooper also had a very cool intro video. The judges would have an easy night as only one fight went to the regulated time limit. However elite referee and always cordial, Larry Landless had his work cut out for him, good thing he was flown in for the event. The preliminary bouts were all submissions and the main events all technical knock outs, both sets of results separated by a majority decision. It looked almost too organized for such an unpredictable sport. The Hawaii team, which consisted of mostly Jesus Is Lord team (or former JIL members), edged out the mainland team, which consisted of mostly Eugene Jackson's Gladiators Academy members 5-4. This is probably directly attributable to fair matchmaking. Brennan Kamaka always states that he likes to make matches that both fighters have equal opportunities to win. The earlier fights seem to fly by, but the normally bloodthirsty crowd loved the David Yeung-Bao Quach fight that went to a decision. The main events held some surprises. Local star Niko Vitale seemed to be dominating Sean Gray until Gray got to his knees picked up Vitale on his back and jumped backwards. This must have knocked the wind out of Vitale and Gray took advantage of it. Ron Jhun, who recently came off of a very questionable referee stoppage at the WFA, proved again that he is a top gun, a machine gun that is (sorry, I just had to do that) in the 185lb division. Why isn't the UFC calling? Jhun would make an incredible addition to that UFC's thinly populated 185lb division. And finally, Jeremy Bennett had an interesting strategy against Bradda Cooper, which he did not exactly get to fully utilize. After being very successful defending Cooper's punches earlier, Cooper slipped one in and staggered Bennett to the canvas. One of Bennett's corner men, UFC vet, Eugene Jackson, thought that Bennett was knocked out and quickly reacted by throwing in the towel, calling an end to the bout. Bennett obviously did not see the towel and was surprised when referee Landless stopped the bout. Bennett was disappointed with the result but was very respectful and accepted the decision like a true competitor.

From Josh Hedges of Zuffa/UFC: UFC 35 - Randleman vs. Babalu, Liddell vs. Suloev Two UFC veterans return to the Octagon on Friday, January 11th, as Kevin "The Monster" Randleman takes on Renato "Babalu" Sobral at UFC 35: Throw Down. Randleman last fought in the UFC on May 4th at UFC 31: Locked and Loaded. Babalu's last appearance was at UFC 28: High Stakes in November 2000, as a heavyweight. He is now dropping down to 205 pounds to go after the light heavyweight title. In another light heavyweight bout, Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell will take on Russian newcomer Amar Suloev. Liddell last fought at UFC 33: Victory in Vegas, on September 28th, defeating Murilo Bustamante by unanimous decision. Suloev is a kickboxer with a MMA record of 36-4, and he has won two 8-man tournaments. Tickets for UFC: Throw Down are on sale now at MoheganSun.com and Tickets.com, or by phone at 1-800-477-6849 or 1-888-226-7711. |
2 YEARS BEHIND BARS! King of the Cage heavyweight champion Bobby Hoffman has apparently accepted a plea bargain that will put the 3-time UFC veteran behind bars for two years. Hoffman, a former Extreme Challenge heavyweight champ and former member of Team Extreme, was allegedly facing theft, domestic assault and weapons charges. Jailed with a $1 million bail, Hoffman reportedly agreed to the plea bargain on Friday. It has also been reported that Hoffman failed his drug test at the last UFC... the second failed test in a row. His win over Mark Robinson was changed to a draw after the first failed test. However, the second failed test will have no bearing on the loss to Josh Barnett. Hoffman was asked to leave the Miletich Martial Arts Center in Iowa about 6 months ago and he relocated in California. The RINGS veteran was then dropped 2 months later from Team Extreme and was given an unconditional release by longtime manager Monte Cox. |
