From the event's promoter: Two of the up-and-coming stars of the Miletich Martial Arts Center will headline this Saturday's Extreme Trials in Davenport, Iowa. Steve Rusk and Robbie Lawler, both winners at the Mixed Martial Arts Nationals this year, will compete in pro bouts in front of their home fans. [] Rusk, a former wrestling star at Illinois, is 2-0 as a pro and will face Brad Jones of Kansas City. Jones is an Extreme Challenge veteran and has fought the likes of Guy Mezger and Bobby Hoffman. [] Lawler, a 19-year-old former high school wrestling standout, will be making his professional debut against Travis Sapp, also from Kansas City. Sapp has a 2-1 pro record. The Extreme Trials features amateur competition in five weight divisions -- 150-under, 170-under, 190-under, 210-under and heavyweight. The winners of each of the Trials events qualify for the Nationals, which are scheduled for December. The winners of the Nationals receive pro contracts to compete in Super Brawl, Extreme Challenge and USWF. By Josh Gross This roller-coaster ride we've come to know and love, as mixed martial arts regulation just got very interesting. Months after California's jarring disappointment, a new light has shone upon the MMA landscape in the form of Larry Hazzard and the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. After UFC 30 in Atlantic City, Hazzard sent out a notice to all mixed martial arts promoters interested in running shows that there would be a meeting on April 3rd, 2001 in Trenton, NJ to discuss any and all concerns about regulation. The meeting has come and gone, and the fans of MMA should be extremely excited. What exactly did they do? Well, by implementing nine weight classes and keeping the majority of the rules that have thus far been used in MMA competition, the sport of mixed martial arts now has full-fledged regulation in one of the largest combative states in the United States. This is not the half of it. Hazzard, along with Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission Marc Ratner and several other regulatory bodies are looking into using the rules and regulations compiled on the 3rd as standardized rules for the sport. As a whole, the rules are practically identical to those the UFC and IFC have been running in New Jersey since September, 2000. The rules have been modified, notably the stoppage of knees on the ground, however these new rules don't reflect any major changes. The most significant are reshuffling of weight divisions and the prohibition of the use of shoes, shirt and gi for a fighter. Although the banning of shoes seems minor, many mixed martial arts fighters based in wrestling have grown accustomed to competing in shoes. In an effort to bring uniformity to the sport, Hazzard felt it was the best course of action. "One concern was of a hygienic nature," said Hazzard as he addressed the no-shoe rule in an interview on "No Holds Barred" with Eddie Goldman. "They felt like that there was less of a chance of debris from shoes being brought into the ring. The other concern was more of a safety issue in that it was felt that the shoes were an advantage over the bare feet in that you have the eyelets in the shoes and things of that nature. It was the consensus of the group that there would be no shoes." Combining the IFC's weight class system, based on the defunct California rules, and the UFC's; the nine divisions break down like this. Starting with the lightest category, the Flyweight category features fighters under 125lbs. Next is the Bantamweight division between 125-134.9. The Featherweights are next at 135-144.9. Until now these divisions were dormant in major U.S. promotions and appear likely to remain that way for some time. The new Lightweight division features the likes of Jens Pulver, Kaoru Uno, Din Thomas and many others between the weights of 145-154.9. Pat Miletich will defend his UFC Welterweight, yes welterweight, Championship at UFC 31 against Carlos Newton as the new division with fighters between 155-169.9lbs sees the light of day for the first time. This is where things get interesting. Many in the know felt that the former UFC Middleweight division, with fighters competing between 170-200lbs, needed to be cut in half. The new rules did that, possibly creating some amazing match-ups. The new Middleweight division, includes fighters between 170-184.9lbs, names such as Kazushi Sakuraba, Frank Shamrock, Dan Henderson, Jose "Pele" Landi-Johns, Dave Menne and many others would fall into this category. The possibilities are endless. The top-half of the division isn't shabby either. Tito Ortiz, Vanderlei Silva, Kevin Randleman and many more won't have to worry about making 199lbs anymore because the new Light-Heavyweight division includes any fighter 185-204.9lbs. The heavyweights will have a lot of room to play as any fighter from 205-264.9lbs can battle it out. Finally, the really big boys get to tangle in the Super-Heavyweight division above 265lbs. Talk is boxing will gain its own Super-Heavyweight class in the near future. The three-hour meeting went smoothly save discussions on the no-shoe rule and the Super-Heavyweight class. The mixed martial arts promoters on hand, particularly the UFC, are extremely happy with the outcome. "It turned out better than we thought it was going to," said the President of the UFC, Dana White. "We went in there nervous about a lot of things. Maybe they were going to try and take slams out. Who knows what they were going to do. You know what, they were so open minded." Slams didn't concern Hazzard, or the other commissioners, but "spiking" did. There haven't been many cases of "spiking", where one fighter drops or throws his opponent directly on top of his head, yet according to White that was the regulators' main concern. Like in amateur wrestling, "spiking" is now illegal and any flagrant foul will result in an immediate disqualification. During discussions with the California State Athletic Commission, the gloves worn by fighters became a major sticking point. The IFC developed a gel-based 10oz. glove that delivered quite an impact. The New Jersey rules make concessions for gloves ranging between 4-10oz. Each promotion will decide on what gloves and which weight to use. Despite the close similarities in rules between the IFC, UFC, King Of The Cage, Pride and many other promotions, differences remain. It is the hope of many involved that all promotions, particularly in the U.S., will adopt the 'new' Jersey rules. "I hope everybody uses these rules," White said from Las Vegas. "That's what we really have to count on. The reality is, the way this sport has been in the past was like, 'this is my sandbox and I don't want anyone else playing in it.' The way everybody needs to see it now is all the promoters need to work together to make sure this thing doesn't die." The Athletic Commissions across the U.S. have a parallel struggle. Hazzard was instrumental in the Association of Boxing Commissions' rules regarding uniform regulations in championship boxing bouts. It remains to be seen if he can pull it off in mixed martial arts, but it's good to know someone is trying and his efforts haven't gone unnoticed. Hazzard is not alone in his battle to legitimize MMA. There are many others, including Ratner, who could play increasingly important roles in the year to come. While these rules are a major step forward, we must remember the setback in California. It doesn't appear like that type of disappointment can happen again, but in the wacky world of mixed martial arts you never know. |

