From the event's promoter:
Hoffman Thrills Extreme Fans With Bloody Victory

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Two bus loads of fans from Bobby Hoffman's hometown of Centerville, Iowa, made the trip to see Extreme Challenge 35 at the RiverCenter.
They weren't disappointed as Hoffman, the Extreme Challenge heavyweight champion, successfully defended his title by pounding former UFC fighter Sam Adkins in the main event. A smashing shot broke Adkins' nose at the 2:25 mark of the first round and the ring doctor halted the bout as Adkins' face was almost completely covered in blood.
"I'm satisfied with the win," Hoffman said. "Adkins is a quality opponent and I know he's a good striker,so I wanted to get him down and pound him."
Hoffman, 14-2 in NHB, will compete in RINGS USA in Orem, Utah. on July 15. He also is scheduled to make his UFC debut on Sept. 22.
In one of the most bloody Extreme Challenges in recent memory, Phil Johns captured the EC junior lightweight title with a unanimous decision win over Tony DeDolph. Johns controlled the bout, especially the first two rounds, by scoring repeated takedowns and landing punches. DeDolph, who was cut in a couple places on his face, fared better in the third round, reopening a cut on Johns' forehead that left both fighters covered in blood.
In other key battles, 4-time UFC winner LaVerne Clark tapped Xtreme Shootout champion Cedric Marks with a choke at 3:24 of the second round. Clark, the WEF lightweight champion, scored some big slams and kept the fight on the ground against Marks, who put up a solid struggle.
UFC regulars Jeremy Horn, Matt Hughes and Joe Slick also notched victories.
Horn controlled the opening round against Jason Allar, but failed to complete a choke as time expired. He then landed a kick to Allar's face that broke his nose only 3 seconds into the second round. Allar, who KO'd UFC vet Brad Kohler in his last bout, motioned to the ref to halt the bout.
Hughes said prior to his fight with Joe Guist that he planned to work on his standup skills in preparation for his RINGS Japan bout on Aug. 23. He did just that, often standing up out of the guard to work more on his strikes. He eventually won the bout with an armbar at 2:45.
Slick, who was getting back in the ring after losing on a late cut in UFC Japan, landed two solid knees to the head of Gary Hughes (no relation) at the 1:50 mark and won by tapout.
Nate Schroeder, who lost in his UFC debut last month, rebounded to win by injury when Aaron Pendleton suffered a broken ankle while being taken down. Pendleton's foot got caught underneath him and the ankle popped.
In other bouts, Rich Franklin of WEF fame armbarred Dennis Reed and C.J. Fernandez, an up-and-coming lightweight, TKO'd Pat Bullard (another broken nose). Brian Dunn, a tricky lightweight who owns a win over Clark, guillotined Clayton Miller to improve to 26-3.
Mark Hughes, the twin brother of Matt, did not get to fight when his opponent, Dan Conner, failed to show. No-showing is Conner's greatest talent -- he's done it to almost every show in the Midwest -- and he has been barred from Extreme Challenge forever (like he ever planned to show up).
"This guy calls and begs me to give him a chance... I mean pleads... he's even had his wife call me," promoter Monte Cox said. "I finally gave him a chance and the day before the show he blocks my emails to him. This guy needs some serious help...he's a true whacko."
The show was taped by JTV Productions from Utah... the same group that does WEF and also will work the 2000 Olympics. Tapes should be available in about two weeks.

Complete results:
C.J. Fernandex def. Pat Bullar, 3:03 TKO
Brian Dunn def. Clayton Miller, 1:21 guillotine
LaVerne Clark def. Cedric Marks, 8:24 front choke
Nate Schroeder def. Aaron Pendleton, 2:11 ankle injury
Rich Franklin def. Dennis Reed, 1:56 armbar
Joe Slick def. Gary Hughes, 1:50 knees to head
Jeremy Horn def. Jason Allar, 5:03 kick to head
Matt Hughes def. Joe Guist, 2:45 armbar

EC junior lightweight title
Phil Johns def. Tony DeDolph, 15:00 unanimous decision

EC heavyweight title
Bobby Hoffman def. Sam Adkins, 2:25 doctor stop (broken nose)

UPDATE...
NEWLYWEDS TITO AND KRISTIN ORTIZ
ON THE MEND AFTER BEING HIT BY BUS!

By Joel Gold

Tito Ortiz UFC middleweight champ Tito Ortiz on the second day of his honeymoon in Bermuda was struck by a bus as he tooled around the island with his wife aboard a moped. Ortiz, not used to driving on the opposite (left) side of the road as is done on the island, forgot to look to the right while entering a road and was struck by a tour bus moving at an estimated speed of 25 mph. Tito was sent flying, while his wife was dragged 8 ft by the bus. Tito at first was told he might have a broken foot, but when got back in the states, he found that not to be true. "I have some ligament damage to my ankle and some road rash, that itches like a mother! My wife received 3 broken ribs and 4 fractured vertebrae in the lower back, but she is walking around now."

The couple flew back to the states on a private jet at a cost of $25,000 so as not to take any chances with Kristin's health. After Tito assured me all was okay with his wife and himself, I asked him if he would still fight in the upcoming UFC. "I will start training next week and I can't wait!" I asked if he knew who his opponent would be, he responded, "The name Dan Henderson was mentioned, but I doubt that will happen. It will be tough to get an opponent for me now...if a bus can't knock me out, then who will?"

