2000 World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships Results
Story by Chris Onzuka
Results courtesy of Brian Cimins at www.grapplers.com

Well, here it is for you Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fanatics, the results of the 2000 World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships thanks to our friend Brian Cimins of the Grapplers Quest and Grapplers.com. It looks like our FCF correspondent, and my brother, Mike Onzuka has gone MIA (missing in action). After his Day 2 report, he has not gotten in touch with anybody here and let us know how he and Kaleo Hosaka did in their matches. Their names are not in the top three, so I know they didn't win the thing. Oh well, it is the salt mines in a third world country for the both of them. Enjoy the results.

One of the champions that we have to mention is BJ Penn, who won the Pena class (under 147 lbs.) in the Black Belt division, the class Royler Gracie has dominated since the first Mundial in 1996. Don't get ahead of yourselves, Royler was unable to compete because of a bad injury. He announced his withdrawal from the tournament weeks before it. The crazy thing is BJ was awarded his black belt on the Monday before the Mundial. He prepared himself to compete in the Brown Belt division. He is the first Non-Brazilian to win a World BJJ Championship in the Black Belt division. Another note about BJ is that he placed second in the 1998 Mundial in the Blue Belt division. He has attained a black belt in a little over four years and is a World champion as a black belt, proving that it is well-deserved. You better believe that we will catch up with BJ and FCF readers will enjoy the fruits of our labor...and his.

HOOKnSHOOT &
THE 2001 ABU DHABI QUALIFIER SERIES
UPDATE

On July 22,nd, 2000 HOOKnSHOOT in Evansville, Indiana hosted the first American Qualifier for the 2001 Submission Wrestling World Championships. "This is our second year hosting these tournaments, and we have to say that the first year of was a great success. This year, we kicked off the series with a new weight class, the under 65.9 KG " states promoter Jeff Osborne.

As expected, the little guys were fast paced and exciting "We were impressed with the whole field. Last year we didn’t have one at 145 lbs. We were afraid we wouldn’t get enough applicants. This year proved us wrong" continues Osborne.

Mike Cardosa, a Jiu Jitsu stylist from Miami, Florida conquered the eight man field on July 22nd to come away with the trophy and the invitation to Abu Dhabi.

NEXT EVENT - AUGUST 19th, 2000 - EVANSVILLE, INDIANA - 66-76.9 KG

"The tapes are in to the Abu Dhabi Combat Club, we have made our recommendations. The final invites will be out soon" states promoter Jeff Osborne. "The field will be awesome if it holds. We have nearly 20 solid applicants. There are a lot of good reputations too that are stepping up - we have always hoped these events will take grappling to a new level in the United States, and with this level of competition, we feel we are heading in the right direction" continues HnS guru Osborne.

Look for the complete lineup to be announced closer to the August 19th HOOKnSHOOT TRIUMPH event.

SCHEDULE FOR THE 2001 QUALIFIERS: "We have tournaments in all the other weight classes, like last year. The best way to be considered is to send a tape for review" states Osborne. HOOKnSHOOT is now taking tapes for the following three tournaments:

SEPTEMBER 16th, 2000 - 88-98.9 KG Class (Date changed from 9/23)
NOVEMBER 11th, 2000 - 77-87.9 KG Class

VENGEANCE AT THE VANDERBILT 9
Held August 5th

It was a night of action on Long Island, NY this past Saturday as Louis Neglia and Ray Longo held the 9th Vengeance at the Vanderbilt. Kickboxing, Thai boxing and Freestyle Grappling were showcased with many exciting matches.

Lane Vs. Nieves The fight of the night was Frank Nieves vs. Tim Lane in a non-stop action bout of kickboxing. Both fighters hit the canvas throughout the bout. Nieves was able to score a decision over Lane who looked to gas in the later rounds due to trying to score an early KO victory. Lane, who 2 weeks before the bout suffered a deep gash over his eye in training, was looking for an early KO before his eye would open up and the bout would come to a halt.