you probably won't land any other punches- The better your competition, the harder it is to land a punch. Quality fighters have incredible timing and distancing. Trying to connect with one jab at a time is not probable. However, multiple jabs are an effective means for closing distance, setting up combinations, and neutralizing counter punches from your opponent. * Closing distance During competition, most fighters move around at a safe distance from one another. That distance is generally more than one step apart. Closing distance and generating power in a single jab is accomplished by stepping forward during the extension of the punch. That single step will usually leave you short of striking range. In order to generate power with a double jab you must take a short step forward during the extension of each jab, closing twice the distance of a single jab. Executing a triple jab means taking three short steps forward. The double and triple jabs track down your opponent because you can move forward faster than your opponent can move backwards. That is the nature of human mechanics and the reason 100-meter sprinters don't race backwards. * Setting up combinations You should not move forward unless you are punching your way forward. Any other forward movement would result in a series of punches, kicks, and knees banging off your jaw. The first few jabs you throw may not reach the target but they clear a safe path for your advance. Most fighters do not punch while you are punching. They usually focus on their defense and wait for you to finish your assault before they begin to counter. When you have successfully closed the gap between you and your opponent, you will begin to land your jab. Once you have established your jab, your combination punching will follow. Your combinations will be based on your opponent's reactions to the multiple jabs. If your opponent constantly dips, you know to aim low in order to strike the desired target. * Neutralize counter punches A single jab is easily countered by a straight rear punch. As you throw your jab your opponent could redirect it with his fingertips and counter punch or simply follow your jab back with a power punch. Multiple jabs prevent that because it throws off your opponent's timing. Which jab do they follow back? If they follow too soon, they may walk into your jab or a power punch. The following five pictures illustrate proper execution of the double jab. If the jab were tripled, you would repeat steps four and five. The power in the jab is gained through the rotation of the forearm as well as the forward advance. | |||

By Elton Sasaki The 7th Pan-American tournament of Jiu-Jitsu took place in Kissimmee, Florida, on April 7-8. In Alexandre Ribeiro's first tournament as a black belt, he won the Absolute Black Belt Division and got 3rd in the Middle-heavyweight. He earned the black belt last month from his brother, Saulo Ribeiro, when he won the Arnold World Gracie Championships after beating Cacareco in the finals by several points. Fernando "Margarida" Pontes won the Heavyweight Division by tapping all his opponents. In the finals he submitted Fabio Gurgel with a choke. Margarida is the first person to ever submit Gurgel in a tournament. Garth Taylor, brown belt jiu-jitsu world champion--now as a black belt--took 2nd in the final against Jorge Patino "Macaco" in a close difference of points. From the event's promoter: THE NEW BEGINNING DAVENPORT, Iowa -- For years, Steve Rusk has been hidden in the shadows at the Miletich Martial Arts Center. The former collegiate wrestling star plays a major role in preparing other fighters for MMA success, but has not sought exposure in the ring himself. On Saturday, he got to show his hometown fans that he also has the skills to compete at a high level like his Miletich teammates. Rusk defeated NHB veteran Dennis Reed in the main event of the Extreme Challenge Trials at Stars & Stripes nightclub. Reed, who has more than 50 pro bouts and is a former JUCO National wrestling champ, tapped from punches at 3:39 of the first round. Rusk won three state wrestling titles and went on to be a national runnerup at Augustana College in Div. III before competing his final three years for the University of Illinois. The other pro bout featured Robbie Lawler, a 19-year-old making his pro debut after winning the U.S. MMA National Championship earlier this year. Lawler, an accomplished wrestler with heavy hands, defeated John Reed by TKO at 2:14 of the opening round. The amateur portion of the event determined berths to the 2001 MMA Nationals. Winners in each division qualified for the Nationals, which will be held in Springfield, Ill., at the end of the year. The results: 150-under Semifinals: Johnathan McGarry def. Phil Baroni, a wrestler/boxer who fought a preliminary bout at UFC XXX, won the Absolute Division at this weekend's Ground Control Classic in North Bergen, NJ. Baroni won his two matches in the Advanced Light-heavyweight Division. After winning his weight division, Baroni went on to win all four of his matches in the Absolute Division, three by submission.Baroni recently competed in the Toughman World Championships, losing a controversial decision in the semi-finals after reportedly knocking his opponent down three times in the first round--with the "three knockdown rule" in effect, the fight should have been stopped and given to Baroni at that point. The loss of the potential $50,000 in the Toughman had Baroni bristling..."I got so pissed off and irritated that I got jerked out of 50 large that I wanted to beat some guys up and tap them