Superstar Gym (Jesus Is Lord Gym), Campbell Industrial Park, Kapolei, Hawaii December 30, 2000 By Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com Brennan Kamaka and company put on an excellent event and you would never have known that this was their first event that they ever held. The event ran like a well-oiled machine. It was held in Superstar Gym, which is the extensive gym that the Jesus Is Lord team trains. The crowd that gathered into the gym was treated to great fights and great food. The organizers brought and applied their collective experience from competing under a number of different organizations and applied every detail into this event. The fighters came out under their own theme music, received great trophies, and they provided the judges and press with a copy of the fight card, rules, and event poster in a presentational folder on a table full of pupu's [Hawaiian term for finger foods or hors d'orveurs]. As my brother, Mike, and I leaned over to T. Jay Thompson [Super Brawl promoter], who was one of the judges, to elbow him in the ribs every time we took a bite of some of the great food, he would remind us "don't get used to this," with a chuckle. Local standout Niko Vitale served as an excellent referee. The competitors were very well matched up and fought like veterans. After the almost signature reaction of all of Team Tiger rushing into the ring to congratulate their fighter Alex on his victory or a game David Santiago, Brennan and Kai Kamaka came into the ring and took control of the situation and stated that any type of unsportsman-like conduct would not be tolerated. It was obvious that the sole purpose of this event was to promote the sport and give athletes a venue to gain experience in a safe and fair manner. My stomach and I cannot wait for the next event. It is tentatively scheduled for March 3, 2001.

From the event's promoter: in Sherbrooke, Quebec GET READY FOR UCC 3, BATTLE FOR THE BELTS! Canada readies itself for the third installment of Canada's premier fight promotion, the Universal Combat Challenge (UCC). With now less than a month until the traditional "show time", the UCC and it's Universal Warriors are already well prepared to rock the rowdy town of Shebrooke, Quebec and deliver fifteen (15) action packed full contact bouts. Fans will be witnesses to six (6) championship bouts, a four man Light Heavyweight tournament and many challenge fights with athletes ranging from 150 pounds to 290 pounds. The main event if the evening will pit "Ontario's Bad Boy" Jason St-Louis against the undisputed Canadian Middleweight Champion, David "The Crow" Loiseau. These young warriors appeared side to side on the UCC's weekly MMA television show and expressed to millions of viewers why they will emerge victorious on the 27th. Judging by the rapid ticket sales for UCC 3: Battle for the BeltsTM, the public is very anxious to see who will make their prediction of guaranteed victory come true in the Ring of FuryTM. In the second main event, Montreal's own Charles Nestor will face the toughest challenge of his young career in Sean Pierson. This bout will once again pit one of Quebec's toughest against one of Ontario's most fierce fighters. The drama behind this bout has been building ever since UCC 2 where these two were supposed to meet in the ring. However the bout was postponed due to a medical issue. On January 27th, they will enter the ring with hopes of becoming the UCC World Lightweight champion. UCC 3 will also feature a Canadian lightweight title fight between the experienced champion JF Bolduc and #1 contender Phil Hughes. Hughes is a protιgι of Master Tony Blauer and is hoping to show the effectiveness of Blauer's Tactical fighting systems as he did in his debut last June at UCC 1. "BIG" Mike Hunter will also return to the UCC ring to duke it out with Mike Marshalleck for the UCC Canadian HW title in what many anticipate to be a real "HEAVYWEIGHT EXPLOSION"!!! Marshalleck who is a prison guard by trade will be looking to "lock up" BIG MIKE and secure the HW strap around his waist. Hunter assures us that he will be more than ready for ANYONE who stands across the ring from him. To determine who is the undisputed Canadian LHW champion the UCC will host a 4 man tournament where the winner and new champ will have 2 victories on the same night!! In the first round Jeremy Sills will clash with Kempo warrior Robin Moulton while the other end of the tournament will see the return of Montreal's Stephan Potvin as he goes to war with Ontario's Barney Schisler. Also don't miss the return of your favorite UCC warriors Donald Ouimet, Dirk Waardenburg, Justin Bruckmann, Tadarius Thomas, Shawn Tompkins, Steve Vigneault, Sylvain Martineau, Jeff Davis, and the debut of some of the most promising fighters around. Reserve your hotel room ASAP to be part of the UCC AFTER FIGHT PARTY!!!!!! call 1-819-565-4515 and tell the clerk you are with the UCC to get the UCC special price!!! |