From KOTC promoter Bud Brutsman: A sport is as strong as its champions and, like many, I was saddened and disappointed to hear the recent troubles of our King of the Cage World Heavyweight Champion, Bobby Hoffman. Given the circumstances and for reasons of practicality, the King of the Cage organization has made a decision to vacate the Heavyweight Title. Throughout his fighting career, Bobby has been a scrapper, always finding a way to win. His record and his abilities in the cage can never be questioned, but our organization cannot stand behind his recent actions. Our sport is in a transitional period now, on the cusp of breaking through into the mainstream. While major leagues like the NFL, NBA, and MLB can absorb its miscreant athletes, our sport cannot. Mixed Martial Arts is continuing to fight for legitimacy and we must prove that our sport differentiates itself with professionalism, integrity, and sportsmanship. On February 9, 2002 at "King of the Cage 12" the vacant KOTC World Heavyweight Belt will be up for grabs. Number One contender Eric Pele will finally be given his opportunity at the championship. We're looking forward to a great match and a great show and we hope to see you there. From: Bud Brutsman, "King of the Cage" |

From the event's promoter: JOE DOERKSEN TO FIGHT "THE CROW" DAVID LOISEAU IN UCC 7 SUPERFIGHT! Montreal (Canada) - At UCC 7 two of the most promising young Canadian fighters will go head to head in a much anticipated SUPERFIGHT. Joe Doerksen had 14 fight winning streak prior to entering the UCC's Ring of Fury in October's UCC 6. He has faced and defeated some of the best in the world and he feels ready to get a win in Canada's "big show". He will be going to war with former UCC Canadian MW champion David "The Crow" Loiseau. Loiseau is 4-2 in the UCC and is known as an exciting, charismatic warrior by his fans and a feared fighting machine by his foes. On January 25th they will show the world which one is ready to climb the next step to the top. |
From the event's promoter: Egan Inoue and Philip Perez are out Paulo Filho and Josh Thompson are in. Honolulu, HI - With fighter safety and health the single most important issue to the organizations that will be hosting "SHOGUN", Egan Inoue and Philip Perez will be replaced for the December 15th show at the Convention Center in Honolulu, HI. In their place will be Paulo Filho of the world famous "Brazilian Top Team" and Josh Thompson from American Kickboxing Academy. Egan Inoue suffered an avulsion fracture of a bone on one of his hands. According to Dr. Brian Izuka, orthopedic surgeon, if stressed more, it will require surgery and no activity for 4 months. Inoue states, "I'm sorry to the people that have supported me and were looking forward to this fight. I will still be at Shogun on December 15th to support my fighters, 'Cabbage', Abe Rodriguez, Dennis Tadio, Berret Yoshida, Tory Windword, and I'll be there to support the event. I'm still the spokesman for Shogun." Philip Perez was the victim of a freak training accident, getting knocked unconscious. If a fighter suffers any type of brain trauma where he is rendered unconscious, training, fighting, or otherwise, it is the opinion of Perez's trainers, Shogun staff, and some athletic commissions that the fighter discontinue activities that might cause further damage for a minimum of 30 days. Paulo Filho is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt powerhouse with wins over Yuki Kondo and Ikuhisa Minowa and he is ranked #7 in the world according the Mixed Martial Arts Media Top 10 balloting process. He is eager to show the American public his MMA prowess. He will be facing Dennis Hallman. Josh Thompson is a former All-American wrestler with North Idaho College and Stanford, and a MMA veteran. He also was one of the original-founding members of Team Idaho. Josh is currently Philip Perez's and BJ Penn's sparring partner, making him a natural choice as a replacement. He will be facing Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto. Tickets are on sale now through Ticket Plus, which has 55 outlets in Hawaii. Tickets will also be on sale through JKD Training Systems, Dave & Busters, and Grappling Unlimited. Tickets will be sold at the Honolulu Convention Center on the day of the event, December 15th, after 4:30 pm. |