"NO HOLDS BARRED" ON EYADA SPORTS,
THE WEEK OF JULY 3 - 7:

by Eddie Goldman

"No Holds Barred" can be heard every Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 PM New York time (Eastern Time - U.S.), only on eYada.com (http://www.eyada.com).

Eddie Goldman Monday, July 3 -- EYada is closed this Monday and Tuesday for the July 4th Independence Day holiday in the USA, so there will be archived programming these days. Today's show will be a repeat of the show of Monday, June 26, which featured a discussion of Mike Tyson's latest controversial fight; a report from the King of the Cage 4 show with Jeff Thaler; a live report from Japan about the latest Pancrase show with Phyllis Lee; and a report by me about the 2000 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials held in Dallas, as well as taped interviews with new Olympian Kerry McCoy and a brief talk with former wrestler and coach Rep. Dennis Hastert, the current Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Tuesday, July 4 -- Today all of eYada will be featuring an all-day marathon of Dave Meltzer's pro wrestling show "Wrestling Observer Live," but you still can hear archives of "No Holds Barred" by going to the eYada.com web page.

Wednesday, July 5 -- After reviewing the news of the past few days, we will talk with Kipp Kollar, president of the North American Grappling Association, who will preview this coming Saturday's Rhode Island Vale Tudo, as well as review the 2000 World Submission Grappling Championships held on Saturday, June 24, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Also, in a segment postponed from last week, we talk to Steve Nelson about the USWF's return on July 8 to Amarillo, and the victory at the Olympic Wrestling Trials of Amarillo native Brandon Slay, who is believed to be the first Texas wrestler to make a U.S. Olympic wrestling team.

Thursday, July 6 -- We have had many requests for the interviews I taped at the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials in Dallas, and today we will play them all. They include the post-match press conference and an interview with Kerry McCoy; USA Wrestling announcer Sandy Stevens recreating her witty introduction to the Olympic Trials; former wrestler and coach Rep. Dennis Hastert, the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, on the importance of wrestling; wrestler Dominic Black, whose injury in the Trials' finals kept him from getting a shot at an Olympic berth; new Greco-Roman Olympians Steven Mays and Garrett Lowney; and the post-match press conference with Terry Brands as well as comments from Mike Chapman of the International Wrestling Institute and Museum as well as Terry's twin brother, 1996 gold medalist Tom Brands.

Friday, July 7 -- Since I will be flying today to Amarillo, Texas, for Saturday's USWF show, we will repeat the show of last Friday, June 30, during which we spoke to USWF president and heavyweight champion Evan Tanner; reviewed the June 29 Heavyweight Explosion boxing card in New York; and had the "Queen of the UFC," Paula Romero, in the studio to give out some studied opinions as well as some UFC goodies. This show ended up being one of the wackiest and unplanned ones we have done to date, so don't miss it.

Talon Challenge 2
Texas' hottest new promotion has just added a great main event! Aaron Steagle captivated the audience at the last Talon Challenge with unbelievable throws and power to eventually go on to win by submission. The same night he captured the Most Outstanding Fighter Award presented to him by HCF (a group called HardCore Fans of MMA). He showed phenominal potential and is definitely upping his test of skills. Aaron Riley, the current WEF Lightweight Champion, Texas Shootout Champion and HOOKnSHOOT fighter, will return to Texas in his first match since March of this year. Riley has taken a long layoff to train and expects a hard match. "I just love Texas an it's a good opportunity to see how far I've came in the last few months with my training", says an eager Riley who admits he's getting a little anxious to get back into the ring and is NOT taking Steagle lightly. The should be an incredible superfight on a card full of action. Also on the show, "RUTHLESS" Ruth Mejia, fighting out of Team Benevidas located in Mercedes, TX. The scrappy 109 lb. Mejia will be making her MMA debut and hopes to have a good showing and move on to bigger and better things. Along with a 4-man SUPERHEAVYWEIGHT tournament, Jeff Osborne, promoter of HOOKnSHOOT, is also scheduled to fight. For ticket and show information call (956) 867-7500. Talon 2 poster Talon 2 poster

From Monte Cox:

Horn, TK join 'strikers' in RINGS USA

OREM, Utah -- In general, the rules for RINGS favor the strikers over the grapplers. So, it comes as no surprise that the first-ever RINGS USA event, scheduled July 15 at the McKay Center in Orem, Utah, features some big punchers.
However, the most recognizable fighters taking part in the "Rising Stars" event are Jeremy Horn and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka (TK), both 5-time UFC veterans and predominantly submission grapplers.
"RINGS rules takes so getting used to," said Horn, who is 1-2 in that style. "You have to look at things differently... you can't just go out, look for the takedown, pass the guard and get the mount... that doesn't mean as much as in NHB. You have to control the opponent throughout and hold your own on your feet."
RINGS rules permit punches, kicks, knees and elbows while standing, but only punches to the body on the ground. Grappling also is limited if position is not being improved.
Half of the 16-fighter field (8-man brackets in 2 weight divisions -- 200-under and heavyweight) has UFC experience. Six competitors have competed in previous RINGS events.
Besides Horn and TK, fighters with UFC experience include Keith Mielke, Jermaine Andre, Tyrone Roberts and Trent Jenkins in the 200-under; and Travis Fulton and Harry Moskowitz in the heavyweights.
Horn, TK, Roberts, Fulton, Bobby Hoffman and Chris Haseman have RINGS experience.
Keeping with the international flavor of RINGS, fighters will represent 3 countries other than the U.S... TK of Japan; Haseman of Australia; and Victor Burtsev of Russia.
The second half of the RINGS USA: Rising Stars event is scheduled for July 22 in Honolulu. Four fighters (2 from each weight division) will advance from each event, making up two Final Four tourneys on Sept. 30 in Moline, Ill.