From the event's promoter: SHOOTO & SUBMISSION WRESTLING IN THE WORKS FOR 2001! Jeff Osborne, HnS promoter states "For 2001, we are changing our formula a little bit. For the past two years, HnS and the Abu Dhabi Qualifiers have run together, and we got involved with SHOOTO in 2000, and these corroborations were a great success. In 2001, we want to concentrate more on developing the sport aspect of Mixed Martial arts with SHOOTO, and we want to take the Submission Wrestling and get that more attention as well". "SHOOTO has been a great addition for us, their organization is someone we hope to continue working with. By the end of 2001, we would like to be doing SHOOTO 100% of the time in HnS. In March we will retire our Pancrase division, and all the matches we have for this year will use SHOOTO rules. We want to use the year to strengthen the ties further, if we can" continues Osborne. "As for the qualifiers, we hope that our 2001 tournaments will be official American Qualifiers again as they have been for the past two years. That has been an honor, and at the 2001 event HnS will have 5 representatives. We hope in 2002 to send a team again, and the 5 qualifying tournaments will be held in one day, in September of 2001. Overwhelming feedback from fans and competitors alike tell us this is a preferred format. We also want to announce that the ADCC will be modifying the criteria for application to these tournaments that will be geared towards giving new competitors a chance to compete. More details to come, but overall, we are excited about the big ADCC weekend are planning!" concludes Osborne. ALL EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR EVANSVILLE, INDIANA'S MEMORIAL COLISEUM

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- UFC veteran Jeremy Horn [pictured] displayed some of his improved stand-up abilities over the weekend, defeating three opponents en route to winning his first-ever Toughman championship. Horn, who has been mentioned as a possible opponent next month for UFC middleweight champion Tito Ortiz, used superior accuracy and endurance to claim the heavyweight (185 to 400 pound) division. Another Miletich Martial Arts Center fighter, Robbie Lawler, won four bouts to capture the middleweight title. Lawler, a promising 18-year-old wrestler with power in both hands, will compete in the MMA Nationals on January 20th in Springfield, Illinois. Both fighters pocketed $1,000 for their efforts, although Horn stated he entered the contest for the "experience.". "It's great to win and all, but the reason for competing was to continue to work on my stand-up," Horn said. "I think I did alright, but there's plenty of room for improvement...I'm still working on it.". Ironically, Horn had to beat two other MMA fighters to claim the title. He used body shots to twice drop Dennis Reed, an Extreme Challenge and DangerZone veteran, to win a semifinal decision. Horn then outlasted a bigger (245 pounds to 205) Paul Wells in the finals. Wells, a former Extreme Challenge fighter who once fought Bobby Hoffman for the EC heavyweight title, used his size well early, but fatigue played a major role in his demise. Wells advanced to the Finals with KO victories in 6 and 11 seconds. |

From Jeff T: Just when we believed Mixed Martial Arts has turned the corner in California, Governor Gray Davis dashed our hopes. On January 4th, the California Athletic Commission sent the following letter to the members of its Mixed Martial Arts Committee. Lobbying efforts have already begun with the Governor's office and the legislature. If you love Mixed Martial Arts and want to see it grow, now is the time to get involved. From: Rob Lynch, Executive Officer Subject: Mixed Martial Arts I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings but the Governor's Office denied the Commission's funding request to regulate mixed martial arts. This denied funding request automatically forced the Office of Administrative Law to disapprove both the proposed amateur and professional mixed martial arts regulations. The Governor's office recommends that the commission seek legislation to gain an appropriation (funding) to regulate mixed martial arts. If this is the course we choose, it will require a 2/3 majority vote in the legislature. If the bill is signed by the Governor it would become effective January 1, 2002 and the commission would then have to repeat the regulatory process. I want to make it perfectly clear that the commission supported the regulation of mixed martial arts as did the Director of Department of Consumer Affairs and the Secretary of State and Consumer Service Agency. Thank you for your understanding and diligence. |