out, so that's exactly what I did. 4 up, 4 down. Not to mention the 2 guys that I beat up in my weight division on the way to the absolute." Matt, Renzo Gracie's first American black belt, is currently over in Abu Dhabi competing in the ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championship. In addition to competing with some of the best submission fighters in the world at ADCC, Matt is making his big time debut in MMA. This has been a long time coming, he's paid his dues along the way in the local shows and now, after a number of disappointments with proposed fights in the WEF & Pride, he is set to face Shonie Carter in UFC 31 on May 4th in Atlantic City. I spoke to Matt before he left for Abu Dhabi and asked him about his upcoming bout against Shonie... I'm psyched bro! This is the big show...especially now with the new owners, the show is looking like it's gonna be the best show out there, you know? So I'm really psyched...I'm just looking forward to fighting...I really love to fight. But this will be my first time in the Octagon...this is really where it all started, as far as in the U.S. The UFC is the biggest thing, people who know nothing about martial arts...you bring up other events, they won't know what the hell you're talking about, but if you say "the Ultimate Fighting Championships," they know exactly what you're talking about. It is the World Series of Mixed Martial Arts, and it better get ready for Matty S.! 
I'm real happy that my first time in a big show, Ricardo [Almeida] is fighting on there also...we're training together for it; even when we were over with Renzo in Japan we were up at 6 in the morning training, hitting the pads, working out. So it's great that a real good friend of mine, a brother from the academy is fighting the same day as me.
I see it being a good fight, a tough fight. I definitely respect the guy; I think he's tough and got a lot of experience. He looks like a good striker and looks difficult to get down, so that makes it pretty entertaining. So hopefully--because he's got a lot of experience and he's fought a lot of tough guys, I don't think he's gonna be intimidated--
he'll come in and try to bang with me. That way we'll both meet, because we're both gonna go forward...that way it will be a real nice fight, 'cause I hope I don't have to chase him. I like to fight aggressively, whether it's trying to take the guy down or punching and kicking, I plan on I going forward. I don't go for judges' decisions. I don't think this is gonna go the time limit, either he works on knocking me out or I work on taking him out by submission or otherwise. |

From the event's promoter: Highlights Minnesota Trials BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Sean Sherk, who scored a convincing win in his UFC debut two months ago, is the feature fighter at the Minnesota Trials on Friday at the Knights of Columbus hall. Sherk, who beat Tiki Gholson in the UFC, is from Oak Grove, Minn., and has an 11-0 record in NHB competition. He will face Extreme Challenge veteran Brian Dunn of Omaha, who has a 25-3 record, including wins over UFC fighters LaVerne Clark and Travis Fulton. Another feature bout on the card pits Greg Wikan, a RINGS USA veteran, against Ron Rumpf of RSF fame in a heavyweight bout. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the first bout is set for 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door or call Brad Kohler at 651 489-0921. The Minnesota Amateur is a qualifying event for the U.S. MMA Nationals, which are scheduled at the end of the year. After listening to the initial statements of evidence by attorney Robert P. Fitzsimmons and Assistant Attorney General, Robert Williams, Judge Paul Zakaib strongly suggested that the State Athletic Commission reconsider their entire lawsuit. The commission recessed and agreed to withdraw all proceedings against the promoter and World Extreme Fighting. Pride-13 And Beyond by Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com 
After Dan Henderson's tremendous performance at the King of Kings, he ran into a freight train by the name of Vanderlei Silva. That was one of the most exciting fights that I have seen. For Pride 13, Henderson came back and tried his hand against the most active Gracie in NHB, Renzo Gracie. Henderson won by knocking Renzo out as he shot in. I caught up with Dan to ask him about that fight, his previous fight with Vanderlei and who is he training with. You will be surprised!FCF: There were high expectations for your fight with Renzo Gracie at Pride 13. How did you feel going into the fight? Dan Henderson: I felt real comfortable and real confident in my abilities to beat him. I was real interested in how our stand-up skills matched up with each other. I felt that his strengths were submissions on the ground, where mine are in the clinch and the takedown. I felt that I was a lot better striker than him. That is kind of how we matched up. FCF: What was your strategy? DH: Pretty much exactly how the fight went. Not often when you actually get out there in competition do things happen exactly how you plan them. This time it did. It almost went to a tee on how we practiced. We thought that he would kick me once, maybe twice, and hit me a little bit. Then come after me and go to put me in his guard. I would control him, let him up and hit him on the way in. That's exactly what happened. FCF: Were you surprised at the way it ended? DH: A little bit. I felt that if I were to knock him out, it would be standing up and not when he was shooting in. I tried to hit him once or twice on his rear end while he was coming in the times before that when he shot. I was a little surprised that after I hit him he went limp. It kind of surprised me a little bit, but I was able to follow up with another shot. I hit him with a right hand, a right hook. My hand is still sore a little bit from that. I hit him pretty square. I felt my hand sink in a little bit. FCF: You had a tough, but exciting fight with Vanderlei Silva previously. Can you tell us about that fight? Both of you had the upper hand at one point or another. DH: Yeah, and I guess looking back that hindsight is 20-20. I kind of made a mistake and kind of fell down to the ground when I should have just pushed him away and kept striking and the fight could have been finished right then and there. But I fell down to the ground and allowed him to cover up and the ref stopped it and that helped him recover a little bit. I definitely have to hand it to him recovering after that. He came back well and showed a lot of heart. 