Extreme Trials returns to Clinton, Iowa

The Extreme Trials, one of the most popular amateur events in the Midwest, is scheduled for Saturday, July 29, at the Pig Pen in Clinton, Iowa.
There will be 5 weight divisions (150-under, 170-under, 190-under, 210-under, and heavyweight) with each division winner earning a berth in the 2000 U.S. Mixed Martial Arts National Championships in December. Winners at the nationals receive pro deals to compete in Furute Brawl, Extreme Challenge or USWF events.
Extreme Trials begin at 2 p.m. and will be held outside at the Pig Pen, a popular local tavern. Cost to compete is $25 in advance and $30 the week of the show.
In past events, as many as 60 competitors took part in the event.
The fighter hotel will be the Super 8, which is located next to the Pig Pen on hwy. 30... Mention the Extreme Trials and fighters will get a $48 rate for a double room. Rooms are limited, so make arraangements early by calling 319 242-8870.
To enter, call 319 650-8585 or 319 332-2075 to get an application. Because this is an open tourney, all fighters will be accepted, as long as they have no more than three professional bouts.

DAVE MENNE TALKS ABOUT HIS VICTORY
AT WORLD EXTREME FIGHTING IX

With Joel Gold

From the June issue of Full Contact Fighter

Dave Menne talks with "The Mouth Of NHB" after his grueling victory over Pele Landi of Brazil, in World Extreme Fighting [WEF] IX...

Tell me a little about the game plan going into the fight.
Dave Menne Game plan for my fight with Pele was like...you had said to me that I was a slow starter and some other people have said that I was as well. So I wanted to try and push it a little bit more or try to hit him first. My game plan was to work the inside of his thigh because his stance is kind of wide and he leaves it open and he tries to drop those rights. I wanted to stay out of range. Everyone says how fast he is, but I watched a few of his tapes and I thought I could hit him, frustrate him and make him try to rush in on me. That's what I was going to do. I was going to try and hit him on the inside of the thigh make him make a mistake, get him on the ground instead of me having to try to take him down. I wanted to frustrate him a little bit, so he wanted to break the distance.

Did your strategy work for you?
I don't know, I have to see the tape. What I remember was...the first kick I threw was in the inside of the thigh, and then after that we went down to the ground off the clinch. I wanted to try a double, but I wasn't going to double and then I got the inside trip on him when he clinched in on me. It went to the ground at some point-I had his leg, but I don't remember at what point.

You rolled into the leg for what appeared a knee-bar at first, then went for the foot, but could not secure the lock.
Dave Menne I didn't have a knee-bar at all. He was off to the side. What I did have was a figure-four on the leg. I could've readjusted to try to reset the knee-bar, but I didn't want to give up position and create a scramble, so I was going to just try and isolate the ankle and try to break the ankle.

Why do you think you could not get him to tap? Was it not secure or was he just one of those guys with amazing pain tolerance?
It just wouldn't break. I heard it tearing a little bit, not the usual where I pop people's ankles and all of a sudden it goes pop, pop. I could hear it straining and ripping slightly, but I couldn't get the pop. I don't know if it was the glove-sometimes gloves will hinder you a little bit with your grip and your ability to get the right angle on him, but I just kept working that ankle, just kept pushing it. My corner was yelling at me not to use all my energy, so I was kind of conscious of that a little bit. I didn't want to work for two minutes pulling and then have no pulling muscles left, but I just couldn't get the break on it.

When the first round ended and you went to your corner, what was the feeling?
I had some confidence. I was a little winded, but I got my second wind in the second round, early into the second round.

There is a lot of hype about Pele being one of the best fighters in the weight class. What do you feel?
I think his biggest thing is he tries everything he can to cut a guy. He's got a good body type and he is explosive, but I don't see him as being some incredible unstoppable sensation. He hit me once hard in the third round. I don't think I ever felt threatened. I got hit that one time, but beyond that I wasn't ever scared.

Give me an overview of how things went for you.
I thought I was doing well at frustrating him, not allowing him to dictate the pace. He wanted me to come in on him and I would play off of that. In the second round, I acted more tired than I was. I was trying to bait him in making it look like I was getting gassed, so he would come in on me...I see that's what he does a lot in his fights it seems. He'll move back a lot. He'll retreat, pull a guy in to him and work that head kick...I thought that was one of his biggest threats as far as the possibility of a knockout because he throws it really loose and he doesn't telegraph it at all. I was trying to play the space, not allowing that to happen and I wished I would've worked the inside of the hands a little more prior to the fight. I would've liked to work the uppercuts and the elbows more which I thought he was open for. I got him with a couple of uppercuts--I think he is open for it. I could've capitalized on it more or I thought I could've.

