From the event's promoter:
RINGS USA to debut in Utah, Hawaii

On the heels of the successful King of Kings event in Japan, RINGS will make its debut in the U.S. this summer.
The first RINGS USA event will consist of two 16-fighter tournaments, held over three events. The first, set for July 15, will be in Orem, Utah; the second, set for July 22, will be in Honolulu, Hawaii; and the Finals, set for Sept. 30, will be in Moline, Illinois. The events will be run by Extreme Challenge promoter Monte Cox.
The two tournaments are for fighters 200-and-under and heavyweights. The two brackets will be divided between the first two events, meaning there will be two 8-man tournaments in Utah and the same in Hawaii. Two rounds will take place at each site, meaning there will be four finalists (2 in each division) at each site. The Final Eight will then compete in the Finals, where each winner will be paid $10,000 and earn a berth into this year's King of Kings tourney in Japan.
"We are getting close, but we haven't filled all the brackets yet... we're still going through possible fighters," Cox said. "If there are more fighters interested, they should email me a bio at Fiteiowa@aol.com."
RINGS USA events will follow Rings KOK rules... punches, kicks, knees and elbows are allowed standing... only punches to the body on the ground. Fighters will have a limited time to improve position on the ground before being stood up.
Here is a preliminary list of fighters for the first event, which will be held July 15 at the McKay Center in Orem, Utah.

"NO HOLDS BARRED" ON EYADA SPORTS,
THE WEEK OF JUNE 5 - 9:

by Eddie Goldman

Here is the schedule for "No Holds Barred" for the week of June 5-9.

"No Holds Barred" can be heard every Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 PM New York time (Eastern Time - US), only on eYada.com (http://www.eyada.com).

Eddie Goldman Monday, June 5 -- Frank Shamrock, who relinquished his UFC middleweight championship after his September battle with Tito Ortiz in what many called the best fight of 1999, tells us today about his move to the Los Angeles area and his current plans. Also, we will have live coverage of the telephone press conference of Shane Mosley, as he prepares for his June 17 showdown with Oscar de la Hoya.

Tuesday, June 6 -- After a yearlong break from fighting, Evan Tanner will be returning to action on July 8, along with the return to Amarillo, Texas, of the USWF (Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation) from a hiatus of its own. Evan will be defending his USWF heavyweight title against Raoul Romero, a kickboxing and vale tudo champion from Mexico. Evan will also tell us about his new jobs: owner and president of the USWF. Also, we speak with Mario Mercado, a standout wrestler at Syracuse, currently assistant wrestling coach at NYU, and the guest of honor at last week's Midwood High School Wrestling Awards Dinner in Brooklyn. Mario will be making his submission grappling debut on June 17 against Ricardo Almeida at the Kimono Kombat Sport Jiu Jitsu Championships, at County College of Morris, in Randolph, New Jersey.

Wednesday, June 7 -- This is a travel day, as we go to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for UFC XXVI on Friday, June 9. We will repeat the show of Friday, June 2, which featured in the first hour Pedro Rizzo telling us how he hopes to capture the UFC heavyweight title this Friday; in the second hour Sean Shelby of Grappler's World (http://www.grapplersworld.com) talking with us about the stepped up campaign to end cable censorship of mixed martial arts events; and in the third hour UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman talking about his title defense.

Thursday, June 8 and Friday, June 9 -- Both days we will do live shows from the Five Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Thursday will feature a live webcast of the UFC XXVI press conference, and both days will have plenty of on-the-spot interviews with fighters and insiders from the world of mixed martial arts. These live remotes promise to be the most comprehensive and up-to-date preview of UFC XXVI anywhere.

