By Eduardo Alonso After an very impressive performance at the last RINGS tournament, the Abu Dhabi sensation Ricardo Arona [pictured (standing) vs. JJ Machado at ADCC 2001] is now going to take one step further in his career and make his debut in PRIDE on September 24th! Ricardo Arona, who won both his weight division and the absolute at the Abu Dhabi submission wrestling championship, will be making his debut at the next Pride event against a very tough opponent in Guy Mezger! Mezger, who already fought the likes of Tito Ortiz (twice), Vanderlei Silva and Chuck Liddell, will be for sure the toughest opponent Arona has ever faced in his NHB career, it will be interesting to see how Arona will deal with the less restrictive Pride rules, since he is used to fighting for the RINGS organization. FCF was told today that Arona is back training with the Brazilian Top Team, and that his fight against Mezger is a done deal. |

Sunday - September 2, 2001 |
From the event's promoter: at Gussie L'Mours with Amateur Trials! It all began in the back of a now infamous nightclub near the airport in 1995. Eight men, with varying weights and fighting experience stepped inside a small, 16x16 ring at Gussie L'Mours nightclub and fought in the very first Future Brawl held in Hawaii. Since that time, this small "underground" fighting event has turned into big business with crowds as large as 7500 attending shows in major arenas around the world. Well, Extreme Sports Productions, producers of the Super Brawl series of events, are holding amateur trial at the place it all began! On Tuesday night, September 25, Gussie L'Mours will host Super Brawl's amateur trials. Interested fighters can contact T. Jay Thompson at 808.524.6062 or e-mail superbrawl@hawaii.rr.com. Standout fighters will be invited to compete in future professional Super Brawl events. As well as the amateur fights there will be special "tag-team" submission wrestling matches. Professional and amateur fighters are welcome. Two teams have already signed up, Falaniko Vitale and Anthony Torres are the first and John Crisostomo and Abe Rodrigues will also be competing. A professional bout will also be announced in the coming weeks as well as the possibility of muay-thai kickboxing matches. Tickets are expected to go fast with seating capacity of under 500. Ringside tickets are just $20 and general admission just $15. For tickets contact T. Jay Thompson (contact info above) or Gussie L'Mours at 836-7883. in Honolulu for the First Time in 4 Years! Gussie L'Mours nightclub, across from the Plaza Hotel, by the airport will host a closed circuit broadcast of the September 28, UFC live from the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Without a doubt, UFC's biggest event to date and the first held in Las Vegas. The Main event will pit UFC champion Tito "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Ortiz against Brazilian phenom Vitor Belfort. Belfort fought and won his first pro-fight in Super Brawl II at the Blaisdell Arena. Two other Championship fights will take place as well as 5 preliminary bouts. Don't miss Ultimate Fighting action on big screen TV's and air-conditioned comfort. Gussie L'Mours, Friday afternoon, September 28, at 3pm. Re-broadcast at 7pm. Admission will be just $5. For tickets contact Gussie L'Mours at 836-7883. |
From the event's promoter: STEPHANE OUELLET'S OPPONENT FINALLY ANNOUNCED! JEFF DAVIS READY TO UNLEASH HIS DEMONS AT UCC 6! Montreal (Quebec) - Jeff Davis is the Mixed Martial Art (MMA) fighter that will face Top-10 ranked pro boxer Stephane Ouellet in his MMA debut. Davis is a three time UCC veteran with a record of 1-2 but still may be a bit of an unknown to many MMA and boxing fans. On October 19th, Davis will have the opportunity of a lifetime when he steps in the ring to face Stephane Ouellet at the sixth instalment if the ever popular UCC series entitled REDEMPTION. The man known as "The Possessed" started training in Kempo Karate until he earned his black belt. He went on to win a silver medal in Nic Cerio's North American championship. Davis then decided to change styles from Karate to Kickboxing and then eventually to Muay Thai. "The Possessed" has a genuine love for MMA and says that he finds it's the most complete sport in the world and with this sport he can release his "hate for all religions in the world..." Davis had a rough start in the UCC with his 15 seconds loss against Steve Vigneault at UCC 1. He addresses this bout by saying "...it was very bad luck but I make no excuses because Vigneault is a great fighter...". Davis second outing in the UCC was stopped short by a very controversial ending that left a bad taste in his mouth. He came back at UCC 4 with a vengeance, on that night the fans finally got to see "The Possessed" as he mounted and pounded his opponent until the referee stepped in to stop the fight. Davis feels that the UCC gave him a chance to be someone in a world of martial arts. "When I walk in the street in my hometown, everybody recognise me and this feels pretty strange. I owe a lot to the UCC...". Davis has made it clear that Stephane Ouellet is his favourite boxer but he wants to show that a boxed isn't versatile enough and that it will be easy for him to take Ouellet out. "...the people inside of me (Legion) wants me to take his soul...". Jeff Davis is doing everything in his power to be stronger than ever for this battle. He has been training with former pro boxer Fernand Marcotte who once fought Sugar Ray Leonard. Davis exclaims, "My punches, my defence and my kicks will be ready for the bloody party on October 19th!". Soon it will be time to put the talk aside and step up to the challenge inside the Ring of FuryTM. Has Davis learned enough from his three UCC fights to overcome the seasoned Boxer? Will Ouellet learn enough before October 19th to be successful in the toughest sport on earth... or will he become yet another boxer who fails at the game called MMA? At UCC 6 : REDEMPTIONTM we will find out!!! 100% ACTION - 100% RESPECT - 100% ADRENALINE www.universalcombat.com |