Panza and Baroni The most talked about match of the night between Scott McTigue [Renzo Gracie] and Phil Baroni [Panza] in and Freestyle match up, never happened due to McTigue suffering from a skin condition. McTigue was replaced by John Hayes who gamely took the bout against Baroni, a college wrestling star and undefeated boxer and kickboxer with a mean streak to match. Baroni easily took out Hayes in 35 seconds with strikes as the referee halted the bout. Baroni, never short on words, declared he will enter into the world of NHB and is looking for a match up with Renzo Gracie standout, Matt Serra.

We have added 40 pictures from Shooto show held on August 4th. I think Susumu sent me some new concept photos like closing up the fighters. They are all redish so he might used a different type films from usual ones.

There will be Pride and Shooto show on the same August 27th. I am curious which show Susumu is covering. I myself am going to Pride. My house sits between Tokyo Dome and Seibu Dome. It takes 30 minutes to go to Seibu by train.

And I should mention that an official Shooto book called Rumina 100% in which Susumu was involved very much has published here. I am going to introduce some photos from the book soon. You can buy it directly from Susumu as usual.

HOOKnSHOOT "Triumph"
August 19, 2000 - Memorial Coliseum - Evansville, Indiana

Those within driving distance from Evansville may want to make the trip to HnS this month. With an 8-man ADCC qualifier in the 66-76KG division, an unbelievable show is on tap along with some added suprizes!

Although nothing is "set in stone", HOOKnSHOOT has some serious names being tossed around the ADCC qualifier. With over 20 applicants, the choices being made are VERY difficult but the following names are being considered as POSSIBLE competitors in the field of eight:
  • DAN GILBERT. Runner-up to Dave Menne last year in the trials, only MMA loss to Frank Trigg after an illegal blow. Recently victorious in Shooto.
  • PAUL RODRIGUEZ. Currently ranked #1 in HnS. Recently fought in Shooto.
  • MATT SERRA. Renzo Gracie's top student and master grappler.
  • DENNIS HALLMAN. AMC Pankration standout. Competed in ADCC 2000.
These four alone are just the first four applicants so you can only imagine what is to follow.

Eight exciting bouts, along with two exhibition matches and a superfight that should excite makes for another potential, landmark show for HOOKnSHOOT who recently celebrated their 5th anniversary.

Among those scheduled to fight: Adrian Serrano vs. Joe Merit (IFC Champ), Phil Johns defends his title against Chris Gochis, Scott Henze, Kelly Williams vs. BIG Johnathan Ivey, Lane Andrews, Floriday standout Scott Bills and many others!

A new HnS Absolute Fighting Champion will be crowned as Aaron Riley and Steve Berger finally get their shot at the gold!

Riley, recently capturing his fifth championship in Harlingen, TX, brings his 75% knockout ratio to the ring in his first shot at the NHB title.

Berger, recently victorious in a 4-man tournament and a win at SFC this past weekend, is considered by many as a true champion and has NEVER been KO'd or tapped in MMA.

The Brazilian Beat
INTERNATIONAL MASTERS and SENIORS

Moreira Vs. Dorneles       One week after the World Jiu-Jitsu competition, fighters over 30 years old also had their opportunity to show how good they are in mat. The 2nd International Jiu-Jitsu Masters and Seniors that took place on August 5th at the Tijuca Tennis Club Gym in Rio de Janeiro was a complete success. Here are some quick results:
    Pinduka
  • Fernando Pinduka (Carlson), the man who first fought Marco Ruas in NHB (in 1986), submitted all of his opponents, winning in the heavy and open senior categories
  • Ricardo Libòrio (Brazilian Top Team) decided not to fight in the Worlds because of the death of his student, Jean Mesquita. One week later, Libòrio won the medium-heavy master category, defeating Flàvio Carneiro (21-0) and in the final Andrè King for a big point advantage
  • Murilo Bustamante (Brazilian TopTeam) submitted Ulisses Paixão and later Fàbio Clemente (6-0) getting the gold medal in heavy category master category
  • Murilo Ruppi (Brazilian TopTeam) defeated Pèricles Laudier (Alliance) in the final of the open master category.
  • Joe Moreira won a silver medal. He defeated Vale-Tudo fighter Bita (Gracie Barra) by 7-0 in the first match but got his guard passed by Guilherme Dorneles in the final getting.
  • Carlos Machado gave a show to the Brazilian public, winning his category and also the open category senior.
  • Marcus Vinìcius (Beverly Hills JJ) and Claudio França took two silver medals.
  • João Amèrico won his category, finishing all of his opponents, only losing to Pinduka in the absolute.