This is our first attempt to work with them, and this is part of the work we have started - to come together under a unified set of rules. Horn shines in Extreme Challenge XXXIII

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- Jeremy Horn returned to his hometown and made a solid impression on his fans at Harveys Casino.
Horn, a 5-time UFC veteran, dominated previously unbeaten Nate Parmelee in the Super Bout, scoring a KO victory with a forearm smash to the back of the head at the 3:24 mark of the first round. Horn improved his record to 41-5-4, while Parmelee, from Sioux City, suffered his first loss in 12 bouts.
In other key bouts, Mark Hughes, the twin brother of UFC and WEF star Matt Hughes, won his third straight bout, scoring a TKO over Neal Binkley of Omaha at 1:01 of the first round. Hughes used his wrestling skills to get an early takedown and bloodied Binkley's nose badly with a variety of punches to the face before referee Tim Sanchez halted the bout.
Mike Hueser, an up-and-coming fighter from the Miletich Martial Arts Center, captured a 4-man tournament title by beating two opponents in a total of less than 2 minutes. Hueser, now 4-0, won by guillotine in :45 against Clyde Oakes, then by armbar in 1:06 against Mitch Rosland in the finals.
Local heroes Dave Drey and Danko Pike also captured impressive victories via punches. One no-show and a fighter being injured the day before the show forced a few changes, which resulted in Ironman Travis Fulton not having an opponent for the show.
The next Extreme Challenge events are: June 17 at LCO Casino in Hayward, Wis., and June 29 at the RiverCenter in Davenport, Iowa.

Earwood, Schmitz eye EC lightweight title

HAYWARD, Wis. -- For Ben Earwood and Tom Schmitz, the retirement of longtime Extreme Challenge champion turned UFC fighter Shonie Carter couldn't have come at a more advantageous time.
Carter's success in the UFC has given an opportunity to Earwood and Schmitz, who will face off for the Extreme Challenge lightweight (170 pounds) championship on June 17 at LCO Casino.
Every Extreme Challenge champion has advanced to the UFC with the exception of heavyweight title holder Bobby Hoffman, who has had to reject several UFC offers due to prior committments with RINGS in Japan.
Earwood, 11-2, competes for Miletich Martial Arts Center and has a tourney triumph at Super Brawl and many EC wins to his credit. Schmitz, 3-2, was a semifinalist in the Extreme Best of the Best tourney (losing to UFC star Matt Hughes) and trains at Minnesota Martial Arts.
Two tournaments are also on tap with some of the top talent in the Midwest and a couple fighters from England who are looking to make a name for themselves in the U.S.

"NO HOLDS BARRED" ON EYADA SPORTS,
    THE WEEK OF JUNE 19 - 23:

    by Eddie Goldman

We would first like to thank all the people in California and Iowa that helped us do our live shows there over the past two weeks. This week is a short week, as there will be live shows on Monday and Tuesday, with archive programming the rest of the week, while I am in Dallas for the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials at Reunion Arena, June 22-24.

"No Holds Barred" can be heard every Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 PM New York time (Eastern Time - US), only on eYada.com (http://www.eyada.com).

Eddie Goldman Monday, June 19 -- Doug Fischer of House of Boxing (http://www.houseofboxing.com) helps us recap the biggest boxing event of the year, Shane Mosley's defeat of Oscar de la Hoya on June 17. Also, Walt Lysak will be hosting the 2000 World Submission Grappling Championships on Saturday, June 24, in Springfield, Massachusetts, and today he previews that event with us.

Tuesday, June 20 -- It's Wrestling Week in Dallas, and today Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling's Director of Communications, previews this week's Olympic Wrestling Trials. Also, Zee Vjesalicu is planning to put on a women's grappling event in the fall, and will soon open up a training facility in the San Jose, California, area. Today she tells us all about those projects, as well as what her fighting plans are.

Wednesday, June 21 -- Today will be a repeat of the show of June 16 from the Beverly Hills Jiu-Jitsu Club. The guests included BHJJC owner Marcus Vinicius; fighter Fabiano Iha; Doug Fischer with his predictions about the Mosley-De La Hoya fight; Neil Antin, who is in the process of starting a new television channel called "The Fight Channel"; "Judo" Mark Kompaneyets, who was a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world blue belt champion in 1998 and will be competing in the Mundials again this year; and some sagacious comments by NHB journalists Jeff Thaler and Josh Gross.