In the past, you may have read about FCF reporter Marc Scott's journey to Thailand where he trained and fought Muay Thai. Ever the world traveler, Marc is currently on a new quest, this time to beautiful Brazil, where he will "drink from the source" at the new Gracie Camp... Part Three: Rio De Janeiro I came, I saw, I tapped...then I tapped again, and again. Another night in Gracie Barra, and another night to see some of the best Jiu-Jitsu Rio has to offer. Located in the heart of the Barra Beach area, the school is one of the Meccas of Jiu-Jitsu in the world. Perhaps rivaled only by Carlson Gracie in terms of the amount of champions to be produced, Gracie Barra is a powerhouse to be reckoned with. At five o'clock we get in the car and are driven down to Barra for the nightly training. Barra is a testing ground for all that we learned earlier in the day. In the morning classes we are concentrating on only one or two positions and Barra is where we try to make these positions work. The ride to Barra takes about thirty minutes and we leave the tranquility and quiet of Vergem Grande, where we are staying, for the sights and sounds of Barra. Ascending up the four fights of stairs in the health club where Barra Gracie is located, you can hear it before you see it. The children's class is going on, but don't let the name fool you these "kids" have been practicing Jiu-Jitsu for many years already; by the time they are fifteen and receive their blue belt, they may already have as much as six years of training under their belt. Class at Barra is like class at any other school in the world except maybe for the amount of sheer talent in the room, many of the people training would have no problem opening a school of their own, I count at least three world champions, two Gracies and a host of incredibly talented purple and brown belts, all of whom take great delight in tying me in knots. After our short warm-up and stretching we are taught one or two techniques; after we work on those for a while, the sparring comes. The amount of talent in the room makes every sparring match worth its weight in gold, even when I lose (which happens with alarming frequency). I still learn small details and tricks of the game. As Roger Gracie manhandles me, I begin to see where some of my weaknesses lie. He taps me twice in ten minutes and I move on to a younger blue belt who fights like a whirling dervish, rolling and twisting to take my back or keep me at bay. Throughout the training it is like this. When I am not rolling, I am sitting back and watching any of the various black belts go at it. Soon it is time to roll again and time to try to apply what I learned back at the Gracie camp in class, amazingly some of what I learned seems to have rubbed off and I find myself applying the techniques. The class takes place under the watchful eye of Carlos Gracie Jr. and the senior instructors. What is amazing is the lack of ego in the room, with so many great people no one is out to prove anything to anyone, they are only there to get good. Unfortunately eight o'clock comes by too soon and the class winds down and we make our way out and onto the street. It feels like a bit like a party that has come to an end, but with the knowledge it will still be there tomorrow, we go home to rest and get ready for another day at Gracie Barra. |

BJ Penn & Gil Castillo At IFC Warrior's Challenge XV By Roberto Martinez BJ Penn was at IFC XV this past weekend to support Paul Buentello who trained for his fight at the American Kickboxing Academy. BJ was kind enough to answer a few quick questions. FCF: How many more fights before you get a title shot? BJP: Hopefully 1 more fight and we're looking to face the winner of the Pulver-Hallman fight. I think I'm going to fight Uno first and after that the winner of me and Uno fights the Pulver-Hallman winner. Nothing's guaranteed though. FCF: Where are you training now? BJP: I'm training up at American Kickboxing Academy with Javier Mendez and my brothers at Legends. FCF: What happened with you and John Lewis? BJP: I felt I wanted to take control of my own career. I wanted to do my own thing. That's pretty much it. Gil Castillo was on hand at the IFC Warrior's Challenge XV on Friday to support four local guys as well as receive his IFC Welterweight belt. Gil is set to face Dave Menne at UFC 33 in Las Vegas on September 28th. He took some time out and answered a few questions I had. FCF: Where do you train? GC: Cesar Gracie's. I've been training jiu-jitsu for about 6 years now. I wrestled for a long time before that. I'm also boxing. FCF: What is your opinion of Dave Menne? GC: Tough guy. I didn't know too much about him. I did know he was ranked pretty high. He's a tough guy. He bangs and he doesn't back down. FCF: Many people have never heard of you and don't feel you deserve a title shot in the UFC. What do you say to that? GC: I have a very good answer to that. I'm 16-0 and I own 3 titles right now. A lot of guys they put in the UFC are there for their first fight or second fight. My question