You told me before the fight you were looking to use elbows, mainly during a clinch...
I was trying to work on the up elbow and a down elbow. I was trying to set his chin up; I couldn't get under his clinch. I started uppercutting him because I couldn't get the elbow through. I uppercutted him twice. I thought...sometimes on the clinch he'll pull his hand low-I was working with Pat in the back room on pulling down on the guy's arms, opening up for an elbow.

How did your plan work for you in the clinch?
I was weaving my arms in between his 'cause I knew he was trying to bring his knee up to cut me. So, I was trying to pull his arms down enough to try and drop an elbow and break the clinch, and also to cover his knees. So I kind of weaved my hand over his and set it there because all his knees were going to do is hit my forearms.

I was working the elbow and I was really conscious of blocking his knees. I was looking for any opportunity in that situation to strike, but the major...or first reason that I chose to do that is to stop him from getting a lucky knee. Like if I got lazy or if I am not paying attention or something, if my arm is there, then I can concentrate on working my knees to his body. I can figure out how to get a takedown. If I don't have to worry about his knee and if my hands weaved in there, I'd be blocking that assault. It gives me the opportunity to work on offense.

At one point he landed a kick to your head, did that faze you?
The kick to the head didn't faze me, I don't think.

When the fight had ended and you were waiting to hear the decision, did you think you had won the fight?
Dave Menne I thought I had won the fight. I thought there might be overtime. My corner said if it goes to a decision, I won and they were pretty adamant about it. I had thought I had won the first round, for sure. I didn't know about the second round, I thought it was close and the third round, I thought I had won. Of course I understand there are different views and different judges. That is the way I felt about it. There might be an overtime. My corner pretty much said the same thing to me. I go, "Did I win the fight?" They said, "Yeah you won, if it goes to the cards, you won." They said, "Be ready for an overtime." So I was confident that I was winning. I was confident that if it did go to an overtime that I was going win. I thought I had endurance and I don't see that he was in a position where he could push the fight to me. I didn't see that he was ever taking the fight to me. I don't know if he didn't have the strength or wasn't prepared for it. As far as creating an offensive, I felt I had a superior offense. Basically the only thing he was trying to do...he threw a couple of combos or threw one or two, but when I pressed the fight I usually took it to him. That is how I saw it.

Was this your biggest victory to date in your fight career?
I would say it is definitely the biggest victory all on a scale. Every victory like this opens up doors. At the time, the Nakao (SuperBrawl 11) victory was a pretty big deal. He is a lot more popular and it is a larger scale fight, but the Nakao victory also opened up a lot of doors at that time...fighting in Japan, and people starting to look at you a little more seriously. Because of the UFC and some other fights, I was starting to get a little more press, but I know this opens up a lot more doors. It is kind of like a sliding scale; it just opens up more doors.

Have you heard anything from Japan about fighting Jutaro Nakao again?
I haven't heard anything from Japan about fighting Nakao again.

This is the second fight that you have beaten fighters that have beaten UFC Champ, Pat Miletich. Do people call you his big brother?
No! Well, Pat has given me shit about it [laughing]. I have heard that people say stuff about it, but they don't say it to me. Most of the people we know are all fighters and they understand.

What's up next Champ?
June 15, the Rings fight in Japan--I don't know my opponent. I spoke to Monte Cox and he is setting that up and then I have the July Rings USA in Hawaii in a tournament in a weight class up from mine-It is 200 and under. I weighed 176 for my fight with Pele. That is it for now.

Menne drew with Yasuhito Namekawa on June 15th. Menne received a yellow card in the bout.

IRONHEART CROWN RETURNS TO CHICAGO
By Chris Onzuka

IHC Poster (CHICAGO, IL) - The date is set. November 4, 2000, the Ironheart Crown will return to the legendary St. Andrew's Arena, located at 1658 W. Addison in the Windy City. Chicago's MMA scene has been relatively quiet since the debut of the inaugural Ironheart Crown in November of 1999. However, with the help of promoters Michael Castellano (Chicago Challenge) and the late Tom Letuli (Bangkok Brawl), matchmaker Eric Moon is putting together another great show. This event will be held in remembrance of Tom Letuli.

When asked what the Ironheart Crown 2 had in the works. Moon replied, "I don't want to spoil the surprise just yet, but let's just say that if the fans liked what they saw last year, this show is really gonna get them off."

If the event's debut was any indication of what fans can expect to see again at this year's show, Chicago is in for a night of excitement. Last year's production raised the standard for MMA in the Midwest. Two fights ended in spectacular 360-degree, spinning knockouts. Most of the others ended in technically sound submissions, and three of the fights had spectators on the edge of their seats as these close matches went into overtime, ending in unexpected and often controversial decisions.

"It was a good mix," Moon comments. "The fights weren't simple displays of grappling technique. There was a lot of stand up action. Lots of punching and kicking. Jason Glabus showed us just how effective knee strikes can be against a grappler's clinch, and Phil Johns showed us that sometimes an NCAA wrestler can actually punch." After making quick work of his first opponent, 3-time NCAA wrestling champion Phil Johns went on to KO Carlson Gracie Team fighter, Chris Gochis, in a record time of just six seconds. Other highlights of the show included the war between Steve Berger and 2-time UFC veteran Shoney Carter and Leo Valdes' explosive assault on Hackney fighter, Keith Black.