FCF: Were you surprised by Silva in that fight?DH: No. I wasn't surprised. I heard that he hits hard and now I KNOW that he hits hard. I just wasn't in the condition that I should have been for that fight. I didn't give myself the proper time to prepare and went ahead and fought anyway. I guess that's part of the game. FCF: You seemed to be comfortable enough fighting on your back to roll to the guard numerous times during that fight. Was it because you trained a little too much on your back, or was it a strategy to avoid Silva's knees? DH: No, that wasn't part of the game plan at all. I didn't train specifically to do that. It's good for me to train on my back as well as to train up on top. I don't limit myself to just training on top because I think that I will be on top every fight. It wasn't the case in that fight. I just ran out of gas and couldn't take him down because I was too tired. He had decent defenses. FCF: At first, when I saw the fight, I thought that maybe you just trained a little too much on your back. But when I watched the fight later, it occurred to me that you may be doing that to avoid taking some knees when you are trying to get back to your feet? DH: When I couldn't take him down, I kind of did that just to avoid getting hit. I wasn't about to sit there on my hands and my knees and get hit. I would have rather have been on top, let's put it that way. That's where I should have been. My game plan was to get into the clinch and just take him down. And I kind of didn't do either one. FCF: After that fight, you said that you were only going to fight a few more times. Last time we talked you mentioned this. How many more fights are you planning on taking? Did you set a limit? 
DH: Well, I will probably fight for another year or two years. And that's probably somewhere between 4-6 fights. I would at least give myself four fights. That would put me at about 15 total fights in my career. And after that I am ready to do other things with my life. The money is definitely helping. Obviously if the money got better, I might stay in it a lot longer. It's got to be a little bit more worth it for me to put everything else on hold.FCF: What were you planning on doing after retiring? DH: I am working on getting my contractor's license and start building houses and stuff. Things of that nature. FCF: What happened to the gym? Is it still open? Someone told me that it closed and another person told me that it moved. DH: Well, a little bit of both. I moved out of Oregon away from Randy [Couture], but I still go up there to help him prepare for his fights. We closed down the health club part of the gym and moved the wrestling and fighting portion of it to different location. FCF: So you're no longer in Oregon? DH: No, I'm no longer in Oregon. I am actually going to be building a house in the summer in California. FCF: Do you guys still train regularly with each other or do you guys just help each other right before the fight is coming up? DH: We train right before the fights. I'm going up for about 10 days to help him train for this fight. And he came down for about five or six days for my fight. FCF: How is Randy looking for this fight? DH: Well, the last time he came down to train with me, he was in real good shape. And he's been training harder, so I think he is going to look real good. We're going to watch some video, that is what we usually do, and we both come up with a game plan of what we both think is the best plan for each other's fights and go from there. But conditioning is the first thing and a game plan would be the second, I guess. FCF: Who is up next for you? Have any opponents been named? DH: No, no idea. I am supposed to be given a few names this week for the next Pride. Depending on who it is and who I want to fight, I may want a little more time to prepare. The next Pride is on May 27th and like I said I'm building a house in the summer, so I may not fight again until November. If I fight again soon, it will probably be in the next Pride, if not then it will have to be in November. FCF: Is there anybody on Dan Henderson's hit list that you would like to test yourself against? DH: I wouldn't mind fighting Rickson Gracie, but I don't think that would ever be pulled off. I wouldn't mind fighting Sakuraba as well. He is still tough, even though he just lost. Vanderlei is a tough opponent as well. FCF: How do you feel about the new rules in Pride? It really turned everything upside down in this past Pride with Sakuraba losing. DH: I didn't think that Sakuraba was an upset. I thought that would have happened. With or without the new rules. FCF: Do you feel that the new rules favor your style? DH: Yes, I think so. It depends on who I'm fighting and how our styles match up, but for the most part, the more and more my stand-up skills improve, the more and more that rule favors me. That will probably mean that more guys will be shooting in on me to try and take me down and be in that position. FCF: So you are looking for your opponents to be on all fours and deliver some knees? DH: Yeah. I was really surprised that they put that rule in effect right before Sakuraba fought Vanderlei. FCF: Yeah, it seems to work perfectly into Vanderlei's game. DH: Absolutely, especially against Sakuraba, who is comfortable in that position, on all fours. He really didn't have a place to really hang out. I don't think that he appreciated that. FCF: Anything else that you would like to add? Like who you are training with or any up and comers? DH: I have mainly been training with Fabiano Iha and Tito Ortiz before my last fight and now for a few days. I have been friends with Tito for years and I lived in Huntington for a while before moving up to Oregon. I have trained with him before and when I moved back I went in to train with him again. Tito improved a lot as a wrestler. We've known each other's points of view as far strategies. I think it was really good for both of us, especially for me because I got the royal treatment this time and I am going to return the favor and help him out in his next fight. |