is why? Why don't they put someone that's done no-holds-barred for a while? Not some guy that won a wrestling tournament somewhere or a boxing tournament somewhere. It's a whole different game. It's like comparing dancing to judo. That's why you find boxers getting smoked in there and wrestlers getting smoked too. You have to have an all-around game. FCF: Did you sign a contract with the UFC? GC: We have a 3-fight deal. Depending on what happens in this fight here will dictate whether I need to drop down to 170 [lbs.] again, because that's my natural weight. FCF: How did your guys do tonight? GC: We had four guys fighting. We went 2-2. That was our guy in the main event. He lost on a cut, which could happen to anybody, but then again you have to give kudos to his guy for knowing how to cut you. That's a skill in itself. The knees and elbows will tell ya. FCF: What can fans expect come September 28th? GC: I just heard that they're putting our fight first. They have 3 title fights and title fights as you know are five 5-minute rounds. So to schedule their pay-per-view time they want to see what the first title fight will do. Is it going to be 1 round or is it going to be 5 rounds? So they're putting us first before even the preliminary fights so they can see what preliminary fights they can fit in because they have to put ours, the title fights, on pay-per-view. I'm going in there first and I'm expecting this thing to go the distance. I'm fully conditioned for this thing. I just fought 25 minutes in my last fight and he is going to be a bit bigger than me so it will tire me out a bit more, but I think I know how to deal with it. He's tough to submit, so I'm not going to try something other people have failed at. I'm going to be ready to outpoint this guy. FCF: Anything else you'd like to say? GC: Don't count me out at all. You guys will be looking at one of the best fights of the night. |

From the event's promoter: to Extreme Challenge Win Hughes, now 29-3, had to fight off a guillotine choke after lifting Gomm into the air early in their bout... he slowly freed himself over a 30-second period, then slammed Gomm to the floor. Gomm, who owns a win over Chris Brennan and went the distance with Sean Sherk, fared well in the opening round before Hughes took over in the second. A huge slam started the round and Hughes dominated position and landed several big punches before referee Lonnie Foster halted the fight at 3:18 of Round 2. In a feature bout, Jason Medina fought out of a tight triangle by Justin Ellison and scored a TKO win when Ellison tapped from strikes at 4:04 of Round 1. Medina improved to 6-1. Phil Henderson, formerly of the Lion's Den in Tulsa, picked up his first victory when Rick garvesen tapped from a guillotine choke at 2:43 of the first round. Henderson landed some big knees and Gravesen handed out some good punches in the early stages of the bout. Randy Couture prospect Nathan Quarry won his debut over Pat Miletich-trained Andrew McFedries when McFedries verbally submitted from exhaustion at 3:03 of the second round. The two were undefeated in amateur competition and show much promise in the pros. Three Utah fighters scored victories... David Bancroft, Dave Phillips and Kevin Ascarte... although Ascarte is from San Diego, he is training in Utah. Chad Davis of Los Angeles notched his first victory by outlasting a game Jason Gyllenskog over 15 minutes to win a unanimous decision. Here are the official results...

We've all heard of the cowardly attack that was perpetrated on our nation early today by self-serving hate mongers that killed thousands of innocent men, woman and children. Two hijacked planes crashed into New York's twin towers and killed an undetermined amount of people at this time -- as many people are still missing. FCF has been hit hard as staff members had family and friends who were working in the towering landmarks at the time of the attack. One of whom has been thankfully confirmed as alive and well -- my cousin whose life was spared as he was able to escape the uncalled for terror -- but at this time the whereabouts of several others are uncertain. We are praying that they will be coming home. Full Contact Fighter feels this action is the lowest form of cowardice and vows to help its country in any manner possible. We are confident that the USA will act swiftly in ending the reign of these cowards known as terrorists and the countries that house and protect them. This is the most devastating thing to ever happen in my life -- Many people are dying and still other attacks are going on. My life has changed forever and no words at this time can describe my feelings and the sorrow for those families that lost their sons, daughters, mothers and fathers in such a senseless act -- my prayers go out to all, on the saddest day of my life. Joel Gold Anyone able to donate blood, please call the Red Cross at 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or your local hospital and see if and when they are able to take donations. On a side note to all who have called and e-mailed us out of concern for our welfare, everyone at the FCF home office in New York are safe and sound, thank you for your concern. Phone circuits in the area are overloaded due to people checking on family and friends. |

In the past, you may have read about FCF reporter Marc Scott's journey to Thailand where he trained and fought Muay Thai. Ever the world traveler, Marc is currently on a new quest, this time to beautiful Brazil, where he will "drink from the source" at the new Gracie Camp...