When asked if the card was complete yet, Moon replied, "Its not completely full. I got a few solid guys, big names in the Midwest, and I have a few other fighters that I haven't yet guaranteed a spot to. I'm looking for the best competitors I can find, and I don't want to be so anxious to finish the card that I miss out on some good, quality fighters."

The first Ironheart Crown featured three 4-man tournaments and some single matches. The second IHC will continue to consist of a format that fans love, tournaments. The IHC2 will host four 4-man tournaments; lightweight (135 - 155), middleweight (155 - 175), heavyweight (175 - 200), and open-weight (200 - 230). Moon pulled out all the stops on his first event and his second is no different. "We have cash prizes, medals, and belts," Moon says. "The belts are great this year. They're the same ones that were used in a recent World Extreme Fighting event. They're HUGE!"

Moon is putting his heart and soul into the event. "It's not the UFC, but it's a real quality show. It's the biggest and best MMA display in Chicago, and we take it very seriously. Everything is very professional. I'm not in this for the money. You can't make money at this level when you're spending a lot on prizes, quality staff, and top-notch production. I just want to put on a good show. I want to find the best fighters I can get, and put them in an event they can be proud of. An event that makes the sport look good in the public eye."

While the card is still being finalized, interested fans or fighters can contact Eric Moon at 773-793-6555, or visit www.ironheartcrown.com for more information. Moon is still accepting applications from experienced fighters who are interested. Full Contact Fighter will be there to cover the event. Stay tuned, I am still trying to squeeze out the current fight card from Eric Moon. I will make it available, as soon as I get it.

From the event's promoter:
UCC 2 TO FEATURE 14 FIGHTS FIGHT CARD!
Get Ready For The
MOMENT of TRUTH
UCC 2

THE DEMOLITION MAN RETURNS TO CANADA!!!!!!

Claudionor Fontinelle (Montreal, Canada) - The Moment of truth is here for "The Demolition Man", Brazilian sensation Claudionor Fontinelle as he makes his return to the Universal Combat Challenge to defend his UCC World Middleweight title.

Fontinelle raised many an eyebrow with his impressive win at UCC 1. The Pierre-Charbonneau center roared as the "Demolition Man" showed his great striking onslaught, grappling skills and showman ability. The champion will be put to the test once again as Denver, Colorado native John "Bad Boy" Cronk is coming to Montreal to derail the demolition train.

Cronk has many impressive victories to his credit and his "in your face" style of aggressive striking has earned him the nickname of the "Bad Boy". It will be Brazil vs. USA in this UCC World Middleweight championship battle and fans will see another explosive main event to cap off the 2nd Universal Combat Challenge.

THE BEGINNING OF CANADA'S OWN BAD BOY!
UCC 2 will be the place for the highly anticipated MMA debut of former pro boxer and Montreal Bad Boy, Paul Dube. Dube is somewhat of a legend in the province of Quebec due to not only his in ring performances but also his out of ring "activities". Many insiders in Montreal refer to Dube as the one who will become "The Real Tank" of MMA. When asked about his heavy reputation, Dube replied "Many people will be coming to see me fight in the UCC - half will show up to cheer me and the other half will be there to see me get a beating - I'm coming in to GIVE the beating!!!". To face Dube will be Ontario fighter and Kenpo Karate expert Robin Mouton. Mouton is very eager to enter the UCC ranks with a huge win over Dube and says he is willing to do whatever it takes to obtain victory. Fight fans don't want to miss this incredible Light Heavyweight MEGA CHALLENGE!!!

FABIANO / NESTOR PART 2 : FOR THE WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE!
The UCC World Lightweight title will also be on the line for UCC 2 as Wagnney Fabiano and Charles Nestor continue their ongoing saga. There two athletes met for the belt at the highly successful UCC 1. After 20 minutes of intense combat it was the Brazilian born Fabiano who earned the judge's decision. Even before this bout it was apparent that the emotion between these two would be hard to contain - AND IT WAS!!! Referee Mario Yamasaki had his hands full while trying to keep order in this first UCC World Lightweight title fight. After the bout, many people felt that this chapter in UCC history was left unfinished. So at UCC 2 it will be The Moment of Truth for Charles Nestor and Wagnney Fabiano as they compete again with the World Lightweight belt up for grabs.

THE 8-MAN MIDDLEWEIGHT TOURNAMENT CONTINUES!!!
On June 2nd 2000, eight of the world's toughest middleweight warriors showed up to do battle at UCC 1. Each athlete fought with all his heart to advance in the tournament and thus climbing the UCC Middleweight ladder. After the smoke cleared it was 4 men who rose above the rest and earned the right to compete in round 2 at UCC 2. Fight fans will see these athletes fight in a 4-man single elimination tournament where the winner must win twice in one night in order to be declared the UCC Middleweight tournament champion. At UCC 1, Donald Ouimet advanced in the tournament with an explosive win over Kyokushin fighter Sylvain Martineau. Unfortunately Donald sustained an injury while training that will prevent him from competing in round 2 of the tournament.