Kanehara, who already lost to two Top Team members (Mario Sperry and Minotauro Nogueira), will now test his skills against the current grappling sensation in the world of mixed martial arts. PHOENIX - Mixed martial arts has battled politicians, the cable industry and ignorance on its long arduous road to legitimacy. Evidently, Mother Nature isn't a fan either. For the second time in three months an outdoor MMA show was severely impacted by rain and cold weather. Unlike the wet and wild King of the Cage 7 experience, Bushido organizer Frank Shamrock quickly dispelled any thoughts of fighting outside in the rain.As the countdown to fight time began, Shamrock addressed the hundreds of fans that had been allowed to congregate in the fighters' warm up area in an effort to avoid the heavy downpour. Promising their money's worth, Shamrock set up an indoor submission-wrestling event. Not only was the idea brilliant, it provided enough time for the first rain to subside. 
It appeared that the respite from the rain would save the evening and one fight did go down - Gerald Torre won by arm-bar. However, soon the rain came down harder than before and for the second time, the show was moved indoors. That's where it stayed the rest of the night. Many of the fighters scheduled on the card put on excellent submission grappling matches for the crowded room of faithful MMA followers.In the end, the results weren't tallied and they really didn't matter. What mattered was the fans on hand saw some good submission wrestling - probably something most had never seen before. Shamrock took lemons and made lemonade as he educated the audience on hand in the basics of submission. 
The crowd also witnessed Sanshou star Cung Le demonstrate why he is the #1 competitor in his sport as he tossed around Rudy Ott to the delight of the crowd. Also, Shamrock and "Crazy" Bob Cook graced the mat in a final display of submission wrestling. The action was fast and furious drawing "oohs" and "ahs" from the half soaked audience.Hats off to Shamrock for making a really bad night enjoyable. Who knew it rained in the desert? |

Randy Couture has definitely left his mark on the UFC, where it seems he can do no wrong. He has beaten champions previously thought to be invincible. On May 4th, he will test himself against The Rock, Pedro Rizzo, the protégé of Marco Ruas. The only man to take Rizzo out has been another wrestler, who just happens to be fighting on the same card, Kevin Randleman. However, Couture's style is much different than Randleman's, so this fight definitely cannot be taken as a gimme for Couture. Couture has recently gone through some changes for the better, as seen in the article "Retired & Rewired," which is featured in the current issue of Full Contact Fighter. Couture's new manager, Battle Management, looks to make a name for itself, better yet, a name for its clients. Battle Management has secured management contracts with none other than, Mark "The Hammer" Coleman, "The Monster," Kevin Randleman, rising star, Matt Lindland, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Wallid Ismael, and the instructor of Couture's opponent, Marco Ruas.With this kind of talent under one roof, Battle Management has more leverage to negotiate better contracts and terms for its fighters. Couture believes that they will help bring the sport into the mainstream and solidify MMA as a true sport. This hopes to be accomplished by holding MMA events in larger venues and drawing bigger crowds, promoting the athletes, and by educating the public. Sure these fighters will get better paydays, but what does that mean for all the other fighters you ask? It means that as the sport grows, the level of financial compensation for everyone will also grow. More legitimate events will be allowed to flourish and be run with the safety of the fighters in mind, while making a decent profit. Couture strongly believes that the UFC's new management will be one of the driving forces behind this and he is more than happy to be at the forefront, defending the UFC's heavyweight championship. Most hardcore fans believe that this sport will take off eventually, but the answer is when? Couture sees big changes in the next couple years and he is planning on being ready and on the ground floor for this move. Just look at the support received in Atlantic City, we are on our way! Couture chuckled when I asked him for his strategy against Rizzo saying, "it's a little too early for that right now." But he did mention that Dan Henderson is training with him already. He also mentioned that Mark Coleman and Kevin Randleman came in on Sunday to train with the group. This confirmed the rumors that Coleman and Couture are helping each other out, as was seen when Couture worked out with Coleman before Pride 13. Couture added that the fighters under the Battle Management team are there to help each other. Couture denied that this would be another rAw team or Hammer House group, consisting only of wrestlers. They were all friends and are helping each other out. Imagine the training sessions with Couture, Coleman, Randleman, Henderson, and Lindland all in the same room, with the exception of Lindland, who is an Olympic silver medallist, everyone was or is, a UFC champion. The next big question that I asked was if there is a conflict of interest concerning this fight because Couture and the instructor of Rizzo, Marco Ruas, are under the same management? Couture responded by saying, "this is a sport and we are just competing against each other." Who can argue with that? To wrap things up, in my interview with Dan Henderson, Henderson mentioned that he is planning on fighting for only a couple more years. I asked Randy about his long-term plans. He responded by saying, "on June 22, I am going to be 38 years old. I plan on fighting for at least two years, but we will see. Right now, I enjoy learning and competing." And boy do we enjoy seeing him compete. |

