From the event's promoter Night of The Beast The Danger Zone Oct. 28, 2000 - Lynchburg VA This was the first time that professional mixed martial arts has been allowed in the state of VA. From the event's promoter "BATTLE OF THE BELTS"
We would like to comment on the strange coincidence of this show having an almost identical name as UCC's "BATTLE FOR THE BELTS." It has been a tradition since the inception of the USWF to have all of the champions defend their titles in the fall of each year in a show called "BATTLE OF THE BELTS." We hope it causes no confusion and we would like to wish continued success to the UCC.The Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation returns to Amarillo November 25th 2000, with "BATTLE OF THE BELTS." This will be the USWF's first show in the city's premier venue, the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum. The Civic Center is the home of Amarillo's professional hockey team, The Amarillo Rattlers. The venue also hosts the WWF, WCW, all of the major concerts and most other large events that come to town. It is a big step forward for the mixed martial arts in the North Texas Area. This will also be the USWF's first show under the state of Texas' new combative sports regulations. Shoot fighting is now an official sport sanctioned by the state. USWF XVIII promises to be one of the best USWF shows to date. There will be an eight-man tournament to fill the vacant USWF Middleweight Champion Title, and and all of the current USWF champions will defend their titles. The fight for the USWF World Heavyweight Championship could prove to be a battle as "The Iron Man" Travis Fulton comes down to Texas to take on Evan Tanner who has recently returned to fighting after a lay off of over a year. Both fighters bring a great deal of experience to the ring, but Travis is by far the more experienced of the two with over a hundred fights to his credit. Both are veterans of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, Pancrase, and Extreme Challenge. Fulton has also fought in the IFC, and RINGS. Both are known for their aggressive styles which should make for a very exciting fight. UFC and Extreme Fighting veteran, Paul Jones, defends the Light Heavyweight Championship against local favorite Junior Baeza. Jones brings much more experience to the ring, but a game Baeza can't be counted out. World Lightweight Champion, Brent Medley takes on the challenge of up and coming fighter Leonard Garcia. Their last fight was a 20 minute war with Medley earning the decision. If this fight is exciting as the last it will definitely be one worth seeing. The retirement of Ali Elias has left the USWF middleweight title vacant. Eight hungry fighters will battle it out in a tournament to see who gets to take home the title. We also welcome the official HOOTERS calendar girls who will be working the ring. What more could you ask for than a night full of great fights and beautiful women in bikinis. Fights began at 7:30 pm. Tickets can be purchase at the Civic Center box office, Randy'y Music Mart, or can be charged by phone at 806-378-3096 USWF HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT Evan Tanner (USA Stars) vs. Travis "The Ironman" Fulton USWF LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT Paul Jones vs. Junior Baeza USWF LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT Brent Medley vs. Leonard Garcia (Pittman's Academy) USWF MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE TOURNAMENT Bone Sayavongsa (Baylor University Jujitsu team) Troy Green Jeff Lindsay (USA Stars) Brandon Harbaugh Larry Bartholemew Eric Davilla (Scorpions Lair) Gabriel Garcia (Pittman's Academy) Jay Jack SINGLE FIGHTS Scott Leftler (USA Stars) vs. Richard Hess (Colorado Stars) John Campbell (USA Stars) vs. Chris Sisneros (Colorado Stars) |