From Grapplers World & Eddie Goldman: Dear Mixed Martial Arts Supporter, As you are well aware, most of the American public is still not entitled to the opportunity to watch mixed martial arts events on pay-per-view on cable television. Since the majority of US households rely on cable for pay-per-view events, this is a major problem. Not only are the cable companies making the decisions for us as to what we are allowed and not allowed to watch, but this censorship is also slowing down the growth of our sport by artificially denying it a critical source of revenue. Recently Jake Rossen, a writer who covers mixed martial arts for ign.com, interviewed Joe Boyle, the public relations spokemen for In Demand, the pay-per-view network that has a virtual monopoly on pay-per-view distribution to cable television. Boyle basically said anything is possible in regards to mixed martial arts events appearing back on cable, but that In Demand has no plans of airing them. In the past, the In Demand representatives have stated that they have received numerous requests for these events. An article on our previous e-mail campaign appeared in "Multichannel News," the leading cable television trade publication. However, the noise our community was making was not yet loud enough to make a difference. Let comments like these be a rallying cry for our cause. So, once again, we will be going after the In Demand monopoly for our right to choose. With the tremendous safety record of the legitimate mixed martial arts promotions, the recent running of UFC and IFC shows in Atlantic City, New Jersey, under the sanctioning of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, and the adoption of rules for mixed martial arts by the California State Athletic Commission, there is simply no excuse for not giving this sport a shot! All you have to do is write a simple message stating that you want to see mixed martial arts offered on cable on pay-per-view. With this in mind: 1. Please be polite. 2. Suggest that organizations like the UFC and IFC, which have run numerous state-sanctioned shows and have impeccable safety records, be given a chance to run trial shows, and that In Demand takes a look at the buy rates and safety standards. In the past, when UFC was still on cable, its buy rate was quite high, often surpassing that of pro wrestling. 3. Inform them of the upcoming dates of these competitions (January 19 in Atlantic City for IFC and on February 23 in Atlantic City for the UFC). 4. Let them know that these sports are now 100% legal in many US states, and that they are aired on cable in Canada by Viewers Choice Canada and Canal Indigo. 5. Inform them that In Demand, Time Warner, and AT&T are acting like monopolies, and that they have no right not to respect our right to choose. 6. Remind them that a growing number of people are dropping cable for satellite services such as DirecTV and the Dish Network which do offer mixed martial arts events. The direct email links are as follows (In Demand needs to be hit the hardest): In Demand Pay-Per-View - http://www.indemand.com/ frames.asp?page=about&item=contact AT&T Cable - http://www.broadband.att.com/ pages/contact.html Time Warner Cable - http://www.timewarner.com /corp/about/cablesys/twcable/request.html Repeat this process as many times as possible. Thank you for believing! The Grapplers World Staff and Eddie Goldman, "No Holds Barred" on eYada.com |

Every time an opponent punches, he opens himself up for a counter attack. It is the nature of fighting. Very often the more a fighter commits to a technique the more susceptible he is to counter strikes. It is a chess match. Whoever executes the most effective counters is usually the winner. So it is imperative to learn to counter the most commonly executed punch, the jab. Stopping the jab and retaliating not only prevents the jab from landing, it slows or stops any intended succession of punches. The following pictures illustrate two basic methods of "catch and shoot." When fighting, it is beneficial to use both counter methods so as not to become predictable in your retaliation.
Picture 1A: Your opponent begins to fire a jab.