Part Four & Final: Rio De Janeiro Rio is gone now, or at least I am gone, and to the best of my knowledge Rio is still there. Ten days anywhere is not enough to truly say you can understand a city and I feel as if I had a only a slight taste of what Rio and Brazil had to offer. The training is all over now and I will return to my regular training with my friends and coach, I will no longer be called the gringo and singled out of the group by my lack of Portuguese and minimal skill in Jiu-Jitsu. After ten days I am happy to be able to come home and see my girlfriend and try to make what I learned during my trip work on the mat. It is hard to judge just how much I have learned or how much I will retain, only in the days to come will I be able to see what I will remember. Amazingly after ten days of the Gracie diet I have put almost ten pounds on, the four large meals a day seem to have filled out my waistline yet I have more energy than I may have ever had in my life, the constant fruit, vegetables and fish seem to have cleaned my system, a cleansing which will not last long as I already feel the urge to hit the bars and wash away the good living with margaritas and steak. I appreciate the hospitality I received from my new friends at the Gracie Camp and Gracie Barra will stay with me. I'd like to thank Marcio Feitosa for showing so much; Carlos Gracie Jr. for enduring my endless questions about Jiu-Jitsu and the early history of the sport; Luca Atalla editor of Gracie Magazine for not saying anything when I complained there was only one world champion teaching at the camp, he then brought Mundial Champion "Soca" to round out the teaching staff. Along with Steve from England and Suzuki-san from Tokyo I think we all made strides in our game and definitely got to have a taste of what Jiu-Jitsu is. On my last day in Rio we went to the famous Corcovado monument of Christ on the hill, a symbol of Brazil. As I stood on the hill over looking Rio, I said my goodbyes but knew I would soon be back. |
From the event's promoter: NHB Hits Savannah in September The long awaited rematch between Todd "Crazy T" Carney and Charles "Crazyhorse" Bennett will take place on this card! The last time these two battled, Crazyhorse KO'd Carney. Carney doesn't like to lose. Since that fight, Carney has won five other NHB matches and, most recently, a pro boxing match where he knocked out his opponent in less than a minute. Carney is ready to go to war. Fans can look forward to five professional bouts including a fight featuring Savannah's own Muhsin Corrbrey who just came off of a big win in Weirton, WV against Jerry Hackney. Five amateur fights are also slated for the card. "We want to be all about the fighters," said Reality Sports Inc. President Jamie Levine. "We want to give up-and-coming fighters the chance to get their first experience in fighting at a big show." The last RSF event in Savannah, GA sold out to a standing room only crowd! Tickets will be available at the National Guard Armory, 1248 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, GA on Friday, September 21 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and on Saturday, September 22 (9 a.m. to the event start at 7:00 p.m.). Photos and report by Marcelo Alonso Translation by Luiz Eduardo Vianna Originally printed in the July 2001 issue of FCF Everybody knows that there are professional athletes who are attracted to the use of steroids with the intention of improving their performances at any cost. Be it on the courts, fields, swimming pools or rings of combat, the doping cases in sports grow at a frightening rate. In Brazil, Magno Penha's case brought up, once again, the possibility that has been studied by doctors around the world. Can the Growth Hormone (GH) cause cancer? If to get in a Vale-Tudo ring being 100% physically is already very hard, what about going there having Leukemia, in an advanced stage? "I didn't even have the strength to warm up," remembers the author of the exploit, the Brazilian Magno Penha who obviously didn't know about his illness when he was invited by Sérgio Batarelli to fight in the Ultimate Combat, held in July of last year, in Salt Lake City, USA. "I thought that the tiredness that I had been feeling in the previous weeks was a result from the steroids that I had been using since 1995," said the runner-up of IVC 13. Even in his fatigued condition, Penha entered the ring to face American fighter John Mokiao. "Right after the fight started, I saw that I didn't have the physical condition to fight. In a few seconds the guy took me down, passed my guard and got a leg lock, I was able defend it, but then he got my arm. The crowd was yelling, 'break it!' and I got power from I don't know where and defended. Then I passed his guard and got the mount. I was totally exhausted so I faked a punch, he raised his arm to defend and I submitted him with an arm-bar. It was a God thing," remembers the athlete that passed out and left the ring with an oxygen mask. Click her to continue with the article |
