From the event's promoter Kipp Kollar:
NAGA RESULTS
Orlando, FL-On January 27, 2001, the North American Grappling Association took some pointers from the migrating birds of New England and flew south for some old fashioned Florida fightin'. The NAGA joined forces with World Extreme Fighting Promoter, Jamie Levine, and hosted the Sunshine State Submission Championship near the world capital of family entertainment, DisneyWorld. The tournament was the NAGA's first foray into the Deep South and competition proved to be fierce and entertaining.

The competition also marked another first for the NAGA-traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rules for the Gi divisions. Historically the NAGA has preferred to use its own, well-established submission rules over the BJJ rules. But after considering a great deal of feedback from NAGA members who prefer the BJJ rules, the NAGA decided to break from the norm and honor the fighters' requests.

Just under 150 fighters from as far as Massachusetts traveled to Florida top compete. Here are the results:

ADULT TEAM CHAMPIONS:
1st Place Team Marcio Simas - 69 Points
2nd Place Team Popovitch - 45 Points
3rd Place Team Renzo Gracie - 42 Points
4th Place Team Relson Gracie (Jax) - 39 Points

KIDS TEAM CHAMPIONS:
1st Place Tiger Schulmann's Karate
2nd Place Performance Jiu-Jitsu
3rd Place Tong Dragon
4th Place Avellan Grappling

Other tremendous team efforts included Team Avellan, Team Tampa, Team Manimal, Team Savannah Goshinbudo, Florida Fight Team, Team Internal Power, Team Conan & JBA!

MOST TECHNICAL FIGHTER:
Leonel Perez from Team Relson Gracie tore through his competition in both the Heavy and Light Heavy Advanced No-Gi Divisions. On his path to victory were some of NAGA's best, Anthony Argynos & David Tirelli who both made the trip down from the Northeast. Dave and Anthony will hopefully get another chance at Leonel when Rival Fight Gear offers Leonel a free trip to CT to compete in our 8-man competition in May.

SUPERFIGHT RESULTS:
Pablo Popovitch vs. Mat Santos
2000 North American Grappling Middleweight Champion Pablo Popovitch made quick work of Team JBA's Mat Santos winning by arm bar submission from the guard in 33 seconds. Pablo fights out of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Mat Santos, another NAGA champion, flew to Florida to compete in the light heavyweight advanced division. But Mat jumped at the chance to face the chiseled champion when Pablo's original opponent, Charles De Anjos, pulled a no-show. Look for Santos in the Feb 17th Absolute Division against Jeff Monson. Look for Pablo in the upcoming NAGA Mat Madness event on May 19th in Danbury, CT.

Paul Rodriquez vs. Rodrigo Ramos
While Paul Rodriquez is primarily an NHB fighter competing in WEF matches across the country, his pure grappling skills shined through in his 10-minute match against Rodrigo Ramos. While most of the match was fought from the stand up position, Rodriquez racked up advantages from numerous takedowns throughout the match. Ultimately when time ran out, the unanimous decision went to Paul Rodriquez.

OVERALL:
We had a great time in Florida and are looking forward to returning at the end of the year. I want to thank all of you who traveled from the Northeast and from neighboring states like MS, AL, SC, LA. Also a special thanks for the teams who made the 4 or 5 hour trip from Northern/Southern parts of Florida.

Pride 12 Post-Fight With Heath Herring
By Josh Gross

Heath Herring President Elect George W. Bush isn't the only person from Texas that's gained international notoriety lately. Fellow Texan Heath Herring burst onto the world stage after defeating Tom Erikson in Pride 11. The victory made many people take notice of Herring and discover something pretty interesting--he was no longer just a ground-and-pound wrestler. A year after moving to Holland, the brash 22-year-old has managed to become one of the most well rounded athletes competing in the fast growing sport. Adored by many Japanese fans, Herring has established himself as a serious contender for the title of best young heavyweight in the world.

FCF:   First off, tell me a little about your background.
HH:    I grew up in Amarillo, Texas. There's not much to say about that. I wrestled my senior year in high school and in my first year went to State. I didn't place in State but I think I was in the top-10. It was fun my first time, I got beat but I never wrestled before so I was happy with it. I got a football scholarship to play for the West Texas State Buffalos. I got into the shootfighting a little about because Steve Nelson started giving some lessons. The August before I went to report for two-a-days there was a shootfight in Amarillo and I fought in it. There was no money of course. I think there was a belt or something. I fought Paul Jones in the finals and I caught him in a key lock. He used a rope escape and then he caught me. I used a rope escape and he finally caught me in a choke. I think I just turned 18 at the time and I did a lot better than I thought I would so I stuck with it. My parents came to see it and thought their idiot son with too much testosterone needs to get his head beat in once and then he'll be happy. But, then they saw I actually had a little ability for it and they encouraged me and said I should do it. That's kind of how I ended up where I am now.

FCF:   How did you make that big step from living in Amarillo and fighting in the USWF to training in Holland?
HH:    Yeah, that's a very long story. I think God has a lot more to do with that than I do. I have some really good people in my life and I pray a lot about it and things worked out. If I had to repeat it all over again there's no way it could happen. As a matter of fact, before I met my manager Ron (Nyvquist) who's in Holland, I was in Pennsylvania wrestling in a college up there. I just got a football and wrestling scholarship up there and then after two months Ron said come over. That was a really hard decision because you just get a scholarship, get moved into a college you're about to start, everything is taken care of and then a pie-in-the-sky deal comes along. It was a really tough decision, but I think I made the right decision because here I am. The college said if I ever wanted to come back I could come back and play for them.

FCF:   You've been in Holland for over a year. How long did it take for you to adjust and how long did it take for the people over there to accept you?
HH:    The Dutch accept you right away. If they like you, they like you. If they don't, they don't and that's kinda how people are back home in Texas. I think they could sense that with me. I wasn't trying to play games or bullshit them. I really enjoy everyone over there. Gilbert [Yvel], Ron, Cor Hemmers and Roman Dekker and I are all good friends. We hang out all the time.