In fairness to all the UCC warriors, a random draw was conducted with all four middleweights who didn't advance in show 1. One man's name was pulled and the man's name is David Loiseau! This turn of events sets up a rematch between Dave and Ontario's Justin Bruckman who scored an arm bar victory over the game Loiseau in their first round bout. The title of the event is "The Moment of Truth" and that moniker is on the minds of these four elite athletes as they return to be declared the victor and UCC Middleweight Tournament champion. FIGHT 1 : ROCCA vs. VIGNEAULT, FIGHT 2 : BRUCKMAN vs. LOISEAU

DANGEROUS DAVE BENETEAU RETURNS WITH REDEMPTION IN MIND!
Dangerous Dave Beneteau makes his return to UCC against MMA juggernaut Joe Campanella. Beneteau showed his warrior spirit by accepting a tough main event superfight against Australian Elvis Sinosic with only 4 days notice at June's UCC debut show. Now with several months of preparation time, Dave says that the fight world will now see the real David Beneteau. Dave has his work cut out for him as he is set to face a man who always comes to BANG and has been doing it for a long time. Joe Campanella says that he is in no way intimidated by Dave's reputation and is coming to Montreal to land the big bombs in route to victory. Don't miss this battle of the big boys.

Not many things in life are truly free, but today our giveaways are, as the Queen of the UFC, Paula Romero, helps us have some fun and part with some goodies for winners of our trivia questions. We also will have more royalty on the line, as the First Lady of NHB, Phyllis Lee, speaks to us directly from Japan to help preview Sunday's Pancrase card, including the first rounds and semifinals of this year's Neo Blood Tournament.

Experience Pays Off In First RINGS USA

OREM, Utah -- In the first-ever RINGS event in the U.S., it didn't come down to striking or submission ability. Instead, the edge appeared to go to the fighters with previous RINGS experience.
Advancing to the finals of the RINGS USA Rising Stars tournament were Jeremy Horn and Chris Haseman in the 200-under division and Bobby Hoffman and Tsuyoshi Kosaka in the heavyweight bracket. They will be joined by the four winners at this Saturday's "B Bracket" event in Honolulu.
All four of the finalists have competed regularly in RINGS events in Japan.
Horn qualified by beating former UFC fighter Keith Mielke, then getting a bye when local star Griffen Reynaud had to forfeit after suffering a broken hand.
Haseman, of RINGS Australia, scored a pair of submission wins beating UFC vet Jermaine Andre in the second round.
Hoffman continued his rampage with two more wins (he is 5-0 in RINGS), beating Aaron Brink in the second round.
Kosaka (TK) made his first appearance since taking a lengthy rest by beating UFC vet Travis Fulton in the first round and surprising Greg Wikan in the semis.
A very appreciative crowd of just under 1,000 seemed to like the RINGS rules, which feature quick standups when action slows on the ground. There were several standing ovations and the fans seemed to like the quick submission skills of Haseman and Kosaka.
The four finalists from the "B Bracket" will join the "A Bracket" finialists in the RINGS USA Finals on Sept.30 in Moline, Ill.

Rings USA Hits Hawaii
Story and Photos By Michael Onzuka

The Rings master plan has made its way to a little island in the middle of the Pacific, very similar to the homeland of Rings, Japan. Big names are coming out of the woodwork to see where they stand in the Rings modified NHB format, as well as to watch the action. Rings Utah winners that were present at the weigh in's include both Tsuyoshi "TK" Kosaka and Chris Haseman. Haru, Josh Barnett, Akira Maeda Both fighters are undoubtedly present to scout their future opponents. The King of Rings, Akira Maeda, was also present. For those who have not see Maeda in person, this man is a giant. Local Hawaii favorites John Lewis and Josh Barnett have both come back to Hawaii to accompany their fighters and will attempt to coach them to victory.
Rings seem to be more viewer friendly because if a fight is stagnant on the ground, the fighters will be stood up. This equates in to more opportunity for highlight show knockouts. A fighter can extend his stay on the ground by being actively improving his position on the ground or attempting various submissions. Fans will be used to the allowed punching, kicking, knee, and elbow attacks while standing, but once the fight goes to the ground, no knee and elbow strikes are permitted. Fighters are allowed to punch only below the shoulders, excluding the groin. I see these two rules as offsetting since the strikers will have many opportunities to end the fight standing because of the many re-starts. The technical grapplers see the limited striking on the ground as a chance to work their magical mystery moves and attempt to manipulate and submit their opponent. The real question is which of the fighters involved in the two 4-man Middleweight and two 4-man Heavyweight tournaments can adapt their style to these different rules. Fighters that accidentally break the rules will be issued a yellow card and lose a point in the 10-point scoring system. Three yellow cards and the fighter is disqualified. For flagrant fouls, the referee will issue a red card and the fighter will be immediately disqualified.
Falaniko Vitale       Now that the rules are out of the way...let's get to the fighters. Local grown fighters Falaniko Vitale (SWAT), who was a stand out University of Hawaii Football player and a NHB fighter with a 4-0 record returns to action along with Kawika Paaluhi (Jesus is Lord Gym), who introduced technique and a well rounded background to Hawaii fight fans when NHB in Hawaii was in its infancy. Joining them are Tali Kuliha'apai who seemed to be in a great mood all night and Wesley "Cabbage" Cabrerra, who will attempt to slice and dice his opponents tomorrow. These young talented fighters bring the Hawaii fans out and give them something to cheer about. The experienced Adrian Serrano had his game face on during the weigh ins. Rings Japan stars Kanehara and Namekawa look to be favorites because of experience with Rings and its rules. John Lewis brought in his student, Big Eric Pele. After talking with John, the name Pele seems to fit him well because he is supposedly a cat-like quick fighter even though coming in as a heavyweight. Valintijn Overeem from Rings Holland will add more international flavor in the melting pot that is called Hawaii. Eddie Millis, who seems to keep his guys on a strict diet and weight training program, brought the very ripped Josh Hall from his Shark Tank. East coast favorite Tom Sauer, as well as Mike Dresch, Chris Munsen (AMC), and the owner of the fast knockouts, Rocky Batastini, will join the fun. Dave Menne Last, but not least, arguably the best lightweight in the world right now, Dave Menne will jump up a weight class to take on the middleweights. I thought that weight would be a factor for Menne until I saw him. His frame can easily carry 200 pounds well and in fact, had to sweat off some pounds to make the 200 pound class!
With the weigh-ins over and T. Jay Thompson's blood pressure dropping now that everyone showed up, all we have to do is wait until the event begins. Hawaii fans are following the trends of fans across the nation and seem to be more educated about the technical aspects of NHB events. The early events were riddled with boo's when the majority of the fights went to the ground. Now, I can hear the fans talking about how each fighter is setting up arm-bars, chokes, and foot locks while wrestling. The two 5 minute rounds with an additional 5 minute overtime in the event of a tie, along with the re-start rule if there is non-advancing ground work, will keep fight fans interested. There is a good mix of international talent, local flavor, and experience champions that will make Rings Hawaii an action packed event.

