Dan "The Beast" Severn press release: Labor Day weekend pro wrestling tour in New Mexico, 4 cities and 4 shows. The weekend started out in Albuquerque, then Gallup, Santa Fe, and Red Rock. The fans had a chance to see animal from the Legion of Doom, Mr. Perfect Curt Henning, Thee Bush Wackers, Tantanka, Te Navajo Warrior and Michigan's very own Dan The Beast Severn settle their differences in the squared circle of professional wrestling. As the tour was just getting ready to kick off, a new development was taking place. One of the main event heavyweight fighters for the Sept. 22nd Ultimate Fighting Championships was knocked out in a fight a week ago. The UFC was in need of a replacement, and Becky Levi Severn's business partner contacted SEG. It has been three years since Severn has stepped into the Octagon. Dan has stepped up to the plate and accepted the fight. Contracts were faxed prior to Severn's departure for New Mexico, and his schedule is already being changed to allow him maximum time to prepare for the top heavyweight contender Pedro Rizzo. The Internet is buzzing with many armchair quarterbacks speculating on this match, but the main issue is the age of The Beast. At 42 years of age does Dan Severn still have what it takes? Severn is a legend in the NHB community, becoming the only Triple Crown UFC winner when it was very raw in format. The rules have changed somewhat and so has The Beast. Severn earned the nickname The Beast from his aggressive style and wild-eyed crazed looks as he tore through the competition. So while the Honky Tonk Man strummed his guitar on tour, Dan Severn was going for a run. While Mr. Perfect Kurt Henning was working on the perfect tan, Dan was lifting weights. While, The Bush Wackers were performing their forearm strut, Dan was shadow boxing. Amateur wrestler, pro wrestler, and full contact fighter...Dan has done it all. The unanswered question will be answered soon enough. Does he have what it takes on Sept. 22nd ? Has his time come and gone? Will The Beast appear, or will it be just Dan Severn? The money for the matched has been agreed upon. It is all the little things that need to be worked out now. This will happen in between workouts, and commitments he has to honor. You can stay up to date with new developments, contract disputes, training updates, and the buzz on the net go to www.the-beast.com Dan Severn-Becky Levi The Danger Zone Inc. www.the-dangerzone.com |

NHB Legend Chris Dolman, RINGS Holland fighter: Valentijn Overeem by Chris Onzuka Chris@Onzuka.com Holland has produced some of the best kickboxers in the world. Led by Rob Kaman, many other Dutch fighters have met with success in the kickboxing world. Ernesto Hoost and Peter Aerts are some of the top kickboxers in the world, proving it by claiming numerous K-1 Grand Prix Championships. And NHB is no different. Remco Pardoel has met with some success, Bas Rutten has captured two of the most prestigious titles in NHB. He was the King of Pancrase and UFC Heavyweight Champion. But not many people know that Chris Dolman led the surge of tough as nails Holland fighters into NHB. He fought in beginnings of RINGS, at a time when there was not much publicity. Now, one of Chris Dolman's students is an up and coming fighter. He is a converted kickboxer who has added grappling to his repertoire. What do you expect from a fighter coming out of Holland? His name is Valentijn Overeem (pronounced Valentine) and he is a specimen of a man. He competed with mixed results in RINGS USA "B-Bracket" Rising Stars tournament, losing to Tom Sauer in the finals. I called him a couple days after the tournament, interrupting his short vacation in Hawaii on July 24, 2000. FCF: Let's start off with your martial arts background? Valentijn Overeem: I started practicing kickboxing first, when I was about 15. I had a couple of matches in kickboxing, then a friend of mine took me to Chris Dolman's gym. I was about 18, I think. And then I started wrestling. FCF: Was it kickboxing or Thai boxing? VO: It was Thai boxing. I did about 8 matches. FCF: How did you get into fighting? VO: I was only practicing kickboxing and was only familiar with their rules. I didn't understand how effective grappling was and how easy it was for guys to take me down and make me submit. So, I got curious and that's where my interest started because I wanted to be an all-around fighter. That's when I found out that I wasn't good enough, that kickboxing for me wasn't good enough. FCF: How many NHB type matches have you had? VO: I think about 26 matches. FCF: What is your current record? VO: Including kickboxing, it is about 34 or 35 [total fights]. And it would be about 6 or 7 losses, the rest are wins. FCF: Which events did you fight in? VO: I've done two vale tudo matches. I included those as well because I won both of them. I had 8 kickboxing matches, I only lost one