FCF:   What's the training like in Holland compared to your training in the U.S.?
HH:    All I have to say is I have the best trainer in the world, Cor Hemmers. We clicked right away. His family is like my second family, I do everything with them. His son is like my little brother and I'm very close with his wife. Also, Roman's mother is actually Cor's wife so we're all a very close-knit group over there. I think they're going to come and visit me and my family in Texas sometime this summer. When you develop a relationship with someone like that, it makes it that much easier to train and put your heart and soul into something. Cor believes in it and I believe in Cor, so when he says for me to do something I don't think there is an agenda there and I know it's the best for me.

FCF:   What is your relationship with the Golden Glory team?
Heath Herring HH:    Yeah, really our manager, Ron Nyqvist, brought in all Dutch fighters other than myself and brought us together. There are some big names in it. Gilbert, Remco Pardoel, Alistar and Valentijn Overeem from RINGS and a few other guys doing Shooto stuff. Alistar is in the upcoming King of Kings tournament and I think he has a good shot of winning it. Right now the team is coming together. It's a little difficult because everyone lives in different parts of Holland. Remco lives close to where I live so we train together at his school. We have a few guys from Germany that are training with us that should be coming into the game pretty quick. They're pretty good on the ground and they're picking up stand-up skills really quick.

FCF:   Now you're going home for a little while. How long are you planning on staying in Amarillo?
HH:    I hope I'm there for about a month. I need to get back to Holland by the end of January. Remco is going to fight and I'm going to work his corner. Valentijn is getting ready for the King of Kings and I need to help him get ready for that. Then there is a big show in Europe that Ron's putting on. I think Gilbert will have a rematch against Vanderlei Silva and I think Igor Vovchanchin is bringing his sparring partner over to fight. I'm not going to fight because I'm hoping that I'll be in the Grand Prix and I want to concentrate on that.

FCF:   Amarillo is a small town and you've been gone for a year. Before you left you had a big rivalry with Evan Tanner. Describe your relationship with him and, now that you've been gone for a year, if it's changed in your mind at all.
HH:    I'll tell you, I haven't even given him a thought. I guess Evan has been talking a lot about me lately and I don't know if he has a complex, but it seems like he's become obsessed about wanting to fight me. I don't even feel we're even in comparable states right now. I don't want to be rude I just don't think he's on my level right now. I don't think he's on the level of Tom Erikson. I feel I've put myself on a certain level right now I don't need to be concerned with him. I'll admit, I don't much care for him. I don't like the guy. I beat him when I was 19 and I've grown leaps and bounds. I don't think I'm even the same person I was and I think he's matured as a fighter also. I don't think he's the same fighter, but I don't think we're comparable at this point. I think there was a thing that maybe Pride was going to have him come fight me and I don't think they've thought twice about bringing him in to fight or not. I don't want to get anything started really bad and I don't want to be rude, but if you really look at it, it's like a B-level fighter wanting to fight Kerr. It's not feasible.

FCF:   The boxing commission in your home state has really caused a lot of problems for the USWF and other local promoters. Now that you've started to have success on the world stage do you think you might try and help?
HH:    A lot of that comes from people fighting with each other. If the promoters would get along with each other instead of trying to shut each other's show down then that might help. My dad ran shows in New Mexico and he wanted to run shows in Texas but some promoters would try and shut down shows if they were in the same town. They'd tell the commission about some small infringement and so it got to the point where the commission got tired of all these little kids squabbling and they shut down everything. The problem is the boxing commission doesn't like it because MMA will take out boxing and if they have a reason to shut it down, they will. The fight game has to come together for the common good and that's the only way it will survive. Otherwise, you'll have all these little faction groups and it's not going to become mainstream. You have to do something like boxing, where you have a unified title and, more importantly, work together to promote the sport.

FCF:   Okay, let's move from your past to the present and future. You've had three convincing victories with Pride. You beat Enson Inoue in your most recent match. Before the match you said you expected him to come out very aggressive but he didn't.
HH:    Right, it was a total surprise. I even asked Enson about that. It was the first fight I've ever seen Enson in where he didn't attack like a bull. I think, like I said before, that Cor Hemmers being a legend in Thailand had a lot to do with it. They respect him and they know if you train with him you know what you're doing. I am by no means an expert Thai Boxer but the quality of training you receive is so high and Enson said if you're training with Cor you have to be respectful of that. That's what he did. He came out and was worried to charge me. I had a knee planned but he didn't come in so it didn't work. I think I did okay standing up with him. I made a few mistakes, I should have thrown more punches and I should have moved more but it all ended up okay. For Cor it's very nice to see someone respect a fighting system so much that they change their game plan.

FCF:   During the fight you had a key lock on him that was very tight and you were cranking pretty hard but he didn't tap. What happened with that?
Heath Herring Vs. Enson Inoue HH:    Yeah, Enson's tough man. He's a monster and I give him all the respect in the world. I couldn't take the arm any farther at the position I was in and I'm still in the mentality of not to give up position for a submission. I heard it rip two or three times. I think he'll be okay, it was just some ligaments. It was the same situation I had with Bobby Hoffman in SuperBrawl. He's a tough guy.

FCF:   What's in your future, you said you want to fight in the Grand Prix correct?
HH:    I hope so and I've heard rumors but I don't want to start anything.

FCF:   Other than the Grand Prix is there anyone specifically you're aiming at?
HH:    I gotta take anybody they throw at me. I'm still a young guy.

FCF:   Where do you see yourself in a year from now?
HH:    I don't know. A year ago I wasn't near the fighter I am now so who knows. I think I'm rated number seven right now, it's incredible to me.