From the event's promoter: Huge and I literally mean a "HUGE" addition to the Storm 2001 event this Saturday 12-8-01 has been added to the card. #1 ranked UFC heavyweight Josh "the baby faced assassin" Barnett will be taking on 6'5" 400 pound Bob "silverback" Saap in a special submission match. Barnett is considered the most versatile heavyweight in the world today with world class skills both standing and on the ground. Saap is a monster! 6'5" and 400lbs of solid muscle (this guy has ripped abs at 400lbs). Some may remember Bob Saap from the brutal beating that he gave to William "the refridgerator" Perry on the FX Toughman event. Saap was a former pro footbal player and WCW wrestler who has taken to MMA and was recently signed by K-1 to fight in their new MMA events. Just the sight of these 2 Goliaths in the same ring is a sight, just imagine when they start throwing around their combined 650 pounds in fierce action...front row ticket holders beware!! From the event's promoter: Filho Fractures a bone under the Eye in training, Bitetti ready to go Honolulu, HI -- The day after Paulo Filho agrees to take on Dennis Hallman in an octagon at Shogun, he sustained a fracture to the eye socket that will keep him from fighting. In his place fellow countryman and UFC veteran, Amaury Bitetti, will be taking his place. Amaury has been interested in fighting at Shogun since the event was announced and was a natural choice to take Filho's place. Promoter, Helen Miller, had Amaury's contract in hand within hours after receiving word of the unfortunate training accident, in Brazil, that will sideline Filho. "It was always our intention to bring top notch Hawaiian fighters, Mainland fighters, Japanese fighters, and Brazilian fighters under one roof for a great night of fights in Hawaii." Says Miller, "After Egan's injury, we went straight to the top for the fight fans. Its unfortunate that Top Team won't be able to represent, but injuries are a part of the game you have no control over and the health of these athletes is #1. Amaury is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt that always puts on a fantastic show. He is a truly exciting fighter to watch because he is not afraid to go toe-to-toe. He's proven that." Amaury is quoted as saying, "I'd rather die than tap out!" Some of Amaury's titles are: Jiu-Jitsu: Two times world champion in the absolute class 96-97 Black Belt More than ten times Brazilian champion (98 last time) Black Belt More than ten times State champion (98 last time) Judo: State champion 86 - Juvenile Brazilian champion 86 - Junior State champion 92 - Black Belt adult Interstate champion 92 - Black Belt adult Boxing: State champion 92 - Heavyweight Adult Dennis Hallman has been fantastic about the whole situation and has not wavered with his change of opponents. Pacific Sports Entertainment would like to publicly acknowledge his support and attitude throughout these unforeseen events. |

By Eduardo Alonso This past week the sport of Mixed Martial Arts suffered a terrible blow in Brazil. The Mayor of Sao Paulo, Miss Marta Suplicy, sanctioned a law that forbids any NHB/MMA event to be held in the city of Sao Paulo. Just when the sport is starting to grow again all over the world, the biggest city in Brazil and the 3rd biggest in the world takes this huge step back in the efforts of the Brazilian NHB community. The law was written and proposed by a councilman from the same party as the Mayor. The councilman, Mr. Arselino Tatto was quoted in a local newspaper as having said, "This kind of event only gives incentive to violence, especially when they are shown on TV. This -- which for me isn't a sport -- makes me sick." The sad thing is that this councilman also said that he had only watched one NHB fight in his life, and apparently this was enough for him to prejudice a whole sport community, with lots of professionals involved. However the MMA community in Brazil is already making all possible efforts to change that, since this can represent a major threat to the future of the sport in Brazil, with all the importance in terms of investments that the city of Sao Paulo can represent. Also, MECA World Vale Tudo was supposed to hold a show in Sao Paulo in March, and this can hinder plans for that event. FCF hopes that this situation will change soon, and we will work along with the MMA community in Brazil to change this scenario. Look for a complete article in the January edition of FCF, as well as updates on the situation. |