of those. And the free-fighting, of course. FCF: Where were those vale tudo matches? VO: They were in England. It was a European title fight. I am the European Champion. FCF: How long have you been fighting? VO: I started competition when I was about 17, that was with the kickboxing. I started competing in free-fighting [MMA], when I was about 18. FCF: How old are you now? VO: I'm 23. FCF: So you have been fighting for 5 years now. VO: Well, I had an injury and I took off about 8 months to recover from it. In a match, my opponent covered himself with oil and when we started I wanted to throw him. But we fell on my shoulder because he was very slippery, so I couldn't turn him over all the way. We fell on my shoulder and popped out my shoulder. I had a double operation for that. FCF: How did you get involved in RINGS? VO: My trainer, Chris Dolman, and I started grappling. He had a gym in Holland. He has 40 international titles in power lifting, wrestling, and judo. That's the person who started my career in RINGS. FCF: How long have you been fighting in RINGS? VO: Since I was 18. FCF: So, right after you started fighting? VO: No, I started fighting for Chris Dolman in Holland first. I had about 5 or 6 fights and I won all of them because my kickboxing was quite good. That would allow me to win matches because of that and because I could submit a little better than the others in Holland. But when I went to Japan, I had to start all over again because I came up too short with my grappling. It was good enough for Holland, but when I came to Japan, those guys were much better. I had to do a lot more submission training. FCF: Did you supplement your training with anyone else, or did you just stick with Chris Dolman? VO: I supplemented my training. I still do. FCF: Who are some of the people that you have or are currently training with? VO: One of the students of Remco Pardoel has his own gym now. His name is Martin Dejong. One of the guys who teaches at Chris Dolman's gym is Dennis Raven. He was one of the biggest judoka in Holland. I train kickboxing with Johan Vost in Amsterdam. That's where Ernesto Hoost [K-1 Champion] trains. FCF: Now, let's talk about the RINGS USA event. Tell us about your first fight against Tali Kuliha'apai? VO: Well, Tali was a boxer, so I didn't want to take a risk and do some stand-up fighting with him, even though my kicking and striking is quite good. I thought that he was a heavy puncher because he had a heavy upper body. I thought that I would just go to the ground with him and try some submission with him. It worked out well. He's a very strong guy, but I stopped his ground fighting by holding him. I saw that he wasn't comfortable with submissions, so that's when I saw a chance to submit him. FCF: At one point in the fight, you stopped. It looked as though Tali hurt his shoulder. What happened? VO: I got him in an arm lock and we turned around a bit. And I thought that I heard him scream, so I thought that I popped out his arm. He wanted to stop anyway. That's when I let go of his arm and I stopped. Then I looked at the referee, but the referee didn't hear anything, so I continued. I was pretty sure he wanted to stop though. FCF: Let's talk about your second match with Tom Sauer. Did you see Sauer's first match? VO: Yeah. FCF: What was your strategy going into that match? VO: Well the first match I did grappling, so the second match I wanted to change 180 degrees and do stand-up fighting. If we did some grappling, that would be alright of course, but I just wanted to strike. And because Tom throws right crosses, he doesn't throw straight punches, I thought that if I fought him down the middle, I could fight him quite well. So I started kneeing. After the first knee, which I hit him right on with the knee, he lost his balance and stepped out of the ring. That's why the match was stopped the first time, then we started in the middle of the ring. After that, I wanted to go to the ground, but the referee intervened, so it wasn't possible. So, I thought that I would throw another knee because the first one landed pretty hard, so I thought that the second one would land. But he caught me first with the punch. FCF: Did you fight Sauer previously? VO: No, no, no, no. We are like friends. I have seen him before in Russia and we got along quite well. We have a lot of fun together, but we both look at the fights like it's just a profession, you know? In the ring it's business, but out of the ring, we're friends. He's a good sportsman. We had a lot of fun afterwards. FCF: How do you like RINGS rules? VO: Well, in the last match, if I had a standing 8-count, it would have been good. It would have allowed me to continue the match because it was a knock down, but I was not knocked out. I think it would have been good to restart the match, but this time it was to my disadvantage. But many times, it