FCF:   When you first started did you think you could get to this level?
HH:    Yeah, of course. If you don't you shouldn't be doing this. When you start, you gotta aim for the top and I think everyone has too, otherwise they don't need to be doing it. If you really don't believe you can be the best at it there's no point. I'll tell you right now I'm more surprised than anybody. Whenever I see myself in a Japanese newspaper or something it blows my mind and then when I start thinking about Erikson and Inoue it makes me crazy.

FCF:   What's the story behind your hair?
HH:    Actually, it's my manager's idea. He owns a big sports center in Holland and they have a hair cut place in there. He's a real famous guy and before every fight he does some crazy stuff. The Japanese really seem to like it and they always want to see what's different each time. It doesn't bother me.

FCF:   Is there anything else you'd like to add?
HH:    Oh yeah. I hope the fans in America really take to Pride. Now that it's coming on pay-per-view, they should really try and watch it. Pride is the biggest show in the world right now and they're really trying to get all the best fighters in. I think they want to start coming to America and do some big things. Hopefully the American public will grasp it. I know everyone in the U.S. is still stuck on the UFC, but I don't think that they can put on the type of fights that Pride does right now.

FCF:   Thanks for your time Heath. Congratulations on your victory over Enson.
HH:    You're welcome.

RINGS USA       When RINGS Japan added its famous King of Kings event, it gained international publicity and great exposure for its athletes.
Building on that exposure, RINGS USA was formed and a mega 3-event tournament was held at three different sites in the U.S. The event brought the best of RINGS Japan against the best in the U.S.
Tsuyoshi Kosaka and Hiromitsu Kanehara of Japan...Valentijn Overeem of Holland...Chris Haseman of Australia...how would these international fighters stack up against America's Jeremy Horn, Bobby Hoffman, Tom Sauer, Eric Pele, Jermain Andre and Aaron Brink?
The first event was held in Orem, Utah, followed by part two in Honolulu, Hawaii...and the Finals in Moline, Ill. It's a pair of 16-man tournaments...heavyweights and light-heavyweights (200-under) for the first RINGS USA tournament championships.
All three events are professionally taped by JTV Productions, which also filmed at the Olympic Games in Australia.
These three events have never been offered on video before! Don't miss all the excitement!!

NEW UFC GETS RID OF OLD MATCHMAKER

John Perretti
John Perretti, the man responsible for making matches for the past couple years for the UFC has been let go by the new owners of the UFC.

More information coming soon.

DAVE MENNE TOPS THE TOPS IN THE SPORT

Dave Menne winning at WEF
KUWAIT SHIDOKAN JITSU WARRIORS WAR I
Hughes, Pele, Newton, Menne, some of the top talent in lightweight world traveled half-way around the globe in hopes of winning $60,000 in an 8-man tournament on Kuwaiti oil-uh...soil. No easy victory as Menne would face Canada's Carlos Newton in the first round and then Russian alternate Maro Magob before fighting the much heavier Kareem Barklaev from Russia in the finals.

Here is a quick rundown of the fights as told to FCF via telephone.

Pele Landi vs. Matt Hughes
In the opening they locked up on their feet as they exchanged some knees, body punches against the cage for a while. Matt landed some pretty good knees to the midsection. Pele landed some punches to the side. Pele scored the first takedown, but as soon as Matt landed, Matt turned it. Matt pushed Pele into the cage, right in front of Pat Miletich [trainer], and that is where it stayed probably for 21/2 to 3 minutes, with Matt landing knees to the body, and a couple of knees to the head. Pele did a very good job scooting out, and was able to get back to his feet. Pele pushed Matt back. He was almost to the cage. Matt shot low-like for a single, and Pele came in with his left knee and BOOM, nailed him. Matt went down on his hands and knees, as referee John McCarthy stopped the bout.

Kareem Barklaev vs. Derso Lema
Barklaev had his way with Lema standing. It ended up going the distance with Barklaev getting the unanimous decision.

Dave Menne vs. Carlos Newton
It was a close one...Menne was getting the edge standing, he was landing the better shots, better punches, better kicks. Newton took Menne down first and Menne was able to get away, and then Menne took Newton down and Newton almost got an arm-bar, but Menne was able to pull out. Newton at one point was able to get mount on Dave-Newton was superior on the ground. He had the submission attempts and such and then Dave got back up and again Dave was winning the stand-up with about a minute left in the fight. Dave landed a punch and then a kick to the head and dropped Newton, put him right on his ass up by the cage and then he jumped on him and basically controlled him and punched him until the fight ended and he won by unanimous decision.

Khared Mubarak vs. Antonio [spelling of last name not available]
Antonio was winning most of the time and ended up winning the fight, but they were both so exhausted that he couldn't go on.

Semi Finals
Kareem Barklaev vs. Pele Landi
Barklaev just beat the shit out of Pele. He punched him hard standing, pushed him to the ground, got the mount and just pounded him and pounded him. Barklaev got a figure-4 on Pele's back and at one point Pele stood-up with Barklaev completely air lifted on his back... wrapped around him, but Pele couldn't do anything and ended up falling to the ground. Barklaev tried a few rear naked chokes, and eventually spun over and got the mount again and punched Pele until they stopped it.

Dave Menne vs Maro Magob
Magob is a Russian Kickboxer who won the alternate in 30 seconds-he kicked his opponent in the head and the match was stopped. He came in to replace Antonio for this bout. It was a good fight. Magob was real good. He threw a lot of power left hooks-punches like that. Menne was just better, better kicks, better punches. It went the whole 10 minutes, all on the feet, I don't think it ever went to the ground. Dave won the striking and kicking and got the unanimous decision.

Final
Dave Menne vs. Kareem Barklaev
note about the weigh-ins
The day before the show they changed the weight limit from 85 Kilos to 90 kilos-that is a change of 11lbs. Every other fighter could have made 85 kilos except for Barklaev, who had to weigh in twice to make 90 kilos. Barklaev weighed in at 198 lbs. while Dave Menne weighed 189 lbs. Dave weighed in with all his clothes on and he had eaten breakfast-because they told us the weight class had changed.