November 3, 2000 8:00 - 10:00 PM By Michael Onzuka - Mike@onzuka.com Once again, the Ironheart Crown returns to Chicago and the legendary St. Andrews Arena to make a dent in the Midwest MMA circuit. Eric Moon comes back in his second year as promoter for the event and adds an important prefix to his name...Doctor. To my knowledge, this is the first MMA event that is being promoted by a doctor, which can help bring legitimacy to this struggling sport. Dr. Moon, as well as being a promoter, is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and veteran of many NHB fights as well. He brings his experience with sport tournaments, fighting in events, his medical background, and experience from last year to expand the 2001 edition of the Ironheart Crown to new proportions. Last year's Ironheart Crown saw relative unknown, Steve Berger, beat perennial powerhouse and UFC veteran Shoney Carter in the first round. Berger is now a hot item in the NHB circuit, thanks in part to his performance in the Ironheart Crown. Submissions, knockouts, and full-length fights graced the card last year; from the looks of this card, there should be more of the same. Solid veterans such as Henry Matamoros, Jim Theobold, and Mark Jacquith head up this year's card, which looks to continue the entertaining reputation that the Ironheart Crown has quickly brought upon itself. Along with these experienced fighters, four titles will be up for grabs, the Lightweight (up to 155 lbs), Middleweight (up to 175 lbs), Heavyweight (up to 200 lbs), and Open weight (over 200 lbs) titles. The weigh-in was held at the popular Aqua nightclub, south of downtown Chicago on Friday night, November 3, 2000. Henry Matamoros, who has fought in the IVC, HOOKnSHOOT, Extreme Challenge, and WEF brings a multitude of fighting experience with him to the Lightweight Title Fight. Bill Novak, a Navy Seal who has ranked first in fitness in his training division, has Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu experience and is looking to boost his reputation by beating the veteran Matamoros. Keith "the Giant Killer" Hackney's Virgil Strzelecki, the frequent-fighting Adrian Serrano, BJJ fighter Travis Jensen, and Shidokan stylist Erick Synder, round out a talent filled middleweight tournament. Virgil Strzelecki is a local favorite and Chicago Challenge Champion who owns victories in HOOKnSHOOT and Extreme Challenge. The second busiest man in NHB, Adrian Serrano, looks to mix it up with these other savvy competitors. Serrano is a very busy fighter with many fights in many events to his credit. Travis Jensen, a young wrestler and submission artist, entered this tournament on short notice looks to test his skills. Erick Snyder, who has reported that he has won in the Bangkok Brawl, Extreme Combat, North American Combat, and Pankration Gold Cup will be tough to beat. Snyder trains under Shootfighting instructor, Yasunori Matsumoto and at the U.S. Shidokan Academy. This year's Heavyweight tournament features Kestutis Arbocius, a Drago-type (Drago is a character in the Rocky IV movie) Russian fighter, who brings a mysterious feel to the weight class. Arbocius has a reputation of devastating stand-up skills and knock out power as shown as the 1998 World Shidokan and 1999 U.S. Shidokan Champion. Joining Arbocius is Roberto Ramirez, a Bangkok Brawl, Midwestern Jiu-Jitsu Champion, and JKD stylist who trains with Abu Dhabi competitor Joey Gilbert. Team HOOKnSHOOT and Tell City, Indiana's Scott Henze brings a record of nine wins and one loss and wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu background to the tournament. Henze is known for his Matt Hughes-like takedowns that put Chiropractors' kids through college. Jim Theobold is a Bob Schirmer Combat-Do stylist, who also brings an impressive record to the tournament to see where he stands among the best. Fans may remember Theobold as he KO'd Kyle Hensgen in only 34 seconds at last year's Ironheart Crown. Theobold looks to continue his knockouts this year. Hines, who, along with training with the "giant killer" Keith Hackney, has a gold medal in the Chan Challenge in Scotland faces Jesse Gudenschwagger in a single bout. Another Schirmer student, Rolando Higueros, looks to avenge his teammate Shoney Carter's loss in last year's Ironheart Crown as he takes on Cedric Stewart. The final single bout involves an Assou Hamdaoui (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt) student, Erik Bakely fighting Chris Albandia, who has fought in Extreme Challenge, Pankration Gold and Diamond Cups, and the Total Combat Challenge, among others.