has been to my advantage. So, if that's the ruling, I feel very comfortable. FCF: What do you believe is the key to being successful in RINGS? VO: I can't say that I'm one of the most successful fighters in RINGS, but I think it is very important to be well-rounded. That's a big advantage because with all the information going around about fighters, if you're not a good grappler, or not good at stand-up fighting, your opponent will be able to find out and be able to train for it. All around that's about it. FCF: Do you like to fight under NHB rules too? VO: Yeah, I like those rules. But I think it requires less skill though, because if you have a heavy puncher, you will have to be able to grapple real good because he can throw a bunch of punches and knock the guy out. But the RINGS rules you have to be more skilled because you are not allowed to punch in the face when you are on the ground. So you will have to make him tap out. But beside that I like it also. I'm comfortable with those rules as well. But I think that RINGS is a very good experience also. FCF: For those that are not familiar with the number of tough fighters coming out of Holland. Tell us what it is like training in Holland? VO: I think it is an advantage that we have so many good kickboxers in Holland because that is where you can get a lot of stand-up experience. But then again, the grappling is less than it is other places in the world. You look at America for instance, the guys start wrestling in college, so the level of wrestling is much higher there, and in Russia too. And of course, you have the Brazilian guys, who fight well on the ground as well. The grappling is the hard part, but there are some guys who train with the Brazilians and they know the Brazilian style quite well. You really have to find the places where you can grapple with some good guys. It's not easy to learn submission wrestling in Holland. But I think that every country is evolving quite fast. If I look at America, the guys are evolving quite fast. And I think the Russians are getting better. You can see that the fights are getting to a higher level because the fighters are more complete and skilled. FCF: You have fought in a lot of other countries. Which country's fighters do you think produce the toughest fighters? VO: I think that it depends on the fight. If you have a grappling type fight, the Russians are quite strong. Then again, the Japanese guys are skilled and the Brazilians are skilled as well. When you're standing up, I think it is pretty hard in my country because we've got a lot of good strikers in Holland. But it depends on what type of fight it is. I've had the most experience in Holland and Japan, so the other places I really can't say too much. FCF: From your experience, how does training in other countries differ than training that you've done in Holland? VO: When you train in Holland, it is more real deal. If I look at the Japanese, they train with less strength, but more technique. They put in more hours because the training is less hard. In Holland, we train 2-2 ˝ hours, dividing it into two times. And it is a lot of strikes, it's grappling and a lot of hard kickboxing. In Japan, it is relaxed, more hours. That's the difference. I've never trained in Russia, so I don't know how they train. FCF: Do you have any fights coming up? VO: Yeah, I have to fight another 3 times in Japan this year. In January, I fight in Holland at a very big tournament. I may do something in between. I have to look around and see what the schedule looks like because I won the first one and lost the second one [in this past RINGS "Rising Stars" tournament], so I'm not in the finals tournament in September. So I have to look for what other opportunities are available for me now. And of course, the King of Kings tournament. FCF: There is another RINGS fighter by the name of Alistair Overeem. Is that your brother? VO: Yes, he's my brother. FCF: Did he start fighting at the same time you did? VO: He was still busy in school and he kind of just rolled into to it. I took him with me a couple of times. He started liking it more and built up a big interest for it and is a very motivated guy. I train with him all the time. FCF: How much younger is he than you? VO: About 3 ˝ years. He just became 20. He's learning fast and he's eager to learn and gain all the skills. FCF: Is there anything else you would like to add? VO: Well, this was my first time in Hawaii. I would like to thank all the people in Hawaii, they are very supportive. I liked the crowd very much. I think they are very friendly. They like fights very much and they support the guys that are fighting. They applaud when there are good techniques that are being shown or the good strikes that landed. And there is a lot of sportsmanship in America and Hawaii, which is nice. I hope that I can come here more often. FCF: Are you enjoying yourself here? VO: I'm having a lot of fun here. That's why I want to come back fast! FCF: We look forward to it. Thank you. VO: Yes, surely. |