By Eduardo Alonso Shortly after becoming the first ever Pride Middleweight champion, the "Axe Murderer" Vanderlei Silva will be returning to the Pride ring to face yet another Japanese Opponent at the next Pride event! This time his opponent will be Alexander Otsuka, who has already fought the likes of Marco Ruas, Igor Vovchanchyn, Renzo Gracie, Ken Shamrock and Guy Mezger among others. Although Otsuka's career is far from brilliant, with a lot of losses in his record, he has proven himself to be a tough opponent. This will be Vanderlei´s fourth fight of the year, and his fourth Japanese opponent. FCF was told that Silva is training very hard and is healed from any injuries. Silva reportedly knocked out two people in training at the Chute Boxe camp this past week. |

From Zuffa/UFC: Please note that the contest end date is December 21st (not December 24th. [Yesterday's post has been changed to reflect this] |
By Eddie Goldman The last time Sugar Shane Mosley, WBC welterweight champ (38-0, 35 KO's) and at the top of the pound-for-pound list in many people's eyes, lost a fight was in the finals of the 1992 Olympic Trials in a three-round amateur bout. His opponent then: Vernon Forrest, now himself also a professional with a record of 33-0, 1 no contest, and 26 KO's. Sugar Shane's next fight is January 26 at Madison Square Garden's Theater, and will be shown on HBO. His opponent now: Vernon Forrest, finally after all these years. We talked this week with Shane about this fight, and we will bring this interview to you this week on our "No Holds Barred News" segment on WBAI's "Lightshow." Also, in an extensive interview, we review a boxing safety seminar (you read that right) organized by Dr. Margaret Goodman and Dr. Flip Homansky of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. They were both in town Dec. 1 for this seminar, and they shared their thoughts with us on this important subject, as well as their assessment of how regulation of mixed martial arts has gone in their state. (This segment was postponed from last week.) We will also discuss the 2001 Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships, just held Dec. 6-9 in Patras, Greece. Next week we name and speak with our 2001 Fighter of the Year (hint: those against executions need not apply), and also Vernon Forrest. "Lightshow" airs weekly late Friday night/early Saturday morning, 3-5 AM Eastern Time. The "No Holds Barred News" segment usually airs in the second hour of the show, between 4 AM and 5 AM EST, early Saturday morning, December 15. This week's segment is prerecorded. WBAI broadcasts in New York on 99.5 FM. For those not in the New York area, WBAI can also be heard live on the Internet. There are two sites that stream the signal: : http://www.wbai.org/ and http://www.2600.com/wbai. At this time broadcasts of "Lightshow" are not archived, but we are working on getting these audio interviews posted. WBAI is a 50,000 watt, non-commercial station. This means that, unlike the advertiser-supported media, our opinions are not restrained by any commercial interests. "Lightshow" is an arts and entertainment show whose main host and producer is Fred Geobold. I was a co-producer on this show from 1993 to 1998, and it was on "Lightshow" that I began coverage of mixed martial arts with interviews of Royce Gracie and Manny Yarbrough prior to UFC III in 1994. I rejoined the show as a producer and co-host in September 2001. |

Dave and Buster's, Honolulu, Hawaii December 13, 2001 By Michael Onzuka - Mike@onzuka.com Today at the new Dave and Buster's center in downtown Honolulu, the Shogun Press conference was held. Along with the fighters, Enson Inoue was there to back his fighters, as were Chuck Liddell, Crazy Bob Cook, and Lance Gibson. The local ABC affiliate was present and local media. Many fighters were already in and showed up at the roof top open-air venue. Today was a very windy and rainy day, but we were spared of heavy rains while the press conference was going on. Promoters Helen Miller and Herb Tantan welcomed everyone to the event and started off with Egan Inoue explaining the injury that caused him to have to pull out of the fight. Inoue broke his middle finger against Doerkson in the last Super Brawl. Egan commented that Hallman probably wants him to say something nice about him, but he just told the audience to look at his broken finger (flipping the bird). Hallman was