Picture 2A: As the jab extends toward you, your rear hand leaves the side of your face and is placed in the line of fire. Your palm is exposed toward the jab and you stiffen your forearm to absorb the impact. The catching hand is close to your face so you do not overextend and unnecessarily expose any target.
Picture 3A: The moment you catch the jab, shoot one back at your opponent. As you are delivering this counter, be sure to increase your power by stepping forward. The key to successfully landing the counter is to react instantaneously.
Picture 1B: Your opponent begins to fire a jab.
Picture 2B: As the jab extends, catch it with the rear hand and, using your fingertips, redirect the jab in a downward motion. This is a subtle movement. Do not push the jab down, lowering your rear arm and exposing your face. Using your fingertips is enough force to move your opponent's jab off course. The more force behind the incoming jab, the more off course it will be redirected.
Picture 3B: Using the same hand, shoot your rear straight over the top of the redirected jab and thrust your punch at your opponent's chin.
Picture 4B: Shifting forward, follow through with a lead hook.
No matter what method of counter attack you choose to employ, it is a general rule if you land one punch on the counter try to land two. If those connect, shoot for three and four and keep going until you are no longer in position to effectively land the counter strikes or your opponent is knocked out.

Superstar Gym (Jesus Is Lord Gym) Campbell Industrial Park, Kapolei, Hawaii March 3, 2001 By Chris Onzuka - Chris@Onzuka.com After an incredible inaugural event, Brennan Kamaka and company are already deeply engulfed in preparation for an even better event. Hawaii has produced some incredible fighters like John Lewis, Kimo, Ray "Bradda" Cooper, Ron Jhun, and Baret Yoshida, especially for being such a small place and having a small population. And this was accomplished with absolutely no amateur division at all. Well, that is changing. Egan Inoue was the first to put on an amateur shootfighting event in Hawaii and held it at his gym. Other than that, amateur events have been nonexistent. Kamaka is trying to change that and he will accept nothing but a safe and fair environment to do it in. The first event was made up of local Hawaii fighters from different schools. This time, Kamaka is going to reach out across the "pond" for some talent from the west coast. Team Washington is made up of Carlson Gracie team member, Marcelo Alonso's students. Team Hawaii consists of the SWAT Fighting Team, Team Tiger, Jesus Is Lord and some freelance local fighters. Bringing in fighters from out of state allow Hawaii's up and coming fighters to gain experience and treat local fight fans at the same time. The final card will be released some time in February. If you have any questions call Brennan Kamaka @ (808) 864-5511 or email him at kamakae001@hawaii.rr.com. |

"It is great news for the UFC, it is truly a sad day for me...", that's how Bob Meyrowitz, CEO of eYada and SEG, began his announcement that has sold the UFC. Yesterday on Eddie Goldman's eYada show, Meyrowitz stated that he has sold all of his interests in the UFC to Lorenzo Fertitta and his Las Vegas based company Zuffa. Zuffa is an Italian word that means "to scrap" or "to fight." Fertitta, 31, owns the company in a partnership with his brother Frank and his brother-in-law Blake Sartini. It does in fact look to be excellent news for Mixed Martial Arts, besides being a big MMA fan, Fertitta served on the Nevada State Athletic Commission from December of 1996 until this earlier year. Fertitta's spot on the Commission was taken by Dr. Edwin "Flip" Homansky when Fertitta quit to due to the time demands in his new job as president of Station Casinos. According to Fertitta, he will continue with his responsibilities at Station Casinos and Dana White, Tito Ortiz's former manager, will run the company.
Meyrowitz stated that he feels that Mr. Fertitta will take the UFC to the great heights it deserves, and he no longer had the time or the energy to give the UFC what it needs due to his job at eYada. Meyrowitz also said that he guarantees that within 6 months the UFC will bigger and better and will be available to fans everywhere. He said that he is completely out of the UFC, and that his only involvement will be that he will buying every show on PPV, but, "I will be buying it on DirecTV and never on cable." Mr. Fertitta is a huge fan of the sport and this looks like the beginning of some very exciting developments for Mixed Martial Arts.