From the event's promoter: IFC WORLD TOUR WORLD SUPERHEAVYHEAVYWEIGHT TITLE ON THE LINE IN BATTLE OF THE UNDEFEATEDS Classic matchup pits a grappler against a striker! Two huge experienced warriors collide in the center of the 24 foot steel cage on September 30th at IFC BATTLEGROUND 2000 when Canada's "Bad" Brad Gabriel meets "Giant" Gan McGee for the World Super Heavyweight Championship. Both men are undefeated in extreme mixed martial arts fighting where just about anything goes. These two goliaths will try to punch, kick, choke, and throw each other into submission or unconsciousness. Gan, the current World Champion outweighs the smaller Gabriel by nearly 60 pounds. This is one of those battles that will help decide the age old question about which fighting discipline is best - the punching knockout artist or the wrestler. McGee is a world class wrestler while the heavy handed Gabriel has beaten the stuffing out of just about everything that's crossed his path. Gan McGee is known as "The Giant," and for good reason. He stands 6'10" and weighs 305 lbs. But it is not just McGee's size that has propelled him to world championship fame, it is his incredible quickness and athletic ability. McGee is a former NCAA Division I wrestler who won the California State Wrestling Championships in 1999. He has put that wrestling experience to good use in Mixed Martial Arts by taking down every opponent he has faced, and forcing them to submit to his massive "ground and pound" attack. McGee looks to extend his winning streak when he puts his title on the line against Brad Gabriel, a Tae Kwon Do and Kickboxing expert who is known for his devastating knock out power. "I know that Gabriel is good at stand up, and is a tough fighter," said McGee. "But I am training like I always do - hard." A member of the Mohawk Nation, Brad Gabriel is an international Tae Kwon Do competitor who has stepped out of the ranks of that sport and into the spotlight in Mixed Martial Arts. Gabriel, who represented Canada in Tae Kwon Do at the Goodwill games in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1994, also racked up an impressive record in boxing and kickboxing before he got his first opportunity in Mixed Martial Arts. "Mixed Martial Arts was an opportunity that was presented to me, I liked the sport, I am a warrior, so I went for it," said Gabriel. "Went for it," may be an understatement. At the International Fighting Championship ("IFC") show last January, Gabriel showed the crowd an incredible display of punching power in beating Mixed Martial Arts Veteran and pro boxer and champion kickboxer Kevin Rozier by devastating knock out in the first round. Gabriel, who is 6 feet, 245 lbs., will need every bit of that power as he takes on the 6' 10", 305 lbs., Gan McGee for the IFC United Super Heavyweight World championship. "I know that Gan is really big, but this is the biggest fight of my life and I've hit big guys before," said Gabriel. We'll find whether it's the striker or the grappler on Saturday, September 30th at IFC BATTLEGROUND 2000 at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City. Tickets are on sale at all Ticketmaster locations or by calling 1-800-736-1420. It's the IFC, it's in Atlantic City and it's real! For further event information please see IFC-USA. com or contact: D. Official IFC / Vladdy-Raw Statement: Matyushenko withdraws amid controversy. Saying that as far as they're concerned Vladimir Matyushenko has nothing to prove by fighting Vernon White a third time, the RAW team has withdrawn Matyushenko from a scheduled opportunity in IFC BATTLEGROUND 2000 in Atlantic City to regain the IFC Heavyweight title that he lost to White in October of 1999 in Montreal. Rico Chiapparelli stated that as far as RAW was concerned they had already beaten White twice and didn't need the third fight. Matyushenko had beaten White in an eight man IFC tournament early in both of their MMA careers but then lost a split decision to White in Montreal. This is the second fight that Chiapparelli says was actually a victory for Matyushenko. "What can I say," says IFC Commissioner Paul Smith, "we had a deal. We even gave Vlady the tune-up fight that RAW asked for in March. Now they've apparently decided that they've won a fight that the judges say they lost. That and Vlady has some big money opportunities that might disappear if he lost again to Vernon. We're sorry to see this happen. We thought that we have always had good relations with the RAW team, but apparently they've decided that Vlady deserves more than we can afford. Perhaps it's for the better. Rico says it wouldn't take Vlady five minutes to dispose of Vernon this time. If that's the case, why not take an "easy" fight? Anyway we wish Vlady and the RAW team good luck. Vlady was a good champion while he lasted and certainly has the right to earn as much as he can." White will now defend his title against a Brazilian contender, which will be announced when agreement has been reached, as is IFC policy. |