Thursday, June 22 -- This will be a repeat of the May 25 show, which featured reporter Joao Pedro Tinoco of Gracie Magazine and Nino Shembri, who on May 17 in Sao Paulo became the over-95 kg division champion in the new Jiu-Jitsu Professional League, and also Kipp Kollar, president of the North American Grappling Association.

Friday, June 23 -- Today's show will be a repeat of the June 6 show, which featured Evan Tanner of the USWF telling us about his and the USWF's return on July 8 in Amarillo, Texas, and wrestler and grappler Mario Mercado.

    Pedro Rizzo: UFC XXVI
With "The Mouth of NHB" Joel Gold

The morning after his fight with Kevin Randleman I got a quick five minutes with Pedro Rizzo as he was running late to catch a flight back home to Brazil.

Walk me through the fight. What was your game plan, that you thought would make you a winner in this bout?
I was thinking to start fight after the second round. After I got started, get real hard in the third, fourth and fifth round. First and second round just press to make him tired and really start hard in the third, fourth and fifth rounds. But everything was changed.

    Why?
Rizzo/Randleman In the first round, I think he won; he came in and took me down in the beginning. In the second round I could stay on my feet. I think I was better. Still I didn't throw too many kicks, not too many punches, but I thought I was better. In the third round, in the beginning of the round I got a very hard headbutt...very, very hard. So, after that, everything was changed. I was totally knocked out. After that I don't know, my corner told me that I tried to kick and he took me down at the end of the round. I don't remember well after that. I don't remember the fight after that. I was knocked out and I was just glad that Kevin couldn't see that I was knocked out. The fourth and fifth round, I don't remember anything. I just fought. I don't know how I fought. I don't know what I did because I did not see the tape. I just woke up in the dressing room. I took off my gloves and I looked at my trainer, my teacher Marco [Ruas] and I asked him what happened. You know, did I lose? Then he said, "Yeah, you lost." I saw the mirror, I said, "Man, he really beat me, you know." My face is terrible, like a car accident. And Marco said, "No, you did it to each other. You lost some points." I said, "How did I lose some points, because I don't remember anything." I thought I lost by knock out. He said, "No, by points." I was totally knocked out. I fought and fought and in the fourth and fifth round, I wasn't there. I wasn't fighting. I don't know what happened. People said I could wrestle, they said I could defend the takedown. I don't know how, but I couldn't punch and kick, I just keep moving. I don't know, people told me. I don't remember very well.

Before the fight even started you came into this fight with a black eye, tell me how this occurred?
One week ago I got a big cut. I was grappling with a friend of mine. I was doing some exercise and he slipped on the mat and he fell with his head on my head. It was a big cut. When I arrived here everyone asked. No, I said it was an old cut one year ago, but I was lying, it was one week ago. But I was ready for fight. Last time, we had to postpone before, I couldn't do again the same thing otherwise everyone is going to get crazy, you know. I came to fight, I came to win, I was ready. My physical...I was 100%, my body was 100%, just my eye weren't so good. After two punches in the ring, my eye got big again and it got cut and that is what happened.

Do you remember being on the ground and he tried to cradle your head, do you remember the feeling?
Rizzo/Randleman I remember he tried to grab my head and tried some choke. I don't know, but I didn't feel it. I've been training on the ground for 10 years. I know all the positions. I know when you have to tap out. I know what really works. I know that thing never works. It can work if you really don't know the ground game. Like I know that. No problem, I could feel relaxed. I didn't want to make a power against him because otherwise I will get tired. I just let him bring my head down. I was ok. I was very, very comfortable on the ground. I was fine that time I looked at Marco. I just forgot to throw punches at that time. I looked at Marco and ask him if it is open [cut] he said, "It's okay. It's a little bit." But he said it is okay. I asked Marco in my corner again how much times do I have to go. I just kept my guard closed to hold him and finish the round. I was comfortable at that time.