RIO DE JANEIRO STATE LUTA-LIVRE COMPETITION
Garden Yacht Club, Rio de Janeiro - July 31

Marcos sweeping Augusto       After Sheik Tahnoon invented the Abu Dhabi Combat Club, Combat Luta-Livre has grown more than ever in Rio de Janeiro. More than 350 fighters took part in the last Luta-Livre state competition. The event was more like a local competition, so the big names in the sport like Hugo Duarte, Eugenio Tadeu and Cacareco did not take part. Even though the top guys were not fighting, there were some great fights. In the black and brown belt category (70-75 kg.) Bruno Queroì (Hugo Duarte) lost to Andersom de Oliveira (Cromado) in a very exciting fight. Andersom passed the guard but almost tapped out twice (kimura armlock). "I always look for submission, I really don't care to lose by points" said Queròi.
Two athletes impressed me in the purple belt category, Luciano Azevedo (Cromado) in the under-70 kg. category and Alex Silva (Hugo Duarte) in the under-85 kg. category. Luciano easily defeated the excellent Jenjiscan Santos (Mario Miglioli) in the final 14-3. The fight was 2-2 when Jenjiscan got an inversion 3-2. At that point, Luciano decided to wake up, getting 2 points by a throw, 4 by passing the guard twice, 4 again by mount, and 4 more by getting his opponent's back, winning the category and celebrating crazily with his master Cromado.
Alex Silva (Hugo) also did a very nice job defeating the top fighter in the category, Fabiano (Màrio Miglioli) by 6-2 in the finals. With only 20 seconds remaining, Alex was losing 2-0. He got a sweep and mounted Fabiano changing the score to 6-2, winning the match and the gold medal. It was quite an accomplishment to beat the purple belt champ, who was undefeated for 2 years.
Prates       In the blue belt category, once again the 22-year old American wrestler Carlo Prates (Cromado DF team), who came to Brazil 4 years ago because of his father's Job (religion), did a nice job beating his friend Rodrigo Teletube in the final. "I lost in the last competition for not knowing the rules. Now I've learned that in Luta-Livre and Jiu-Jitsu, takedowns are not everything like they are in wrestling. I'm happy because I won this competition making points from the guard position" said the American. Prates intends to spend some time training with Pat Miletich in the U.S. and then come back to Brazil and open a wrestling school, and maybe in the future, "represent the yellow and green flag in the Olympics."
Màrcio Cromado did something that Jiu-Jitsu schools have been doing for a long time, he united his student Marcus' Brasìlia team with his school in Rio, making one team and winning the competition by total points.

Luta-Livre Belts and Fight time
  • White - 5 minutes
  • Yellow - 5 minutes
  • Blue - 5 minutes
  • Purple - 7 minutes
  • Brown - 10 minutes
  • Black - 10 minutes
Rules
  • 1 point - Inversion
  • 2 points - Throw, pass guard, sweep
  • 4 points - mount position, getting opponent's back
Extension (sudden death overtime) - If the fight is a draw at the end of regulation time, the first fighter to get a point is the winner.