By Joel Gold The brackets have been selected for the Kuwait Shidokan Jitsu Warriors War I to be held February 8th in Kuwait. Four of the top No Holds Barred fighters in the lightweight division will square off in an 8-man tournament. The most powerful being Matt Hughes of the U.S., the most unorthodox and dangerous, Pele Landi of Brazil, the most experienced being Dave Menne and the most technical Canada's, Carlos Newton [pictured at right]. Bracket A: Matt Hughes Vs. Jose "Pele" Landi Omar Bouiche Vs. Kareem Allah Bracket B: Dave Menne Vs. Carlos Newton Ricardo Liborio Vs. Khared Mibarak The eight fighters from around the world will battle it out with the winner receiving $60,000 in prize money. Matt Hughes [pictured at left] has beaten Dave Menne back in Extreme Challenge 21, Menne has beaten Pele in WEF 9 and Pele has beaten Hughes' trainer, Pat Miletich in WEF 8. This will surely be one of the best lightweight tournaments in the history of the sport. Pele and Hughes truly despise each other, their hatred came to a head back at WEF 9 when the two almost went to blows backstage after Pele lost to Menne. Hughes didn't mince words when expressing his feelings for Pele, "I don't like him, as I would guess most Americans that know him don't like him. He is cocky, he is an asshole, he is an idiot!" In Brazil, at Mecca 4, Pele stated, "We had a problem backstage at WEF. He treated me really bad. I love when the fights go to the personal questions [level]. It's going to be a war." Dave Menne was his usual self when asked about the fight, "I should do fine and hope to win." When asked about his previous loss to Hughes and his past win over Pele, he responded, "That fight was a while ago, Hughes and I both have grown since then. With Pele, I will be in much better shape this time and capitalize more on his mistakes." Rules for the bout seem to resemble those of the UFC and Pride. Some no-nos are, no elbows on the ground, no stomping, no kicking a downed opponent (unless he is on his back) and no striking to the back of the head. |
WEF 9 Dave Menne is declared the winner over Pele Landi in WEF 9... A must see video...get yours today, you be the judge. UFC Veteran Mark Hughes Suffers An Upset Loss In 'Super Bout' SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Two fighters from the Miletich Martial Arts Center captured weight-division titles Saturday at the 2000 U.S. MMA National Championships. Robbie Lawler, an 18-year-old from Bettendorf, Iowa, won the 170-pound division with a pair of knockout victories. He stopped Ernie Ward of Spring City, Tenn. in the first round before stopping hometown favorite Jerry Hudspeth of Springfield, Ill., at 3:05 of the first round. Steve Rusk, a former University of Illinois wrestling star, was the second Miletich fighter to win as he defeated K.C. Staples of Auburn, Ala., at 1:44 of the first round in the finals of the heavyweight division. Rusk, from Orion, Ill., weighed only 200 pounds and competed up a division. The MMA Nationals is an amateur event that pits with winners of Trials events during the year against each other in a tournament format. This year's event was held at the Eagles Club in front of a sold-out crowd. Other weight-division winner were: John Paun of Marquette, Mich., at 150 pounds; Jason Rigsby of Ottawa, Ill., at 190 pounds; and Brad Lynde of Rockton, Ill., at 210 pounds. There was a bit of an upset in a professional "super bout" as Joe Geromiller of St. Louis defeated UFC veteran Mark Hughes by rear choke at 4:12 into the second round. It was a competitive bout with Hughes controlling position early and getting several takedowns. Hughes tried an armbar midway through the second round, which Geromiller defended and gained top position. From there, Geromiller was able to get Hughes' back, which led to the finishing choke. The loss ended a run of nine straight wins by Hughes, including his UFC debut at the end of last year. In attendance were UFC fighters Pat Miletich, Jeremy Horn, Jens Pulver, Mark and Matt Hughes, Ben Earwood, Jermaine Andre, C.J. Fernandez and John Allesio. Complete results: 150 division Semifinals: John Paun def. John Wehby, 10:00 unanimous decision; Cedric Stewart def. Gabriel Lemley, 2:37 armbar. Final: Paun def. Stewart, 10:00 unanimous decision. 