Brazilian NHB fighter, and Pride sensation Vanderlei Silva just made his catwalk debut yesterday in Curitiba. Vanderlei appeared in a big event held in his home city of Curitiba, wearing Levi's clothes and sharing the stage with many Brazilian celebrities. The reaction for Vanderlei's appearence was great, and he was already invited to showcase Levi's summer collection here in Brazil in the near future.The "Axe Murderer", as Vanderlei is known, told FCF that he was very happy with the invitation, and that he hopes that now NHB fighters will finally reach the mainstream in Brazil. Boxing Takes A Back Seat... For Now By Eduardo Alonso Vitor just told FCF that although he was set to make his pro boxing debut in las Vegas next month, he says is going to fight in Pride on May 27th, so he had to cancel his boxing match. Belfort is still looking for some boxing matches in the future, but for now he is focused on NHB again, and doesn't want to risk an injury before Pride. His opponent in Pride is yet to be named, but Vitor is already training hard.

Promoter Scott Coker knew exactly what he was doing when he decided to take on the task of bringing Japan's K-1 mixed martial arts tournament to the United States. After making a splash debut in the American martial arts scene last year, Coker's K-1 USA Championship tournament is set to kick off in its second year on Saturday, May 5th at Las Vegas, Nevada's Mirage Hotel."We have a much better group of fighters this year compared to last year-all the big names in the sport in North America," says Coker. One of those big names, veteran Muay Thai kickboxer Maurice Smith, acknowledges the high caliber of talent present in this year's tournament draw. "There's no telling who's going to win. It's a good lineup and it's going to be a pretty hard tournament," says Smith who reigned as World Kickboxing Association (W.K.A.) World Heavyweight Muay Thai champion from 1993-1997. A stand-up fighting tournament, the K-1 permits its fighters to utilize punches, kicks, and knees. Because its rules are designed to allow fighters of various disciplines to compete, the tournament effectively breaks down all barriers amongst these styles and gathers the best fighters from each martial art into one ring to determine one champion. Fusing a number of arts that begin with the letter "K" such as karate, kung-fu, and kickboxing into one sport, the tournament was named K-1 in 1993 by founder and president of the K-1 Corporation, Master Kazuyoshi Ishii of Japan. "It's the most amazing show that I have ever seen in person. It's circus olé and the super bowl combined into one night. Add the best fighters in the world and you have the K-1," says Coker of the event. The USA Championship tournament consists of eight fighters divided into two brackets of two bouts. Each fight in each round of the single-elimination tournament is scheduled for three, 3-minute rounds. Fighters advance to subsequent rounds of the draw by winning their bout either via knockout or judges' decision. The winner of the May 5th event will receive an automatic entry into the K-1 USA Semifinal tournament, which will be held in August. The winner of the August event receives an entry into Ishii's prominent K-1 World Grand Prix Finals tournament which is held annually in December at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. This year's USA Championship tournament draw is structured as follows: In one bracket, former International Kickboxing Federation (I.K.F.) world heavyweight Muay Thai champion Jeff "Duke" Roufus of Milwaukee, Wisconsin will face last year's K-1 USA Championship runner-up, Thomasz Kucharzewski of Ontario, Canada. "[Roufus] is a good fighter, but I don't think I will have a problem [winning]," says Kucharzewski, who feels that he is better prepared for this year's competition. "I started working out early and I feel good." "[Kucharzewski] is a great fighter. I know I've got my hands full," admits Roufus, who has bulked up his frame from 210 to 225 lbs. for the tournament in order to better absorb the strong blows of the tournament's heavy strikers. "I'm there to win. I've done well in big fights," he continues. A highly anticipated rematch between Muay Thai kickboxers Jean Claude Leuyer of San Francisco, California and Paul LaLonde of Surrey, British Columbia will round off the first bracket of the draw. After Leuyer floored his underdog opponent during their bout in the first round of last year's tournament, LaLonde was surprisingly able to regroup immediately and dramatically turn the fight around by landing a flurry of punches that knocked out Leuyer in the second round of the bout. "That is the beauty of heavyweight fighting," LaLonde says. "When you put two 200 lb. plus fighters in the same ring, it only takes one hit to determine the outcome of the fight," he continues. After knocking LaLonde down during last year's bout, Leuyer claims that he became confused as he thought the referee was going to stop the fight. "The count was very long and then I watched the ref help him up," says the International Sport Karate Association (I.S.K.A.) World Freestyle Rules champion. "It was my mistake and I won't do it again." In anticipation of the rematch, Leuyer says that he has stepped up the intensity level of his training, placing heavy emphasis on sprinting, pad work, and sparring. With a newfound sense of confidence under his belt after pulling off last year's first round upset, LaLonde vows to come out more aggressively from the start this year. "I think that I gave [Leuyer] too much respect in our last bout. I am not saying that he does not deserve respect. I think that Jean Claude is a great fighter, but he can be beaten," he insists. 