WRESTLING IN RIO

Cacareco       Some years ago there was almost no wrestling in Brazil. The only person who taught that sport was Roberto Leitão, a Pan American gold medalist. After monsters like Kerr and Coleman showed the value of wrestling in Vale-Tudo events, Jiu-Jitsu and Luta-Livre people started to become interested and many famous fighters started to look for Leitão's Academy. The results could be seen last weekend (August 5th), where top Jiu-Jitsu players like Vìtor Shaolin (world jiu-jitsu champion in the pena category), Cacareco (#1 Luta-Livre fighter), Renato Babalù (Rings Vale-Tudo champion) and Antoine Braga (champion heavyweight in the Arabian league ADCC 2000) took part in the competition at the ACM Gym in Rio de Janeiro. Babalu After defeating his first opponent, Vale-Tudo fighter Alexandre Cacareco from Luta-Livre lost in the finals to Luìs Fernandes (Ruas Team) by 9-7. Vìtor Shaolin defeated two opponents, winning the finals 12-3. At the end of the event, Leitão put on a superfight between the two best Brazilian wrestlers, Renato Babalù and Antoine Braga. Braga won 3-0.

IFC FIGHTING HITS THE TROPICANA
First event of its kind comes to Atlantic City

The extreme in fighting sports explodes onto the Atlantic City fight scene on Saturday, September 30th when the International Fighting Championships comes to the Tropicana Casino and Resort with IFC BATTLEGROUND 2000. This ultimate crossover fighting sport features the best fighters of the combat sports - boxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu, karate, kickboxing, jeet kune do, judo, tae kwon do, sambo, ninja and others - utilizing the best techniques from all of those sports while fighting in a caged ring.

IFC BATTLEGROUND 2000 will feature two world title fights - the IFC World Heavyweight (195lbs to 225lbs) Championship between current champion Vernon "Tiger" White and former IFC champion "The Janitor" Vladimir Matyushenko and the IFC World Super Heavyweight (225lbs plus) Championship between current champion "Big" Gan McGee and North American Super Heavyweight Champion "Bad" Brad Gabriel. There will also be two four man single elimination tournaments plus preliminary matches for a total of ten fights that night.

The main event will be the highly anticipated World Heavyweight Championship. This will be a rubber match between these two great athletes. Matyushenko of Belarus is a world class wrestler and former Soviet National Champion. White of San Diego is a Tae Kwon Do champion who has taken on some of the best martial artists in the world today. White is trained by well-known ultimate fighter, Ken Shamrock. In their first meeting in Baton Rouge, La. in September of 1997 Matyushenko completely dominated the fight and went on to win the IFC Heavyweight title. In a rematch in Montreal in October of 1999 White outfought Matyushenko to win a controversial split decision. This war in Montreal was considered by many fight fans to be one of the best fights ever. Up until that decision, which he still disputes, Matyushenko was undefeated. Still considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world, Matyushenko, with his "ground and pound' style now seeks to revenge his sole loss against the confident and skillful White. Expect this fight to become another war of attrition between these two outstanding fighters.

In the semi-main event "Big" Gan McGee puts his IFC World Super Heavyweight Championship belt on the line for the first time against North American Super Heavyweight Champion, "Bad" Brad Gabriel. McGee of San Luis Obispo, CA is another world class wrestler making a name for himself in the IFC. He is a former NCAA champion who stands 6'10' and weighs in at 303 pounds. He is undefeated in IFC style fighting. Gan will both out weigh and out reach Canada's "Bad" Brad Gabriel who is also undefeated. Brad is a former member of the Canadian National Tae Kwon Team and an undefeated kickboxer known for his power. Brad stands 6'1" and weighs in at 246 pounds.

Exciting? You bet it is! This is the new fighting sport for the new millennium with kicks, punches, throws and submission holds. The IFC open style fighting events have generated huge interest among fight and martial arts fans and have rekindled interest in the age old question of which fighting discipline is the most effective and which individual is truly the greatest fighter in the world. When the cage door slams shut, there's no where to run and no place to hide!

IFC Battleground 2000 is promoted by D. Benjamin Brown Productions and is sanctioned by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board. The event will be broadcast around the world. Tickets begin at $25 and are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets.