FCF Exclusive: WITHDRAWS FROM UFC 27 September 20, 2000, New York City - Due to a change in Tito's management, UFC middleweight champion Tito Ortiz and SEG Sports were not able to reach an agreement for him to compete in UFC 27, set for September 22 in New Orleans, LA. However, the management company, Dana White Enterprises, and SEG Sports are happy to announce a new long-term contract between Tito Ortiz and SEG Sports that will include Tito as a commentator at both the event in New Orleans and the November 17th event in Atlantic City, NJ. Tito will defend his middleweight championship in Tokyo, Japan on December 16th. Statement from Dana White, President, Dana White Enterprises, Sports Management Company: "On behalf of Tito Ortiz, Dana White Enterprises would like to apologize to his fans, who expected Tito to participate in the September 22nd event. Putting together a long-term contract that both parties support can be difficult. We are excited about the future of the UFC and their efforts to enhance the sport of mixed martial arts. Finally, we would like to thank SEG Sports for their professionalism and determination to finalize a long-term agreement for their middleweight champion, Tito Ortiz." Statement from Bob Meyrowitz, CEO of SEG Sports: "Tito Ortiz is the kind of champion the UFC has always prided itself on: a great athlete, a terrific person and somebody with real star quality. We are very proud to continue our relationship with Tito and to welcome Dana White into the mixed martial arts family." |
From the event's promoter: IFC WORLD TOUR WHITE TO MEET BRAZILIAN CHAMPION FOR WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CROWN Shamrock vs BJJ style matchup IFC World Heavyweight Champion, Vernon White, will face 3 time Brazilian National JiuJitsu Champion Marcos DaSilva in the cage on September 30th. Vernon was originally scheduled to meet former IFC Champion Vladimir Matyushenko who withdrew from the match. DaSilva who just came off a victory at the prestigious Rickson Gracie's Open JiuJitsu Championships, leaped at the opportunity. Both fighters have excellent ground skills, which should make this fight a real strategic battle. The style differences between the two are accented by their world renowned cornermen. In the Champions corner will be "The Most Dangerous Man Alive" Ken Shamrock who has trained Vernon for his entire fighting career. In the challengers corner will be another world renowned Brazilian fighter, Francisco Bueno. The ever aggressive Shamrock team has no love for Brazilian fighters and will clearly look to demonstrate the superiority of their system over the popular Brazilian stylists. Look for Ken to be doing some talking here. Before embarking on his fighting career Marcos DaSilva was a fisherman from Fortalaza, Brazil. Besides winning the Brazilian title three times he is also the winner of the Rio Gavara JiuJitsu Champioship and was a silver medalist at the World JiuJitsu Championship. He loves to fight and jiujitsu has become his life. With this win over White he expects to establish himself on the world stage. San Diego's Vernon "Tiger" White is one of the true pioneers of Mixed Martial Arts. He began in the sport in 1993 when he survived a grueling try out to join Ken Shamrock's legendary Lion's Den fight team. White had his first MMA fight just three months later in Japan, and he has not stopped fighting since. White's career reached its pinnacle last October when he defeated Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko, to become the International Fighting Championship ("IFC") World Heavyweight Champion. That fight, which has become legendary for its intensity, was actually a rematch of an earlier fight between the two in 1997. In the first fight, Matyushenko won by a stunning guillotine choke. According to White, the difference in his performance in his second fights with Matyushenko can be chalked up to a change in his attitude. "I did not go into the second fight thinking I was going to walk through him like I did in the first fight," White said. "Vlady changed my whole outlook on fighting. I take every one of my opponents much more seriously now." White is now one of Ken Shamrock's instructors and is his protégé in the fighting arena. Ken Shamrock, dubbed "the most dangerous man alive" will be in White's corner come fight time. Losing just isn't an option. According to other members of the Shamrock team it's far better to stand and fight until the end than to face Ken after a loss. As the soft-spoken White puts it "I come to mix it up," says the White. "If you don't want to