Were you surprised that he was so quick with his punches? He landed a few.
Yeah, Randleman is a very quick fighter. I knew that he would throw some punches, I knew that. I knew he would throw some jabs. He caught me with one or two jabs, but jabs are jabs. I knew he had good distance, has good movement. I knew he was doing everything just to take me down. I knew he wanted to do that for a surprise, then take me down. I keep my game. I keep my game, keeping him standing up and keep my game up. My game plan was the third round, third, fourth and fifth round.

I am sorry to all the fans. I am sorry to all the audience. I heard it was a boring fight. I don't remember very well [laughing]. I heard it was a shit fight. I know Kevin and I we can give a better show. That is we are both good fighters, Kevin is the champ. Everyone knows that. I don't have to prove this anymore. I have already fought good fighters. Everyone knows how I fight. I always fight through, but I always fight for a knockout. Everybody knows this. I could give a better show than last night. I just want to say that I am sorry and I hope the fans and the UFC can give me a new chance and I can show my game, my real game.

BRUCE BUFFER, THE VOICE OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS,
IS ON HIS WAY TO RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL WHERE
HE WILL HOST THE SPECIAL MMA EVENT - HEROES

Bruce Buffer, who is known worldwide as the "Voice of the Octagon" for his many years as the Octagon announcer for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and many other international MMA and NHB events will be appearing on July 24th as the announcer for the much anticipated "Heroes" event in Brazil.

Heroes is an Ultimate Fighting event that will happen at the Tio Sam Stadium, in Niteròi (Rio de Janeiro), on July 24th starting at 8:30 PM. It was created by Carlson Gracie, one of the most respected Jiu-Jitsu's master in the world and SportsJÀ! is its main Sponsor.

The goal of this event is to change how people see jiu-jitsu, promoting peace between its community and avoiding fights outside of the ring. We will have fighters from the different academies in Brazil with some of the most important ones like Johil de Oliveira (Two times IVC Champion) and some fighters who practice with Marco Ruas and Pedro Rizzo.

Four thousand people are expected at Tio Sam Stadium and the event will be covered by a pay TV channel and transmitted online by SportsJÀ! (first time that is happening in Brazil).

Bruce states the following: "I am both honored and excited to have been invited to appear at this incredible and important historical event in Brazil. I look forward to exciting the crowd in Rio and to being a fan as I watch the many talented fighters display their fighting prowess and talent, because on July 24th, 'It Will Be Time... To Begin...' again in Brazil."

    From The Judge's Chair
    By Matt Hume

From the June Issue of Full Contact Fighter

What fight was he watching? That phrase is far too familiar in relation to judges' decisions in combat sports. Sometimes judges make decisions that are worthy of our questioning and criticism, but other times the questioning and criticism is due to a lack of understanding of the criteria that the judges are basing their decisions on.

When you hear a bad decision in boxing it is usually justifiably bad. Boxing criteria for judges is the same from state to state and sanctioning body to sanctioning body. That is one of the reasons that you will see boxing matches that are sanctioned by more than one organization at the same time. In our sport, however, it is not quite so simple. I have judged for many organizations including Pride, Shooto, SuperBrawl, Extreme Challenge and the UFCF. Although many of the same fighters frequent those venues, the criteria used in judging them are different for every event. The differences are enough that in a close fight you could easily get opposite outcomes.

    Case in point:

The Shooto organization uses a '10-point must system' per round, the same as in boxing. The main criterion that the judges are looking for is "damage". Shooto utilizes a standing 8-count and a "catch call" as the referee's means of expressing a high damage factor. When judging a Shooto match, the judge will look for "effective" striking, throwing and submission to determine the winner at the end of each round. If one combatant has gained an advantage in the "damage" factor, then he will win that round 10-9. A knockdown (standing 8-count), or a "catch" will result in a 10-8 round and if that occurred several times in a round, then that round could be scored 10-7 or even 10-6. Most of the time, however, that much damage would have resulted in a referee stoppage or TKO. At the end of the fight, all rounds are tallied and a winner declared.