next and greeted Egan in the same fashion. He was disappointed that he was not fighting Egan, but looked forward to Bitetti saying that he does not run away from the fight like "others" he has fought in the past. Hallman looked bigger than Egan and said he is about 188 lbs right now. Local favorite, Wesley "Cabbage" Correira was up next and said that he is going to get revenge for the loss that his opponent Aaron Brink gave to his teammate Dennis Tadio. Egan's "little" brother Enson stated that he probably could not top Cabbage's trash talk, but stated that his fighters are excited about fighting outside of Japan and he thinks they are ready. In order to help the local community, Helen Miller announced that they have teamed up with the Hawaii Food Bank and will be accepting a donation of canned goods at the event. American Kickboxing fighter, Josh Thompson told everyone about his friend and sparring partner, UFC Veteran Brian Johnston who broke a blood vessel in his neck that caused a stroke. Johnston spent three months in the hospital and just came home about three weeks ago and is still in a wheelchair. Unfortunately, Johnston is not covered by the New Japan's medical insurance and has a ton of medical bills. American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) raised money to make t-shirts to sell in order for Johnston to raise money for his medical bills. The shirts are $20 so make sure that you pick up a shirt and help support this courageous fighter. Finally, Herb Tantan completed the press conference by explaining that the fights will be held in a cage and that cages are much safer than rings. The fighters will not fall out of the cage like they can in a regular ring. The fighters look confident and ready to kick off this inaugural Shogun event at the Hawaii Convention Center which is another first as far as Hawaii mixed martial arts venues. On a side note, headliner Dennis Hallman broke off of Matt Hume's AMC school and is on his own. I asked him about it and you can find out the background behind this breakup if you subscribe to Full Contact Fighter. How's that for some suspense? Shogun Fight Card for December 15th:

Honolulu Convention Center, Honolulu, Hawaii December 15, 2001 By Chris Onzuka - Chris@onzuka.com The inaugural Shogun event was a production extravaganza featuring laser light shows, two video screens on the sides of the cage, and one giant screen by the fighter's entrance. The fighters came to the ring with their own individualized intro videos which included the fighters' statistics. In between rounds, the video screens replayed the high points of each round of every fight. It seemed to get off to a rocky start, but basically that was because the promoters were taping the event for Pay-Per-View. The crowd did not understand that was the reason behind the periodic delays. The underdogs had their day at this event as many of the fighters that were not favored to win, surprised their opponents by finding a way to pull out a win. Some of the highlights were the Fryklund-Armendarez war -- these guys took and unloaded a ton of bombs; an unknown gave Yves Edwards the fight of his life; Cabbage destroyed Brink (everyone I spoke with before the fight thought the exact opposite); Baret Yoshida, after nearly being submitted with a guillotine choke, turned around and choked out Mitchell with the same technique; And finally, another war of attrition between Hallman and Bitetti. It was a very close fight, with Bitetti squeezing it out on the judges' cards. Fight descriptions and pictures will be in the next issue of Full Contact Fighter. Don't forget to subscribe now! From RITC Writer/Statistician John Petrilli: Ambriz defeats "A-Dawg" Foland wins with 20-second KO First things first. The Homer Moore versus Joseph Riggs fight did not take place. Both fighters were at Celebrity Theatre for the 4PM weigh-in ready to go. An administrative "glitch" prevented this fight from happening. The Arizona Commission would not accept transferability of Homer's Nevada fighter's license necessitating cancellation of this match. Hopefully this matchup will be scheduled for a future RITC show. An enthusiastic and boisterous crowd of 1,500 enjoyed Rage in the Cage 32. In the Main Event, a trimmed down Jimmy Ambriz (at 295 lbs) defeated Allan "A-Dawg" Sullivan