The main event of the night features local favorite Vaughn "the Vaughnman" Palelei against Matt Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer is a student of local judo and submission instructor Leo Valdez. Palelei, who electrifies the room the moment he enters it, was the hit of the interview section of the weigh-ins. He can also be a stunt double for the Rock, from the WWF. Vaughn talks a good talk and has many titles to his credit. This New Zealand born fighter could be the next great heavyweight. He has a never-say-die attitude and the charisma that will draw fans in with every bit of exposure (or chance of exposure) he can get.The Ironheart Crown has a good combination of talent, youth, experience, and attitude to make it a major player in the Midwest fighting circuit. Chicago fans now have a certifiable quality MMA event here in their hometown. Be sure not to miss these great fights in an event that has grown by leaps and bounds in just one year. RUAS AND PEDERNEIRAS TOGETHER After years of war finally some of the biggest Brazilian Vale-Tudo fighters are putting professionalism ahead of rivalry and not just training together, but also sharing the same Academy. Now the Ruas Team, which has always trained in the Radar Academy, has moved their headquarters to Pederneiras dojo in the Flamengo district. "The rent at the Radar Academy dojo was really high, so we decided to accept Pederneiras' invitation" explained Roberto Leitão. Now, besides Jiu-Jitsu classes, Pederneiras' academy has Vale-Tudo, Muay Thai and also wrestling classes. Champions Ricardo Arona (Jiu-Jitsu) and Alexandre Pequeno (Luta-Livre) are following along the same lines. The current 93kg Abu Dhabi champion and the 64kg Shooto champion are teaching in the same dojo at the new World Fight Center academy, in Niteròi, Rio de Janeiro. The results are evidenced by the growing number of students at the academy. After all, everybody wants to have a champion as a teacher. MECA WORLD VALE TUDO III Rudimar Fedrigo, leader of the Chuteboxe team, has just confirmed the 3rd edition of Meca, the new Brazilian Vale-Tudo event that is giving the opportunity to showcase new great names in the NHB world. The event will take place in Ginàsio do Circulo Militar in Curitiba city, Paranà on November 12, 2000. As always, Rudimar chose rounded fighters which promises very action-packed fights for the event:
SUBMISSION IN CAMPINAS It's really amazing the way submission wrestling style events are growing in Brazil. Every month, somebody in some state of this continental country is making a new event. The 2nd Professional Audicon of Jiu-Jitsu without gi will take place in Campinas, São Paulo on November 26th. Marcelo Giudici, a brown belt under Ryan Gracie, and promoter of the event, will give around $4000 in prizes among the winners of each category. The biggest Jiu-Jitsu teams from São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have already confirmed that they will be there. BABALÙ AND SMITH IN UFC XXVIII Brazilian Renato Babalù has been announced as the opponent for fight Maurice Smith in the upcoming UFC that will take place on November 17th in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Initially, Babalù was invited to fight against Couture for the heavyweight belt but did not accept out of respect for his teammate Pedro Rizzo "It would not be fair. He has fighting for this belt for a long time, I'm just getting in the event right now" said Babalù. About the fight, the Ruas representative said, "The audience can expect a very good and technical match. Maurice is a very experienced and good fighter. In spite of that, I'll look for the KO from the start." |

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- The scenario isn't that unusual: Two undefeated fighters battling it out for a championship in a no-holds-barred event. What makes the main event of Extreme Challenge 38 special is that the standout fighters are women. Leah Hamilton of Omaha, Neb., and Jennifer Howe of Salt Lake City will both take perfect 3-0 records into the first-ever Extreme Challenge women's title fight. The 9-bout event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 at Harveys Casino Hotel in Council Bluffs. "I've only had a few women's bouts on my shows and without a doubt these two women have both dominated the competition," said promoter Monte Cox. "It seemed only right that they meet and that the fight be treated the same as if it were a men's championship bout." Hamilton, 5-foot-4 and 135 pounds, will be the hometown favorite as she lives only miles from Harveys Casino and has won there before. Howe, 5-4 and also 135, will be fighting again after a year-long layoff. Both fighters have excellent submission skills... Hamilton trains at the Steve Jenum school, while Howe trains at the Walt Bayless Academy. The biggest differences between the two women are that