Contrast that system to the original system that was used by the UFCF. The criteria for the UFCF are based on 4 categories. The first category is standing fight superiority; the second is takedown superiority; the third is ground superiority; and the fourth is overall superiority. At the end of the match, the referee awards one point to the fighter who showed superiority in the stand-up fight, no points are awarded if the judge believes that neither fighter showed superiority. One or zero points for takedown superiority and one or zero points for ground fight superiority. Two points are awarded to the fighter who showed superiority for the greater time of the match, no points are awarded if one fighter did not dominate the fight for a majority of the time. The Pride organization uses a similar system, although it has many more criteria to score, which include damage, effective combinations, takedown offense and defense, weight difference of more than 10 kilos, and a few more criteria.

Although all of those scoring systems hold merit and can render a fair and impartial decision, in a close fight each system could show a different outcome.

As a fan, it is most enjoyable to sit back and watch the fights, throw food at your buddies and trash talk the fighters and judges as if they were only a few hundred miles out of earshot. At the end of the fight, we take into account our biases and prognostications and render our own judges' decision. The next step is to hit the internet and "flame" on about how your man got robbed. OK, I realize FCF readers have too much class to partake in that scenario, but we all know about those "other guys". Here are two things to try that may add a new dimension to your NHB watching enjoyment:
    1. Find out what the judging criteria is for the next event that you will watch. Agree ahead of time with your buddies that no one will proclaim a winner until all of you have expressed your opinion on each and every point of the judges' criteria. Then see if your decision is in line with the judges.
    2. Remember a match that you thought was a close match but had a controversial decision. (I'll bet your thinking Rutten vs Randleman, right?). Find out what criteria the judges were using. Watch the fight again and consider only those criteria. After you have done this experiment, decide which way is more enjoyable for you to partake in the event. You may find that you have a future as an NHB judge or analyst, or you may find out that it's just more fun to be a chip throwin', trash talking, internet flaming, awesome NHB fan. Either way, you're still supporting our great sport and that's what counts.
For the readers who are budding new fighters or even seasoned veterans, taking into account what the judges will be scoring you on is a very good idea. Dave Menne is a great example of a smart fighter who knows how to impress the judges. I don't know whether he consciously makes an attempt to impress the judges, or if it is just his style, but he is an excellent example. I had the pleasure of acting as Dave's corner man for his fight against Jutaro Nakao in Hawaii. Dave listened and carried out every instruction that was given in the corner or yelled into the ring and ran a near perfect game plan that assured him a unanimous decision victory in that fight. Everything that he did was from a game plan that was meant to impress the judges with their own criteria. Of course the fighter is the one who actually has to carry out the game plan, but as a cornerman, it is also important to know the criteria. The cornerman's knowledge of the criteria is important, not only to give your fighter the right advice, but also to use vocal tactics from the corner that make it easy for the judges to realize that your fighter is scoring and winning even when the fight appears close.

Knowing the judges' criteria as a fighter and cornerman can enhance your chances of garnering a close decision. As a fan it can give you another perspective to enjoy. And as a judge it will serve to give you an unbiased focus and may save you from a midnight beating.

Thank you all for your continued support of our great sport. God bless.

    THE PHYSICAL THERAPY CORNER PRESENTS:
    TMJ

by Cindi A. Prentiss, MBA, PT, OCS, Cert. MDT
    From Full Contact Fighter Archives

    Q.   "About two weeks ago I was knocked out following 'a knee to the jaw.' I haven't yet returned to fighting. As if that wasn't enough, I continue to experience pain and clicking in my jaw during talking and chewing. The right side is worse than the left but I get pain in both sides of my jaw. I work at a computer all day and notice the pain worsening after lunch (even if I don't eat anything hard or crunchy). I haven't gone for medical help yet, just hoping it would pass.
Any suggestions and who would I see for this?"
    Terry J.