170 division Semifinals: Jerry Hudspeth def. Bryan Medlin, :15 Round 2 guillotine choke; Robbie Lawler def. Ernie Ward, 4:27 knockout. Final: Lawler def. Hudspeth, 3:05 ref stoppage from punches. 190 division Final: Jason Rigsby def. Eric Pettit, 5:00 corner throws in towel. 210 division Semifinals: Brad Lynde def. Brad Spent, 4:26 choke; Curt Bee def. Dan Reintz, 1:01 ref stoppage from punches. Final: Lynde def. Bee, 10:00 unanimous decision. Heavyweight division Final: Steve Rusk def. K.C. Staples, 1:44 tap from punches. Super Bout Joe Geromiller def. Mark Hughes, 4:12 Round 2 rear choke. |

Rodrigo Gracie By Tom DeFazio Recently, we did a profile of some of the guys on the Renzo Gracie Fight Team. Here's the piece we did on Rodrigo Gracie from last month's issue of Full Contact Fighter...
FCF: How long have you been training with Renzo? Rodrigo Gracie: About 5 years. FCF: You and Matt Serra just opened another school out on Long Island, and you teach here in Manhattan as well, you have a lot of talented guys on the team... RG: Yeah, we're gonna have a lot of guys, purple belts...like Joe Scarola, Joe D'Arce, "New Zealand" John, Sean Williams, Matt McTigue, Scott McTigue...Scott just got his purple. FCF: You're going back to Abu Dhabi this year? RG: Yeah, definitely. FCF: You stayed out last year due to knee problems, how is the knee doing? RG: It's fine, it's a little bit stiff, but I'm training hard. FCF: What weight division will you be going into? RG: 67-77 kilos I believe. FCF: Before that, you have a Mixed Martial Arts match. Who will you be fighting? RG: I'm fighting a guy name Kyle Demello. This guy wanted closed fists standing, and open hand on the ground. FCF: You been doing a lot of stand-up work for the match? RG: Yeah, I've been doing a lot of kickboxing with Ray Longo and a lot of Jiu-Jitsu. FCF: Is this your first pro MMA match? RG: Yes, this is the first. FCF: You plan to make a career out of it? RG: Yeah, yeah...I think I'm gonna like this. I used to do a lot of Sport Jiu-Jitsu...you know, without the gi, but I think it's time, I'm gonna try this out and see if I like it. FCF: You also have a grappling super-fight match coming up...? RG: Yeah, I have one on December 2nd or 3rd I think at the NAGA event. FCF: The last time you fought at NAGA, you competed in a 4-man super-fight tourney. How did that go? RG: I fought one guy named Quincy Rice, then I fought a guy named John from Tai Kai [Jiu-Jitsu]. I think they were both a little bit heavier than me, but I managed to...thank God...I ended up choking them out, that's the good thing, I trained hard for that. But they were tough you know? They were definitely tough. My second match [against the Tai Kai fighter] was tough too, the guy came full blast man, he took me down twice...but the training I do makes me in such good shape, and the technique so, it helps me. FCF: Okay, thanks. Good luck in your fights. RG: Thanks. Rodrigo went on to win his inaugural mixed martial arts match in fast and impressive fashion. I got a hold of "The Highlander" again to get his thoughts on the match, and also to find out exactly how earned that unique nickname. FCF: How did it feel to fight a Mixed Martial Arts match as opposed to grappling-only? RG: Fine. It's a different adrenaline...it's a little bit different; you know? [laughs] Because you know if you make a mistake, you can get hit in the face. FCF: Were you nervous going in? RG: Yeah, I was a little bit nervous. But I think when I got in the ring...and the guy was staring at me and I thought to myself, "wait a minute, this is just like a fight in a bar." [laughs] And I got pissed...upset that the guy was staring at me. I think if the guy wasn't staring at me, I wouldn't even have been that angry, but the fact that he was staring at me...I was like, "this is just like a fight in the street...in a bar." FCF: So you were not nervous after that? RG: Yeah, yeah, it was weird...I wasn't nervous anymore when I got in the ring, you know? FCF: Can you describe the fight from there? RG: I