by injury stoppage in round 3. Mike Foland, an absolutely "ripped " wrestler/weightlifter traveled all the way from Palm Beach, Florida just to compete in RITC. He won his match with a devastating 20-second knockout that had the entire crowd on their feet. This impressive victory earned Fighter of the Night honors for Mike. Other candidates for Fighter of the Night honors were Jimmy Ambriz and Steve Sayegh. INJURY FORCES "NY BAD-ASS" OUT! Phil Baroni, known for his strong punching and even stronger heart, but could not out do a fracture in his right hand and has been forced to pull out of his upcoming bout in UFC 35. Baroni was to face Eugene Jackson on Friday January 11th at the Mohegan Sun in a middleweight matchup. An old nagging injury finally gave way to a fracture in his right hand while working 3-minute drills of wrestling and kickboxing nonstop. "I was having trouble with my hand for a long time, but I needed to try and work through the pain." It all came to an end while training over the weekend. Baroni's trainer forced him to get an x-ray of the blown-up hand. "I really didn't want to go to the doctor because I knew it was bad and didn't want to hear I wasn't going to be able to fight," said an upset Baroni. "I was really looking forward to this fight -- I had a ton of people coming to see me fight and a lot of fans emailing me every day wishing me well." Baroni will have to lay off the hand for about 6-weeks, but hopes to be able to fight in a UFC in the near future. |

From Josh Hedges of Zuffa/UFC: UFC 35 Card Complete! LAS VEGAS, December 21, 2001....The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced today the last three fighters on the card for UFC: Throw Down, to take place Friday, January 11, 2002, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Jeff Monson (6-3-0 in Mixed Martial Arts) fills the heavyweight slot against Staten Island, NY native Ricco Rodriguez (7-1-0). Both Monson and Rodriguez are former Submission Wrestling World Champions. Monson is 1-1 in the UFC. He defeated David Dodd at UFC 27 and lost a decision to Chuck Liddell at UFC 29. Rodriguez is 2-0 in the UFC, defeating Andrei Arlovski at UFC 32 and Pete Williams at UFC 34. Due to a broken hand suffered in training, Phil Baroni was forced to withdraw from his fight against Eugene "The Wolf" Jackson (10-4-0) from East Palo Alto, Calif. Baroni's replacement is undefeated Massachusetts native Keith Rockel (2-0-0). Rockel recently defeated UFC veteran Adrian Serrano to win the Hook N Shoot title. By Aaron Crecy FUKUOKA, Japan--On the heels of the most well-attended event in Dream Stage Entertainment history, when well over 53,000 in attendance packed the Tokyo Dome for Pride 17, ticket sales have lagged considerably for its subsequent production, Pride 18 Cold Fury 2. With 8,000 tickets sold for the event, there will be approximately 2,000 empty seats at the Marine Messe Arena in Fukuoka. Perhaps the lack of interest is related to what may be Pride's weakest card in recent memory, with a main event that features the ponderous Semmy Schilt versus a lumbering Yoshihiro Takayama. The most intriguing fights on the card promise to be the first three. In the opening bout, Daijiro "The Human Punching Bag" Matsui takes on the larger but possibly depleted Quinton Jackson, who was forced to cut between eight and 10 pounds to make the 205-pound weight limit the morning of the fight. Next, IVC 14 champion Alex Stiebling faces Allan Goes, who sources report to be distracted by personal concerns. Then, Murilo "Ninja" Rua will pit his impressive ground skills against Alex Andrade, said to be the Lions Den's best striker. Two other fights have at least some potential for competitiveness. In the first, the wearied Igor Vovchanchyn, due for a lengthy vacation after appearing in every event save one since Pride 4, will test the resolve of the seemingly uninspired Valentijn Overeem. Then, Jeremy Horn makes his much-anticipated Pride debut in a tune-up with Akira "The Sacrificial Lamb" Shoji. As for Vanderlei Silva, the only drama enshrouding his bout with Alexander Otsuka is whether or not he can set a record for the quickest knockout in Pride history. Pride 18 Notes