Hamilton wrestled on the boys team in high school and has better takedowns... Howe finished third in the National Golden Gloves boxing event for women and is a strong striker standing and on the ground. With the Ultimate Fighting Championship hinting that it may start a women's division... both girls hope to make a positive impression and move into position for a Pay-Per-View opportunity. Also on the card will be a pair of UFC veterans in Travis Fulton and Nate Schroeder. Fulton, the ironman of NHB from Cedar Falls, Iowa, takes an 80-20-5 record into his feature match against 12-0 Mike Radnov, who now resides in Dallas but is an Omaha native. Schroeder, from Rock Island, Ill., is a member of the Extreme Team and trains with UFC lightweight champion Pat Miletich. He will face Ron Rumpf in another feature bout. Other local fighters competing include: Seam Wilson, Jason Purcell, Vito Agosta, Justin James and Jason Brills of Omaha, and Joe Leggett of Council Bluffs. THE CARD: Sean Wilson, Omaha, Neb., vs. Jason Purcell, Omaha, Neb. Jimmy Hahn, Muscatine, Iowa, vs. Vito Agosta, Omaha, Neb. Ron Fields, Dayton, Ohio, vs. Ken Luther, Grand Island, Neb. Randy "The Natural" Couture opened the minds of a lot of fighters and introduced them to what Greco-Roman wrestling had to offer the NHB community. Using these skills to climb to the top of the UFC, he destroyed the Phenom, when people thought Belfort was invincible and avenged wrestlers everywhere by beating the grappler killer, Maurice Smith. Right at the pinnacle of his career, negotiations broke down with SEG and the undefeated UFC heavyweight champ was stripped of his title. Couture has just gained two big victories in the RINGS King of Kings tournament, advancing to the tournament finals. Couture's training partner, Dan Henderson, won the first King of Kings tournament last year. It is now time for The Natural to re-enter the octagon and face non other than "The Monster" Kevin Randleman for the UFC title on November 17th. This will pit a Greco Roman wrestler, in Couture, against the freestyle wrestler, in Randleman, arguably two of the UFC's best champions. This is an excerpt from an interview I did with Randy Couture. The full interview featuring Couture's thoughts on his two losses, possibly competing in Abu Dhabi, and why he left the rAw team will appear in the next issue of Full Contact Fighter.
FCF: A lot of people, myself included, are excited about your fight with Randleman. It will be Greco versus freestyle, UFC champ versus UFC champ. How do you think your Greco skills will match up with his skills in freestyle?RC: Well, I think we're both wrestlers, first and foremost. We both have similar backgrounds in college and we've obviously diverged. He hasn't had much Greco experience to my knowledge, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't know how to pummel and know some of those positions. I think that I would probably have an advantage in the clinch position. I'm confident that I can keep him off balance and either take him down or land good shots from the attached position. But you still have to get attached [laughs] and get into that close, clinched range and that will be interesting and the test. I have never fought another wrestler, it will be interesting to test myself against another wrestler, to try and maintain a good dominant position on top or in the standing position. He's a good athlete, explosive, and he is a very good wrestler. That makes it very interesting. FCF: Randleman is not a very large man, but has pretty much dominated his opponents. How do you plan to counteract his power and aggressiveness? RC: Well, he may not be very tall, but he is certainly large. FCF: He says that he dips down to about 210lbs because he trains so hard. RC: Well, that's smaller than what I have seen him compete before at, unless they fudged his weight. Last time I saw him he weighed around 230lbs. I don't know. He's a good athlete, very aggressive and explosive and I have to be prepared for that. I also have to be in good position and not get overly aggressive and extend myself. I need to make him work as hard as possible because the later rounds, I think, will be in my favor. My conditioning has always been a good tool. FCF: You just mentioned that the conditioning may be a factor, but can you share any weaknesses that you see in Randleman? RC: I think that he's explosive and athletic, but he's not a real technical fighter. I think that he relies heavily on his athletic ability and has not spent a lot of time on his submissions, so I'm not real worried about him submitting me from any position. And as I watch him box, he doesn't throw a lot of kicks. He's quick and powerful, but he's not real accurate or real dynamic with his striking. I don't know if those are outright weaknesses, but I think that those are some areas that I might have an advantage.