was coming at him, and he came at me and he threw a jab and a cross. I slipped his jab and I did the double-leg takedown on him. I got cross-side and I moved to the middle [of the ring]; he had his arm across my neck, so I had his head and his arm. So then I turned around to see Renzo and Renzo's telling me something and [all I] understood was "arm.' So that's why you saw me pointing to the arm like, "you mean the arm?" Because I couldn't quite hear him. Then he said, "no, no, no...do the choke, jump over and do the choke." So he was describing everything for me, "put your elbow first, push with the hip..." everything he was saying at the same time I was doing, so it was cool. So I jumped over to the other side and it was tight already and I think he didn't want to tap, so he went to sleep. FCF: He went to sleep very quickly. RG: I know, yeah, it was weird. I thought I didn't have it, but I saw the tape, and you can see his legs going limp. FCF: Thirty-four seconds, quick fight. How did you feel afterwards? RG: Afterwards you feel like you're born again...you feel good, you know? FCF: What was your strategy going in? You've been training in a lot of stand-up stuff, were you planning on going in and banging with him? RG: I was thinking if he tried to prevent my takedown, I would try and punch him. But actually, he came at me, so I think he felt it would last longer, but the fact that he came at me, that's why it was quick. But, I don't know, anything can happen in this shit. Sometimes you can fight guys and they're not that tough, but they can give you a hard time, or you can fight a guy real tough and he can wind up [going out] real quick, it's very unpredictable...it could be the other way around, the guy could punch me and I'll get knocked out, just take a punch in the jaw...like that fight in the UFC with John Lewis. You can't say that he [Jens Pulver] was lucky; he [Lewis] just made a little mistake and boom, that was it. It doesn't mean he's a bad fighter because he lost that quick. He's tough, I've seen him fight other guys, I've seen him fight Johil...John Lewis is a tough motherfucker, he's a tough guy, but he lost that quick. That's the bad thing, when people see that, they think, "he sucks, he sucks." But I don't see it that way, you know? I see it as...right now it's unpredictable 'cause everybody is cross-training; everybody's training jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and Muay Thai/kickboxing...I think in the future, all of the fighters are gonna be just like that. I think if a fighter doesn't know wrestling, and just knows jiu-jitsu, he has a disadvantage. So I think a fighter has to know everything, he has to be at least decent in everything; you know? [You have to know] jiu-jitsu, wrestling and striking to be a really good fighter...a complete fighter. FCF: Now that you've entered the world of MMA, do you have any plans for future fights? RG: Yeah, well I have this [grappling] fight coming up against Din Thomas, I think he's from the WEF, and then the Abu Dhabi, and then I might jump in Pride. Renzo wants to put me in Pride. FCF: Has Pride made an offer? RG: Actually, to tell the truth, if Renzo makes a phone call, he can get me in there. But the reason why I did the [Vengeance At The] Vanderbilt, 'cause I wanted to get experience. I want to get my stand-up better, I just don't want to go in there like...I feel naked if I'm not good standing. So I want to get experience. FCF: So the next thing for you after Abu Dhabi is Pride? RG: Yeah, I think so. That's where the money is anyway. I need to make some money. I think I can make a lot of money in there; I think they [pay] good...especially for a Gracie; you know? So I gotta take advantage of that. RG: [Laughs] The Highlander thing was because back in Brazil, I went out with this really, really ugly girl; you know? [laughing] So, everybody started to say, "Man! How could you?" So I started saying, "Dude, I'm a Highlander...'There can be only one!'" [laughing harder] That's how it started...'cause the chick was so ugly, back then I didn't care. So when I was passing by with the ugly chick, I was even smiling at them. So afterwards, everybody was talking...after that I was known as "The Highlander," because there can be only one person who will go out with an ugly chick like this. Here's a message to all the guys out there reading this, you have to get ugly girls once in a while, 'cause if you don't get ugly girls, you don't go to heaven. You gotta do some...how you do you say it? Charity work...[laughing] you have to do some charity work so God can see it and you can get into heaven. |