It was an absolute war...Dave and Barklaev were exchanging punches, exchanging kicks and it was just a really close fight both ways. Barklaev was trying to take Menne down but he couldn't. Menne took Barklaev down and landed some body and head shots, but he got up. Somewhere in there Menne lands a jumping knee to Barklaev's head and stuns him. A minute later, Barklaev landed a big knee to Menne's head and staggered him a little bit. It was a really close fight. I thought Menne was getting the better punching in. He started pursuing him and landing more combinations and I thought he had a little more of an edge. They warned Barklaev a couple of times for grabbing the cage. He had done it quite a bit. They got down to a minute left and Barklaev hit Menne with a hip toss, got him to the ground and got the mount with one minute left. Menne did a nice job pulling him tight and getting low so Barklaev wasn't able to do much. What Barklaev did was grab the cage and he was punching Dave. He had already had 2 warnings about grabbing the cage and punching, so McCarthy gave him a foul that resulted in a 1 point deduction. I believe All 3 judges had it 10-10 an even round, but with the 1 point deduction, Menne won the unanimous decision.

DANA WHITE CLAIMS
JOHN PERRETTI IS STILL IN

Dana White Yesterday, after receiving an e-mail from John Perretti, we reported that he was let go of his duties as UFC matchmaker by the new management [ZUFFA] -- A report that Dana White flatly denied yesterday on Eddie Goldman's "No Holds Barred" show. White, the new acting president of the UFC, stated that he has not gotten a chance to sit-down [in person] to discuss the future with Perretti. White claims Perretti is still very much the matchmaker--at this time. Perretti however felt he was no longer the matchmaker after speaking with White a few days ago.

So, as it stands... according to Dana White, John Perretti is still matchmaker for the promotion. Perretti is out of the country on a movie set and unable to be reached for comment at this time. I'm sure he will be happy to learn he [officially] is still the matchmaker today.

In more related UFC news, Mark Robinson has been added to the UFC XXX line-up (see the latest line-up below)...

"NO HOLDS BARRED" ON EYADA SPORTS,
THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 12-16:

by Eddie Goldman

"No Holds Barred" can be heard every Monday through Friday, 3 to 5 PM New York time (Eastern Time - U.S.), only on eYada.com (http://www.eyada.com).

Now there is an even easier way to listen to all the news and interviews we provide on "No Holds Barred" about mixed martial arts, grappling, boxing, kickboxing, and wrestling. We have a new, direct link that lets you play the show when it is on live, or play the archive after the live show. It is:

http://www.eyada.com/redirect/redirect.cfm?id=20

Eddie Monday, February 12 -- He was hailed as mixed martial arts fighter of the year for many years, but Frank Shamrock has slowed his fight schedule of late. Today Frank tells us what he is up to. Also, the International Fighting Championships (IFC) will once again be making history when its IFC World Tour makes its first stop in the country of Greece on May 26 with its "Clash of the Titans" show in Athens. Today IFC commissioner Paul Smith tells us all about how and why the IFC will come to the land of the original Olympics and the ancient sport that is the forerunner of mixed martial arts, Pankration. And we will also have a report from the Ring of Fire 2 mixed martial arts and kickboxing event held this past Saturday in Denver, Colorado.

Tuesday, February 13 -- After taking a break from fighting and returning to the UFC in December, Evan Tanner is wasting no time in his quest for a world title. Evan will challenge UFC middleweight champion Tito Ortiz in a title bout at UFC XXX on February 23 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Today we speak with Evan. Also, Lions Den fighter Joe Hurley returns to mixed martial arts action on February 24 at the King of the Cage 7 in the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California against Charlie Kohler. Today we speak with Joe.

Wednesday, February 14 -- Is Tito Ortiz the best under-200 pound mixed martial arts fighter in the world? Judge for yourself, as he will put his UFC middleweight belt on the line at UFC XXX on February 23 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey against Evan Tanner. Today we speak with Tito. Fabiano Iha is also on this UFC XXX card, facing Phil Johns in a lightweight fight. Today we speak with Fabiano. And Doug Fischer of Houseofboxing.com also joins us with his regular analysis of the latest in the "Sweet Science." Look for more information soon on this segment with Doug Fischer becoming a regular weekly feature here on "No Holds Barred."

Thursday, February 15 -- Today we once again say "Aloha" to Super Brawl promoter T. Jay Thompson, whose Super Brawl XX show takes place on February 23 at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. T. Jay discusses this card, which features official Shooto fights. Also joining us is Vladimir Borodin, one of the top Muay Thai instructors in the US, who tells us about the K-1 kickboxing show in the Netherlands that took place on February 4. Vladimir also talks all about his academy, Borodin's Muay Thai Gym, located in the Sheepshead Bay section on Brooklyn.

Friday, February 16 -- The 2001 World Championships of Wrestling are scheduled to come to New York's Madison Square Garden in September, and today USA Wrestling and NYC 2012 are holding a kickoff announcement and media luncheon in New York City to discuss it. We will have a report from this event, which takes place at noon ET, shortly before our live webcast, including hopefully having some wrestling notables as guests. Kipp Kollar, president of the North American Grappling Association, also joins us to discuss the Garden State Grappling Challenge, to be held this Saturday, February 17, at the Central Regional Middle School in Bayville, New Jersey.

COMPLETE CARD - SUBJECT TO CHANGE:
8 MAN 99 KG & Up Submission Wrestling Tournament - Final American Qualifier for ADCC 2001
LADIES ABSOLUTE STYLE:

JUDY NEFF (Wrestling) vs. JESSICA ROSS (Gracie Jiu Jitsu). Much can be said for both women. Judy, the wife of Roger Neff, has had a handful of fights and has managed to pull out several victories. Meanwhile, Jessica, a Gracie Jiu Jitsu practitioner and training partner of Angelo Popofski, will make her long-awaited fighting debut in a bout that already has people talking.