Rings USA "Rising Stars Tournament" Hawaii
"B" Bracket

July 22, 2000   -   Neal S. Blaisdell Arena
Story and Photos By Chris Onzuka

Tom Sauer/Valintijn Overeem The sparks were flying at Rings' second event in the U.S. and Hawaiian NHB fans were lucky enough that Rings chose Hawaii as the place for their "B" bracket tournament of the Rings USA "Rising Stars Tournament." I don't know about the "Rising Stars" title because there were some establish fighters and the "rising stars," did not look like they were rising at all. Every mixed martial arts event has slightly different rules, but Rings' events have been known to favor the striker, by standing up the fighters quickly if there is no progression towards a superior position, keeping the action at a non-stop pace. However, grapplers "enjoy" a no striking to the head rule, when the fight goes to the ground, encouraging submissions. Rings events also favor the fighters who have fought in Rings' events previously, which was apparent in Utah and here in Hawaii, where both Rings Japan fighters advanced along with an extremely, heavy-handed, Tom Sauer and John Lewis protègè, Eric Pele. Rings' exciting fights are sure to please the rest of the U.S., just like it did Hawaii's fans on this night.

"NO HOLDS BARRED" ON EYADA SPORTS,
THE WEEK OF JULY 24 - 28:

by Eddie Goldman

"No Holds Barred" can be heard every Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 PM New York time (Eastern Time - U.S.), only on eYada.com (http://www.eyada.com).

Pimpin' Ain't Easy Monday, July 24 -- UFC matchmaker John Perretti joins us to talk about his views on the state of the mixed martial arts. Chuck Williams will be putting on the Upstate Grappling Classic in Rochester, NY, on September 10, and today we find all about it. Marc Ratner, executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, talks with us about the recent conference of the Association of Boxing Commissions and the state of boxing reform.

Tuesday, July 25 -- John Castillo tells us about the submission grappling tournament which he will be hosting in Wichita, Kansas, this Saturday, July 29. Kipp Kollar, president of the North American Grappling Association, talks with us about this Saturday's Grapplers Games in Danbury, CT.

Wednesday, July 26 -- Mark Coleman has gone from being an Olympic wrestler to being considered by many as the number one heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter in the world. Today we learn from the man himself just what his plans are. Cesar Gracie also updates us both on how fighters from his jiu-jitsu school in California have been doing, and to discuss his own plans involving future grappling and fighting events.

Thursday, July 27 -- Teimoc Jonston Ono was an Olympian in judo, as well as a national champion in judo and sombo. He currently is a martial arts and self-defense instructor at the Ultimate Gym in New York. Today he joins us in the studio.

Friday, July 28 -- Today we focus on the never-ending Olympic scandals. Journalist Wina Sturgeon, who has covered Olympic sports for publications including the Standard-Examiner in Utah and Sports Illustrated, gives us her take on the latest developments. Dr. Wade Exum, who recently resigned as the drug czar for the U.S. Olympic Committee, has filed a federal lawsuit against the committee alleging that the USOC had allowed athletes who had previously tested positive at Olympic trials to go unpunished and compete at the Olympics, and also for practices of racial discrimination. Today we hear from Dr. Exum.

Good luck Mike!
Full Contact Fighter's Mike Onzuka
to Compete in the 2000 World BJJ Championships

By Chris Onzuka

Chris and Mike Onzuka Relson Gracie's Hawaii Team has left to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to compete in the World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships, which is also called the Campeonato Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu. The tournament will be held on July 27-30 in the Tijuca Tennis Club.