From the event's promoter: together at Grapplers Quest! May God Bless you all... I first want to send my condolences to all those affected by the terrible act of violence on our country, including some of my very close and personal friends. Honestly, the last thing on my mind [Tuesday] was Grapplers Quest's National Championships in Harlem, New York which is supposed to take place in just [7 days]. I composed myself after [Tuesday's] trauma and decided to do my due diligence with ensuring I could update all my competitors, supporters, and specators as soon as possible. I followed up with The City College of New York and they said everything is OK at the venue and we can proceed as planned for Septemebr 23rd, 2001. Terrorist attacks cannot stop America's spirit or way of life and we must continue to show the world why we are the most powerful nation. Along these lines...I am proud to say that The Grapplers Quest National Championships scheduled for Sunday, September 23rd will proceed as planned. The tournament will also serve as a friendly gathering and memorial for those lost. We will have a moment of silence and a special singing of the National Anthem in honor of freedom and those lost. I will see you all a week from [today], as planned. We will unite and triumph together! Sincerely, Brian Cimins President and Founder Grapplers Quest Webmaster notation: Bracketed text was changed due to time lag between press release and posting date |

UFC "Devastated" by Untimely News By Aaron Crecy An unlikely injury has forced Brazilian Vitor Belfort to withdraw from his bout versus Ultimate Fighting Championship Light Heavyweight titleholder Tito Ortiz at UFC 33 in Las Vegas. Scheduled to depart from Brazil on Friday for the September 28 fight in Las Vegas, Belfort reportedly suffered deep lacerations when his arm smashed through a window during training on Tuesday. "Apparently, Belfort's arm inadvertently went through a window next to the ring in his gym when he threw a punch, opening a cut on the triceps and upper arm that required 30 stitches to close," explained beleaguered UFC president Dana White. "I spoke with his doctor, and he will be unable to train for at least 40 days." It is the second potentially ruinous event that has befallen UFC 33 in the past week. First, in the wake of the World Trade Center bombing, it was announced that the middleweight championship boxing match between Felix Trinidad and Bernard Hopkins originally slated for September 15 at Madison Square Garden was rescheduled to Saturday, September 29. With such a high level a championship bout now taking place the same weekend as UFC 33, fans who might once have purchased both pay-per-view events two weeks apart may be unwilling to do so on consecutive evenings. Needing at least 100,000 pay-per-view buys just to break even, the loss of Belfort could further detract from the UFC's ability to achieve that goal. "We are devastated by this news," White said dejectedly. "However, I want to assure the fans that we are doing the best we can to replace Vitor with credible opponent." White mentioned former UFC mainstay Ken Shamrock as a potential replacement for Belfort, pending negotiations. However, an agreement was yet to be reached as of early Wednesday morning. Because Shamrock could have difficulty making the 204.9 lb. weight limit for the light heavyweight class, it is likely that a match up between the Lion's Den legend and Ortiz would be a heavyweight non-title fight. Vladimir Matyushenko, already scheduled to fight Kevin Randleman at UFC 33, is another possible fill-in. |
Thursday - September 20, 2001 |
Zuffa Fails to Reach Agreement with Frank or Ken Shamrock By Aaron Crecy According to sources close to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Frank Shamrock was Zuffa's first choice to replace Vitor Belfort against Tito Ortiz in UFC 33. However, the offer was withdrawn when Shamrock insisted that Ortiz make the 185 lb. weight class. Next, Zuffa approached Ken Shamrock with an offer of $180,000, but Shamrock declined, countering instead with a price tag of $500,000. Then, the UFC offered Vladimir Matyushenko $40,000 to fight Ortiz and an additional $40,000 for the victory -- he declined. Now, UFC insiders have confirmed that Kevin Randleman will face Tito Ortiz for the UFC light heavyweight belt on September 28. The financial terms were not disclosed, but they are believed to be in the same range as Matyushenko's offer. Randleman brings a record of 9 - 5 into the Octagon and looks to redeem TKO losses in his last two fights versus Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture. As a result, Matyushenko may not compete in UFC 33. |
Vladdy Now in to Replace Belfort In the ever-changing world of MMA matchmaking, Tito's opponent has been switched yet again. Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko will step in to clean up the mess left by the broken window that took Vitor Belfort out of the UFC 33 headline title match against Tito Ortiz. Stay tuned for further developments. |

Press Conference By Aaron Crecy Lorenzo Fertitta, managing partner of Zuffa Sports Entertainment-which owns the UFC-served as the master of ceremonies. "What we have done, I believe, is put together one of the best cards in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championships," said Fertitta. "I'm pleased to announce that the fight is sold out. It's for all intents and purposes, sold out. We sold the majority of the tickets in the first two weeks that we put the tickets on sale, which is significant because Las Vegas has not been an easy place to sell tickets with all the different entertainment options." Nevada Athletic Commission Executive Director Marc Ratner was also in attendance, along with commissioners Flip Homansky and Amy Ayoub. "Seven or eight years ago this sport would not have been welcome here," Ratner stated. "But with the changes that have been made and the safety factors that are involved now, we're very excited to have it and I'm looking forward to it." It was Ratner' commission that unanimously approved mixed martial arts for sanctioning in the state of Nevada on July 23, 2001. Now, MMA shares the same worldwide stage as boxing. "I'm a fan of mixed martial arts, and I have been for a long, long