mix it up, get the hell out of the cage." This fight will be one of ten fights on the card that night including an enormous world super heavyweight battle. We'll find whether it's Shamrock or BJJ who is the victor on Saturday, September 30th at IFC BATTLEGROUND 2000 at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City. Tickets are on sale at all Ticketmaster locations or by calling 1-800-736-1420. It's the IFC, it's in Atlantic City and it's real! For further event information please see IFC-USA.com or contact: D. From Dan Severn: DAN SEVERN'S COMMENTS ON UFC 27 I have waited to make my statement in order to view the UFC tape and to hear John Perretti's comments he made about me first hand. His comments when being asked about me, "I don't think he has ever shown much." "He does not have a finishing hold in his entire body." "A terrific take down and a slapping kind of side control". These are not the kind of comments that should come from a UFC representative let alone a matchmaker. I would be ashamed of John Perretti if I owned the UFC and would send him packing his bags. I tried to reach Perretti today, but all I got was an answering machine. I left a message for him to get back to me, but I don't expect that to happen. I basically have one question for John Perretti, "What do you have against me?" The guy does not know me, so I don't know where or who he draws his opinion from. I have my speculations, but until confirmed I will keep them to myself which is something that John Perretti might want to make note of. To address John's comments on not showing much in the UFC. I would like to take the time to state some facts: 1. I am the only triple crown winner in UFC history. They (UFC) even said I am the most decorated athlete ever in the UFC. 2. I am the oldest Champion the UFC has ever had. 3. I have beat some of the top fighters in an 8 man tournament setting. Lets see, Dave Beneteau, Oleg Taktarov, Ken Shamrock, Tank to name a few. 4. I have won Championship belts from a number of other NHB companies: WEF, Super Brawl, IVC, Continental Free Fighting Alliance. I have worked as the main event for many companies enabling them to provide their ticket holders with a "name" as their main event. Extreme Challenge, IFC, USWF, Rings, Pride, Danger Zone, and others that I can' t even think of off the top of my head. If memory serves me correctly most of those matches ended in some type of submission. So where do you get your information from? As for your other crappy comment that I should not of been in this match (against Rizzo), all i can say is that "I stepped up to the plate and accepted the challenge against the young gun". I have never ducked anyone in the fight game, and never will. It would have been interesting to see what great fighter would have stepped up at a 2 week notice. SEG was in search of an opponent for Rizzo since Goodridge had to take time out due to a recent knockout. Becky Levi called SEG and we came to terms for the fight with Bob Meyrowitz. I knew going into this situation that Pedro would want to keep me on my feet. Our game plan was to clinch and take the fight to the ground. It is unfortunate of the outcome,(at least in my opinion) maybe not in John Perrettis opinion. The second kick that landed on my knee caused my knee to give out and stopped me from continuing the fight. I would have liked to have had the opportunity to of tested Pedro on the mat. But, it was not to be on this day. Congrats to Pedro, he is a great fighter and I hold nothing against him. I wish him the best in his future matches. As for my addressing my age and being to old for the sport. Sure I am and I agree totally with all comments on this subject. I was past my prime before I ever entered the UFC. I was at the peak of my game from 1984-86 in the sport of amateur wrestling. My first UFC was in 1994. So, I was already 10 years past my prime. Look for The Beast to continue to promote the sport positively and work for the many fight promotions throughout the world and the "smaller" companies to help them bring fans to their events and to give the fans the opportunity to see me in action in a live event. MMA DREAM TEAM In light of the 2000 Olympics, we got to thinking about what if Mixed Martial Arts was an Olympic sport. In this month's FCF Fan survey, we wanted to know who would you pick to be on the MMA "Dream Team"? Here's what we'd like you to do... Pick 2 fighters for each of 3 weight classes (lightweight, middleweight, & heavyweight), and give us your reasons for who you choose. The beauty of this Dream Team is the players don't have to be from any one country and fighters are not limited by contract to any one promotion. You show us yours and we'll show you ours (our MMA Dream Team picks that is). The results of the survey and some of the commentary we receive will appear in the October 2000 issue of FCF |