The Relson Gracie team members that are going to Brazil include:
Michael Onzuka, brown belt
Kaleo Hosaka, purple belt
Shane Agena, purple belt
Steve Hordinski, blue belt
Zac Pang, blue belt

This will be Mike's second trip to Brazil and second time competing in the Mundial. We both competed in the Mundial in 1997 as purple belts. This is the first trip to the BJJ motherland for the others. Mike Onzuka To get a feel for the plane trip from Hawaii to Brazil, in '97, we spent 19 hours in the air. This did not count our stopover time. Whew! What a trip! But I would do it again at the drop of a hat. The four above (with the exception of Steve) will be leaving Brazil on August 3rd. Each guy shelled out a lot of cash to pay their own way to compete without much sponsorship, if any. We wish them the best of luck and say a prayer that everyone has a strong showing and comes back the same way they left!

If possible, Mike will try to email some photos and info about the Mundial back to be posted on the Full Contact Fighter Website. But the phone system in Brazil leaves A LOT to be desired, so keep your fingers crossed.

On Saturday, September 9th, 2000 the UCI Bren Center in Irvine, CA will host the inaugural show of the Warrior's Cup of America. Promoted by Lowkick productions, the fights will be contested under California Muay Thai rules with some fights sanctioned by the World Kickboxing Association.

The main event features a super showdown between 6-time world kickboxing champion (in three different weight divisions) Danny "Hard as" Steele (USA), 45-5, against Thai legend Coban Lookchaomesaithong. Coban, who is 33, is best remembered for winning the prestigious Lumpinee stadium (Thailand's top Muay Thai venue) championship SEVEN TIMES, his four epic battles with Dutch Muay Thai superstar Ramon Dekker and a career that boasts over 190 fights.

The co-main events include Maurice Travis from the USA versus Emanuel N'Toh (Manu) from France (both World Muay Thai Council (WMTC) world champions), Ben Garcia (USA) against Richard Kostuck (USA) as well as bouts featuring Duane "Bang" Ludwig and Walter "Sleeper" Michelowski.

Coming fresh on the heels of the K-1 USA show in Las Vegas promoters Stephen Quadros and Jason Luevan are more than optimistic about the public's embracing the resurging standup sport. Quadros states, "This card has to potential to be the greatest night in American kickboxing history."

Mundial Day Two
7-28-00

By Chris Onzuka

[Unfortunately, due to some apparent problems with telephone lines in Brazil, the transmission of the Day 1 report was lost (but the picture below of Mike in the Airport made it through)]

Mike Onzuka We had a rough and very cold night sleeping on plyboard and a thin piece of foam. We returned to the Yacht club [the infamous ICJG, Iate Clube Jardim Guanabara] and found that our other teammates were nowhere to be found. They skipped the Yacht club and traveled back to the Airport to sleep in a hotel. Kaleo and I dropped off our belongings in our room earlier in the day and had the only key. We slept in our sweats and gis. We woke up and took a cold shower (no hot water) and had Acai (a fruit sorbet) that we covered with granola. I waited three years to taste this delicious food again. That was our breakfast, after that, we met up with Shane and Zac (our other two teammates) and went off to the Mundial.

Today was a very busy day since it was the blue and purple belts. Three out of our five member team fought today with little success. All of the three guys (Shane, purple belt, Steve, blue belt and Zac, blue belt) lost their first match. Shane by a score of 4x2, Steve 2x0, and Zac lost by an advantange. Zac continued on and entered the open weight class and was victorious by beating his opponent 4x0, but lost his second match by 3x2. All our team members did well, but it was not our day. Hopefully, tomorrow is different. Kaleo, purple belt and I will compete tomorrow.

So much for now. I'll try again to keep everyone updated on tomorrow's results. Wish us luck.

by Eddie Goldman

Pimpin' Ain't Easy Monday, July 31 -- The loquacious Chris Cordeiro joins us to talk about the August 19 WVF Cage Brawl in Chalmette, Louisiana, near New Orleans. John Townsley, president of the Board of Directors of the U.S.A. Federation of Pankration Athlima, talks with us about the Pankration National Championships and Team Trials - 2000, which will be held on August 26-27 in Kansas City, Missouri, and about the progress Pankration has made in becoming an Olympic sport in 2004.

Tuesday, August 1 -- Matt Hume of AMC Kickboxing-Pankration reports on this past Saturday's Return of the Gladiators card in Rochester, Washington. Also, fighter Tony Galindo of the Lions Den has begun to make a name for himself, setting the record for the fastest knockout at the King of the Cage. Today he talks with us as well.

Wednesday, August 2 -- Renzo, Renzo, Renzo! It's Renzomania again at eYada, as Renzo Gracie joins us in the studio, probably with an entourage of his students. We also will get a full report from Joao Pedro Tinoco of Gracie Magazine about this past weekend's Mundial, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Championships.

Thursday, August 3 -- The Smith Brothers, Paul and Maurice, join us. Well, they're not really brothers, but both have a lot to say about the fight game. Paul Smith of the IFC lets us know about the expanded schedule for IFC shows, and Maurice Smith talks about his plans, including a probable return to the Octagon at UFC XXVII on September 22. Also, although he is not a Smith, Doug Fischer of Houseofboxing.com joins us in the studio to help us keep up with the Roy Joneses of the world and all the latest from the world of boxing.

Friday, August 4 -- Bruce Buffer had the announcing duties at last week's Heroes show, the debut NHB event put on by Carlson Gracie in Brazil. Today Bruce takes us behind the scenes. Bob Shamrock also joins us to talk about his recent move to the San Diego area to help run the Lions Den, and also may just have some other Lions Den members along with him.