From the event's promoter: RUMBLE IN THE ROCKIES Millennium Sport Fighting has just finished up negotiations with the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, Colorado. After eight years since the UFC introduced Colorado to reality fighting, the Fillmore will open their doors January 26th for the return of mixed martial arts, and host the "Rumble in the Rockies" produced by Derek Amato and Millennium Sport Fighting. This will be the fourth show to date produced by Derek Amato and Millennium Sport Fighting. The card is very appealing and should produce a great night of MMA action. The superfight will feature two time Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Brad Gumm against Benji Radach from Dennis "Superman" Hallman's camp out of Washington. Radach has made some noise recently as he continues to plow through opponents by knocking them out. This will be a very exciting match and we hope to increase the possibilities for both fighters to be recognized for advancement with other organizations. Eric Payne will also make his return to the ring after a short absence and will be the featured in the co-main event with an opponent to be announced. Local favorite Jake "Thunder" Hattan will be fighting in the feature 155 lb division. The event has twelve fights scheduled with a very strong possibility of adding one more fight to the card. Athletes competing will be: "Pretty Boy" Floyd Edwards, Brett "The Wreckin Ball" Shafer, York Ash, Joe Wilk, Danny Jung, Canada's Sheldon LaAbee, Marc-Andre Drolet, Chuck Parmelee, Lorn Estes, Ernest Bell, Ben Cross, Greg Loebel, Chris Guillian, Richard Rosas, Brett Adams, Charlie "The native warrior" Dearborn, Tony Zamorra, Grady Hurley, Paul Gardner, and Dustin "Mighty" Moe. NHB Fighting To Stay Legal In Sao Paulo By Eduardo Alonso After the terrible blow suffered by NHB in Brazil, with the sport's ban in Sao Paulo, most of the NHB community in the country is joining forces to change this scenario and get NHB back to the country's biggest city. On December 6th, the mayor of Sao Paulo, Mrs. Marta Suplicy, sanctioned a law, written by a councilman named Arselino Tatto, prohibiting any NHB event from being held in the city, therefore banning the sport from Brazil's biggest and most financially important city. This represented a huge step back for all the efforts the NHB community in Brazil has been making to improve the sport's image with the public. After reading the councilman's statements on the subject, in which he admitted never to have watched an NHB event in his life, every serious professional that is involved with the sport joined in a common cause: Get NHB back to legality in Sao Paulo. As a result of all these efforts, most of the media in Brazil started to talk about the subject on TV shows broadcast all over the country. With some help from FCF in Brazil, and counting on the prestige of people like Royler Gracie, Fabio Gurgel, Wallid Ismail and Jorge "Macaco" Patino, among others, the arbitrariness of this absurd decision was exposed to the public, and the councilman started to admit the possibility of meeting NHB representatives to discuss the law and further chances of the sport coming back to life in Sao Paulo. As life takes some funny turns, on December 20th, some rumors of corruption involving Mr. Arselino Tatto's name started to appear in the Brazilian press. The secrecy of the councilman's bank accounts has been suspended, and he is under investigation for alleged corruption charges brought by a former secretary of his. We hope that this situation will be cleared up as soon as possible, and our sport will not suffer any longer from this kind of reasonless acts made by people who don't belong with NHB. Check out the January issue of FCF for more on the situation. |
From the event's promoter: HOOKnSHOOT SETS SPOTLIGHT ON THE WOMEN OF MMA!!! HOOKnSHOOT "REVOLUTION" scheduled for April 13th, 2001 will be a very interesting event to say the least. The promotion is stepping into new territory with an all-women MMA event which will be the first of it's kind in United States. The formula has proven to be a hot commodity in Japan where the REMIX shows were visually successful but from all accounts paid their fighters more than they could handle and went out of business. Can a women's event survive in the MMA industry in the United States? Judy Neff, one of the top fighters in the United States, voiced her opinion before her fight at the HOOKnSHOOT November 17 show:
