Hoffman comes back strong, Horn makes his point MOLINE, Ill. -- Team Extreme rose to the occasion Saturday, notching two tournament champions and three single match victories at the RINGS USA Finals at the Mark of the Quad Cities arena. Bobby Hoffman and Jeremy Horn, who both competed in UFC 27 the week before, notched a pair of victories to claim tourney wins and the $10,000 first-place prizes. After running out of gas and losing a close decision to Maurice Smith in his UFC debut a week earlier, Hoffman again was faced with a difficult situation. Following a 10-minute battle with big 338-pound Eric Pele in the semifinals, the judges decided the bout needed to go to overtime, meaning Hoffman had to win the final five minutes to claim victory. This time, Hoffman dominated overtime, landing solid knees and winning the exchanges en route to winning a unanimous decision over the John Lewis trained fighter. Then, after a rest period, he came back and defeated Aaron Brink in the finals by tap from punches to capture the first RINGS USA heavyweight tourney title. "I wasn't sure if I could go on," Hoffman said. "I was still hurting some from the Smith fight and Pele really took a lot out of me. But I decided if I was still standing then I had enough left to go on... I couldn't lose again." Brink surprised Tom Sauer in the first round, winning by TKO after getting a yellow card for an illegal punch on the ground. Brink could have gotten another yellow card for an earlier illegal knee, but referee Bart Guyer said he missed the infraction. "I missed the first foul, then gave a warning on the second one," Guyer said. "Then, I gave him a yellow card on the next one. We know RINGS rules are different, so we try to give everybody a warning... but he went too far." RINGS rules prohibit punching the head or knees of any kind on the ground. The yellow card takes a point away from the fighter, but Brink didn't let the bout go to a decision, landing a couple solid blows that left Sauer on the mat where Guyer halted the action. "I normally don't complain, but that was three illegal blows," Sauer said. "The knee really hurt and I never recovered... I didn't even defend against it because it was illegal. I can see one mistake, but with three I think he should have been disqualified." There was no controversy in the 200-under tournament as Horn scored a pair of impressive submission victories. Horn, winner of four straight UFC bouts and a possible opponent for an upcoming UFC middleweight championship fight, used a knee bar to sideline Josh Hall of Shark Tank in the semifinals. Hall was fourth in the recent Olympic Trials for Greco Roman wrestling. Then, in the finals, Horn caught Australian star Chris Haseman with an arm bar only 2:36 into the match. Haseman, a RINGS veteran, had advanced to the finals with an arm bar submission over Yasuhito Namekawa of Japan in the semis. "It feels great to join Bobby as the first RINGS USA tournament champions," Horn said. "Haseman is a tough guy... I just kind of took my time and kept working for the arm until I got it." The energetic Horn is back in the ring this week when he faces former UFC champion Randy Couture in the first round of the RINGS King of Kings tourney in Tokyo. "I'm looking forward to facing Couture... he's one of the best heavyweights in the sport," Horn said. "After this, I'd like to get a shot at Tito for the UFC title... I think he's a great fighter, and I love to fight the best. I just hope SEG gives me the opportunity to show what I can do." In single bouts, Team Extreme members went 3-0, giving the team a perfect 7-0 mark in the event.