OFFICIAL "SHOOTO" MATCHES:

(2 x 5 MIN - MIDDLEWEIGHT) MIKE WILLUS (University of Pittsburgh MMA Club) vs. VIRGIL STREZLECKI (ranked #10) (Chicago Fight Team). Willis, now 3-0 in HnS, continues to improve with each outing and Virgil, quickly improving himself, is always out for the win.

(3 x 5 MIN - MIDDLEWEIGHT) FABIANO GONCALVES (Boxing/Jiu Jitsu) vs. CHRIS LYTLE (Integrated Fighting). Gonzales, a tough Brasilian veteran of Sergio Baterelli's IFC event, is set to make his U.S. debut but must first get past Chris Lytle. An ADCC U.S. Trials runner-up, this Jason Godsey trained athlete is also undefeated in HnS. An interesting bout to say the least.

(2x 5 MIN -WELTERWEIGHT) RYOJI YOSHIZAWA (USA Shooto) vs. JEFF CURRAN (Pedro Sauer Jiu Jitsu). Although little is known about Yoshizawa in the mainstream, all reports say that he is a fighting machine with an undefeated record. Curran, with his only losses to the likes Henry Matamoros and Phil Johns, is also known for being one tough customer! The two battle it out in the welterweight division.

(3 x 5 MIN - MIDDLEWEIGHT) JAY BUCK (Chicago Fight Team) vs. STEVE BERGER (Rodrigo Vaghi Jiu Jitsu). Buck, currently ranked #5 and Berger at #2 make an incredible fight on paper. Berger, making a habit of fighting the best in the game, takes his hard-hitting standup and BJJ talents to Buck's relentless Boxing and wrestling skills. A definitely clash that you would NOT want to miss.

HnS PANCRASE STYLE LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
JASON WALLS (CHAMPION) vs. PAT BENSON (Special Submission Fighting Rules). Since September 20, 1997 Jason "The Survivor" Walls has successfully defended his HnS Lightweight Submission Fighting Championship. With a MMA record of 9-1, Jason is the current and longest reigning champion in HnS history and has scored some of the quickest submission victories in the sport. Since his serious auto accident, he has been plagued with injuries and is hoping to retire without another loss. One problem, Pat Benson is one of the best up-and-coming fighters and a 2000 ADCC Trials Runner Up as well as a 8-2 record in MMA. Pat has excellent wrestling, striking and submission skills and trains with the likes of Rodrigo Vaghi and Steve Berger. This could very well make him Walls toughest match ever.

HnS ABSOLUTE WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
PHIL JOHNS (Silverbacks Team) vs. SEAN WILMOT (Mass. Submission Fighting). Johns, the tough as nails champion, tries to continue his winnings. Wilmot is hungry for the championship and has had excellent showings in previous HnS cards including a KO that is a "highlight keeper"!

HnS ABSOLUTE FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (To Fill Vacant Title)
TRAVIS PHIPPEN (American Jiu Jitsu Academy) vs. ICHAKU MURATA (Relson Gracie Jiu Jitsu). Murata made a definite impact in the ADCC Trials earlier in the year by defeating his first round opponent in only :15 with a textbook kneebar. At HnS "Fusion" Murata was able to pull the kneebar out of nowhere to defeat seasoned veteran, Jeremy Bolt. Travis Phippen is the 2000 winner of the Gold Medal in the Pankration Games in Greece. Quite possibly one of the greatest accomplishments in the sport. Phippen also did battle with Jeremy Bolt in a definite show stopper that still has fans talking. Only one man will leave with the championship.

HnS ABSOLUTE LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP (To Fill Vacant Title)
JOHN "THE SAINT" RENKEN (Team Havoc) vs. SCOTT HENZE (Freestyle). Renken is notorious for getting raw deals and bad press despite being a "man of the cloth." Renken is not only a preacher but one of the most seasoned fighters in the Midwest and can seemingly pull an unexpected victory out of thin air. He has competed in Pride and Pancrase in Japan and is nicknamed the "Saint". Henze, on the other hand, has a "bad boy" image that leaves his opponents wondering what he will do next. On many occasions, Henze's opponents fall victim to a HARD suplex or Judo throw that sets up his brutal, ground-and-pound assault or submission attack. Good vs. Evil, the Saint vs. the Sinner.....whatever cliche you can put in, it's going to be a great match.

  Wednesday - February 14, 2001     Happy VD

Gladiators Challenge Results
by Josh Gross
Colusa, Calif. - 2-18-01

Jerry Bohlander's attempt at rising to the top of the mixed martial arts 199lbs. division suffered a setback Sunday night as he lost a three-round decision to Millenia Jiu-Jitsu standout, Romie Aram. Dominating position for the first two rounds, Aram opened a cut above Bohlander's left eye with a solid punch, but couldn't finish the Lions Den fighter. Bohlander came out strong in the third and final round, yet failed to sway the judges and fell to 1-1 in his comeback bid.
Controversy engulfed the match between Jesus is Lord fighter, Kai Kamaka, and Combat Grappling's Joe Stevenson. Referee Larry Landless stopped the fight at 2:16 of round one, after what he thought was a Kamaka tap-out. After further discussion, both Kamaka and Landless said the stoppage was a mistake because Landless mistook a problem with Kamaka's glove for the signal of surrender. Kamaka was gracious in defeat and it appears as if a rematch could be in the works.
The King of the Cage Featherweight Championship was up for grabs as Dave Valasquez faced Submission Factory fireplug, Charlie Valencia. Both fighters battled back and forth, trading submission attempts and strikes for three rounds. The best fight of the night came down to the judges' cards and Valencia was awarded the decision, becoming KOTC Featherweight Champ.

The rest of the results are as follows:
  • Buck Greer def. Pete Werve by decision after two rounds.

  • Jake Shields def. Randy Valardy by rear-naked choke 3:19 of the second round.