    Via e-mail

    A.   It sounds as though you have a dysfunction in your temporomandibular joint, better known as TMJ. This joint is where the mandible (bottom jaw bone) attaches to the head or skull on each side of your face. The temporomandibular joint is suspended from the face by muscles and ligament. A disc is present in between each side of your jaw, which helps the bones fit together. This joint is influenced by the structure of the teeth, as your bite determines how your jaw closes.
If your jaw was disrupted during the fight, the clicking may be the disc gliding inefficiently or even getting "caught". The pain may be caused by the disc or may be caused by postural stresses while at work. Because you sit at a computer all day, you probably have extremely poor, forward head posture that can cause a multitude of problems in itself. Check your posture at least once each hour to be sure you are not jutting your chin forward.
You should consider seeing a dentist, who may fit you for a night guard, as well as a physical therapist who can evaluate and treat your condition. Physical therapy treatment may consist of modalities such as ultrasound, electric stimulation and moist heat as well as procedures such as joint mobilization, massage to the facial and neck muscles and therapeutic exercises.

Here are some tips and exercises to try:

    TMJ EXERCISES

    Repeat each exercise 6 times.
Perform the program 6 times each day.

    1. Mandibular Resting Position
Let tongue rest on roof of mouth just behind the top incisors.

Keep your jaw relaxed and your teeth slightly apart.

Return to this position after each of the following exercises.

    2. Controlled Opening
With tongue in resting position, slowly open mouth as far as tongue will allow, keeping tongue behind top incisors.

    3. Isometrics
In resting position, apply varying forces to your mandible (side/side, open/close).
Keep your jaw as stable as possible, resisting your forces.

    4. Chin Tucks
Tuck your chin towards your chest without bending your head forward.
(Retract your head backward so that your earlobes move parallel to the tips of your shoulders.) Hold the retracted position for 5 seconds.

    5. Shoulder Girdle Retraction
Squeeze your shoulder blades together creating less rounded shoulders (exaggerated military position). Hold this position for 5 seconds.

    6. Atlanto-Occipital Nodding
Clasp your hands behind your neck and gently nod your head getting movement only in your top 2 vertebrae.

HOOKnSHOOT Evolution Set For July 22nd, 2000
HnS Kicks Off The Abu Dhabi Qualifier Series
For The 2Nd Year In A Row!

Evansville, Indiana will host HOOKNSHOOT EVOLUTION on July 22nd. "We are getting set for the stretch run in 2000 - we ambitiously hope to run a show a month for the rest of the year" states promoter Jeff Osborne.

One of the lynch pins holding the run together are the Qualifiers for the 2001 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championships.

"We are adding a new weight class this year for the qualifiers, and we are leading off with the little guys - 65.9 KG & under." Continues Osborne. Last year, no tournament was held for this weight class "we thought we would have trouble filling the slots because that is 145 lbs., and we were not sure there were a lot of guys out there. Boy were we wrong!" Osborne further states "There are some big names, some champions from the American scene putting it on the line in July. I think the competition will take a jump in quality in every weight class this year, but I am most excited about leading off with this weight class!"

In holding with ADCC tradition, the eight men invited will not be announced until the week of the competition, but look for fast paced, technical battles from the little guys. The first batch of entry tapes has been received and the count of applicants is approaching 20! "This tournament will be groundbreaking" hopes an ecstatic Osborne.

"NO HOLDS BARRED" ON EYADA SPORTS,
    THE WEEK OF JUNE 26 - 30:

    by Eddie Goldman

"No Holds Barred" can be heard every Monday through Friday, 3 to 6 PM New York time (Eastern Time - U.S.), only on eYada.com (http://www.eyada.com).

Eddie Goldman Monday, June 26 -- Another busy weekend has come to a close, and we will have highlights of many of the key events. I was in Dallas to cover the 2000 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team Trials, and we will have a report. Throughout the week we will also play taped interviews with new Olympians Terry Brands and Kerry McCoy, and others, including a brief talk with former wrestler and coach Rep. Dennis Hastert, the current Speaker of the House of Representatives. We will also discuss Mike Tyson's latest controversial fight. We will as well have a report from Saturday's King of the Cage show with Jeff Thaler, and a live report from Japan about today's Pancrase show with Phyllis Lee.