After IFC Battleground 2000 By Josh Gross After years trying to establish Mixed Martial Arts as a legitimate sport in the eyes of state athletic commissions, Paul Smith finally tasted the fruits of his labor as the IFC promoted the first sanctioned event in the United States. I spoke with Paul, the IFC promoter, the morning after the event. As I walked through his hotel room door he was on his cell phone trying to iron out a problem some of the fighters were having with their plane tickets. He never stops working and is a major reason the IFC was in Atlantic City fully sanctioned by the Athletic Control Board. FCF: Paul, give me your thoughts on the evening. Paul Smith: The fights that [actually] came off, I thought were some really good ones. I was disappointed with the briefness of the show. Two-hour shows are a pretty short show for the fans on hand in the arena. Our shows usually run three to three-and-a-half hours for the people there live. We had a lot of obstacles and hoops to jump through being this was the first time in New Jersey and putting on such a historic event. I guess you have to take a little salt in the wound and get through it. The next one here should be even better. FCF: Was there anything specific in working with the New Jersey State Control board for the first time that caused problems on the card? PS: Yeah, a week out they threw some curveballs at us. There were some things that they said they were going to take care of, or that we didn't have to do initially and then right before the show they sent out these packets saying we had to do things. Some of the things related to officials were given to us the day before the event for background checks and things like that. We put on a card where most of the undercard used a lot of local people, because we tried to help with the initial draw being a completely new region for the sport at this level. When you build a card and rely on a tournament format to come out of something like that, we ended up getting in a bind because five days out two guys got injured and one guy pulled out because he thought he wasn't ready. What ended up happening was we ended up using alternates for the live show and scrambled to find backups for them. The commission requirements put everything in a tail-spin in terms of getting everything done. I literally spent three days running fighters back and forth from the airport. FCF: Since this was the first time most of the fighters dealt with a major state commission, or, in New Jersey's case, a control board, how did they react to all of this? PS: Of course everyone thought it was a major pain in the rear because our fighters generally aren't used to this level of scrutiny before they're allowed to go in there and show their skills. Everyone bucked up the line and got through it. The end result was going to be a great thing and a historic event that we were going to try and pull off here. Some of the guys had a really good time hanging out. At one point, we had about 15 guys hanging around the lobby of the hospital in Melville. It was quite an entertaining place for several hours; the hospital staff really enjoyed us. Everyone tried to make light of what was a very stressful pre-fight event. FCF: Let's talk about post-fight. After the Control Board had seen the event live, what were their impressions? Did they say anything to you? PS: Yes, about halfway into the event Mr. Larry Hazzard came up to me and was really, really impressed. He was particularly happy with one of the referee's stoppages for a DQ because of head butts. The crowd was quite upset and the fighter's corner asked for one more chance but we really leaned towards the side of caution for this event. Mr. Hazzard really appreciated that. He thought it was a great call and was happy with our referees in the ring. Our matchmaking, although we had to scramble the past week, didn't have any lopsided fights. I'm pretty sure that the one thing that will change for the January show will be a knee delivered to the head of a downed fighter. They didn't like when Gan McGee kneed Brad Gabriel [pictured] from side-control against the fence. California didn't allow for Muay Thai, so they didn't think legally they could allow it for us, but New Jersey didn't stop that for this show. Mr. Hazzard was six feet away from Gan when he rained down those knees and opened a really nice cut on the face of Brad Gabriel and he said that we needed to talk about knees to the head on the ground before the next show. If that's a concession we need to give to continue to do sanctioned shows in New Jersey and to help move this sport forward, that's something that IFC and myself are willing to give into as we did in California. FCF: How did the fighters react to the drug testing done by the Control Board before their fights? PS: We weren't informed that they were going to do it. I wasn't surprised, I know in boxing that they show up and do it regularly. I don't know if they test for kickboxing because they're controlled under a different agency. All the fighters know that they can be tested. It's in our rules and in their contracts. From what I saw last night there was at least one commissioner for every single fighter. They followed the fighters everywhere, from