time," commented Homansky. "I respect the abilities of the gentlemen that get into the ring and compete at the highest level. I am happy that we have been able to treat this sport the same as we treat boxing. The fighters of mixed martial arts will get the same respect as the heavyweight champions of the world. We welcome you, we respect you and I look forward to a great fight Friday night." UFC president Dana White introduced each of the fighters, calling the Hallman-Pulver fight the "first grudge match I've ever seen in the UFC." Middleweight Championship Gil Castillo, contender "It's an honor to fight in the UFC. It's a dream of any fighter to be here. This is the best organization in the world and it was unexpected that I got called for this fight. I had the honor of meeting Dana and [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva at my last fight. They asked me to d this one and I was thrilled to take a shot at the title here. I'm looking forward to putting on a good show. I fight to win-win, lose or draw, I'm going to give you guys a good show." Dave Menne, contender "It's obviously an honor to be back in the UFC and an even bigger honor to have the title fight. It's been a long time coming, so I'm going to do my best to take that title home. You can expect a war out there. I always push the fight the fight, and I always push it to the third, the fourth and the fight round. Everybody that's seen me fight knows if anyone comes up against me they're going to have to knock me out or kill me. So, expect to see a nice fight." Dennis Hallman, challenger "First, I want to thank Dana White for being a man of his word and giving me the title shot. Next, I'd like to say, [turns to face Pulver] time's coming, guy. I've waited a long time. I got an opportunity to train full time for the first with Tito Ortiz up at Big Bear. So, I'm in shape-I can go 25 [minutes] or I can go 20 seconds. [Faces Pulver again] When it gets to the ground, big guy..." Jens Pulver, champion "I'm excited to be in Vegas. It's been a long time, a big dream. This fight-what are you going to say? It's been a long time. It's funny-we've been warring with words for quite a while, actually. In high school, I never had the pleasure of wrestling him, but I got to see him. He was a tough person then, he was strong, a wiry guy. He was definitely go get 'em. So, I wish him the best of luck on Friday, I mean I do, because I'm going to explode on him. He says 20 seconds, this is just another guy gonna take me down and submit me. I mean, that's every single fight. You make the mistake of saying you're superior to me. No disrespect to John Lewis, but ask him how that 12 seconds felt. When you say you're superior to me you just piss me off. So, I hope Dennis is training hard-I hope he's ready to go 25. Because he needs to go a lot longer than that if he's gonna beat me, because he ain't gonna out-condition me, he ain't gonna out-think me-I hope to God he can take me down, because otherwise he ain't got a chance. So, you guys are gonna see some shit on Friday." Vladimir Matyushenko, challenger "I want to thank everyone for being here, for having me here, Dana White for the right to fight for the title in the main event. It was kind of a surprise for me, but a good surprise. I'm ready physically and mentally and I want to thank Zuffa and UFC for giving me a chance. And I want to thank my management and trainers for getting me to this level. I promise all my fans to have a good show-we'll have fun." Tito Ortiz, champion "This is my dream and I'm sitting on top, where I expected to be. I've been training the last three months to fight Vitor Belfort from Brazil, but I guess there was this kind of freak accident and he got injured. That was a big letdown for me, I think I lost about four days of sleep due to that one. I want to fight Vladimir for stepping up-I've been watching him since he started. He hasn't known that, but I always watch the guys at my weight. I kind of look up to him a little bit-he says he has an open mind in everything he does, and I take that for granted in everything I do, too. I have an open mind in all the training and everything. It's going to be a good match coming Friday night, but like I said before, people don't blink-shit may be over quick. I'm here to stop every one of the guys they put in front of me. This is strictly a job for me. I know he's out there to do the same to me, but I don't know, his chances are slim. These guys that get a chance at the lightweight title usually don't last that long. I'm ready for a war, I was up in Big Bear for three weeks training my butt off-I think it's the hardest I ever trained in my life. This is a dream and I'm ready to step up and make the accomplishments happen. It's going to be a great match come Friday night. Vladimir is a great guy, but I feel sorry for him because he's going to get hurt, that's for sure. [Looking at Matyushenko] Good luck to you Vladdy." |

Standing Room Only Weigh-in and Autograph Signing By Aaron Crecy LAS VEGAS--The Ultimate Fighting Championship was on public display in Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon as the fighters took part in the official pre-fight weigh-in. While all the fighters successfully made weight, light heavyweight challenger Vladimir Matyushenko seemed to have a difficult time and did not answer the first call. However, the Belarus native eventually appeared and weighed in at 2051/4 pounds, as the Nevada Athletic Commission gave all fighters a one pound allowance. In the other light heavyweight fight, Chuck Liddell weighed in at 203 pounds while Brazilian Murilo Bustamante weighed a scant 199 pounds.