On the opposite end of the draw, Smith is scheduled to take on K-1 newcomer Pedro Fernandez of Tijuana, Mexico while Seido kai kan karate practitioner Michael McDonald of Vancouver, Canada will square off against kickboxer Guenter Singer of Los Angeles, California via Austria.At 39 years of age, Smith admits that he is not the same fighter as he was when he was younger, but is still recognized by officials and other experts as one of the most respected fighters in the sport of kickboxing and one of the favorites to win the event. [Photo of Mo Smith courtesy of K-1 Japan] "I am thrilled to be fighting [Smith] because he was my idol growing up and to now face him shows me how far I've come," says Fernandez. The Mexican fighter, who is skilled in Kenpo karate and competes as both a professional boxer and Muay Thai kickboxer, feels that he has what it takes to defeat his favored opponent. "I predict that I will either stop Maurice in the first round or win a 3-round decision. [He is] very ring savvy, but also ring-worn," claims Fernandez. Last year's K-1 USA Grand Prix tournament boasted a 100% knockout rate, marking the first time in the history of the K-1 that the outcome of every bout was decided with a knockout. "All the fighters came out blazing and the best man was left standing," says Coker. According to Roufus, fighters tend to come out more aggressively in the K-1 in order to score quick knockouts and preserve their energy for the remainder of the tournament. "You're fighting as many as three fights in one night, so you're going for the knockout," he says. He adds that he has increased the level of aggressiveness in his training regimen to accommodate this style of fighting. Roufus notes that the traditionally high knockout rate of the tournament is one factor that makes the event attractive to fans. "People want to see the fast paced, big swinging, coming to get you type style [of fighting]," he says. "K-1 could be big in North America. Everybody loves a good fight and everybody understands a tournament format," says Coker who, along with partner Mike Sawyer, became the owners of the first American production company to obtain United States television coverage of Muay Thai shows held in Thailand's prestigious Lumpini Stadium when they brought ESPN there in 1997. "Most of my time in 2001 will be devoted to producing K-1 events. We have a plan to expand and it's probably going to take two years to implement," he says. The American promoter's expansion plans for the tournament include holding K-1 regional qualifying tournaments in select major cities throughout the United States next year. Such regional events would give professional super-heavyweight fighters in each region of the country the opportunity to qualify for the K-1 USA Championship tournament while they could also increase the notoriety of the K-1 as an entity. Coker, who began his career in kickboxing promotions in 1985, became involved with the K-1 when he was invited to meet with Ishii and his K-1 Corporation colleagues last April. The corporation, which has seen the popularity of its brainchild soar to extraordinary heights over the last nine years in its native Japan, subsequently hired Coker to promote a K-1 tournament in the United States that would give North American fighters the opportunity to qualify for their K-1 World Grand Prix Finals tournament. "Master Ishii is truly a promoter with great vision," says Coker. "Look what he's accomplished in less than ten years. I respect him for what he's done for martial arts and for what his goals are for the future." |

There's always something incredibly fun about watching smaller guys excel against larger competitors. In the early days of mixed martial arts it was not uncommon to see two men-despite a 50lb or more weight difference-square off. Those days are gone because in a sport where the skill level has risen so quickly, even 10lbs can make a difference.King of the Cage Middleweight Champion Joe Hurley has had to deal with being the smaller man since he first started taking money to fight. "I've always liked fighting," he told Full Contact Fighter after a training session at the Lions Den in Chula Vista, California. "I've fought for money since I was 13 years old, and I fought 20-year-olds. I got kicked out of high school for fighting. It's not something I'm proud of.". After a tumultuous childhood, Hurley joined the Lions Den in Napa, California at the age of 16 and began his training-not only in the fighting arts, but in the art of life. Perhaps his greatest lesson came three years ago in Abu Dhabi when his arm was on the wrong side of a Fabiano Iha arm-bar.. The injury came at a bad time for the youngest active fighter in the Lions Den stable. "When I went to Abu Dhabi back in 1998, my girlfriend at the time was six-months pregnant," he said. "I got my arm broken really bad, and it was just hard to do anything. Losing with the baby on the way made me look at it and say, 'If I'm going to fight, I have to do it and learn everything.' I put the pedal to the metal.". His newfound commitment, both as a father and as a fighter, has begun to pay off. Tomorrow, at the Colusa Casino in Williams, California, Hurley puts his belt on the line for the second time since earning the title with a KO victory over Chris Brennan last September. Once again, the man hoping to take away Hurley's title will be bigger.. "I'll fight anybody," when asked about his upcoming opponent, Gil Castillo. "I'd really rather not fight big guys. I hate