the locker room to the cage, back to the locker room. They kept a very close scrutinizing eye on it and from what Mr. Hazzard told me he was very happy with it he had some good things to say when he talked with the governor this week. FCF: What's the future for the IFC in New Jersey? PS: We received permission from the Control Board Friday afternoon to announce our next date of January 19th. Tomorrow we will start the ball rolling and try to get everything together for the January show at the Tropicana. FCF: Now that you have gone through this process with the Control Board, do you feel the second time around it will go smoothly? PS: Much more smoothly. I'm also going to build a card double the size I need and get double the people cleared through everything they need to do and jump through every hoop they need to clear for licensing of the officials. FCF: Finally, on a scale of one to ten, how would you rank the overall show? PS: I don't know, I guess I'd call it a seven. I was really impressed with the championship fights. Vernon and Da Silva was great up until the very end. Marcos ran out of steam but he was giving Vernon all he could handle. It was kind of surprising when he ran out of gas. I don't know if it was his energy or Vernon kneeing him twice after they stood up the first time that took a toll on him. He was pretty out of it an hour and a half, two hours after the fight. But you know what? He recovered and made it out with us for the famous IFC post fight party. FCF: Thanks Paul. PS: You bet. |

From the event's promoter: STEVE BERGER (Is he the "Next Big Thing"?) After an incredible Match of the Year-style fight against Aaron Riley in HOOKnSHOOT, Steve Berger propelled into clearly one of the most improved and hottest fighters going under 175lbs. Thus far, Berger was one of the VERY few fighters to stand with Riley and answer back with heavy shots of his own. Although, Riley was the winner by close decision, Berger became a HUGE commodity overnight. Calling Berger the loser of this particular fight would be a travesty! Berger easily silenced the critics who predicted a KO in Riley's favor inside of two rounds. On October 6, 2000 in Belleville, IL, Berger had the chance to face a tough field of eight men in REALITY SUBMISSION FIGHTING's debut event and came out ready and scoring an armbar in less than 1:30 of the first round of his first fight. After defeating Shone Carter at last years IRONHEART CROWN, the naysayers said "Berger was lucky" or "he didn't really win the decision". Well, on October 6, Berger silenced nearly all the critics once again as he dominated Carter with vicious combinations and some of the hardest shots Berger has ever thrown. Berger got the tap with a rear-naked choke in just 2:41. Looking at a tape of Berger even from earlier this year and comparing it to now is like night and day. A fighter that used to be called "straight Brasilian Jiu Jitsu" is now a solid ground fighter with some of the heaviest hands in the business! Ask anyone Berger has fought in the last 4 months! Berger faces one of the toughest fighters in the world as he faces Jutaro Nakao, the man who choked Pat Miletich unconscious, on November 18, 2000 at HOOKnSHOOT "FUSION". Look for more info next week as the card is finalized. |

CARLSON GRACIE IN LUTA-LIVRE It's impossible for someone who doesn't live in Rio de Janeiro to understand what the rivalry between Jiu-Jitsu and Luta-livre was like during '80s and '90's. Until some years ago, it would be impossible to imagine a Gracie in a Luta-Livre championship. But time has passed and people's minds have changed. Nowadays, the situation between Jiu-Jitsu and Luta-Livre is much better. The biggest proof of that was the presence of Carlson Gracie at the Luta-Livre Open I. Carlson came with and one of his best black belts, Fernando Pinduka, who once fought Marco Ruas. "Hugo is my personal friend. He invited me to see the competition and I came to prove that the only place for rivalry is inside the ring. Hugo already invited me to bring my students to take part in his next competition like this (no gi), and I will come" said the Gracie, who was applauded by the whole audience when he was announced by Hugo Duarte. The competition happened last Sunday at the Guanabara Garden Club. "I'm really honored by Carlson's presence here. It is a big example to be followed by the new generation" said Luta-Livre Confederation President Hugo Duarte. Pinduka also gave his opinion "I lived in a time of war between Jiu-Jitsu and Luta-Livre. Now it's over. It's time to exchange skills among different styles", said Pinduka. ASSUÈRIO IN WEF? The respected Chute Boxe team, which has showed the world talents such as Vanderlei Silva in the middleweight and Jose Pelè Landy in the lightweight, now has a representative in the heavyweight category. Assuèrio Silva, a 108 kg. fighter who came from the poor Northeastern state of Cearà, earned himself the nickname "Executioner" for having won more than 16 Vale-Tudos in the Northeast of Brasil. The kickboxer who also trained Jiu-Jitsu (with a Pederneiras instructor in Cearà) greatly impressed Rudimar Fedrigo in the last Mecca (Assuèrio easily defeated opponent) and asked him to train with Chute Boxe team. After seeing him train with Vanderlei and Pelè, Rudimar invited him to stay. "The guy has really impressed me. I'm preparing him for the next WEF," said Fedrigo. WARRIORS WAR I Matt Hughes and Dave Menne are going to represent the United States of America in Warriors War I. The new 8-man NHB tournament will take place on February 8th in Kuwait and will pay $60,000 to the winner. The main fights of the event promise to be between Americans, Canadians and Brazilians. Brazil will be represented by Josè Pelè Landy and Jiu-Jitsu phenomenon Ricardo Libòrio (Libòrio will be making his debut in Vale-Tudo). Canada will also be well represented by amazing Carlos Newton made world-famous by his amazing submission techniques. For sure it will be one of the best events ever! |