Introduction by Aaron Crecy Forget for a moment that Vitor Belfort was a last minute scratch from UFC 33. And that a portion of the pay-per-view audience was deprived of the final nine minutes of the light heavyweight championship fight. For a moment, transport yourself to a ringside seat -- or any seat for that matter -- at the sold out Mandalay Bay Events Center on the Las Vegas Strip. Do this, and you would surely appreciate the latest rendition of the Ultimate Fighting Championship for what it was -- an exciting show that featured well-matched fights from top to bottom. That six of the eight fights on the card -- and all of the bouts on the pay-per-view broadcast -- went the distance, is testament to the competitive level of the combatants contracted by UFC talent scout Joe Silva. And the three fighters who served as fill-ins for those originally selected -- Gil Castillo, Yves Edwards and Vladimir Matyushenko -- were impressive even in defeat, displaying skill and courage versus highly skilled opponents. How could the mixed martial arts purist not appreciate Jens Pulver, who stepped up to the challenge and beat ground fighter Dennis Hallman at his own game? Who could leave unimpressed with Tito Ortiz's thorough domination of a game Matyushenko? What could be more ironic than Brazilian Jiu Jitsu specialist Murilo Bustamante landing a stream of heavy right hands that damaged feared puncher Chuck Liddell? Would any deny that Dave Menne, by virtue of a devastating arsenal of knees and kicks that battered the relentless Castillo, is among the sport's elite? Unfortunately, the television audience may be left with a bitter taste in their mouths. Meanwhile, Zuffa faces the unenviable task of selling another event to what will surely be a skeptical target market in just over thirty days time. But let us not allow the disappointment outweigh the drama, because in the end, UFC 33 delivered as promised -- compelling fights and courageous fighters.
Fight Summaries By Marc Scott Photos by Aaron Crecy Din Thomas vs. Fabiano Iha Both Iha and Thomas were coming off losses in previous UFC's. Both fighters wanted to prove that their losses were flukes. Iha opened the match with kicks and Din countered with his strong punching. Iha managed to bring Din down and looked to apply one of his trademark arm-bars but Din defended well and Iha was unable to apply the submission. Din brought the fight back to standing and Iha seemed stunned by the power of Din's punches he received while standing. In the second round, Iha opened with an unorthodox flying punch. Which achieved very little. Both fighters clinched and Iha seemed to have the upper hand using strong uppercuts to bloody Din. In the third round though, Din came on strong with punches and Iha looked for the takedown. Both fighters found themselves again clinched against the fence. Din controlled the clinch with powerful uppercuts and Iha began to look tired and attempted to take Din down. After jockeying for position, Din landed in Iha's guard and remained their through much of the remainder of the round. Thomas def. Iha - Unanimous Decision Ricardo Almeida vs. Eugene Jackson Almeida came into this fight looking to avenge his loss to Matt Lindland. The match started strong, Jackson went to touch hands and Almeida flew through him trying a flying knee. Jackson seemed surprised and Almeida took the opportunity to bring Jackson down in a spectacular fashion. Jackson looked for a guillotine which Almeida defended well. Jackson ended up with Almeida in his half-guard from there Almeida worked his way up. Off a kick Jackson took Almeida down from there Almeida worked a strong triangle choke to get the win by way of tap-out at 4:06 of the first round. Almeida def. Jackson - Submission (triangle choke) 4:06 1st Rd. Jutaro Nakao vs. Tony DeSouza This fight started off slow but ended with a bang. An uneventful first round with both fighters spending the majority of the first round clinched against the fence. The audience booed throughout the round due to the lack of action. The second round saw Nakao open with a strong right kick and devastating straight left punch which landed flush and brought DeSouza down. Nakao followed DeSouza to the ground and began striking the stunned DeSouza. DeSouza was unable to defend himself and the fight was stopped 15 seconds in the second round. Nakao def. DeSouza - TKO :15 of the 2nd Rd. Gil Castillo vs. Dave Menne Easily the fight of the night, though Menne was clearly dominate, Castillo never gave an inch. Though bloodied and bruised he showed great heart and attacked throughout the fight. Menne used strong leg kicks and