FCF: What weight are you planning on coming in at?RC: About 100 kilos, which is about 220lbs. FCF: How do you see the fight going? RC: It's hard to say, it's a fight. I don't generally make any predictions, it could go the distance or it could end early. There's no way of knowing. That's the nature of fighting. I'm prepared to go as long as I need to go and to fight as hard as I can. FCF: How do you feel about first facing Randleman, then Rizzo, and now Randleman again? RC: It didn't really matter to me because I was just anxious to compete. I'm pretty excited about getting back in there. It wasn't that big a deal who it [my opponent] was. I imagine that I will wind up fighting Rizzo at some future date, so one or the other, it didn't really matter to me, which it was, as long as someone stepped in there. [laughs] FCF: Did the change in opponents affect your training at all? RC: Not a whole lot. My strategy would pretty much be the same for both fighters. Stay in your areas of strength and operate in those areas. And that really doesn't change that much from fighter to fighter. Obviously there are other things that you have to watch out for. If you're dealing with Rizzo, he likes to throw some pretty heavy kicks and has a pretty good right hand. He's a little more skilled in the submission area, so you have to watch when you are rolling around with him. They are both real good fighters and have a lot of experience and are pretty composed. FCF: The last time you left the UFC because of negotiations broke off right? Why did you choose to come back to the UFC? RC: They actually called me and asked if I would be interested. I was a little leary about getting involved again. But decided that as long as they would allow me to compete in Abu Dhabi and the King of Kings RINGS tournament, I would be willing to fight. The UFC is still probably, the most prestigious event in the United States to fight for. And therefore it's good for me as a fighter to get back in there and compete.
FCF: Is there anyone besides Randleman in the UFC that you look forward to facing?RC: It doesn't really matter to me. I don't really have a particular opponent that I would like to face. I'm open to anyone that wants to get in there. Nobody in particular comes to mind. FCF: A lot of U.S. fight fans have not seen you fight since your last appearance in the UFC, what can we expect from Randy Couture's re-entrance into the UFC? RC: I think that I'm a lot better fighter than I was back then, even than in the Maurice Smith fight. I'm more well-rounded now. I've added more submission ability to my fighting style. I have learned a lot of new striking capabilities and learned how to take advantage of my wrestling background better than I did before. Hopefully that will show, I trained and prepared for this fight and I'm just going to go out and let it go. FCF: Thanks again and good luck. RC: Okay Chris, thanks. |

Today Kim joins us to discuss steroids in sports, the future of mixed martial arts, the future of football, and maybe even the future of sports in America. Also, Bryan Van Kley, editor of WIN (Wrestling International Newsmagazine), the leading amateur wrestling publication in America, joins us with our second annual college wrestling preview. Wednesday, November 15 -- Today we offer a preview of Friday's UFC XXVIII card, to be held at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. We are also joined by Miguel Iturrate of Fightworld.com who will preview Saturday's HOOKnSHOOT "Fusion" mixed martial arts card in Evansville, Indiana. Thursday, November 16 and Friday, November 17 -- The Ultimate Fighting Championship is finally coming Friday night to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and we will be webcasting there from the Trump Taj Mahal live on both Thursday and Friday to take you behind the scenes in preparation for UFC XXVIII. This historic card is the first UFC to be sanctioned by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. We expect to speak with many of the fighters, trainers, managers, NHB luminaries, and media people assembled here in Atlantic City for this groundbreaking event. |

by Michael Onzuka - Mike@Onzuka.com Xtreme Showdown, FutureBrawl's latest incarnation, is finally set to go after countless problems...it was a promoter's nightmare with fighters dropping out like flies. Local fighters Niko Vitale and John Chrisostomo had to drop out due to injuries, Vitale hurt his knee while training for the event and Chrisostomo got injured in a car accident. Aggressive wrestler Josh Hall returned home from wrestling in Japan with stitches in his head. I'm sure that all promoters go through this (maybe not as bad as this), especially a day or two before the big event. Thanks to the connections promoter T. Jay Thompson has, he still put together a quality card with many up-and-coming fighters as well as veterans who will be new to Hawaii fans. The theme is Team SuperBrawl vs. Team Extreme Challenge where T. Jay Thompson of SuperBrawl pits his fighters against Monte Cox's Extreme Challenge warriors. John Allessio, fresh after an appearance in the UFC will challenge another UFC and WEF veteran in Joe Doerkson. Both these fighters have comparable records and are sure to put on a great fight. Jay Martinez returns to Hawaii after a stint on Battle Dome, a American Gladiators spin off, where he cited that one of his biggest accomplishments was to win SuperBrawl. How's that for a plug on national TV? Maybe T. Jay will slip him a couple dollars for an additional advertisement. Martinez faces Pat Miletich's student Rick Gravesen, who, with a 19-10 record, has been in the ring quite a few times.