From the event's promoter: IVAN DRAGO TO DEBUT IN CHICAGO'S IRONHEART CROWN CHICAGO, IL - Who is Kestutis Arbocus, and what business does he have competing in the Ironheart Crown against the likes of Jim Theobald, Roberto Ramirez, and Scott Henze? IHC promoter Eric Moon calls him "Drago," comparing him to the Russian juggernaut from the movie, Rocky IV. "Mike [Castellano] came to me and said he had some Russian guy for the heavyweight division. When I asked what the guy's name was, he couldn't tell me. He doesn't speak any English. No one knew his name, so I just started calling him Drago!" Having just recently arrived in the United States, this Russian powerhouse barely speaks a word of English, but in the ring, his hands get the message across loud and clear. Arbocius is not at all known on the mixed martial arts circuit, but he is a heavy name in the kickboxing world. With a record of 13-0, and 8 knockouts under his belt, Kestutis Arbocius is a threat to any man who who faces him in the ring. He is the 1998 World Shidokan Champion, and the 1999 U.S. Shidokan Champion. In a recent bout in Illinois, he added another head to his collection with an early KO victory over Manson Gibson, North American IKF Light Cruiserweight Champion. But how will this kickboxer fare in the Mixed Martial Arts arena? While this remains to be seen, Michael Castellano provides some insight. "He's been training with Keith [Hackney] and I for about six months," Castellano says, "He's still much better on his feet than he is on the ground, but he's got good balance, he's strong as an ox, and its tough to submit him. His division is going to be very exciting. He'll beat anyone standing up. It'll take a very powerful grappler to beat him." Did he say "very powerful grappler?" Eric Moon, promoter of the Ironheart Crown, has one waiting for him. Scott Henze, of HooknShoot fame, is a long-time wrestler who has put his talents to work for him in the world of submission. A relative newcomer himself, Henze does not hold any formal titles of his own. Nevertheless, his performance in collegiate toughman contests has earned him the title of "Ball State's Toughest Man." Through his participation in Indiana's HooknShoot events (with a record of 9-1), Henze has come to be known for his incredible, Matt Hughes-style, aerial takedowns. They may be a determining factor if he ends up facing Arbocius in the four-man tournament for the heavyweight title. Also competing in the division are Jim Theobald and Roberto Ramirez, two well-rounded Chicago fighters who are adept at all ranges of the game. "This division is so unpredictable," Moon comments. "They are all so talented, and their styles are so different. Its impossible to predict how this one will turn out. Anything could happen. The winner of this division isn't going to be the fighter who can hit the hardest, and it isn't going to be the fighter who has the best submission skills. At the end of the night, our heavyweight champ is going to be the fighter who has the ability to control the direction of the fight; the ability to take an opponent out of his element. I've never seen Arbocius or Henze in action, but I know for a fact that Theobald has this ability, and I believe that Ramirez does too. We'll just have to wait and see." The Ironheart Crown will be held on November 4, 2000 in St. Andrew's Arena located at 1658 W. Addison in Chicago. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, contact the promoter at (773)793-6555, or visit the event website at www.ironheartcrown.com. |

From the event's promoter: HOOKnSHOOT "FUSION" ADDS MORE SHOOTO SUPERFIGHTS! With the main focus being on the middleweight division (Yves Edwards, Aaron Riley, Steve Berger, Paul Rodriguez, Scott Bills, Jay Buck, Ricardo Nougiera, etc.) HOOKnSHOOT can also boast some of the best 138 lb. and 152 lb. fighters. This became evident when Jeremy Bolt and Travis Phippen (both in the 138 lbs. or less class) stole the show in September with a spectacular match including a great finish. The 152lbs and under class stacked with guys like Phil Johns (Champion), Pat Benson, Dennis Hallman, Mike Lee and others also deserves a looksee! Dokonjonosuke Mishima, fighting out of the Cobra-Kai gym in Japan with a 4-1-2 record, is currently ranked #7 in Shooto and is a strong and skilled competitor. Mishima defeated Justin Wisniewski in Japan in August to end Wisniewski's 12 match winning streak. Mishima will face Tony DeDolph. Who is Tony DeDolph you may ask? DeDolph is an experienced fighter out of the Henry Matamoros camp who's HnS debut saw him TKO Mike Lee (who has had tremendous success in WEF as well as across the U.S.). DeDolph also had a war with Phil Johns in Extreme Challenge that left people standing in awe. This has the makings of an incredible fight on paper and adds more power and prestige to the already exciting lineup of HOOKnSHOOT "FUSION". If you haven't made the roadtrip before....now is the time! You can email HOOKnSHOOT@aol.com for tickets. |

THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 16-20: MOTOWN MADNESS ALL WEEK!!! by Eddie Goldman "No Holds Barred" can be heard every Monday through Friday, 3 to 5 PM New York time (Eastern Time - U.S.), only on eYada.com (http://www.eyada.com). We'll be "Dancin' In the Streets" most of this week in Detroit with three live shows, focusing on Thursday's Fight Zone (http://thefightzone.com/) mixed martial arts card in Southgate, and Friday's Mike Tyson-Andrew Golota bash at The Palace of Auburn Hills. We know you "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," so whether you're "My Guy" or "My Girl," make sure to listen and call or e-mail in to say "I Second that Emotion," and watch the fights where the losers will surely admit "You Really Got A Hold on Me." Don't "Shop Around," it won't be "Just My Imagination," but these shows will make you sing "You're My Everything." And if you miss them, "Baby Love," well, we'll just have to ask, "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted?" Monday, October 16 -- Today it's one hour live and one hour archived, as we start our trek to Detroit. We will open up with Kipp Kollar, president of the North American Grappling Association, live in the studio, discussing this past weekend's Tai Kai Challenge grappling event. In the second hour, we replay our interview of Monday, October 2, when we spoke to Mike Chapman, founder of the International Wrestling Institute and Museum, about the defeat of Russian wrestling legend Alexander Kareline by American Rulon Gardner at the Olympics, and the state of international wrestling. Tuesday, October 17 -- Today we will be attending the Mike Tyson-Andrew Golota prefight press conference, so we will replay the show of Wednesday, October 4. We spoke with mixed martial artist Ian Freeman of the UK, who scored a victory at UFC XXVII, and who told us about the obstacles he had to overcome in order to achieve it. We also spoke with Scott Adams, who owns a victory over Ian in UFC, and joined us to talk about his fighting plans. Also, since October 4 was the first anniversary of "No Holds Barred," we offered some observations on what we hope has been the first of many, many years to come of speaking the truth on the Internet about the combat sports, and played an excerpt from the very first segment of our very first show. Wednesday, October 18 -- We are webcasting live today from the Gomez Academy in Southgate, Michigan, just outside Detroit, in preparation for Thursday's Fight Zone mixed martial arts show at the Crystal Gardens in Southgate. We will speak today with Dave Gomez, the owner of this martial arts academy, the Fight Zone promoter, a renowned instructor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and a confidant of Royce Gracie. We also expect to speak with several of the fighters on Thursday's card, including Scott Hawkins, Mauricio Zangano, Dave Knaggs, Jason Ireland, and others. We will also speak with Doug Fischer of Houseofboxing.com for a preview of Friday's Mike Tyson-Andrew Golota fight, a review of their prefight press conference, and a peek at Thursday's Houseofboxing.com chat with the dean of boxing writers, Michael Katz. Thursday, October 19 -- Tonight is the Fight Zone show in Southgate, Michigan, and we will be joined live at the Gomez Academy by two living legends of the mixed martial arts who are in town to witness this event, Royce Gracie and Mark Coleman. We will also continue to discuss developments concerning Friday's Mike Tyson-Andrew Golota fight. Friday, October 20 -- In our third show at the Gomez Academy in Southgate, Michigan, Doug Fischer of Houseofboxing.com joins us just hours before Mike Tyson and Andrew Golota are scheduled to duke it out at The Palace of Auburn Hills. We also will review last night's Fight Zone mixed martial arts show with promoter Dave Gomez and some of the participants. |

You may recall back in the March 2000 issue of FCF, we told you about an altercation that took place between Mark Hall and Ken Shamrock...not in the ring, but rather outside of it. The place was the Saboba Casino in California where King Of The Cage 4 was about to begin. Stories vary on why the fight started and who started it. Hall, getting the worst of the altercation, was going to sue Shamrock over the matter and gave a lengthy interview to FCF on the matter-as did Shamrock. Well, it seems that the two UFC veterans, along with their lawyers, were able to settle the matter the old fashion way...in the ring! Yes, the two will battle it out in Japan in Pride in the near future. No date has been set, but both men seem happy with how this one will end. More info in the upcoming issue of FCF. Here is a look back at the two sides of the story...