Tuesday, June 27 -- Today we talk to filmmaker Adam Warren, who has just released the highly acclaimed documentary "Blood, Sweat, and Teeth" about the no-holds-barred fighting and mixed martial arts world.

Wednesday, June 28 -- Jeff Blatnick handled television commentary for the Olympic Wrestling Trials, and today we discuss them, as well as Jeff's thoughts on some controversies regarding recent rules changes in wrestling. Don't be too surprised if he fields some UFC questions as well, since he is the longtime UFC televison commentator and president of its sanctioning body, the Mixed Martial Arts Council. Also, Frank Mullis has been running grappling events in North Carolina, and planned to run more as well as a jiu-jitsu championship later this year. He was then informed by the North Carolina boxing commission that jiu-jitsu, grappling, and even Olympic-style wrestling and judo are ILLEGAL in that state. That sentence is not a missprint, and today Frank tells us what he is doing to end this latest absurd controversy.

Thursday, June 29 -- Mark Schultz wants to let it all hang out today. The former Olympic gold medalist wrestler and UFC fighter tells us why he can no longer compete anymore. He also gives his take on why Brigham Young University, where he was head wrestling coach for many years, dropped the program, and what are the plans for his grappling school. Also, Scott Sonnon, U.S. national sambo coach, tells us all about "Zdorovye," the Slavic natural health system that is used to counter the often destructive training practices of combat sport.

Friday, June 30 -- Today it's "Amarillo, Texas Day" on "No Holds Barred," as we talk to Steve Nelson about the USWF's return on July 8 in Amarillo, and the victory at the Olympic Wrestling Trials of Amarillo native Brandon Slay, who is believed to be the first Texas wrestler to make a U.S. Olympic wrestling team.

    Chicago's Letuli Dies From Cancer

CHICAGO -- Tom Letuli, the promoter who brought NHB fighting to the Midwest in 1996, has died after a year-long bout with cancer.
A memorial service is scheduled Saturday for Letuli, one of the most respected and active promoters in martial arts. In more than 30 years in the martial arts, Letuli and his wife, Rosemary, owned and ran gyms and promoted hundreds of events from kickboxing to karate to NHB. His most recent efforts included the "Bankok Brawl," "Ki-Jitsu" and "Battle of the Masters."
Letuli served as a judge for UFC XXI in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but had to decline an invitation earlier this month for UFC XXVI as his health declined.
In 1996 he debuted "Battle of the Masters" and drew a sellout crowd to St. Andrews Gym in Chicago. The winner of that 8-man event was current UFC lightweight champion Pat Miletich, who was making his NHB debut. He went on to do several more Battle of the Masters before the Illinois law was changed to limit the rules. He got rid of the cage and continued running successful events with limited rules.
In November of 1996, Letuli helped Monte Cox put on his first NHB show after promoting pro boxing. The event, Quad City Ultimate I, drew 8,000 people and started the promotion that is now the Extreme Challenge.
"Tom was the kind of promoter I always looked up to," Cox said. "He proved that you don't have to be sleazy and treat fighters like crap to be a successful promoter. When I wanted to start in NHB he treated me like a protege... helping me more than I could have ever expected. He didn't see me as a rival, but as an ally. He used to say 'we all have to stick together if this sport is going to make it" -- words that still hold true today."
Although it is a great loss for all that knew him, Letuli's influence will be around for a long time.
"Almost all the martial arts promoters in the Chicago area were taught or helped by Tom," Cox said. "He's somebody who won't be forgotten. But he sure will be missed."

Tito And Kristin Ortiz Injured In Accident!

Our good friend UFC Middleweight Champ Tito Ortiz and his wife were in Bermuda for their honeymoon. An unfortunate accident occurred while Tito was driving his wife around on a scooter. Details are sketchy at this time, but it appears that they had an accident with a bus. Tito suffered a broken foot, and his wife received serious injuries requiring her to be flown back to California.

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to both of them.