  • Quinton Jackson def. Dave Taylor after Taylor's corner threw in the towel following the first round.

  • Martin Armandarez def. Darryl Nelson by referee stoppage 1:06 of round one.

  • Bryan Sleeman def. Atilla Bodor by decision after two rounds.

  • Jeremy Edwards def. Dan Nolan by knockout 0:16 into round one.

  • Jason Lambert def. Jorge Lazama by keylock 3:45 of round one.

  • Boa Quach def. Joe Camacho by decision after two rounds.

  • Lupe Barajas def. David Padilla 2:00 into round one after Padilla's corner threw in the towel.

THE NEW UFC COMES TO NEW YORK
By Joel Gold

Tito Ortiz As I drove up Broadway to the point where it intersects with Amsterdam Avenue on the upper west side of Manhattan, I came across a sight never seen before, by my eyes or other's...UFC posters featuring Tito Ortiz lined the streets of the trendy west side. I was making my way to the "new" UFC's first fighter press conference at Time Out, a sports bar that shows UFC Pay-Per-View events to the unfortunate cable subscribers that don't otherwise get to see the event.

Food, drink and even press kits followed as I made my way past the press and fans that came to hear what the combatants had to say about their upcoming bouts this Friday in Atlantic City. The two title matches were showcased at the conference...Tito Ortiz will be defending his Middleweight Title against challenger Evan Tanner;"The Pulverizer" Kaoru Uno and Jens Pulver Jens Pulver and Japan's Kaoru Uno will fight for the vacant Bantamweight Title. New UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta, UFC President Dana White and MMAC Commissioner Jeff Blatnick were on hand to answer questions. Introductions were made and questions were answered as pictures were snapped of the talented fighters who enjoyed being treated like the true professional athletes they are. Jeremy Horn, local fighter Phil Baroni, fight manager/Extreme Challenge promoter Monte Cox, and Matt Hughes were also in attendance.

Evan Tanner and Tito Ortiz Tito Ortiz, on how he will be able to stop Evan Tanner's aggressive knees and elbows...
Tanner has never fought anybody like me...ever. I'm aggressive; I come out 100% hard with aggression. I'm going to try and stop everything he does. I'm a good wrestler, but I also have good strikes. So, maybe you are going to see a submission, you may see takedowns, you may see knockouts. I'm going out and letting everything fly. There's nothing holding back. I'm gonna let everything go, punches, kicks, elbows, knees, submissions--head-locks, arm-locks, leg-locks, you are going to see everything. I'm going show what mixed martial arts need to be shown.

Evan Tanner when asked about striking the body of Ortiz--as he did in his last bout against Lance Gibson with great success...
I'm going to try and hit him wherever I can. Like Tito said, it's going to be a great fight. It is going to be tough; this will be my toughest fight to date. If Tito comes out strong and gives 100%-I expect that, it's going to be a great fight. I'm definitely going to try and hit him whenever I can and do everything to win. [Tito chimes in "it is going to be hard!"]

Jeremy Horn Jeremy Horn on his opponent Elvis Sinosic...
I know he's tough, he takes a lot of fights on short notice, so I think that he's always training, always ready to fight, he doesn't need to prepare for a big fight. I know he's primarily a ground fighter, but it looks like he kicks pretty hard, so hopefully I can take advantage of that.
When asked if he sees this being more of a stand-up fight... If I have anything to say about it, it will...I know he's good on the ground so...keep it where he's weakest.

KEEP CHECKING BACK ALL WEEK AS WE WILL HAVE UPDATES EACH DAY LEADING UP TO FIGHT DAY.

From the event's promoter:

UFC Returns To A.C. With A Storm
By Tom DeFazio
Bantamweight Belt

Atlantic City was hit with a nasty snowstorm that dropped 6-7 inches of white stuff on the city, forcing the Atlantic City Airport to close down and reroute flights to Newark and Philadelphia airports. Luckily all fighters were already in town by the time the storm hit.

During today's press conference at the Taj, as the storm got into full swing outside, there was a bit of a storm developing indoors as well. There was some heavy tension between Curtis Stout and Phil Baroni who are set to face each other in one of the preliminary matches. Luckily cooler heads prevailed and they will settle their differences in the Octagon tomorrow night.

Phil Baroni Phil Baroni on his opponent Curtis Stout...
I know he thinks he's pretty tough and I'm gonna show him that he's not...that he's not such a good fighter...not as good as he thinks he is.

On how he sees the fight going...
There's gonna be punishment. Beatin' him up real bad and him tappin', not being able to take it. I don't think he's ever been hit the way I hit.

You predict a tap out instead of a knockout?
Well, if he's lucky, I'll knock him out, if not he's gonna get punished--he'll probably get knocked out, I don't know, we'll see. I think if I hit him once and he doesn't go out, he's gonna look to tap.

There looks to be some bad blood between you, what caused that?
He made a couple of comments on the computer that I'm gonna make him pay for.

Curtis Stout Curtis Stout on Baroni...
I know he talks a lot of trash, I know he's a body builder, male stripper...he's Mr. Fabulous...that's pretty much it, he talks a lot, we'll see if he can live up to his trash talk.

About the friction with Baroni...
Everyone on The Underground and the Internet knows he's been talking trash about me...I respect everybody, I'm tryin' to act like a professional, but he goes off and says he's gonna smash me like he's the Incredible Hulk and all of this steroid induced quotes. But I come here to fight, I'm here to have fun. He said he's ready to die--whatever that means--I told 'em I'm not ready to die, I'm just ready to get in there and have some fun and mix it up...I'm plannin' to come out on top.

On how he sees the fight going...
Since he's bigger than me, he's probably a lot stronger than me, he's gonna use his wrestling skills to take me down and ground and pound me, but I'm prepared for that, I've worked out with a lot of big wrestlers...I plan to use my Thai skills to mess up his legs and my boxing skills to mix it up with him...I hear he's a pretty good boxer so it should be an exciting fight.