It's the IFC, it's in Atlantic City and it's real!

Jesus Is Lord Has A New Gym!
By Chris Onzuka

Chris@Onzuka.com

Jesus Is Lord Gym Believe it or not, the group of fighters out of Hawaii that call themselves the Jesus Is Lord Team achieved their successes training out of a high school wrestling room. Their success is highlighted by Ray "Bradda" Cooper's #1 ranking for the Shooto Middleweight Championship, currently held by Hayato Sakurai. Cooper has just signed with Superstar Sports & Entertainment Agency. SSEA will be managing Cooper and has built a brand new gym for the Jesus Is Lord team. The gym is a far cry from the old wrestling room that they had spent many nights training in. It is nearly 4,000 square feet of space containing a brand new wrestling mat, measuring 27' X 30', allowing them ample area to grapple.

Jesus Is Lord Gym The new gym also includes a brand new boxing ring that measures 20' X 20', because Jesus Is Lord primarily fights in FutureBrawl, which utilizes a ring instead of a cage. This allows the Jesus Is Lord team the ability to train in and get a firm grasp of the space and dynamics of the ring. The gym is also equipped with 4 heavy bags, 1 uppercut bag, 1 banana bag, 2 double-ended bags, and 2 speed bags. The gym currently has one weight bench, but plans are in the works for cardio equipment, which include 2 stairmasters, 2 treadmills, and 2 ski machines. They are also going to add more weight equipment and, get this...whirlpools! The gym also includes an office and bathrooms.

Jesus Is Lord Gym Most of the Jesus Is Lord team have families that are very supportive of their training and regularly accompany the fighters to their workouts, so they even have a romper room for the kids. And believe me, it's no secret why these guys are in such good shape, if after their workouts they go chasing after all those kids at home! Lastly, they are also planning on installing showers. This gym currently has just the essentials, but will soon have it all. If these guys showed such success training in the spartan facilities of the high school wrestling room, can you imagine the results they are going to have with this kind of set up? I am currently finishing an interview with Ray "Bradda" Cooper, an excerpt of which, I will post to give FCF readers preview of the full interview which will appear in the next issue.

Winner: Willett by injury default (3:00)

  • Kickboxing
Nick Saysonay (AMC) vs. Brian Johnston (CCMA)
If only the first round was the indicator, Saysonay looked as if he was going to win the fight. Unfortunately, he was out of gas going into the rest of the rounds and Johnston mounted a precision low leg and punching attack that frustrated Nick and resulted in an easy win.
    Winner: Johnston by unanimous decision

  • Class "A" Pankration

Winner: Fleming by submission (5:44 ankle lock)

  • Class "A" Pankration
Bill Olson (Pearson's BBA) vs. Jeremy Norton (Oak Harbor MA)
More heavyweight action with explosive, crowd pleasing techniques: Norton opens the fight with a devestating leg kick immediately followed by a spinning back heel kick that catches Olson on the chin. In the 2nd round Norton falls after doing a back kick. Olson quickly capitalizes on the off-balance competitor and gains control.
Winner: Olson by submission (2:15 entangled arm)

  • Kickboxing
Jeremy Engle (Travis Kickboxing) vs. Jeremy Pidgeon (CCMC)
This bout is all Pidgeon as the Everett fighter presses the fight and attacks Engle for 3 rounds. Featuring a solid 1-2 punch, Pidgeon's right hand punishes Engle all fight long.
    Winner: Pidgeon by unanimous decision

  • Class "A" Pankration
Landon Showalter (Pearson's BBA) vs. Drew Goodson (Anacortes MA)
Goodson comes out early and catches Showalter with a couple of stiff right hands. Showalter neutralizes the punches by clinching in the 2nd round and delivering devastating knees to the body. In the 3rd round Goodson tries to escape the clinch by going down to the mat with the guard. Showalter passes the guard, mounts and slams Goodson's head against the canvas with his chest.
    Winner: Showalter by submission
(7:44 tap out after repeated slams from the mount)