Allessio's Shark Tank teammate and probably the busiest fighter from the tank, Victor Hunsaker[Pictured], also returns to Hawaii to take on rising star Drew Irion. The rest of the card features local favorites such as Gary "Boy" Freitas, Abe Rodriguez, the ever entertaining Jay R. Palmer, and the hard hitting "Cabbage" Cabrera. It has seemed like forever since the last SuperBrawl and I know that T. Jay is probably already starting to plan the next installment once these battles are completed.

Larry Hazzard Gives a Powerful Pro-MMA Speech Tonight the UFC held its usual pre-fight meeting for the combatants, their seconds, managers and the press. This time, was slightly different than usual though...New Jersey State Athletic Control Board Chairman Larry Hazzard made a speech welcoming MMA, and the UFC in particular, to New Jersey.
Hazzard also warned the fighters and their crew that now that they are licensed by the State of New Jersey as professionals, that they should act the part; reminding them that the eyes of the sporting world are upon them. It was quite clear from his speech that Mr. Hazzard is pro-Mixed Martial Arts. "This is a very, very major venue as far as combative sports is concerned, especially professional boxing. MMA is a relatively new type of athletic competition which I 'PERSONALLY' endorse. [this statement was met with a rousing round of applause] Hazzard continued, "I endorse it mainly because I am very familiar with the martial arts, but this form of competition has not been accepted universally--or I should say nationally...and it certainly hasn't been accepted universally, and I am an advocate of it[MMA], and I am an ally; however I must take an opportunity to caution you and remind you. We are only interested in the highest levels of competition, therefore it's incumbent on all of you especially when you compete here in this state, to be in top-notch condition because we will not tolerate any second rate competition here...and it's good for the sport! So you should take it as a personal challenge to help to promote this sport, because we are in the infant stages [of MMA]...and the state of Nevada right now is considering giving you the opportunity to compete there, and much of that is dependant upon the report that they get from me here in New Jersey. Now, I want to remind you that our main goal and our mission is not for anyone to be getting hurt...it's to give you an opportunity to demonstrate and exhibit your skills...but our main goal is the health and safety of the combatants. That's why all of you know, that you had to go through a pretty extensive battery of medical examinations in order to participate here in this state." [The fighters had to spend almost the entire day traveling to and from the hospital, as well as undergoing everything from bloodwork to eye exams to CAT scans.] Hazzard went on to give a powerful motivating speech in favor of the sport--not the type of thing we are accustomed to from Athletic Commissioners in dealing with Mixed Martial Arts. The meeting went on with the usual speeches from MMAC President Jeff Blatnick, SEG Chief Bob Meyrowitz, John Perretti, a review of the rules by "Big" John McCarthy. Both Blatnick and McCarthy noted that in order for this show to be accepted by the NJ State Athletic Control Board, knees would not be allowed to be used as strikes on the ground (similar to the no kicking of a downed fighter rule).
In addition to the usual cast of characters in attendance (Mo Smith, Frank Shamrock, etc.), UFC judge "Judo" Gene LeBell was there, looking quite striking in a beautiful pink luau shirt as opposed to his usual pink judo gi. LeBell and fellow judges Tony Moulinex, and Oz Stunt Co-ordinator and "MMA Fanatic" Crosby were licensed by the NJ State Athletic Control Board.
Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture, returning to the Octagon after nearly 3 years, showed a great deal of respect for his formidable opponent, current UFC Heavyweight Champion Kevin Randleman. Randleman also showed a huge amount of respect for Couture, stating that this is the first fight he would not be able to predict how it would play out.