Are you primarily a stand-up fighter?
Actually no, I feel comfortable on the ground...I think if he makes a mistake on the ground from all his swinging--which he probably will--I think I can catch him in a submission hold, that's my plan.

Frank Shamrock and Kaoru Uno At the Fighter/Manager meeting later in the evening, it was announced that Frank Shamrock [pictured here with Kaoru Uno] would be joining the broadcast team with Jeff Blatnick and Mike Goldberg. Former UFC champions Mark Coleman and Mark Kerr showed up for the meeting, this is Kerr's first time attending a UFC since he and the old organization had a parting of the ways some three and a half years ago. Former Heavyweight Champion Kevin Randleman is also in town for the show.

Yesterday we brought you Jeremy Horn's thoughts on his opponent from "down under",Elvis Sinosic; today, we bring you Elvis' thoughts...

Elvis Sinosic Elvis on his training background...
I've been doing martial arts for years, I've just about done everything, but currently I'm training in Machado Jiu-Jitsu and some Thai boxing.

On his opponent...
I know Jeremy is very experienced fighter, he's one of the new genertion of well-rounded fighters along the lines of Frank Shamrock, he's got skills in all areas...so he's one of those fighters that's very hard to create a game plan against. He can get in there...he can do stand-up, he can get on the ground and grapple; so, it's really hard to take him out of his game.

How he sees the fight going...
I believe he wants to make it a stand-up fight, and I'm happy to do that for him...but I think the way these fights go, is that it's gonna hit the ground eventually, so we'll see what happens; he's gonna decide where it goes, I'm happy to go either way.

Frank Shamrock and Kaoru Uno We'll leave you with a shot of Evan Tanner, Lorenzo Fertitta & Tito Ortiz and the middleweight belt.

Be sure to check back tomorrow, we'll have quotes from Bobby Hoffman, Pedro Rizzo, and more!

Super Brawl XX Results
Blaisdell Arena, Honolulu, Hawaii
February 23, 2001
By Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com

Super Brawl XX had a little more action and unusual circumstances than normal MMA events that I have attended or even seen on video. In fact, this was the craziest series of events that I have ever heard of. First off, Brennan Kamaka steps in for his brother Kai, when Kai injures his knee the day before the event, even with a rib injury that has not totally healed. In fact, that injury cost him the match. Then, one of Kaleo Padilla's corner men ran into the ring and jumped on Anthony Torres when he was mounting Padilla. Egan Inoue (Torres' corner man) rushed in to push Padilla's corner man off and people just kept rushing into the ring throwing wild punches. There must have been 30 people in the ring fighting at one point. The police stepped into the ring and did the only thing they could, started spraying Pepper spray like there was no tomorrow. Eventually the fight broke up, but my wife and my brother's girlfriend got to experience the second hand effects of Pepper spray. It did not bother me (don't ask why I wasn't affected). Augie Padaken, brother of Cheyenne "Oh Can He Punch" Padaken, stepped in to replace Niko Vitale on 24 hours notice to fight Charlie Anderson and pulled out a majority decision. After a much needed intermission, Mansour Heidari was told that he was not allowed to wear his wrestling shoes to fight, right after both he and his opponent, Ron Jhun, were in the ring. Wearing shoes or shirts (lycra or otherwise) is strictly prohibited in Shooto. Heidari, an Olympic wrestler from Iran, replied, "I am a wrestler. I wear wrestling shoes." Promoter T. Jay Thompson instructed him that he either take off the shoes or he must forfeit the match. Heidari turned around and walked out of the ring, thus forfeiting the match. He raised his hands, waving to the crowd, as the crowd booed him all the way back to the dressing rooms. He responded to the crowd by giving the fans two thumbs down. Thomas submits Bozo with a triangle-arm bar If all that wasn't enough, Din Thomas almost forfeited his match because he resisted taking off his lycra shirt, which is also prohibited by Shooto rules. After some protest (and Jaime Levine yelling, "New rules again? And you're telling me fucking today [about them]?"), Thomas agreed to take off his shirt and the fight went on as scheduled. After Thomas' skillful submission [pictured: Thomas submits Bozo with a triangle-arm bar], Thomas topped off the evening's weird event by telling the crowd that "they just witnessed another Din Thomas performance." This brought a ton of boos from the crowd as Thomas danced to the music back to his dressing room. Thomas certainly did not pick up any Hawaii fans, that's for sure. Other than the weird events that seemingly would not end, the matches were very exciting with a ton of reversals and some solid stand up exchanges. These events are certainly not good for the sport, but it was an incredible spectacle to experience, especially where you are sitting in, what I like to affectionately term, "the blood row." For full fight descriptions, post fight interviews and more details on the wacky incidents, you have to subscribe to Full Contact Fighter, if you haven't already.

King of the Cage 7 Quick Results
Soboba Casino San Jacinto, Calif.
February 24, 2001
By Josh Gross

Mezger Vs. Otsuka       After a brief road trip to Michigan, the King of the Cage returned home only to be greeted by a wet and dreary Southern California night. Despite the downpour, upwards of 5,000 ticket holders came out to witness one of the most unique nights of mixed martial arts action ever. Rain plagued much of the event playing havoc with the fighters, octagon and production. The action in the ring resembled something you'd see in a slip and slide commercial but, as per usual, the KOTC crew put on a fine show and solid fight card.

NEW JERSEY ATHLETIC COMMISSIONER LARRY HAZZARD
ISSUES CALL FOR MEETING OF ALL U.S. MIXED MARTIAL ARTS PROMOTERS

by Eddie Goldman, "No Holds Barred," eYada.com

ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY -- We just may be seeing the first rays of the final light at the end of the tunnel in the protracted battle to get the sport of mixed martial arts fully sanctioned and legalized.