  • Middle Weight Pankration Tournament Championship:
    Joey Guel (AMC) 190lbs 4-0-1 vs. Randy Corely (Pearson's BBA) 185lbs 3-3

K-1 Star Andy Hug Dead At 35

Kickboxing Champion Andy Hug died from an acute form of leukemia yesterday. Although Hug was reportedly training for the K-1 finals in December in Tokyo, his last match was in July. After the fight, he was reportedly not feeling well and sought time off, cancelling his match in the K-1 USA show earlier this month in Las Vegas. He went home to Switzerland, beset by nausea and nosebleeds. He returned to Japan and was admitted to Nippon Medical School Hospital with a high fever last Saturday. His condition deteriorated rapidly after being admitted to the hospital. He was diagnosed with leukemia and began chemotherapy treatment. Hug began having severe heart and circulation problems, followed by a cerebral hemorrhage and a lung infection, according to Swiss newspaper Blick. He reportedly went into a coma on Wednesday and passed away yesterday. Family and friends were at his bedside when he passed.

Our condolences go out to Andy Hug's family and friends.

Ray "Bradda" Cooper
Is Looking For Opponents

By Chris Onzuka

Chris@Onzuka.com

Ray Bradda Cooper Ray Cooper has been making a name for himself in FutureBrawl by dispatching each opponent by knock out in an impressive fashion. FutureBrawl's collaboration with Shooto has provided the opportunity for a championship title for Cooper. He has set his sights on the Shooto Middleweight Championship. There is only one thing between Cooper and the Shooto title, the seemingly undefeatable Hayato "Mach" Sakurai. In the meantime, Cooper has been itching to gain more experience, but has had trouble getting the word out to promoters. The WEF's Jamie Levine finally stepped up to the plate and arranged a match-up against "Twinkle Toes" Frank Trigg. This should be an exciting match with two very aggressive fighters who always have explosive performances, making them fan favorites.

FCF:   What have you been up to?
Ray "Bradda" Cooper:     I fought in Japan against Jutaro Nakao in January, so it's kind of a long lay off. I have been training and looking for fights, just getting ready for the next fight.

Ray Bradda Cooper FCF:   You said that you wanted to stay active this year, but ended up doing just the opposite, even after that big win against Nakao. What happened?
RC:     I guess that some of the promoters had a misunderstanding with whom I was under. I was never under any management until recently. I guess that I have not been communicating with much people outside of SuperBrawl. I was just hanging out, waiting for SuperBrawl and not getting contacts off the island and with Shooto. We have been more active now, trying to get into more circuits.

FCF:   So you are still actively looking for fights?
RC:     Yeah, we are trying to get fights every 6-8 weeks. That's what we're looking for.

FCF:   You have a big fight lined up. You are scheduled to fight Frank Trigg in the WEF. How did that fight come about?
RC:     We got in touch with the WEF and another fight fell through [previously at the same event], so they called us back and said that they needed a fighter for Frank Trigg and I was ready to fight, so we took the fight.

FCF:   Give us an update on the Jesus Is Lord team.
RC:     Just about all of our fighters are ready to fight. Ronald [Jhun] is ready to fight and Stephen "Bozo" Palling…just about everyone, but nothing is signed yet. Things are still in negotiations right now.

FCF:   Thank you.
RC:     Thanks Chris.

*Ray "Bradda" Cooper or the Jesus Is Lord team can be reached by calling the Superstar Sports & Entertainment Agency and his manager Adrian Silva at (808) 682-9595 or via email at SuperstarsHI@aol.com.

Hammer House's Newest Superhero...
Big Daddy

By Tom DeFazio

Rickson and Gary "Big Daddy" Gary Goodridge is currently in Tokyo, in a few hours he will be fighting Gilbert Yvel in Pride 10. I got a hold of Gary to talk about the fight and his new training alliance with Mark Coleman.