fighting in the 175-180lb weight class when I'm a buck-sixty, but I'm just going to take whomever they throw at me.". "I think everyone always puts me as an underdog. I love making people shut up, I really do. I don't talk trash. I'm nice to everyone, but I do my talking in the ring.". The response by Hurley's opponents has always been the same after stepping into the ring with him. He's any combination of stronger, faster, more skilled and/or harder puncher than his appearance would lend itself to believe. The word is getting out, and it's doubtful whether people will be surprised by any of these attributes anymore.. "Conditioning," he quickly answered when asked what he believes his best physical attribute is. "I have decent power, but the main thing about me is I don't stop. I keep going always pressing no matter what. After 10 minutes my opponents are thinking, 'man it's been 10 minutes, the second round is over and he's not stopping.'". It's this sense of constant pressure that has confounded Hurley's opponents and aided in an unblemished 11-0 record. Yet, his ultimate drive during the fight can be traced back to that day in Abu Dhabi when his arm snapped. The commitment to himself and his daughter is the thing with Hurley.. "I think that's what really motivated me," he said when asked about nearly two-year-old daughter Morgan. "For all my fights in the past I've worked a full-time job. At some points, like when I fought Scott Bills, I was working 80 hours a week. I watch my daughter in the mornings and her mother watches her at night when I train. I busted my ass and it's really because my daughter is my motivation.". Through the commitment to his fight game, the injury also helped completely morph Hurley as a fighter. "It was a real lesson," he stated as he played with the once mangled limb. "I started boxing because I couldn't wrestle and post on my arm anymore. Actually, it's a good thing that it happened because it made me look at arm-bars closely. I was a leg lock freak back then, and it made me go and become good at all this jiu-jitsu stuff.". The last several weeks, Hurley has returned to his Mecca-Lions Den San Diego. Home to Lions Den captain Ken Shamrock, fighters are now required to train in the Southern California facility the weeks leading up to a scheduled fight.. "I think it's good," said Hurley about the time spent in sunny San Diego. "It's really hard leaving my daughter behind. It's a necessity, and I'm learning things down here that I'm not learning up in Napa. Now, I'm down here and I'm training with Miguel Reyes and I'm learning a lot about Thai boxing and how to clinch effectively. Now I have technique on top of the will.". Hurley has already proven his heart and skill in the ring. Another defense of his title tomorrow at KOTC 8, and his name will start to be uttered among the top fighters in his weight class.. "I want everyone to know that I'm coming," the 22-year-old champion said with conviction. "People are going to start looking at me, and like everyone else I have my holes. I'm getting better, so is everyone else. I'm not unbeatable, no one is, but I'm coming and I won't stop." |

Hurley loses for the first time By Josh Gross 
WILLIAMS, CALIF. - It came down to the judges Sunday night as two awarded Vernon "Tiger" White with a majority decision against Marvin Eastman. A third judge ruled the fight a draw despite what many felt was a close fight in Eastman’s favor. The stand up fighting was extremely close and White controlled the submission game. In the end White retained his King of the Cage Light-Heavyweight title and ran his record to 8-4.White’s teammate, Joe Hurley, saw a unanimous decision go against him as Gil Castillo became the new KOTC Middleweight Champion. Castillo, 15-0, controlled the fight from the ground, mounting Hurley in the second round. The loss marked the first in Hurley’s career as he fell to 11-1. Sean Sherk destroyed Martin Armandarez in an amazing display of ground and pound. Sherk dominated the takedowns and Armandarez could do little but lie on his back and eat punches. Referee Larry Landless stopped the contest 2:07 into the third round. Other results:

By Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com Warrior of the New Millennium III Lahaina Civic Center, Maui, Hawaii Saturday, May 12th, 2001 Rickson Gracie black belt, Romolo Barros and his partner, Lee Theros are putting together their third installment of the only mixed martial arts event on the beautiful island of Maui. I say "putting together" because they still have a few open slots for any interested fighters. Fighters can email Lee at Mauibadboy@aol.com if you are interested, but you better let them know as soon as possible, the event is coming up quickly. The fighters that are slated to compete are; local workhorse, Augie Padaken, up and comer, Kim Morishita (BJJ purple belt under Barros), and the always unorthodox, Jay R. Palmer. HMC’s Haru Shiminishi will also bring some of his fighters to test themselves. Joe Moreira student, Ricardo Barros (BJJ brown belt), who had tough match against Hawaii’s Niko Vitale in the last Warrior’s event, will also return. Warriors is not only for the "pro’s," the promoters want to give amateurs a chance to gain experience, so there will also be some amateur bouts. The event is featuring three tournaments and three super fights. The weight classes for the tournaments are as follows: 3 NHB Tournaments 160lbs and under 161-190lbs 191lbs and over Come out and support NHB if you are in Maui.