In his address to the UFC XXX Fighters and Managers Meeting on Thursday, February 22, Larry Hazzard, commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, one of the most highly regarded athletic commissions, told all those assembled, "You have arrived as a legitimate sporting enterprise." After reminding everyone that back in November he had said he would see how the mixed martial arts events went in New Jersey, and then summon the promoters to a meeting to hammer out a common set of rules to govern the sport, he said that the time has now arrived to have this meeting to develop a refined and consolidated set of rules and regulations.

Thus, he has issued a call to all mixed martial arts promoters in the United States to come together, at a date and time likely in early April, and a place to be determined, to accomplish this task. The results of this meeting would be made known to all the other athletic commissions, including their joint body, the Association of Boxing Commissions. Already Lorenzo Fertitta of the UFC and Paul Smith of the IFC have publicly supported this call.

In an exclusive interview with Commissioner Hazzard, which will be played on my "No Holds Barred" show on eYada.com this Monday, February 26, he also stressed that unity among the promoters is essential at this time. To facilitate this historic initiative, I am working with him to help put together a list of all the mixed martial arts promoters in the US so that they can be fully informed about this meeting. While I have most of these contacts, I am asking that ALL mixed martial arts promoters in the USA send me their official contact information, including phone number, fax number, e-mail address, mailing address, and web site, so that I can forward them to Commissioner Hazzard. Please e-mail this information to: eddiegoldman@eyada.com, or phone me at (212) 863-1190. Thanks, and keep up the good fight!

"NO HOLDS BARRED" ON EYADA SPORTS,
THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 26 - MARCH 2:

by Eddie Goldman

Eddie UFC XXX is in the books, capping off one of the biggest weekends in mixed martial arts history. We will be providing you coverage of the many fights that just took place, and more this week, including a number of live and taped interviews to offer you a chance to talk to the fighters themselves, as well as to get their on-the-spot immediate postfight reactions.

We also are covering closely a major story: the call by Larry Hazzard, commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, to all mixed martial arts promoters in the United States to come together to a meeting to develop a common, refined, and consolidated set of rules and regulations to govern the sport of mixed martial arts.

The taped interviews throughout the course of this week include comments by Commissioner Hazzard, as well as UFC fighters Fabiano Iha, Pedro Rizzo and his trainer Roberto Leitao, Elvis Sinosic, Kevin Randleman, and Phil Baroni. We also will play taped interviews from Saturday's Vengeance at the Vanderbilt kickboxing and grappling event in Plainview, New York, with mixed martial artists Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie, and John Weidler, and rising star kickboxer Tim Lane

Monday, February 26 -- We're back live in New York, and as usual will open the week with a bang. We have a report from this past Friday's UFC XXX and an evaluation of the "new UFC," as well as an analysis of this past Saturday's King of the Cage 7 from mixed martial arts journalist Jeff Thaler, who attended that event. We also will play the interview with Larry Hazzard, commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, where he discusses his call to all mixed martial arts promoters in the United States to come together to a meeting to develop a common, refined, and consolidated set of rules and regulations to govern the sport of mixed martial arts. And Doug Fischer of Houseofboxing.com also joins us with his regular weekly analysis of the latest in the world of the "Sweet Science," including a preview of Saturday's Evander Holyfield-John Ruiz fight, as well as a recap of this past Saturday's Roy Jones, Jr. fight in Tampa.

Tuesday, February 27 -- Mixed martial arts fighter Romie Aram scored an upset last week at the Gladiator's Challenge when he defeated Jerry Bohlander of the Lions Den. Today we speak with Romie. And never at a loss for words is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts fighter Wallid Ismail, who will share with us his plans and his thoughts on the world of combat sports.

Wednesday, February 28 -- You may have seen Dr. Margaret Goodman ringside at many boxing events in Nevada. That is because she is a ringside physician for the Nevada State Athletic Commission, as well as its neurological consultant. Today she discusses a new project, the issuing of a manual on training and fighters' rights, that the commission will soon publish, a document Dr. Goodman says will be valuable not only to boxers, but mixed martial artists also. And Kid Peligro, the griot of grappling for the Abu Dhabi Combat Club news page, has just returned from the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Today he discusses preparations for the 2001 Submission Wrestling World Championships, to be held April 11-13, as well as this coming weekend's first annual Arnold World Gracie Submission Championships in Columbus, Ohio, part of the annual Arnold Fitness Weekend.

Thursday, March 1 -- Will Mark Coleman return to action in Pride or the UFC? We may find out today, as the former UFC heavyweight champion and current Pride Grand Prix champion talks with us.

Friday, March 2 -- It may not be listed on your calendar, but we have dubbed today "UFC Champions Day." Joining us will be UFC middleweight champion Tito Ortiz, who successfully defended his title with a stunning defeat of Evan Tanner at UFC XXX, and new UFC bantamweight champion Jens Pulver, who became the first fighter to hold that title with a decision over Kaoru Uno.

Rage in the Cage XXV:
Dewees defeats "A-Dawg"

Last month, Allan "A-Dawg" Sullivan posted victories over two UFC veterans. The RITC XXV main event between 18 year old sensation Edwin "Babyface" Dewees and "A-Dawg" appeared "on paper" to be a potential mismatch. This definitely was not the case. Edwin won by arm bar submission at the 2:30 mark of round 1.

A Thursday night crowd of 1,332 enjoyed 18 action packed fights. The next 10 monthly RITC shows at Celebrity Theatre are scheduled for Saturday nights. This should help to achieve sell-outs (2,651) for future events. Special guest Ricco Rodriquez, KOTC Heavyweight Champ, was on hand to enjoy the show. Ricco entered the cage and complimented promoter Roland Sarria on his RITC events and dedication to MMA. Ricco mentioned that at his last Pride event, he competed before 45,000 fans and that he would be fighting at KOTC 7 on Saturday night at the Soboba Casino in California.

Two teams deserve special recognition. The Shark Tank from California went undefeated (3 - 0) for the evening and the Brausa Cage Warriors once again posted a stellar record (9 - 2).