FCF:   Big Daddy, what's up? How are you doing?
GG:     I'm alright.

FCF:   How are you feeling for the fight with Yvel?
GG:     I feel great, just going over shit in my head watching Demi Moore in GI Jane.

FCF:   You're watching Demi Moore and you're thinking about the fight?!?! To each their own I guess, I'd be thinking about other stuff watching her. So, how's the training going? You've been training with Mark Coleman. How'd that come about?
GG:     Well, you know what? We've been toying with the idea for a few years and he, as well as myself, noticed a hole in my armor. So I decided I needed to stop myself from being taken down, I need to learn that at an Olympic level. I need to learn that as much as I can, as well as utilize taking people down. For instance, when I'm fighting someone, maybe I'll decide...Well, hell, it would be easier for me and safer for me to take them down and "GP" them...Ground-and-Pound them. So that's how that came about. We've always kept in touch, we've always talked to each other, I've always called Mark and he's always called me throughout the years. Before the Pride Grand Prix, I asked him to work together. I said, "Let's start working together and join our forces, 'cause everyone else is." We're on the same side of the globe, he lives pretty much just straight south of me. I said, "You know, you're just 6 hours away, we could be training together." So, he didn't want to before the Pride Grand Prix because he thought we'd be fighting each other. But yeah, I'm training with him and Kevin Randleman and Brandon Lee Hinkle and a couple other wrestlers that he has there.

FCF:   How long have you been training with Coleman?
GG:     3 weeks. But that's 3 workouts a day for 3 weeks.

FCF:   I know his workouts are intense. Have you dropped weight from these workouts?
GG:     I dropped weight down from 252...I was in good shape before I started training with Mark. Actually, I was in good fighting shape. I went from 252 to 240 in 3 weeks.

FCF:   Are you pretty ripped?
GG:    I don't think I could ever get ripped. [both laugh] I'm in pretty good shape.

FCF:   How do you see your fight with Yvel going?
GG:     With Yvel? You know, I'm really not sure how that's gonna go. I'll probably knock him out on his feet, because that is my strength, I'd like to do that. If I find that he's just too busy with his legs and knees...and I want to stay away from his feet, because it's easy to kick somebody out in stand-up, not being at a distance to punch...if I notice that's what's happening off the bat, then we're going to the ground and I'll crush him.

FCF:   You see no problem taking him down?
GG:     No, I don't expect any problems taking him down.

FCF:   Do you see his style as at all similar to Rizzo's?
GG:     Um, no, not really...I don't know, I haven't really watched this kid [Yvel]. I hear that he's a really wild, spontaneous, non-thinking fighter...just go. I'll have to wait and see what I'm given, whatever I'm given, I'll have to work with. I really don't see me losing, but you know, then again, anything can happen.

FCF:   Are you gonna continue training with Mark after this fight?
GG:     Yeah, we've talked about it. We came up with an agreement before we started training, we decided, "Hey, we'll never fight each other if we're gonna train together." Because I'm part of the Hammer House now; he inducted me into the Hammer House. The Hammer House has 3 superheroes now...Kevin RandleMAN, ColeMAN, and Superman [Big Daddy has a Superman Tattoo on his arm].

FCF:   So, you'll keep training with Mark and the guys for your upcoming fight with Rizzo in the UFC?
GG:     The fight with Rizzo…I'm still waiting to solidify things with what I'm gonna be doing with Rizzo in the UFC. I hear and see all over the Internet, as well as in Japan here, that I'm fighting Rizzo...I'm waiting to sign an agreement, because the UFC is trying to marry me to only fighting for them and I can't when I've already signed a 2-year contract with Pride. So there have been a lot of revisions made, and they haven't been in touch with me since.

FCF:   You're still waiting for an updated contract from the UFC?
GG:     I'm still waiting for an updated contract, I'm waiting to make sure that the money is there...and if we agree upon that…to me it's a done deal, but I'm still waiting for certain things to be met...so it's not a done deal because it's not signed, see what I'm saying?