From the event's promoter: On February 23rd, Super Brawl celebrates its 20th show with big rewards for its fans! Without a doubt, Extreme Sports Productions biggest event to date will take place Friday night, February 23rd as local superstar, Ray "Bradda" Cooper, will face his toughest opponent to date at the Blaisdell Arena. That opponent will be World Extreme Fighting's #1 middleweight, Paul Rodriquez. Ray Cooper has been called the most exciting fighter in the sport. All but one of his victories have come by way of knockout or submission...in the first round! "Bradda", who trains at the "Jesus is Lord Gym, is famous for his counter punching power. He is unbeaten at the Blaisdell Arena. "Pound for pound, nobody in the world hit's harder than Ray. He has legitimate one punch KO power." T.Jay Thompson, President, Extreme Sports Productions. Paul Rodriquez is coming off a 3rd round KO victory over AMC's highly touted Dennis Hallman. He is the number one contender in one of the top Mainland promotions, Hook n' Shoot. His professional fighting record is 8-3. Paul says, "I respect all of his accomplishments. He is a great athlete, but so am I. I will not give him a chance to breathe on fight night. I will just keep coming at him. It is going to be a long night for Ray 'Bradda' Cooper." Although this fight alone would seem to be worth the price of admission, Extreme Sports Productions has a lot more in store for us on this historic night. Look for local phenom, Baret "Da Finisher" Yoshida to make his return to a Hawaiian ring. Baret, famous for his recent battle with Royler Gracie in Abu Dhabi, lost his Hawaiian debut to Shooto World Champion Mamoru. Since that time he has gone undefeated, fighting all his fights overseas. Baret's opponent has not yet been announced but he is excited nonetheless. "The loss has motivated me. I have been training sometimes 10 hours a day. My game is coming more complete. I do not plan on losing again in my home town." Hawaii will also have the privilege of watching two of the world's best 150lb fighters. WEF World Champion, Din Thomas will square off against Ray Cooper's stable mate, Stephen "Bozo" Palling. Din is fresh off a victory over UFC 150lb World Champion, Jens Pulver. Din beat the previously undefeated Team Miletich fighter with a brutal reverse heel hook. Din is famous for his high-flying style. He will try cartwheel guard passes, flying arm-bars, rolling kneebars and many other high risk maneuvers. "I give the fans what they pay to see...a show!" "Bozo", the local favorite will come at Thomas with an arsenal of uppercuts and hooks looking for the knock out. Stephen is currently ranked 5th in Japan's Shooto organization. "But wait there more...!!!" As if this wasn't enough, former UH football standout, Falaniko Vitale will put his undefeated No Holds Barred record on the line against up and coming superstar, Charlie Anderson. Niko is known for his aggressive hard-hitting style and Anderson will match up with him well. WEF Promoter Jamie Levine said of Anderson "[He is a] tough S.O.B. A guy who has no quit in him. He is not afraid to take punishment if it means he can dish it out later in the fight. Anderson is one of the most exciting fighters in the ring; he has no down time when the bell rings!" Watch for fireworks when these two meet in the middle of the ring. As an added bonus, during intermission, Extreme Sports Productions will crown the first ever Hawaii's Hottest Showgirl from a bevy of Hawaii's finest! Plus 8 under-card bouts featuring Ronald "The Machine Gun" Juhn v Scott Henze, John Crisotomo v Scott Bills, Brennan Kamaka v Arti Brito, Bob Ostovich, Kai Kamaka, Anthony Torres and Abe Rodrigues.