With growth comes changes... UCC 3: POSTPONED In the two months following the highly successful UCC 2, the UCC has encountered an enormous amount of growth. Included in this growth is the addition of several new members to the UCC team, as well as a proposed change of venue for UCC 3: BATTLE FOR THE BELTS®. Our fans can be assured that these changes are beneficial to the UCC and MMA. Unfortunately, the UCC has encountered unexpected last minute complications with the new venue. Taking these factors in consideration we feel that more time is needed to assure that UCC 3 lives up to what UCC fans have expected. Therefore we are announcing that UCC 3 will be postponed. A new date for this historic MMA show will be disclosed very soon. We can assure our fight fans that the full UCC fight card will remain intact and only the date will change for this spectacular night of MMA action. A new date will be disclosed very soon. NEW FATHERS September and October were marked by new conquests in some great Brazilian fighters lives. Hugo Duarte (Luta-Livre), Roberto Leitão (Ruas Vale-Tudo), Clayton Mangueira (Budokan) and Rodrigo Minotauro (Brazilian Top Team) all became fathers. Fortunately for their opponents, only Leitão had a boy. ZÈ MARIO TEACHING After a long time only teaching in Porto Alegre (southern part of Brazil), Zè Mario Sperry finally decided to come back to the land of his birth. Sperry has just open a new academy in Copacabana associated with black belt Marcelo Tetel. Last week, both started Jiu-Jitsu and submission (without gi) classes in the amazing Gold Fighters Academy in Copacabana (rua Francisco Sà 36). MECCA III CONFIRMED Rudimar has just confirmed the third edition of his Mecca event. It will take place on Ginàsio do Cìrculo Militar in Curitiba on November 12. Only 3 fights are confirmed so far: Assuèrio (Chuteboxe) vs. The Pedro (Luta-Livre - RJ) Andersom (Chuteboxe) vs. Morango (Gracie - RJ) Ninja (Chuteboxe) vs. Claudinho (Luta-Livre - RJ) ELECTIONS The black belts were not so lucky in the Brazilian elections for Councillor. In Curitiba, Paranà Rudimar Fedrigo, (Pelè and Vanderlei Silva's instructor), was voted sixth in his party, but only four were elected. In Rio de Janeiro, Andrè Pederneiras, who needed 8,000 votes to be elected, only got 4,000. Josè Moraes was voted 11th, being elected with 28,000 votes. |
From the event's promoter: to battle in Honolulu While promoters often seem to have trouble getting along, T.Jay Thompson of Future Brawl and Monte Cox of Extreme Challenge are exceptions to the rule. On Nov. 14, the two will co-promote the Xtreme Showdown at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. The event will pit up-and-coming stars from the two events against each other. "We've been friends for quite a few years now, and have gone to each others shows and shared secrets and ways to be successful," Thompson said. "We've talked about doing another show together for some time and basically, I made a phone call and worked everything out in a couple minutes." The main event of the 10-bout card will feature Niko Vitale of Team SWAT against Mark Hughes of Miletich Martial Arts. Both fighters have done well in the middleweight division and are looking to move up to bigger events, like the Ultimate Fighting Championship. "This show will feature at least 10 guys who have fared very well in their respective events and are looking for more exposure and a chance to step up to bigger shows," Cox said. "Unless you're a real diehard fan, you might not know some of the names... but you will be hearing the names very soon, we have some young, really talented guys in the show." Other featured bouts include John Allessio (Shark Tank) against Joe Doerksen (Team Extreme). Allessio fought Pat Miletich for the UFC lightweight title, while Doerksen's only losses are to UFC stars Matt Hughes and Eugene Jackson. Josh Hall (Shark Tank) will face Rick Gravesen (Miletich Martial Arts). Hall finished 4th in the Olympic Trials in Greco Roman wrestling, while Gravesen has almost 30 fights around the Midwest. Also... John Chrisostomo (GU Hawaii) will face Jason Black (Miletich Martial Arts) and Victor Hunsaker (Shark Tank) will battle Drew Irion (Miletich Martial Arts). "This show has a lot of interesting matchups," Thompson said. "We're going to keep a team score and at the end of the night, one promoter is going to owe the other promoter something big... you know, like politicians do for the World Series." The bet between promoters hasn't been made yet, but Cox said it will probably involve a tractor and a surf board. "You know, I really need a surf board... most people don't know it, but Iowa is among the top surfing states in the mainland," Cox said. "I admit we don't have the big waves that Hawaii has, but we have some big ponds." The show will start at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $25 in advance for general admission ($29 day of show) and $50 for ringside.