FCF:   Anything you'd like to add?
GG:     Hmmm, well, I'm looking for a sponsor in terms of a supplement sponsor that I can get supplements, so I don't have to spend millions of dollars…I'm spending too much money on supplements. Plus I opened up my own business. Freight brokeraging, storage, import/export, stuff like that. I'd like to push the business, G & G Freight Systems located in Barie, Ontario. Phone number (705) 721-3363. E-mail address is GGLogistics@on.aibn.com.

From the event's promoter:
Hoffman steals the show
at Extreme Challenge 36

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- There were many highlights at the most recent edition of the Extreme Challenge... a 5-second knockout, some solid submissions, and a couple solid ground-and-pound wars.
However, when Bobby Hoffman unleashes his fury, everything else seems tame by comparison.
Hoffman, the Extreme Challenge heavyweight champion, made his fourth and final defense of his title a memorable one. He delivered a powerful and dominating performance in beating Greg Wikan in the main event of Extreme Challenge XXXVI outside at John O'Donnell Stadium. The intensity of the victory left the crowd stunned and stadium officials had to twice ask spectators to please exit the area as the show was over.
Wikan, who recently fared well in the RINGS USA show in Orem, Utah, was able to avoid Hoffman's powerful standup attack, but found himself helpless as Hoffman took him to the ground, passed the guard and began landing HUGE knees to the head from the side... it brought back memories of the Severn-Taktarov bout except Hoffman's knees were mostly to the back of the head.
When Wikan finally tapped, Hoffman leaped up and quickly got into a heated exchange with Wikan's cornerman... Hoffman, in his usual wild style, repeatedly offered the cornerman a chance to come into the cage and avenge his fighter... right then and there. Cooler heads prevailed and the show ended with fans showing a look of amazement at what had just happened.
"I don't know what it is... sometimes I just can't turn the emotion off," Hoffman said. "I get so keyed up for the fight that I can't just stop... I know I'm a little crazy, but it's all part of the way I fight."
      The official time was 3:43.
Hoffman must relinquish his title when he competes Sept. 22 against Maurice Smith in the UFC. Extreme Challenge rules provide that only up-and-coming fighters who compete in the event regularly be ranked and hold titles. Once a fighter reaches the UFC level, he gives up his spot so that other fighters can compete for the ranking or title.
Although it was the high note, Hoffman's win was far from the only bright spot of the event, which was held near the backstop of the 10,000-seat stadium used by the Class A Quad City River Bandits.
Extreme veteran Dennis Reed caught everybody by surprise when he took two steps and landed a perfect straight right hand that KO'd James Terrill of Dayton, Ohio, in an amazing 5 seconds! It was the quickest win in EC history, eclipsing the 9-second KO of Shonie Carter by LaVerne Clark in EC III.
Another up-and-coming fighter is Joe Doerksen of Winnipeg, Manitoba. He won the 200-pound tourney by beating UFC veteran Adrian Serrano with an American at 2:17 and Mark Waters in the final by rear choke at 2:34. Doerksen's only losses are to Matt Hughes and Eugene Jackson.
In the tourney, Mark Hughes, twin brother of UFC star Matt Hughes, captured the title with a 15-minute unanimous decision over Matt Torrez in the final. Torrez is a student of UFC veteran Noe Hernandez. In the first round, Hughes bested Andrew Neil of Bolton, Ontario, by punches at 1:29.
One of the more exciting fights of the night was a feature bout that saw EC lightweight champion Ben Earwood improve to 16-2 with an armbar victory over a tough Rich Clementi of Slidell, La., in 8:32. Earwood used his wrestling background to keep the fight on the ground and punched well from the mount and dominated position before securing the submission.
Jason Black (4-0) remained undefeated with a head-arm choke submission in 6:35 over Brian Fulton, brother of "NHB ironman" Travis Fulton.
The next Extreme Challenge is scheduled Oct. 14 in Sioux City, Iowa.