UFC Lightweight Champ Pat "Goober" Miletich [pictured with Matt "Gomer" Hughes] was also on hand to get licensed as Mark Hughes' and Jens Pulver's cornerman. As evidenced by this picture, neither Pat nor Matt will be getting any toothpaste endorsements any time soon. |

In an exciting night of fights in front of an almost capacity crowd, New Jersey witnessed its first UFC event live. In the first bout of the main card, "The Pulverizer" Jens Pulver shocked the crowd by knocking out seasoned NHB veteran John Lewis in the opening exchange of the fight, once again proving why they call him "The Pulverizer". UFC matchmaker John Perretti was impressed and commented right after the fight that it may be the fastest knockout in UFC history.
Mystery man Andrei Orlovskiy showed some impressive submission skills as he easily defeated Aaron Brink with an arm-bar in the first round.Another big match this evening pit Super-heavyweights Gan McGee and Josh Barnett against each other. McGee looked impressive in the first round by taking Barnett to the mat and landing some heavy strikes. Barnett bided his time and opened up in the second round finishing off the giant McGee with strikes that led to a referee stoppage. "The Natural" Randy Couture, returning to the Octagon after having been stripped of his heavyweight title a couple of years ago, took out Kevin Randleman in a very exciting final match of the night. Kevin was on top and controlling the fight in the first couple of rounds, but Randy came back, taking Randleman down and punishing him with strikes from above. Referee John McCarthy stepped in and stopped the match, and "The Natural" was once again crowned UFC Heavyweight Champion. Be sure to get the upcoming issue of FCF for more coverage and pictures, pictures, pictures...

UFC weigh-ins, normally held the day before the event, were held today due to New Jersey State mandates. Athletic Control Board Chairman Larry Hazzard said that this requirement is in effect to ensure that fighters come into the ring at the proper weight. This left a few fighters scrambling to make weight on the day of their fights. John Lewis, Chuck Liddell and Jeff Monson could be seen jogging in the hall outside of the UFC Boardroom in a last-minte effort to make weight. Tonight's UFC, being held in the Mark G. Etess Arena in the Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, is almost sold out. Here is the scheduled line-up for tonight's line-up: Preliminary Fights (Probably not televised) Ben Earwood (169) Vs. Chris Lytle (167) Mark Hughes (184) Vs. Alex Steibling (188) Main Card Jens Pulver (155) Vs. John Lewis (155) Andrei Orlovskiy (239) Vs. Aaron Brink (231) Josh Barnett (257) Vs. Gan McGee (296) Chuck Liddell Vs. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Romolo Barros is hosting his second event on the "Valley Isle." Hawaiian fans on the other islands have been envious of FutureBrawl, which is held on Oahu. The island of Hawaii, commonly called "the big island," also hosts a smaller MMA event on a regular basis, but until recently, Maui fans have been out of luck, except for those who flew to Oahu or the big island to attend one of those events. Barros has put together an awesome card of local stand-outs and is even flying in a UFC veteran. This will start off with three four-man tournaments, warming up the crowd for the headliners. Barros has even called upon fellow Brazilian, Marcello Tiger to return to action. Tiger has not fought in Hawaii since last year and is coming back from beating two opponents recently in Brazil. Local favorite, Niko Vitale is also on the card, along with Hawaii's version of the NHB Energizer bunny, Jay R. Palmer. The venue for this event is aptly named for this fight card. I will be flying to Maui to cover the event for Full Contact Fighter. Professional bouts: Falaniko Vitale (S.W.A.T.) vs. Duke Paa'aina (Big Island) J.R. Palmer (Freelance) vs. Jason McCormick (Brazilian Freestyle) Ira Daugherty (North Shore Jiu-Jitsu) vs. Augie Padaken (Tiger Academy) Main Event: Marcello Tiger (Tiger Academy) vs. Keith Mielke (UFC veteran) Plus: A four-man semi-pro tournament in three different weight classes. |