New Opponent For Couture It's official, due to a knee injury, Pedro Rizzo is out of the upcoming UFC set for November 17, at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. Rizzo last fought a month ago in UFC XXVII and looked impressive as he beat "The Beast" Dan Severn. His opponent was to be Randy Couture, also known as "The Natural" [nickname courtesy of FCF], in the upcoming bout. Couture [pictured at right] will be stepping back into the Octagon after a long absence from the UFC. You may recall Couture's last two UFC appearances, he beat Maurice Smith in Japan and Vitor Belfort in UFC XV, in an impressive manner. No opponent has been named to replace Pedro Rizzo [pictured at left], but matchmaker John Perretti is searching for the proper replacement. Perretti is also searching for a middleweight opponent for Chuck Liddell. Here is what Pedro Rizzo had to say when asked about his injury... "Yes, I have an injury to my knee, but it is not that serious. I'm doing physiotherapy at this time. The injury is hindering my training and it will prevent me from fighting in November. If they make this fight in December, it will be fine. I hope to fight in December or as soon as possible, and show again, the new Pedro Rizzo." |

From HOOKnSHOOT promoter Jeff Osborne: "I feel like this is the show...I got a lotta money wrapped up into this but it's going to be worth it...I can't wait", Bryan Madden said to me just last Thursday about his show on November 3, 2000. Just weeks ago, Bryan Madden wrote an article on a dear MMA friend passing that made you really think about losing someone who's not only a friend, but potentially a husband, wife, brother, sister or other family member. It's ironic that last night, that Bryan passed away at the age of 42 after being hospitalized with severe asthma. It was a reoccurring situation that Bryan had many times pulled out of in the past but this time, he didn't make it. Unfortunately, I can relate to this story as my wife (as some may know) has a serious form of asthma that has almost taken her life on several occasions. There is nothing more devastating to me than seeing her having an attack and thinking the worst. Leaving me and my three-year-old daughter alone is the most frightening thing I could ever think of. My prayers go out to Lee Ann. It's hard to put into words on what is going through my mind right now. Bryan had put on tremendous shows and would get little respect for his work. His SFC (Submission Fighting Championship) set the standard for those in Illinois to follow including a lucrative deal with Budweiser that even I, admittedly, was jealous of. Sellout after sellout after sellout, Bryan had some incredible shows and would uncover tremendous talent along the way (Jermaine Andre, Steve Berger and a host of others) and no one hardly gave him press. Unfortunately, I can't comment on his personal or private life but I do know Bryan worked extremely hard in getting his product and shows out there and his wife was always supportive and involved. He always treated me, my wife and friends incredibly. The sad part of this whole thing is that she is faced with a "show must go on" situation and a ton of responsibility that goes with it. We're asking the fighters to please email RSF93@aol.com or HOOKnSHOOT@aol.com before counting this show out. I'm 100% positive that Bryan would want the show to happen (he was so proud of the Berger vs. Yves Edwards match) but Lee Ann will need time to sort things out and see where things stand. At the present time, given Bryan's preexisting medical condition, we believe that Bryan may have became uninsurable. We may need to call for a little help from everyone if this is the case. He has given the sport and his friends so much, it's only fair that we give a little back. Meanwhile, we should wish the best for Bryan and his family. God bless. Jeff Osborne |

UFC is all set to rock the East Coast November 17th, at the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. Last minute injuries, pullouts and a host of other problems did not deter UFC matchmaker John Perretti, as he has put together a card that looks to be a winner. UFC Heavyweight Champion, Kevin Randleman will replace the injured Pedro Rizzo and face "The Natural" Randy Couture. Renato Babalu of Brazil will replace Ian Freeman of the UK and take on Maurice Smith. WOMEN, WOMEN, WOMEN... Women, the reason why we are all here... Women have been the fuel for many fights and even wars for many centuries, but women also are half of the reason we are all here. We all have different body types that we prefer, from the thin runway type, to the Pam Anderson [Yes! thank you God!] body types. Many men enjoy the bigger gals as well, whether it be a rounder, fuller figure or a muscular type, these women pique our interests-among other things. We want to know what you think about women fighting in NHB? Is it something you would enjoy watching, is it something you'd prefer not to see? Do you think it would help the sport grow? By no means is FCF judging whether women have a place in the sport, we feel that everyone, be they male or female has a given right to take part in any sport they would like. However, we would like to hear your views on women in NHB. Some of the commentary we receive will appear in the November 2000 issue of FCF |