skillful reversals to clearly control this entire fight. Over and over, Castillo would try to take Menne down, Menne would sprawl and go for a guillotine choke. Though Menne was unable to finish the chokes, the strategy served him well throughout the fight. When Castillo would successfully take Menne down, Menne would punch his way standing. During the clinch, Menne used sharp knees and strong punches to punish Castillo. Menne wins the unanimous decision and takes home the belt. Menne def. Castillo - Unanimous Decision Matt Serra vs. Yves Edwards Matt Serra planned to finish this fight on the ground. He started by quickly bringing Yves Edwards down. Matt looked for an ankle lock and then transitioned to a heel hook which Edwards rolled out of. Edwards ended up with Serra in his half guard which Serra quickly passed to gain side control. Edwards worked his way up standing and as Serra came in, landed a strong uppercut which dazed Serra. Serra went to the ground with Edwards in control. Serra managed to reverse positions and ended the round with Edwards in an armbar, as the time ran out. Serra spent the start of the second round attempting to take Edwards down. Edwards defended well, but Serra began to take control of the fight, when Serra eventually took Edwards down. Serra took Edwards back and attempted a rear-naked choke, which though Edwards defended against seemed to secure Serra's dominance of the round. The third round had Serra yet again try a rear naked choke from the takedown. This time, Edwards stood up with Serra on his back. Edwards managed to pry Serra off his back and they both ended sitting on the mat. After a scramble to get up, Serra moves in to take Edwards down again. Edwards attempted to use his knees but the fight ended with Edwards taken down yet again. Serra def. Edwards - Majority Decision Murillo Bustamante vs. Chuck Liddell If this fight had a script, it would read simply Bustamante shoots, Liddell defends. Bustamante spent this entire fight trying to bring Liddell to the ground. Liddell would sprawl and Bustamante would stand up and look to shoot again. Over and over again, this would repeat itself. Bustamante showed a surprising amount of striking skill at various points in the fight choosing to go toe to toe with Liddell. Bustamante managed to stun Liddell on more than one occasion with punches. Liddell fought a very defensive fight, but he also fought a smart fight, by keeping the fight standing. He could use his punches and kicks to keep Bustamante at bay. When the fighters would clinch, Liddell would have the upper hand with his strong uppercuts and hooks. This strategy won Liddell the unanimous decision, though the crowd seemed unconvinced and boos could be heard throughout. Liddell def. Bustamante - Unanimous Decision Jens Pulver vs. Dennis Hallman Sometimes two great fighters, two exciting fighters who bring in talent, athleticism and a hearty rivalry can have an incredibly unexciting match. Though the match saw a few moments of excitement, almost the entirety of the five rounds was spent with Pulver in Hallman's guard. Before the fight, Hallman claimed that Pulver would not last on the ground with him. Pulver in fact, lasted much, much longer. On the ground, Pulver's defense against submissions proved too much for Hallman. When the fighters stood, Pulver clearly had the upper hand. There was only one moment when Hallman had Pulver in danger with an armbar on the ground. Other than that, Pulver dominated throughout the fight. In the waning seconds of the last round, Hallman out of desperation even attempted a pro-wrestling flying dropkick, which was completely ineffective. Jens Pulver retains the championship belt in an unexciting match. Pulver def. Hallman - Unanimous Decision Tito Ortiz vs. Vladimir Matyushenko A last minute injury forced Vitor Belfort to drop from the evening's main event. Vitor was replaced by Vladimir Matyushenko of the rAw fighting team. Matyushenko fought a very defensive match against Tito and spent much of the match on the ground with Tito in control. Matyushenko appeared strong enough to prevent Tito pnching an effective offense. Much of the match was spent with Tito in Matyushenko's guard while Matyushenko held on. When the fight would be standing, Matyushenko would throw strong but ineffective punches. Tito was able to defend against the attacks and throw counter punches. Only in the final round did Tito come on with a strong enough offense to clearly dominate a round. The majority of this fight being spent with Tito attempting to open up an attack and Matyushenko holding. Ortiz def. Matyushenko - Unanimous Decision |