Many have mixed feelings about women and MMA. Many men who weren't too crazy about women in the sport got a tape of the REMIX event and changed their mind! "When you get the right athletes, you can't go wrong," said promoter Jeff Osborne. "I've shown the REMIX video to a ton of people and they're all captivated for some reason. Even people who care nothing about MMA watched it. I truly believe that this show will be a groundbreaking event for women," Osborne says. The top fighters have been contacted and many have committed. Erin Toughill (pro boxer/REMIX Superfight Champion), Jennifer Howe, Judy Neff, Marloes Conen (REMIX tournament champion), Becky Levi, Debi Purcell and even BJJ stars Leka Vieira and Erica Montoya have expressed their interests at being in this show that will "revolution"ize MMA. The show is also offering many newcomers a great opportunity to get in. Many fighters such as Shannon Hooper (Josh Barnett's girlfriend), Tara LaRosa, Jessica Ross and Shelby Walker (both have faced Judy Neff in HnS before), Betta Yeung (Superbrawl), a team of women from AMC Pankration are just to name a few. Those who are interested in this project can contact hooknshoot@aol.com. HnS says it will release a full lineup of names and matches down the road but with the event being over 4 months away, they don't want to jump the gun. |
ON WBAI'S "LIGHTSHOW" By Eddie Goldman Last week, on Dec. 20, we traveled to the Brighton Beach neighborhood in Brooklyn (by subway on the Q train -- how else?) to cover the International Fight Night 4. The main event, billed as the "Battle of Titans," featured two big pros fighters, Moti Horenstein and John Dixson, punching, kicking, and kneeing each other for the newly-created USKBA Muay Thai International Superheavyweight Championship. Moti emerged victorious, and today we hear from him about his plans in both kickboxing and mixed martial arts. We will also comment on the dispute and lawsuit between two of our previous guests, Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins and Lou DiBella. "Lightshow" airs weekly late Friday night/early Saturday morning, 3-5 AM Eastern Time. The "No Holds Barred News" segment usually airs in the second hour of the show, between 4 AM and 5 AM EST, early Saturday morning, December 29. This week's segment is prerecorded. WBAI broadcasts in New York on 99.5 FM. For those not in the New York area, WBAI can also be heard live on the Internet. There are two sites that stream the signal: http://www.wbai.org/ and http://www.2600.com/wbai. At this time broadcasts of "Lightshow" are not archived, but we are working on getting these audio interviews posted. |

By Eduardo Alonso The next edition of the MECA World Vale Tudo is shaping up to be the best ever! With less than a month until the event, promoter and Chute Boxe team coach, Rudimar Fedrigo shared some news about the event with us. In addition to the exciting match-ups announced earlier, yesterday he confirmed that none other than Shooto Champion and Chute Boxe's newest star Anderson Silva will be fighting at the event! Anderson, who in his last fight beat Japanese hero Hayato Sakurai, had some problems because of a contract signed with the UFC, however Rudimar assured FCF that Anderson will fight at the event, and he will face "Jucão", a Brazilian Top Team member! In another surprising announcement, Rudimar told FCF that Flavio Moura won't be fighting Jorge "Macaco" Patino anymore, and instead the UFC and IVC veteran will face none other than Ruas Vale Tudo team member and Rings veteran Gustavo "Ximu"! This promises to be a great fight, with Ximu being considered one of the top fighters on the Ruas Vale Tudo team and "Macaco" looking for a win to get him on the right track again. The event is confirmed for Thursday, January 24th, at the Circulo Militar, the same venue that held the previous editions of MECA, in Curitiba. The event will also feature two title fights, with Carlos Barreto fighting for the Heavyweight title, and current Pride sensation Murilo "Ninja" Rua fighting against "Navalhada" for the Middleweight title. MECA 6 will be broadcast live on Pay-Per-View in Brazil, and the full card will be released in early January! FCF will be there to cover all the action! |