New Jersey State Athletic Control Board Chairman Larry Hazzard By Josh Gross Larry Hazzard, the man who can make or break Mixed Martial Arts in New Jersey, made an impressive speech at the IFC fighter meeting 2 hours before the first professional Mixed Martial Arts event was to be held in New Jersey. The speech indicated that Mr. Hazzard had done his homework on the sport, and yes, he perceives Mixed Martial Arts as a sport, the "ultimate sport" as a matter of fact. I spoke with Mr. Hazzard both before and after the IFC Battleground 2000 show. He shared his thoughts on the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, it's place in New Jersey and his thoughts after it was all said and done. PRE-FIGHT: FCF: Mr. Hazzard, this is a historic event in New Jersey and a historic event for Mixed Martial Arts. Why did you grant the IFC the opportunity to compete in New Jersey? Larry Hazzard: Well, first off I met with representatives of the IFC. They gave me tapes of their events. They gave me copies of their rules and regulations. I know some of the history of the IFC. Having a background in the martial arts, I understand what they're all about. I think that this form of competition got a bad rap early on when it was being billed as "no holds barred." You know, perceptions are very real. The perception at that time was it was street fighting for street fighting sake. I don't think the public appreciates that kind of competition. Once they went back and really refined what the sport was really about, I think it has now reached greater levels of acceptance-not only in New Jersey, but also in other states. I think this is a very crucial step for them because New Jersey has the status that it does in the combative field. If they make good here I think this will give them a great opportunity to go other places. I simply think that people have the right to expression. The martial arts is a very formidable form of competition and this is nothing more than the evolutionary stage of karate as it evolves into a more sophisticated level of competition. I think, as a public servant, we have an obligation to give the people what they want as long it fits within the framework of health, safety and welfare being uppermost in our minds. Here in New Jersey, we take great pride in putting the competitors first. The IFC has demonstrated to us that they also concur with our mission. They have met all the standards as they pertain to health and safety. All the fighters have gone and taken all the medical testing. They certainly satisfactorily met the standards of medical testing: CAT scans, EKG, HIV tests, blood tests, so they've done that. This is America that we live in, and this particular form of expression has a following. That, following along with the competitors should not be denied that ability to express just like boxers, wrestlers, and any other form of combative expression. They have a right to do that, and as long as they meet the standards of health and safety they should be given that opportunity. FCF: How closely did you follow the proceedings in California? How much of an impact did the California State Athletic Commission passing Mixed Martial Arts have on you here? LH: I conferred with California sort of as an afterthought, but I don't think I need other states to tell me what's right. I think the standard has to be met in terms of health, safety, welfare, rules, regulations and professionalism, then you make your judgment off of that. Certainly I reached out to California to get a viewpoint, I reached out to Mississippi to get a viewpoint, but the basic concept of fairness and allowing individuals their right to expression I think is something they have a right to do. That was the basic scheme of thinking that went into the decision making process. FCF: Is this show tonight a litmus test for the IFC and the sport of Mixed Martial Arts in New Jersey? LH: Well, I think it's a litmus test not just for New Jersey, it's a litmus test for the sport. Each time out, regardless of where you go, whether it is in Canada, California, Mississippi, Florida or Nevada…wherever the sport goes, it's a litmus test, especially during these times. These are the formative years of the sport. Like anything else, until the sport matures, each time out is a test and everyone has to be on their P's and Q's and everyone has to be cognizant of putting their best foot forward each time out because no matter where they go, it's a test. FCF: If that happens, can you foresee a future where Mixed Martial Arts competitions carry purses comparable to boxing? LH: I can envision it because the martial arts has a tremendous following anyways. As I said, this is nothing more than an evolutionary phase of the martial arts. It takes in all of the various disciplines of the martial arts into one package. Now, the test will be how much the public buys into it. That's the bottom line. FCF: Have any people associated with boxing expressed any concerns to you about having Mixed Martial Arts come into the state of New Jersey? LH: No, I mean there's no reason to. Boxing has stood alone for hundreds of years among some of the greatest professional sports of any time. So it's not like boxing is competing against this, no. Each professional sport competes against itself because the general populous picks the sports it likes the best. I don't think they do it in how one compares to the other. There is an inclination towards one particular form of competition and that's the way they go. Each sport develops their own following. I think Mixed Martial Arts over time has developed its own following. Most of the people here probably have already decided they like this form of competition so they become part of the following. Many of these people probably like boxing; some may not like boxing as much, some may not like this [MMA] as much. This is nothing more than another part of the variety and selection that people have when they want to be entertained. POST-FIGHT: FCF: Mr. Hazzard, tell me your thoughts on the show. LH: I thought the show was exciting. The crowd was really into it. It appeared to be safe enough. We'll work on a couple of things. The only thing I had a problem with, if I was to offer some constructive criticism, and something I think they'd take a look at, is guys getting kneed in the head while on the ground. But other than that, it seems as safe, if not safer than boxing. FCF: How many events have you seen, either in person or on tape? LH: I've seen about 10 to 12 on tape. This is the first show I've seen in person. FCF: How did it compare watching the event live rather than on tape? LH: Well, it's always a little more intense when you see it in person. Overall, I think it's something the people enjoy and I think it's something that can really grow. I don't have any problems with it. FCF: Great, thanks for your time. LH: You're welcome. |
